BIO & BEYOND E L EVE N
Science students at DePauw work alongside published faculty members on advanced projects, gaining hands-on experience with equipment that at a large university would be reserved only for graduate students and professors. For past projects, DePauw science majors have studied the immune function of lizards and reptiles, tracked how the human eye responds to visual art, and analyzed climate change in Putnam County by examining the region’s trees. These projects are student-driven, so when students get to graduate school or postgraduate careers, they are ready to jump into leadership roles.

POST-GR AD PREPARATI ON
Students considering postgraduate education should discuss opportunities with their major adviser and other professors in the field. Professors are the best sources of advice and letters of recommendation, but students can turn to the Hubbard Center for test taking and application resources as well as advice on how to incorporate their liberal arts education into professional fields.

Before first-year students set foot on campus for orientation, they are assigned to a First-Year Seminar (FYS) group. The seminar’s faculty instructor serves as students’ academic adviser during their first year and until they declare a major. The adviser guides students in choosing the classes and activities that will be the building blocks of their liberal arts experience. M A JO R A D V I S I N G
Students transition to a faculty adviser of their choice when they declare a major. Advisers may recommend offcampus study opportunities, Winter Term experiences, and extracurricular or cocurricular activities that augment students’ academic course of study. Students are expected to communicate their goals to their adviser and to inform the adviser of any changes in these goals. It is important that students meet with their advisers throughout the semester.
CA M P U S L I V ING DePauw is a fully residential liberal arts college, which means conversations spill over from the seminar table to the dining hall to the student lounge. HOUSING
DePauw guarantees housing through all four years of a student’s college experience. Living options include six first-year residence halls, dorms, duplexes, suites, apartments and houses for upperclass students. Students who participate in Greek life have the option of living in sorority and fraternity houses, which are located on or near campus and include a full meal plan. DINING
All students living in University housing participate in the Dining Plan – a spending allowance referred to as DPU Points and DPU Plus. DPU Points allow students to obtain food in the dining facilities, while DPU Plus is used for laundry facilities, on-campus convenience items and to purchase food at some local Greencastle restaurants. GR OUPS AN D CL UB S
DePauw encourages students to get involved on campus. There are more than 100 active student organizations to choose from. The Office of Campus Life provides support for all of DePauw’s student organizations and for all students interested in starting their own.
