PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Urban Sketchers, What an incredible time we had together in Amsterdam for the 10th Urban Sketchers Symposium! If you weren’t there in person, I hope you followed the fun on social media. We were honored to feature a look back at past Urban Sketchers Symposia via presentations from past hosts. More than one of the hosts called their experience hosting the Symposium “magical” what a lovely sentiment! One first-time attendee told me, “This is the most positive event I’ve ever been to.” If your chapter is interested in hosting a future Symposium or curious to learn more, Urban Sketchers is always
planning! Please check out the information available on our website or email symposium@ urbansketchers.org. Lastly, are you ready to start volunteering with Urban Sketchers? December 2019 marks the end of my term as president of the Urban Sketchers Executive Board. That means we’ll be looking for a new president to work with an amazing team of volunteers to help Urban Sketchers to show the world, one drawing at a time. Check out the posting on urbansketchers.org or email president@urbansketchers.org. Happy Sketching, Amber Sausen, USk President
MANAGING EDITOR’S MESSAGE Greetings, Sketchers! The 2019 Amsterdam Symposium has finally come and gone, and next April we meet again for the 11th USk Symposium in Hong Kong. In this issue, we meet the Amsterdam Correspondents, visit USk chapters in St. Petersburg, San Diego, Beijing, Vienna and Prague, hear Matt Brehm’s thoughts on the benefits of sketching with physical materials and catch up with USk YouTube manager, Lydia Velarde. Enjoy! Patricia Chow, Drawing Attention Managing Editor drawingattention@urbansketchers.org

THE USK SYMPOSIUM CORRESPONDENTS BY MEAGAN BURNS
The annual Urban Sketchers Symposium has been using graphic correspondents to report on symposiums since 2011, when the organization was much smaller and just getting on its feet. These days, the correspondent selection process has become highly competitive and rigorous, requiring much consideration and conversation. According to USk founder, Gabi Campanario, “the idea behind the Symposium sketch correspondents at the Symposium can inspire Correspondent program is to draw attention to sketching other organizations to recruit artists to document their as a storytelling and documentary art form. The first correspondent, João Pinheiro, from São Paulo, was selected for the Lisbon Symposium in 2011, and was chosen by his fellow blog correspondents. Here’s an excerpt from João’s application: “I am an obsessive portraiter of my city, São Paulo, Brazil. I’ve already drawn in every corner of it and I think my drawing style was born from there. Sometimes I see the world in all strokes and stains. Today, I feel the need to expand my topics, meet challenges, expand my horizons. The opportunity to be a correspondent at [the] Lisbon Symposium would be amazing in this direction and I believe that this enthusiasm for discovering a new look would be an interesting topic also for Internet users that will accompany my impressions of the symposium.” The selection process was similar in 2012, when Lapin was chosen to document the Santo Domingo Symposium. However, things changed in 2014, when the USk Editorial Team began to manage the selection process. By this time, urban sketchers from anywhere in the world could apply for the annual gig.

Tina Koyama was a USk Correspondent at the Manchester Symposium, and now she’s a member of the Editorial Board that helps select the correspondents. She says, “the call for symposium correspondents was put out to the Urban Sketchers community last autumn, and we received 31 applications from around the world. Our requirements were rigorous, and competition was stiff. The editorial team had lengthy discussions due to the high caliber of many applicants, making our job very difficult.” The Amsterdam Correspondents are: • Gwen Glotin (local correspondent in Amsterdam) 8 DRAWING ATTENTION
• Mark Anderson (Liberty, Missouri, USA) • Orling Dominguez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), replacing Mariia Ermilova of Tokyo who had to forfeit due to other commitments. If you’re interested in applying for a correspondent position next year, please be prepared to submit a detailed application, including several samples of your urban sketches with writing samples for each sketch. Your sketches should feature people engaged in activities, because that’s the main activity of every symposium. Be the storyteller and share with the audience what is happening in your sketches. It helps if you can demonstrate that you are already blogging for your local USk group or on your own, even if you are not writing in English. Congratulations to this year’s Symposium Correspondents, and thank you for your efforts!

