Blending 1927’s synthesis of handmade animation, claymation, live music and performance, Golem is a dystopian fable for the twenty first century. Grand Finale
Choreography and Music by Hofesh Shechter No stranger to Plymouth audiences, internationallyacclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter returns to Theatre Royal Plymouth this season with an explosive new creation.
“The mighty contemporary choreographer a combination of dance-maker and rock-star, but with film-director sensibilities.” The Times
In this new full-length evening, Shechter makes a return to live music, in a score which he composes for a group of spirited and eclectic instrumentalists who play on stage alongside his tribe of world class dancers. Shechter’s world explores the clash of juicy sentimentalism with the harshness and roughness of a life where the body is an agent of conflict. Intricate choreographic patterns and a rich musical score come together in a heady mix of power and emotion to tell a surreal, impossible tale about the human spirit. An exciting opportunity to see brand new work by Hofesh Shechter at one of just two previews ahead of the World Premiere in Paris.
Produced by Hofesh Shechter Company and commissioned by Georgia Rosengarten. Our Commissioning Venue Partners are Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Théâtre de la Ville-Paris / La Villette-Paris and Brighton Dome and Festival. Co-commissioned by Colours International Dance Festival Stuttgart, Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, Romaeuropa Festival, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Marche Teatro / Inteatro Festival together with Danse Danse Montréal, Hellerau-European Center for the Arts Dresden, Dansens Hus Oslo, Athens and Epidaurus Festival, HOME Manchester and Scène Nationale d’Albi. Someone’s got to speak for dead men, not pain and pity, but abhorrence, fundamental and unqualified, blood down the paintbrush, madness in the gums. Galactia, one of the most talented and renowned painters of her generation, is commissioned by the Venetian State to create a mural celebrating their naval victory over the Ottoman Empire. But, determined to present the brutality and suffering of conflict in her painting, she finds herself at direct odds with the wishes of the State. Resolute in her choice, she risks losing everything for the sake of artistic integrity. Scenes from an Execution is a darkly humorous and provocative play that asks fundamental questions about the role of an artist, the State and the obligation of both to reflect the truth. The Theatre Royal Plymouth’s People’s Company creates opportunities for anyone over the age of 18 to participate in theatre, including the chance to perform in The Drum.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier and Tony Award winning West End show is coming to Plymouth as part of its first ever UK tour! ‘The audience loves Beautiful’ (Daily Mail) and critics agree! Called ‘slick and beautifully played’ (The Times), the ‘amazing story of the songwriting talents of Carole King told through laughter and tears’ (BBC Radio 2), critics are celebrating this ‘tapestry of greatest hits’ (The Guardian). Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman, Take Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might As Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof and Locomotion.

Kopfkino present
Groomed Written/performed by Patrick Sandford Directed by Nancy Meckler (RSC, NT) Music by Simon Slater (RSC, NT)
Brighton Festival Fringe 2016 Winner of 3 Awards including Outstanding Theatre and Best of the Festival. How can a Truth be told? How can a Secret be spoken? A betrayed schoolboy, a Japanese soldier, and the inventor of the saxophone. Three gripping narratives show how a story can save your life. Bold, provocative, theatrical; not for a moment depressing. Audiences are spellbound.
THE BEARPIT The night is young. The world is ending. The relationship is exploding.
“With exemplary honesty Patrick Sandford sheds much needed light on some dark places.” Michael Billington, The Guardian HHHH
The Bearpit is about love, destruction and the insanity of attacking those around you. It explores our need for power and control in a world where it is easier to destroy the one you most love than be honest with them.
“One of the most moving pieces I have ever seen. I left the theatre educated and entertained, the rarest combination.” Sandi Toksvig
Weaving movement, original music and text into a two-person show, Kopfkino’s debut piece interrogates what we tell ourselves to be true versus the reality raging beneath the surface.

Presented by Theatre Royal Plymouth in association with Thelma Holt, Saitama Arts Foundation and HoriPro Inc Co-produced by The Japan Foundation
NINAGAWA Macbeth By William Shakespeare Translated by Yushi Odashima Directed by Yukio Ninagawa
NINAGAWA Macbeth was first seen in the UK at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1985 and subsequently as part of International 87 at the National Theatre in London. “In my whole theatregoing lifetime I have never seen a production as achingly beautiful as Yukio Ninagawa’s Macbeth” Michael Billington, The Guardian The production came to be recognised as an epoch-making piece and Ninagawa himself as a world-class director. It was revived, exactly as it had been originally staged, in Japan in 2015 and now returns to the UK for this brief visit. The celebrated leading actor Masachika Ichimura plays the title role and he is joined by Yuko Tanaka as Lady Macbeth. Ninagawa always relished bringing his work to Plymouth, and it is fitting that these final performances of this iconic production should be seen here. (Performed in Japanese with English surtitles) Theatre Royal Plymouth gratefully acknowledges the support of The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation
