Dear SG Community,
W
Alumni, Current Parents, Current Grandparents, Parents of Alumni, Grandparents of Alumni, Friends, Faculty, Staff, Foundations, Corporations and Organizations
community came together on St. George’s Day, our day of giving. In fact, the hashtag we used for that event in April, “#AreYouIn” seems appropriate in acknowledging and appreciating your support — for the answer became quite clear. We received more than 1,300 gifts on that day from all corners of our community. Indeed, you truly were “all in,” and for that we are most grateful. What was also truly powerful on the SG Day of Giving was walking down the Wind Tunnel to King Hall, seeing the wall lined with “appreciation cards” noting the gifts made in honor of someone who had contributed to making the donor’s St. George’s experience special. It was an incredible visual representation of the generosity, both of spirit and monetary, that defines our community. I can think of no better philanthropy. On behalf of all of us who live, learn, and work in this community, thank you.
e are proud to share with you the 2016-17 Annual Report, though that title doesn’t seem to do justice to what is contained within these pages. More than simply a collection of data, in our minds this report is a tribute to those people who enrich the lives of St. George’s students, faculty, and staff and who ensure the vibrancy of our campus through their tremendous generosity. That’s you — our alumni, parents, grandparents, and also our faculty, staff, students, and friends, who have come forward to support the mission of St. George’s and the vision that mission inspires. As you read through this report, I trust that you will get a good sense of the philanthropic diversity that defines our community. Whether it’s support for financial aid, faculty and staff salaries, new facilities, or general operating expenses, your generosity allows St. George’s to continue to enroll talented students from across the country and the globe and to engage them in programs that keep St. George’s at the leading edge of independent schools. The SG Fund has set records for giving in three of the last four years, and that’s because so many of our parents and alumni recognize the value of the programs we offer and the opportunities those programs provide. There are many highlights to share, though perhaps none is more poignant than the way our

OUR MISSION In 1896, the Rev. John Byron Diman, founder of St. George’s School, wrote in his “Purposes of the School” that: “the specific objectives of St. George’s are to give its students the opportunity of developing to the fullest extent possible the particular gifts that are theirs and to encourage in them the desire to do so. Their immediate job after leaving school is to handle successfully the demands of college; later it is hoped that their lives will be ones of constructive service to the world and to God.” Today we continue to teach students the value of learning and achievement, service to others and respect for the individual. We believe that these goals can best be accomplished by exposing students to a wide range of ideas and choices in the context of a rigorous curriculum and a supportive residential community. Therefore, we welcome students and teachers of various talents and backgrounds, and we encourage their dedication to a multiplicity of pursuits — intellectual, spiritual and physical — that will enable them to succeed in and contribute to a complex, changing world.
Sincerely,
ROBERT WESTON ASSOCIATE HEAD OF SCHOOL FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

TRIBUTE
The Dragon Squash
ENDOWMENT
“Doug Braff and I worked together to create a targeted endowed fund for the ongoing support of squash at SG,” said Bill. “It’s a great model … and provides a nice way for our families to support squash at SG into the future.” — B I L L H O L D I N G ‘ 8 2 , P ’ 1 7
T
he families of twins Andrew and William Braff and their 2017 classmate Chase Holding decided that their sons’ experiences on the squash courts and the fulfillment they gained as members of SG’s varsity boys’ squash team warranted some form of lasting tribute. So this year they created the Dragon Squash Endowment, “to support strategic investments in the squash program at St. George’s School and to enhance the growth and enjoyment of the sport for future generations of players on the Hilltop.” For the Braffs, Doug and Meg, and the Holdings, Bill and Pam, the Dragon Squash Endowment is a meaningful way to connect their sons to the school into the future. “My wife Pam and I liked the idea of targeting squash because it played such an important role in Chase’s life at SG,” said Bill Holding, an alumnus from the Class of 1982. “And we liked the idea of structuring the gift as an endowment so that it is lasting and not a one-shot deal.”
The 2014-2015 boys’ varsity squash team: Andrew Braff ’17, William Braff ’17, Chase Holding ’17, Mike Kelly ’15, Karim Abouhassan ’16 and Mahmoud “Moudy” Abdel-Maksoud ’15

Bill believes endowments are a great vehicle to facilitate targeted giving. “Families often will continue to contribute to funds such as this over time,” he said. “And we liked introducing the model to St. George’s to encourage others to do the same and support initiatives that are important to them.” The parents also put a great deal of thought into ensuring that the fund remains as useful and as versatile as possible. The income generated may be expended on capital items that typically fall outside the athletic department’s annual operating budget, such as elevated seating for better viewing, an electronic scoring system, and team room enhancements, or “to support financial aid to meet the demonstrated need of a student with a particular interest and talent in squash.” “Doug Braff and I worked together to create a targeted endowed fund for the ongoing support of squash at SG,” said Bill. “It’s a great model … and provides a nice way for our families to support squash at SG into the future.”

CONSECUTIVE GIVING ◆ ◆ ◆ We recognize alumni whose record of giving underlines their loyalty, dependability and philanthropic conviction. The school is eternally grateful for any and all giving, to be sure, but when a donor’s participation spans five or more years of uninterrupted support, the message is clear: St. George’s matters and it matters all the time. Recognition is based on gifts and pledge payments received for five consecutive fiscal years, July 1 through June 30; unpaid pledges are not counted. Recognition remains in place until a fiscal year passes in which the donor does not make a gift to St. George’s. These special alumni donors are recognized with a ◆ (5–9 years), ◆ (10–19 years), or ◆ (20+ years) after their name.

“I am thankful for my St. George’s education and believe that other young men and women can only benefit from such a rich and supportive environment.” — D O U G L A S A R N O L D ‘ 7 5
The Douglas Arnold ’75
OGDEN NASH BEQUEST
I
n 2002, Douglas Arnold ’75 joined the ranks of the Ogden Nash Society by adding a generous unrestricted cash bequest to his last will and testament. Doug, an alumnus who has given consecutively to SG’s annual fund for more than 30 years, said St. George’s is at the center of his charitable giving plan because of the school’s importance in his life. “The lifelong friendships that I developed with fellow alumni, faculty, and staff helped to mold my intellectual and personal character,” he said. “The support and guidance that faculty and staff gave me opened up so many opportunities in my life. My teachers and advisors at St. George’s challenged me to view the world as a place where humility, mercy, service, and justice are all ideas worthy of my time and effort.” Named after the esteemed poet who graduated from St. George’s in 1920, The Ogden Nash Society recognizes and honors alumni, parents, and friends of the school who have made provisions to support St. George’s in their estate plans. Members have pledged to support SG through a variety of planned-giving vehicles, ranging from simple bequests designating the school as beneficiary to more structured trust agreements. These alumni, parents, and friends hold in common a love for St. George’s and its traditions, and the desire to guarantee a measure of support on behalf of their estates. To date, the Society has 249 members.

Any provision made for a charitable organization in a donor’s estate plans is a planned gift. Bequests can be revocable or irrevocable. A charitable remainder trust allows the donor to receive income during his or her lifetime after which the balance of the fund is remitted to a nonprofit beneficiary such as St. George’s. A charitable lead trust allows the donor to prescribe a portion of investment return to a nonprofit for a specific period of time after which the fund reverts to the donor’s heirs. Other bequests include life insurance payouts and tangible property. Throughout the years since his graduation, Doug has remained a St. George’s volunteer who has donated time, energy, and enthusiasm to many school drives and constituent events, and who is also a loyal member of St. George’s Alumni Board of Visitors. Becoming a member of the Ogden Nash Society was a natural extension of his devotion to the school. “I am thankful for [my St. George’s education] and believe that other young men and women can only benefit from such a rich and supportive environment,” Doug said. “Through a planned gift to the school, it is my hope that the school’s legacy will continue for many future generations. I hope that others in the St. George’s community will consider making a bequest to the school to help support and maintain the school’s important mission.”