than practicing professional skills,” Youkki points out, also saying that “I like that everyone is unique in their style using different materials.” The chapter counts 60 members, 25 of which are regular sketch meeting attendees.
Anastasia Mamoshina (aka Youkki) recalls taking a detour from art after shifting to a career in marketing. “My return to drawing five years ago was quite unexpected – I felt I needed to buy a notebook and start to make drawings of all I saw around. I discovered my new hobby was called ‘urban sketching.’ It was the beginning of my new life.” As a reminder to all sketchers out there, she points out that “I kept on practicing weekly on-location sketching.” Today, she leads workshops and sketch tours around Europe, and is admin of the USk StPete chapter. “The group was founded in 2015 and became an official USk chapter a year later,” Youkki recollects. It’s a very diverse and surprisingly young group, where most of the members have non-artistic occupations. “Although there are some artists, designers, architects and art teachers among us, most are economists, managers, scientists, tradespeople. Our story is more about entertainment
The intense activity that can be seen today in their Instagram account is the result of Youkki’s passion and dedication. “Our virtual embassy is our Instagram account. It’s our cozy little home. We started USk StPete 2.0 in December 2017, and thanks to it, the chapter got its second wind. Most of our sketchers run their art accounts with love, posting stylish photos of their sketching activities, which I repost with pleasure,” Youkki states, pointing out the power of running an engaging social media platform. Some of the members also travel a lot, and each of them strives to meet sketchers in other cities and countries, making each USk StPete member an ambassador and a hub of their charm and talent. “Word of mouth is the best strategy ever,” Youkki affirms, “and this is the most exciting thing about it. We are proud of being a part of a world organization, and show our beautiful city through our sketches.” “June in StPete is an amazing time of the year! The sun almost never sets, and one can easily sketch until midnight!” Youkki exclaims, mentioning the northern white nights. Dostoyevsky’s city was founded to become a new capital. “We call it an open-air museum.” When setting up a sketch meeting, the choice is easy: there AUGUST 2019 13

are bridges, embankments, lollipop colored roofs, palaces and loads of art nouveau architecture to choose from. When it’s cold in the winter, there are over 200 museums and galleries to attract the busy sketchers. Youkki sheds some light on big plans for the future, as the StPete Naval Museum – one of the largest and oldest museums in the city – requested them to put an exhibition together after the sketch meeting there last April. A large sketching event for Autumn 2019 is also in the making.

ot only are the views and city scenes in San Diego delightful, the robust Regional Chapter is a powerhouse of skilled artists who gather bi-monthly to create lovely interpretations of “America’s Finest City.” San Diego County is one of California’s largest counties, and the San Diego chapter has a member roster of about 550 Urban Sketchers, spread throughout the county. The group organizes two sketch outings per month, alternating locations between the North County and downtown San Diego to keep travel distances balanced for the group.

Lydia has incorporated a fun feature into their sketch outings: a video series called “Ask a Sketcher,” and has been posting to the Chapter’s YouTube channel for about a year. Each outing covers a different featured question, and within a few days of their sketch events, the video is posted on their social networks, answering questions such as why do you sketch?, what’s your most necessary sketch tool?, and how long have you been sketching?.

