Preface Character development requires a certain level of consciousness. The upper left hand corner of the cover of this book contains the African adinkra symbol matie masie, which means “knowledge and wisdom.” Parents and educators know that book knowledge and academic skills are not enough to help their children succeed. The ancient teachings tell us that knowledge is not enough. We must have wisdom and understanding. Matie masie conveys this insight. This is why Words of Power is critical to the development of our children. The ancient scribe Ptahhotep taught that, “…it is in the development of character that instruction succeeds.” He goes on to suggest, “strive for excellence in all you do so that no fault can be found in your character.” The simple wisdom shared in Words of Power will help our children cultivate their character. It helps them access their own moral compass as they navigate through the challenges of life. This book begins with three affirmations: The Student Creed, The Transformation Affirmation, and the Resurrection Affirmation. With these affirmations, we can clearly and consciously deconstruct negative values, and reconstruct the values we want our children to demonstrate. I have my students stand and recite the Student Creed at the beginning of every class. It is a call to order. It sets the tone not only for our class, but for life. We recite the Resurrection Affirmation at the end of every class so that the students are mindful of the charge to be agents of change and transformation in a world in need of healing. We usually learn the rhythmic Transformation Affirmation in the second semester. For example, when children repeatedly hear, “Discipline yourself and others won’t have to,” it is a constant reminder that they must take responsibility for their actions. WORDS OF POWER

When they hear the penetrating words of Jacob Carruthers who says, “Our stride is wide because we’re walking in the footsteps of giants,” it calls attention to the greatness of those who came before us and paved the way. These words bid us to go back and remember the African proverb that says, “If we stand tall, it is because we stand on the shoulders of our Ancestors.” Each of the proverbs and the quotes of this book are connected; these “words of power” help us and our children to weave a web that will allow us to catch success, much the same way a spider catches its prey for nourishment. But the utility of this book does not provide a quick fix. It is very much a process that takes no less than a school year. This new, revised second edition of Words of Power is separated into seven sections. The quotes and proverbs are not in a particular order. At the end of each section is a fill-in worksheet. I realize that these worksheets are only the first level of knowledge and that completing them does not indicate understanding. The teacher is the bridge between knowledge and understanding. The journey from knowledge to understanding can be facilitated in many ways. I have used many of these words of power as a “quote of the week” which can be found at the top of the board. Sometimes the journal topic of the day would be to explain what the quote of the week means and give an example in 5-7 well-developed sentences. I have posted many of these words of power around the room and then given my children the worksheet as a scavenger hunt. They must go around the room to find the words of power and fill in the blanks. When finished, we discuss the quotes and proverbs that they liked most and why. When I give my students an assignment, it is always timed to help them maximize their time. This is where the words of Jim Rohn are helpful. 5 ©2005 Chike Akua

I always say, “Make measurable progress in reasonable…” “Time!” the children respond. That means when I come around to check on you in 10 minutes, you should not still be on question #1. Sometimes, someone has not been on task. “I’m going to do it, Mr. Akua,” they say. I can always remind them of the Puerto Rican Proverb, “There is a great distance between ‘said’ and ‘done.’” These words in the form of quotes and proverbs, consistently used, admonish, instruct, and inspire simultaneously. There is an ancient African proverb which says, “A counselor who knows proverbs soon sets difficult matter aright.” Indeed, as parents and educators, we are all also counselors. Words of Power provides opportunities for critical thinking, as well. When Thoreau says, “Any man more right than his neighbor constitutes a majority of one,” it helps our children consider the courage needed to stand on what we know to be the truth. When St. Augustine says, “An unjust law is no law at all,” it helps us understand why Maulana Karenga echoes the ancient insight, “Someone must stand up, speak truth, and set the scales of justice in their proper place!” Many of the quotes and proverbs use simile, metaphor, and alliteration to bring about illumination. Everyone is concerned about the cultural and moral development of our children in the midst of technological advancement. Our children have been ever-exposed to harmful images and messages and under-exposed to the truth of who they are. There is an African proverb which says, “Bend the tree when it is young.” We are admonished to mold and shape our children while they are young before the foolish ways of the world set in. As we commence the process of molding our own character and shaping the WORDS OF POWER

character of our children, “let us not become weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap [a harvest].” Again, it is a process and a journey. The Chinese say, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. An African proverb says, “Little by little, strand by strand, the spider spins its web.” Hotep (Peace). The African Origins of Our Faith A Comparative Analysis and Introductory Dialogue

By Chike Akua

Sometimes people sit in church and wonder: •

Where did the writings of the Bible come from?

How did the sacred writings before the Bible inform and inspire biblical stories and Christian beliefs?

Were the ancient teachings of Jesus the Christ changed for the exploitation of the masses?

Is the term “Christ” a person’s name or title of distinction that one can attain?

In these challenging times, many people are flocking to churches and other places of worship seeking answers, while others are leaving because too

often

their

legitimate

questions

go

unanswered. For those seekers and disciples who are interested in digging deeper into the origins of the

Bible

and

theology

that

has

shaped

contemporary worship and practice, The African Origins of Our Faith provides a starting point for critical thought, analysis, and dialogue.
