Autumn Season
In the Spotlight Welcome to ‘In the Spotlight’. A brand new feature in our season brochure where you can learn more about who we are and what we do behind the scenes. In this first edition we welcome Mandy Precious, our Director of Engagement and Learning. What am I doing here? And by here, I don’t mean Plymouth – I mean working in this theatre. I was always going to be a police officer. I went for the police force test and failed so rather than work in Bird’s Eye packing peas I decided to stay at school. I had a crush on my English Teacher, Mr Matthews, and foolishly he let me do ‘A’ levels. He soon regretted this, I’m sure, given my unfortunate habit of following him around. But I did get to go on a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon and I did get to see an RSC Macbeth. It was apparently a terrible modern production BUT I loved it! For a kid who had only seen panto this was like entering a new world. And it just made sense. Because of my obsession with the hapless Mr Matthews I wanted to do well. So I went on to do a degree – the first person in my family to do so – in English. Then I became a teacher: until aged 27 when I retired gracefully. I was a bit too radical with my multiple earrings and flowery trousers. I went freelance as a community artist and one thing led to another and here I am as Director of Engagement and Learning. So what does that even mean? In Engagement and Learning we try to enable all kinds of people to get involved in theatre. There are 12 of us, plus practitioners, who work across the city and into Devon and Cornwall. Last year, we worked with 7,984 people: in youth and adult theatre workshops, in schools, at the university, in professionally produced shows, through work experience and with early career artists, and in our projects Funky Llama (work with adults with learning disabilities), Dare to Dazzle (work with children from refugee, asylum seeker and migrant backgrounds) and Our Space (work with adults with multiple and complex needs). I absolutely love the work I do because time and again people tell us that participating makes a difference to them: it builds confidence and skills, gives them a sense of well-being, leading to new opportunities including jobs and because it’s fun. But mostly I love my work because I am passionate about making sure that people – whoever they are and wherever they come from - have a chance to participate and see theatre and make theatre that represents them. Theatre Royal Plymouth is a special kind of place. It’s the opposite of ‘what you see is what you get.’ Behind the façade there’s so much going on and I feel very privileged to work here. And, of course, I get to see a lot of shows. This season, I’m looking forward to The Kneebone Cadillac in The Drum and Frantic Assembly’s The Unreturning. And, I wouldn’t miss the NT’s Macbeth for anything – it will take me back to that formative experience, that moment when the world started to make sense.

HHHHH ‘An Entertainment Phenomenon.’ Daily Telegraph
Following eight record-breaking years in London’s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over 7 million people, the National Theatre’s acclaimed play War Horse returns to Plymouth as part of its 10th Anniversary Tour. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage. War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical event which takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France.

A Frantic Assembly and Theatre Royal Plymouth production
Marking the eighth co-production between Frantic Assembly and Theatre Royal Plymouth in a partnership that has spanned sixteen years.
I want to return to my home. A British Northern coastal town. Three young men are coming home from war. Their stories, set at different times over the last 100 years, are beautifully interwoven in this compelling new play by Anna Jordan (Yen - Royal Court Theatre, Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2013). Directed by Neil Bettles (Associate Director of Frantic Assembly) and featuring Frantic’s celebrated physicality, The Unreturning explores the profound effect that war has on young lives, and asks - what does coming home really mean? What is home? And when experience has shattered you into a million pieces, will home help to put you together again, or treat you as an ugly truth it does not want to confront?

Forgotten By Daniel York Loh | Directed by Kim Pearce
‘ The foreign devils will be entranced by our performance and line our path back to Shandong with gold and cherry blossoms...’ 1917. Shandong Province, Northern China. Times are tough in Horse Shoe Village. Old Six and Second Moon struggle to earn enough to feed their young child. Big Dog struggles to overcome opium addiction and for Eunuch Lin, the fall of the Imperial Dynasty couldn’t have come at a worse time. Could a fierce war far away in Europe present an opportunity to put both themselves and their struggling nation on its feet? means ‘Forgotten’. ‘Left behind’. ‘Erased’. Forgotten is inspired by the little-known story of the 140,000-strong Chinese Labour Corps who left everything and travelled half way around the world to work for Britain and the Allies behind the front lines during World War One.