LYDIA VELARDE USK YOUTUBE MANAGER LEMON SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR
I
first heard about Urban Sketchers in 2007 when Gabi invited me to join the Flickr group. I was posting sketches on Flickr since 2005 and my blog since 2006. Facebook had just been expanded to the public and Instagram wasn’t online yet. There weren’t that many outlets for posting artwork. I was an active journaler for years and when I wanted to establish myself as an artist I started posting on social media. I have been YouTube manager for the Urban Sketchers YouTube Channel since 2016. The channel was established by former USk Communications Director, 28 DRAWING ATTENTION
Brenda Murray. I search out appropriate videos and request permission to share them on our YouTube channel. This year I am running a “call out” every month so that individual urban sketchers and USk chapters can contribute to our channel. The call out question of the month can be found in Drawing Attention every month. Our call out topic for August is “What is your favorite subject when Urban Sketching?” It’s easy to contribute to the channel. These can be videos taken with your phone! Just use MPEG4 or .mp4 file
Lydia Velarde
My favorite thing about Urban Sketchers is that we have a camaraderie with sketchers all over the world. We are friends even before we meet in person. Number 6 in our manifesto “We support each other and draw together” is also another favorite thing. I have met many people visiting San Diego from other parts of the U.S. and other countries who have come to sketch with us. We support each other! We welcome others into our chapter. Don’t be afraid to join an Urban Sketch Group in your community. I have met with a few chapters in other cities and have found them to be very friendly. There are so many different levels in the groups you don’t have to worry if you are just starting out or if you are a “pro”.
My main tip is to carry a sketchbook with you at all times. A pocket-sized book that can fit in your back pocket or purse will be a great way to get you started and to lose fear of sketching in public. I remember when I first sketched in restaurants I hid my book on my lap under the table so no one would see. Now I lay my sketchbook in front of me and I don’t notice if anyone is looking because I am so involved with my sketch. My most challenging aspect of urban sketching is carrying my large sketchbook around. My sketchbook is also a journal, so I like to keep my entries in chronological order. I have overcome this by carrying a small sketchbook and pen in my purse, so when I don’t AUGUST 2019 29

have my large book with me, I can just pull out my small book and make a quick sketch. When it is completed and I return home, I just glue it in my large sketchbook journal. I am currently featured in Art Journaling Magazine, Summer 2019 issue, which came out July 1st. The article focuses on Urban Sketching. I will also be organizing a 10x10 workshop series in our area and will be reaching out in August or September of this year for instructors willing to come to San Diego in 2020. LYDIA’S TIP: MY MAIN TIP IS TO CARRY A SKETCHBOOK WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. DIGITAL VS. ANALOG PART 2: ANALOG LAST MONTH WE ASKED ROB SKETCHERMAN TO TELL US WHY HE LOVES DIGITAL SKETCHING ON AN IPAD, KICKING OFF OUR SERIES ON THE PROS AND CONS OF SKETCHING DIGITALLY VS. USING PHYSICAL MATERIALS. THIS MONTH, MATT BREHM RESPONDS, DESCRIBING HIS PASSION FOR PHYSICAL TOOLS AND METHODS – PENCILS, PENS, BRUSHES AND WATERCOLOR. BY MARK LEIBOWITZ

n describing what they like about their chosen methods, both of these accomplished artists reveal a lot about what it means to be an artist in the 21st century, and what all Urban Sketchers have in common. ML: What’s your favorite thing about the way you work? MB: I love the fact that I can create an image, an impression of a place, from a simple piece of paper, a pencil, and perhaps a brush and a few pigments. To go from the blank page to an image that marks a very specific place and time in my life, that’s what I enjoy. The uniqueness of that particular piece of paper is something that really appeals to me as well. Of course, it can be scanned or photographed and then ‘replicated,’ but the physicality and uniqueness of that single sheet, in that particular book, is very special.
32 DRAWING ATTENTION
I love that I get one chance to make the image, especially if I happen to be using ink and/or watercolor. There’s no timidity in my process, no stepping backward (or using an undo button). This has led to a stronger sense of purpose in what I do – to go ever forward, and to accept what some might consider to be ‘mistakes’ as being integral to the sketch. There’s really no such thing as a mistake – unless it’s made to disappear (by erasing or undoing), thus robbing the artist of an opportunity to learn from it and grow in their abilities. I actually love that there’s a limit to what can be done on a single page with analog drawing. Often the greatest impediment to learning to draw well is the mistaken notion that more is always better – more lines, more leaves on the tree, more people populating the public space, etc. – and this means more time but rarely does it actually improve the sketch. I find that the fundamental

