Learning and Teaching Festival 2017 I am delighted to welcome you to the University’s Learning and Teaching Festival taking place between the 6th and 21st June 2017. The Festival will formally launch with the Learning and Teaching Conference, followed by a varied programme of events supporting different aspects of learning and teaching. Events are taking place at both Chichester and Bognor Regis campuses, and a number are being repeated at each site to help

Learning and Teaching UK Professional Standards Framework(UKPSF) Festival 2017 The UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) helps us focus our professional development in university learning and teaching. We use it to plan the University’s staff development programme so that our events encompass all of the areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values that form the Framework’s Dimensions of Practice. The Framework also describes key characteristics of those teaching and supporting learning. According to role and experience, university teachers and those supporting learning in many different ways can receive recognition as an Associate Fellow, Fellow, Senior Fellow or Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Your line manager or one of the Principal Lecturers Learning and Teaching can explore with you a possible route to receiving recognition, or check the Learning and Teaching page on Moodle and follow the link to ‘UK Professional Standards Framework’. Collaborative Partnerships in Event Management Education: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Event Management education requires a collaborative approach between HEIs, the industry and students. This paper assesses graduating students’ experiences with the BA (Hons) Event Management at a post 1992 university in the United Kingdom. The students design and deliver a major event on behalf of a ‘client’ as part of a collaborative partnership between the university and an external organisation from the events industry. The methodology was underpinned by an interpretivist philosophy with 3 graduating cohorts of 2012/13/14 and six (6) industry partners participating in the research. The findings highlighted issues related to several operational challenges that affected the student experience.The majority of students were satisfied with the overall degree outcomes however anxiety and fear about the assessment objectives and client idiosyncrasies and demands; and, the fact that event management is hard work was perceived negatively by some students and as flaws with the university and client organisations.The findings precipitated changes to how students are supported on live event projects and to how the collaborative relationships between clients and the university are framed. This sessions provides an opportunity for colleagues to share views on how best to approach the employability agenda.

The session will look at how to write clear learning outcomes and related assessment criteria. It will also offer ideas on wider approaches to learning, teaching and assessment, and opportunities presented by technology enhanced learning, and the supporting use of Moodle. As part of the session colleagues will have the opportunity to plan a new module or consider enhancements to an existing one.

Andy shares his recent experiences of Lego Serious Play, and offers some insights in to how it can be embedded in learning and teaching to enhance creativity and critical thinking. This session provides an opportunity to share ideas around a series of structured exercises which demonstrate the underpinning principles of using Lego and more importantly perhaps the role of play in Higher Education. The aim of this experiential session is to improve psychological wellbeing and emotional regulation by freely sharing our dreams in a group. The facilitator draws out the patterns of themes and this transforms thinking. This approach is used as a research tool, adopted to support research aimed at improving PSHE in the school curriculum. The research is underpinned by psychoanalytic methods pioneered by Gordon Lawrence.

The aim of this practical session is to use Bristol Online Surveys to create a basic online survey. The workshop will run through the basics of survey design in BOS including structure, question types and preparing a survey for distribution. Attention will also be given to anaylsis and exporting survey data into SPSS or Excel. Andy will discuss how BOS can be used for research but also as an internal tool for module evaluations. Therefore this workshop would be suitable for both academic and professional staff. By the end of the session, participants will be able to: •

The module is the key building block of a successful programme; but what does it take to write a great module that works both in the classroom and on the module descriptor? This session will look at the construction of a module through the lens of the theory of constructive alignment (John Biggs), allowing you to write learning outcomes based on that effectively align with assessment tasks and criteria. We will also examine the impact of the framework for higher education qualifications and the impact this has on the design of a module at different levels.

This course will explore various aspects of ethics in research, alongside a practical consideration of the University’s Research Ethics Policy and ethics review. We will look at case studies that draw out issues that often arise as part of academic and student research with the aim of increasing awareness of common ethical issues and increasing confidence in applying the Ethics Policy. By the end of the session, participants will have an: • Enhanced understanding of the University’s Research Ethics Policy and the process of ethical approval as well as the values and principles that underpin them • Awareness of how common ethical issues in academic and student research can be addressed • Increased confidence in applying the categorisation system defined in the Research Ethics Policy

The current generation of students seek a more entertaining and technologically based learning experience, demand involvement by co-creation of the curriculum and seek greater control over their own learning. This workshop explores how Lionel has used imagery and digital media in the classroom to develop blended learning opportunities and to explore the use of visual cues outside of the classroom as a way to enhance the student learning experience.

You will get a ‘taster’ of an interactive session he runs with final year undergraduates using chocolate to help engage students and enhance their creativity. Working with chocolate the interactive exercises helps explore aspects of business, market research, decision making and marketing & promotion, whilst makes use of on an intersessional tasks outside the classroom and followed up with a review and post session discussion.

Visuality and learning outside the classroom are great teaching strategies which enable students to acquire meaningful learning experiences as this type of experiential learning has the ability to bring alive concepts taught in the classroom. The student view is an important aspect of measuring the effectiveness of using visuality in teaching and the session will share their thoughts.

A exploration of the under-development of explicit and generic skills that may impede and impact upon the degree of success that some students achieve over their University of Chichester journey Are we working in partnership with our students to accept graduates that haven’t achieved to their full potential? Could we as professional service and academic colleagues work together in a more integrated way to create a culture that challenges students via a supported process to independence. This presentation will consider ideas on how we could better bridge the gap with ‘bridging loans’ by utilising a more assertive approach. Best practice from within our University as well as external providers will be referenced and a way forward offered via discussion of those present. We use a Forest School approach for undergraduate learning in environmental education, primary school science, childhood studies, tourism management, creative writing, and acting. Some modules take place wholly in the same small piece of woodland with students there every week. Over the time, students build up an increasingly personal relationship with this special place. The place – and our approach to teaching – gives students opportunities and permission to take risks in their learning. Flexibility in assessments encourages creativity and gives powerful evidence of the emotional attachment of the students to this ordinary yet extraordinary woodland. At the same time, teaching in our Forest School changes us as university teachers.
