BE A TIGER By design, there are no two students who have the same experiences during their time at DePauw. That’s because being a Tiger means you can quite literally do whatever you want. DePauw students aren’t just smart, they’re involved, passionate and welcoming. They’re team captains, musicians and philanthropists, but most of all – they’re curious. With hundreds of clubs and organizations, there’s no excuse not to find your passion at DePauw. Since its founding in 1837, DePauw has created traditions that bring us together. In addition to having the oldest college newspaper in Indiana, The DePauw, one of the oldest Schools of Music in the nation and a national sorority (Kappa Alpha Theta) founded at DePauw, each year we look forward to these traditions:

»

EAST COLLEGE East College is one of the oldest buildings on campus. Located at the center of campus, it is a symbol to DePauw students of the University’s tradition of excellence and learning. The bell tower houses a clock, which was donated by citizens of Greencastle, and the East College bell, a gift from the Class of 1879 that originally cost $350. The bell was hand rung on all special college occasions and to celebrate athletic victories. The bell is now controlled electrically.

»

MONON BELL The Monon Bell football game is an annual rivalry between DePauw and Wabash where the teams compete for a 300-pound locomotive bell from the Monon Railroad. This game is one of the oldest rivalries in history, dating back to 1890 when the first game was played. For students and alumni, it’s more than just a game; it’s a tradition.

»

THE ARCH This ornamental gateway made of brick and iron, one of the most beautiful monuments of all at DePauw, is located on Locust Street at the western end of Anderson Street opening onto the lawn of East College. The arch was presented in 1910 as a gift from the Class of 1890 at its 20th reunion. This gateway has long served as a major entrance to the campus and familiar symbol of the University.

»

LITTLE 5 Held in late April every year, DePauw’s Little 5 bike race has been a campus tradition since the first race in 1956. Even if you’re not a fan of the race, Little 5 week offers something for you. The steering committee sponsors a variety of special events that include a blood drive, mud volleyball, a car stuff, tomato dodgeball, and the musical/ comedy review, Cyc-Sing.

“TO BE A TIGER IS TO BE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITIES DEPAUW PROVIDES, WHILE SHOWING A DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED. TO BE HARD WORKING, ENGAGED AND SUPPORTIVE OF THE DEPAUW FAMILY. AND TO BE DEDICATED TOWARD MAKING SURE EVERY DEPAUW STORY IS AS AMAZING AS YOUR OWN.” – KEVIN BUGIELSKI ’16

PROGRAMS THAT ENHANCE THE LIBERAL ARTS MAKE DEPAUW UNIQUE

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

HONOR SCHOLAR

THE HONOR SCHOLAR AND FELLOWS PROGRAMS In DePauw’s Honor Scholar and four Fellows programs, top-notch faculty and talented students work together to ask the questions that matter and address the challenges of a new generation.

ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWS

HONOR SCHOLARS intensify their liberal arts experience through interdisciplinary seminars and a required thesis. ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWS approach issues, such as climate change and biodiversity, through multiple disciplines. MANAGEMENT FELLOWS enhance their academic experience with a guest lecture series and paid internships at major corporations.

MANAGEMENT FELLOWS

MEDIA FELLOWS study journalism and communication mediums from TV, film and radio to print and the Internet. SCIENCE RESEARCH FELLOWS start solving scientific problems on day one, and they land research internships on campus and around the globe.

MEDIA FELLOWS

SCIENCE RESEARCH FELLOWS

These programs all offer students specific ways to augment their liberal arts education. The Honor Scholar Program offers students a capstone thesis project that represents the rare opportunity (and challenge) of engaging with a group of faculty on a topic of the student’s choosing. The Fellows programs offer semester-long internships or research experiences and frequent opportunities to engage with leading scholars and industry leaders on and off campus. All of these programs serve as an intellectual home for some of the nation’s brightest and most ambitious students.

EXPLORE THE WORLD Studying off-campus provides abundant educational and life-changing benefits that go far beyond your coursework. Off-campus programs provide the chance to enhance your academic experiences through engagement in independent study, service and personal development opportunities. You will learn more about cultures, language and common practices as you meet and interact with people in a new setting.

BUILD YOUR RÉSUMÉ The Hubbard Center for Student Engagement brings a fresh perspective to the undergraduate experience through an intense focus on outcomes and postgraduate plans. From securing internships, to planning study abroad trips, to career guidance and preparation, the Hubbard Center is our one-stop shop for personalizing a student’s four-year journey at DePauw. The Hubbard Center staff will guide you through your DePauw experience, matching classroom learning with Extended Studies opportunities. They’ll even help you craft your résumé and hone your elevator pitch through mock interviews.

CREATE A HOME AWAY FROM HOME Though we’d like to think that you’ll never want to leave the core of campus (and with so much going on, you actually might not), there are a few things that can make for some fun adventures when you do. And that’s where Greencastle, with its historic courthouse square, and the University’s 520acre nature park can come in handy. Grab a coffee at the Starbucks on the square. Go cycling on some of the best country roads in the state, perfect for your Little 5 training. Go for a hike or run around an old Indiana limestone quarry or along a streambed on miles of wooded trails. Enjoy events at Music on the Square, a community music space hosted by the DePauw School of Music. Visit Myers Market, a locally owned and student-favorite lunch spot. And, of course, there’s Dairy Castle, a small-town ice cream shop that is the perfect stop for a much-deserved ice cream binge after a long week in class. Wherever you go, there’s one thing that seems to follow you: the Midwest “nice.” There’s a reason that locals adopt students, indulging them in a homecooked meal every now and then. There’s a reason our community flocks to our School of Music to hear students and award-winning guest artists. And there’s a reason that the city’s strategic plan is, quite literally, about being a great college town.