structure of the sketch is either there or not in the first 15 to 20 minutes, and then I need to be conscious of not going too far with shading or detail or whatever. Having infinite virtual layers and an undo button would have been a real problem as I was learning to draw – the limits of the page create a kind of discipline in my work that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I appreciate the responsiveness of the tools I use – the grade of softness in the graphite, the physical tooth or smoothness of the paper (and the way relative humidity can affect the paper’s responsiveness), the richness of pigments, the ability of a brush to hold and distribute water. In all the many times I’ve drawn on a tablet (going back to 2005 when I got my first tablet PC), it’s always been a mere approximation of the physical qualities of analog tools. I like that the energy is mine with analog tools – there’s never a worry about running out of battery power. I just need to remember to eat once in a while! I love the cost, or lack thereof – even the nicest pencil is 34 DRAWING ATTENTION

only a few bucks, a great sketchbook can be had (or made) for 20 bucks or so, a tube of paint is less than 10 dollars and it lasts me at least a couple years, and on and on. So I love that I can start with very inexpensive materials and create drawings that have immeasurable value to me. The way I see it, the more simple, affordable, and available the tools for drawing can be, the more likely kids around the world – no matter their economic means – will actually use them as
an aid to learning in any given situation… and at 8 cents per pencil versus $1259 for the latest iPad Pro, I’d rather be able to hand out 15,737 pencils than just one iPad. ML: Clearly there is a lot to be said on this topic. What you’ve read so far is just Matt and Rob’s first thoughts on the subject. They have more to say. But in the meantime, what are your thoughts on this subject? Send us your thoughts at drawingattention@urbansketchers.org!

n June 8, 2019, sketchers from the USk Beijing chapter visited the site of the Capital Iron and Steel Factory, the earliest steel plant in China, founded in 1919, which was located in the west of Beijing and used to be a great contributor to Beijing. However, due to environmental protection of Beijing, the Capital Iron and Steel Factory was relocated to other provinces in 2010, and the old site was divided into offices for the Beijing 2020 Winter Olympic Games, living area, and a Starbucks Coffee.

t the 2018 Symposium in Porto, Gerlinde Schweiger and I, from the USk Vienna, met Rajesh Dhawan from USk Prague. We spent a nice evening having dinner and drawing together with other sketchers from England, Switzerland and Portugal. We exchanged business cards to stay in touch, since Prague is only a short train ride from Vienna. I had never been to Prague before, so I thought it might be a good idea to visit the city and meet our fellow sketchers there. The response to that idea within our Viennese sketching group was huge, so I asked Rajesh and Jan Vitek to organize a sketching event for us at the end of May 2019.
AGUE
On Friday morning, ten sketchers from Vienna took the four-hour train to Prague. That evening, we met our Czech hosts for a welcome dinner at a nice Italian restaurant. We spent a lovely time together by the river getting to know each other, chatting about our sketching experiences and exchanging sketchbooks. On Saturday afternoon, Jan and Rajesh scheduled a five-hour-sketchwalk around the city center, starting at the Old Town Square to Charles Bridge and onto Lennon Wall and Kampa Island. Around 20 sketchers joined us for sketching of the beautiful city of Prague. It was amazing to see all the different drawings in the end!

Luckily we only said goodbye for a short amount of time, since three sketchers from Prague came to Vienna the following weekend. So this time we made plans for our guests to sketch in the city center of Vienna. Elizabeth Siegl-Kastner, a professional tour guide and Urban Sketcher, offered to do a historic tour around the city center with loads of interesting information about former life in Vienna. We stopped every now and then to capture the scenes on paper. Later on we found a nice place to have dinner together in the park of the old AKH hospital and continued with Drink & Draw.