Robert Lepage is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest theatre makers. For over 20 years his creativity and innovation have stunned and captivated audiences with his witty, moving but always accessible storytelling. We urge you not to miss this very special event in our 2018 theatrical calendar. Through highly visual staging, which is as much magic as it is theatre, Robert Lepage revisits Needles and Opium, 20 years after its first production. With his trademark wit and style, Lepage interweaves the poignant and haunting stories of the French prince of poets Jean Cocteau, the acclaimed American Jazz musician Miles Davis along with one man’s broken heart. A new scenography, original images and an on stage acrobat complement the music of the famous jazzman and the beauty of Cocteau’s words. Inspired by these two great artists Lepage takes the audience on a journey of addictions in a production with mesmerising effects; a journey of the night that puts us under its spell and leads us into the light. Theatre Royal Plymouth is the only UK venue to stage Needles and Opium on its 2018 world tour, following a critically acclaimed visit to London’s Barbican Centre in 2016. This is a unique opportunity to see a theatrical masterpiece.

Financial Times
In a run-down rehearsal room, a director drifts off to sleep with images of the day’s rehearsals running through his mind. In his dreams the play is revisited, recast and replayed, and fantastic images of worlds far beyond his room appear. Life is a Dream is a spectacular new full-length dance show from the Olivier Award-winning choreographer Kim Brandstrup. Alongside dramatic, lyrical dancing from Rambert’s brilliant ensemble, imagery from legendary filmmakers the Quay Brothers creates a dream-like experience, and a live orchestra playing the rich music of Witold Lutosławski adds to the otherworldly atmosphere. They combine in a contemporary re-imagining of a classic play by Calderón - a study of desires as recognisable in today’s world as at any time in the past 400 years: the longing for authentic experience, and the need to dream.

Follow her on a heart-warming story of love and laughter to find out what that is. She will take you on a journey back to Dublin, back in time, to the week her father died. In her own words; “some of the most fun five days of her life”.

Kick the Dirt presents
in association with the Narwhal Ensemble
Rosie Abbot wants to ride bulls. The world doesn’t want her to. She’s gonna do it anyway. Bulls*** is an exploration of identity, gender, power, and the things we love to do. It’s about the roles we get given - and the ones we choose. Kick the Dirt are interested in making work which comes from the gut - live, physical, honest and political. Bulls*** is the company’s first show.
COW
by Jessica Barker-Wren
Set in rural Devon, Bethan has recently returned home and finds herself reaching out to a community that is being steadily dismantled. In a political climate where London and the regions seem worlds apart, Bethan is trying to straddle the gulf. Cow explores the transition to a particular stage of adulthood when parents are no longer around, encompassing themes of loss, community and the role of women in rural society. Both funny and heart-wrenching, featuring playful physicality and Bethan’s quirky and engaging storytelling manner, Cow takes us on a journey which fate and chance have their own way of steering.

Choreographer Mark Morris, hailed as the “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical” (New York Times) returns to Plymouth with Pepperland, a unique tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Kicking off Liverpool’s season-long festivities in 2017, Pepperland features an original score by Ethan Iverson, interspersing arrangements of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, With a Little Help From My Friends, A Day in the Life, When I’m Sixty-Four, Within You Without You and Penny Lane with six
Pepper-inspired original pieces intended to complement Mark Morris’ profound understanding of classical forms: Allegro, Scherzo, Adagio and the Blues. An unprecedented chamber music ensemble of voice, theremin, soprano sax, trombone, two keyboards and percussion teases out and elaborates on Sgt. Pepper’s non-rock and roll influences. This colorful new piece resounds with the ingenuity, musicality, wit and humanity for which the company is known.
