FROM CHICAGO TO GREENCASTLE TO BOGOTÁ DePauw is a place where you can access a world of new opportunities. I put my passions for cross-cultural development and student advocacy into practice as a first-year resident assistant and international student ambassador. More recently, I was granted a U.S. Fulbright award and will soon teach English in Bogotá, Colombia. During the course of four years, DePauw has helped me discover more fully what I value and what is possible.” SA R A H SA L A Z A R Class of 2017, Fulbright Colombia, Chicago Posse Scholar, Residential Advisor, Crusader

SUCCESS THROUGH COLLABORATION At DePauw, faculty and staff members work with students and students work with the community to solve problems and build lifelong connections.

When action yields results Biology professor Pascal Lafontant and his students study heart regeneration using model species, such as the zebrafish. Undergraduate research students in his lab have earned national acclaim and published their work in peerreviewed scientific journals. Their visionary studies have won them a grant from the National Institute of Health to help solve key challenges in cardiovascular diseases.

UNCOMMON FACULTY Recognizing the extreme brevity of the 800 days the average undergraduate spends on a college campus, students will be expected to develop the strength, skills and freethinking necessary to envision solutions for today’s world. Our brilliant faculty make this transformation possible.

Undergraduate research at DePauw is truly where preparation meets opportunity. Students can take part in exciting, cutting-edge research with faculty members that leverages content from their coursework and innovative technologies in their discipline to solve real-world applied problems. Not only does this work give meaning to what is being covered in textbooks, but it also creates a unique learning experience that serves them very well in their future careers.

THE WORLD’S BRIGHTEST MINDS ARE ALL YOURS In my classroom, getting a good education is about working together to build bonds and become better thinkers. Students start their studies green but become more worldly and wise as they inquire freely, hear diverse perspectives and grow their vision. I, myself, am a DePauw alumnus and here I am, 20 years later, teaching in the same classroom where the light came on for me.” GREG SCHWIPPS Alumnus 2009, Professor of Creative Writing, Award-winning author of What This River Keeps, Thinker

IMMERSED IN CULTURE I chose to study abroad in Salvador, Brazil because it has the highest population of African descendants outside of Africa. When I began reaching out to people in the city, many who shared my Nigerian roots welcomed and celebrated me as as a long-lost sister and representative of their African homeland. At DePauw, we emphasize the importance of connecting with others. Spending time in Brazil iterated how beautiful and important those connections are. If I hadn’t allowed myself to get out of my comfort zone and travel to another country, I would have missed out on this important part of my heritage.

GLOBAL IMPACT Come to DePauw and join initiatives that create change on a global scale. In Sharon Crary’s lab, students are researching ways to stop replication of the Ebola virus. They study relevant techniques, learn to critique their own experiments – and develop new ones. My students will go on to make a difference in the world whether through research or graduate school, or by having better critical reasoning skills in any other field. DePauw’s liberal arts mission instillsmulti-dimensional skills for responding to global problems, which allows students to put their passions to good use.”

UNCOMMON LEADERS

For Andrew Gold, DePauw is one continuous opportunity to make a difference. When not serving the community through his fraternity and as a Resident Assistant in his dorm, he is driving home the win on the field as a leading player for DePauw’s soccer team. DePauw’s breadth of opportunities transformed my college experience. During my freshman year, a Winter Term course in South Africa exposed me to life after Mandela and real conversations about race. DePauw Dialogue and serving as a First-Year Mentor opened my eyes to issues around identity and inclusion. At DePauw, I’ve uncovered my passion for social justice. Today I know where I want to lead. DePauw provided the platform.” MO L LY M A D D E N Class of 2018, Philosophy and Environmental Biology Major, Greek life, Honor Societies, Environmental Fellow, First-Year Mentor, Cheerleading Captain, Volunteer, Transformative Leader

Forty percent, or nearly 11,000 alumni, are annually involved in the life of the University. Every year, DePauw alumni come together to welcome firstyear students, provide career counseling and host student interns at their places of work – even offering students their first jobs upon graduation.

UNCOMMON CONNECTION

The story of one DePauw alumnus’ courageous climb to create a better world.

When Bradley Clement graduated from DePauw, he had his eyes set on entering a traditional profession, but a summer spent in Alaska’s Denali National Park turned that plan on its head. The majestic mountain peaks and sweeping ravines awoke in him a desire to spend the rest of his life in the mountains. He built his career by leading expeditions to dangerous, snowcovered summits and documenting the journeys through film. Today he is a successful mountaineer, filmmaker and conservationist. Clement credits DePauw for his confidence to forge his own path. He is cheered on by a close alumni network of friends he met back during his student years in the dorms. These lasting connections and support give him the energy and motivation to pursue his goals – no matter how high.