SCHOLARSHIP
“Andrew and I had been meeting up about once per month and we started discussing what would be the most meaningful way to honor his parents,” Alex said. “After a few weeks Andrew came up with this idea around helping those who have lost a parent.” — A L E X T U F F ‘ 9 3

lex Tuff ’93 will never forget his former English teacher, John Scott ’65, who passed away in 1994. The two developed a strong bond during their time together at St. George’s and following his graduation, Alex remained in touch with John’s son Andrew ’01. At one point Alex expressed to Andrew his interest in doing something to honor the memory of John and his wife and Andrew’s mom, Ramsay, who helped run St. George’s Summer Session and who died in 1998. Alex wanted to recognize the timeless impression that the Scotts had left on him, the school, and those who knew them. “Andrew and I had been meeting up about once per month and we started discussing what would be the most meaningful way to honor his parents,” Alex said. “After a few weeks Andrew came up with this idea around helping those who have lost a parent.” So went the inception of a fund to memorialize the Scotts and accomplish something positive and lasting in the process. The immediate objective was to reach $100,000 in order to name the fund, and in the fall of 2012 it became a reality — the Ramsay and John Scott ’65, P’01 Scholarship. The directive for the scholarship was simple and straightforward: “To be awarded to a day or boarding student who has lost one or both parents and who could not otherwise afford to attend St. George’s.” The architects and originators of the scholarship included Alex and Andrew along with Charles Barzun ’93, Geoffrey
Siebengartner ’93, Clay Rives ’93 and Briney (Dillon) Burley ’93, but the outpouring of support swelled exponentially within months of its announcement and so did the legion of contributors. “The aftermath has been multifold, including new donors, new donors who have become board members, new friendships and, most important, five individual beneficiaries of the Scott Scholarship so far,” Alex said. “There have been golf events, cocktail parties, marathons, phone drives, and conventional outreach to help drive money into the fund.” Right now the scholarship provides $8,000 per year to each recipient. Long-term it is hoped that the fund will top $1 million to maximize the benefit to its worthy recipients. “Our ultimate goal is to fund a full tuition — so we still have our work cut out,” Alex said. “Andrew and I recently met up in Newport and were reflecting on how incredibly good it feels to have launched an effort that has been so fun while giving back at the same time. At this point we just want the effort to continue for many years and decades to come.”
If you would like to contribute to the Scott Scholarship, please go to www.stgeorges.edu/gift. Andrew Scott ‘01 and Alex Tuff ‘93 turned a heartfelt tribute into an enduring scholarship.

lizabeth and Robert Mandor, whose son Nick graduated from St. George’s in 2014, recognize the value of maintaining a healthy, positive outlook on life when it comes to optimizing a faculty member’s professionalism in the workplace. So in 2012 they established the Elizabeth and Robert Mandor Educational Enrichment Fund to encourage and make possible extended faculty travel, extracurricular academic pursuits, and unique experiences designed to enrich personal and professional growth. “Bob and I have always felt it important to support our communities and our children’s schools,” said Elizabeth. Following Nick’s graduation, the Mandors wanted to donate “in some meaningful way,” she added. Making a donation that would benefit teachers rose to the top of their list. Mandor grants are specifically meant to provide teachers educational outreach beyond the classroom. Over the last five years, the fund has supported individual grants to 34 faculty members. “We have always felt that teachers are underpaid at the grade-school and high-school level. Especially so, when you consider the enormous impact that they have on a child’s

emotional, physical, and intellectual life,” Elizabeth said. “We also feel strongly that experiencing firsthand the ‘World Out There’ is a spectacular education in and of itself.” Director of Special Events Ann Weston and her husband, Associate Head of School for External Affairs Bob Weston, 28-year veterans of the Hilltop, used their Mandor grant to travel to Wyoming this past summer. “The Mandor grant gave our family the gift of spending time together in a beautiful part of the country that we had never experienced,” Ann said. “The week we spent in Wyoming’s Grand Tetons provided our family an amazing shared experience that brought us closer together, gave us perspective, and re-energized us. It was truly a once-in-alifetime opportunity.” Creating experiences for teachers that allow them to bring back to their students and colleagues the knowledge or insight they’ve acquired has been incredibly rewarding for the Mandors. “To us it was a win-win situation for student and teacher, both of whom reap the rewards either directly or indirectly,” Elizabeth said. “We have loved hearing about their projects and travels and experiences. It’s truly a wonderful way to give and we couldn’t be happier with the results!”
