FAREWELL, SKETCHER

URBAN SKETCHERS LOST A GREAT FRIEND THIS YEAR WITH THE PASSING OF EDUARDO SALAVISA. BY MARK ALAN ANDERSON

SKETCH BY JAVIER DE BLAS

Eduardo was many things. The Lisbon-based artist and educator, blogger, workshopper, correspondent, and author of Diários de Viagem, was often referred to as a “drawer of the daily,” using a graphic diary to nurture and inspire students to draw. “I feel a close connection between travelling and drawing,” he once said, “a fact that has many advantages: I get lots of memories from my sketchbooks when I travel, and, the fact that I feel I am travelling whenever I draw, enables me to travel day after day, in my own town. And what I like about my hometown, Lisbon, is the unexpected meeting of the alley, the old square, and the 4 DRAWING ATTENTION

Tagus River, always peeking at every corner of the street.” Scrolling through Eduardo’s blog, it is immediately clear he made no attempt to draw with photographic precision. Rather, one is touched by a dynamic reality and a sense of place, an authenticity entirely devoid of pretense. His bold use of line fundamentally connected us with a moment in time, those sketches charmingly rendered in a fluid drawing style that was approachable and filled with charm. A native of Lisbon, Eduardo was a graduate of the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He was also one of the founders of Urban Sketchers, a

passion reflected in his “systematic recording of everyday life because of its playful and at the same time didactic character,” according to the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum, where an exhibition of the latest collection of works by the secondary school teacher and illustrator for the daily newspaper Público was on display through November 15, 2020. The exhibition, An armchair and 96 portraits, was a farewell to his friends, a collection focused on friends who visited him during his final days. “I suspect that a lot of people have come to hug me one last time,” he is quoted as saying. True to the Urban Sketchers creed, he asked his friends to sketch his funeral.

WELCOME, MOHAN! Urban Sketchers would like to welcome Mohan Banerji to the role of USk Sponsorship Director. He has been a Sponsorship Coordinator since January 2019. Mohan first came across urban sketching when he attended a London sketch meet at St. Pancras Station in 2016. It would be no exaggeration to say that he has been totally hooked since then (he is a co-founder of the USk Reading chapter). After years of travelling and working in corporate environments around the world, Mohan has settled in Finchampstead, Wokingham, UK. You can contact Mohan at sponsorship@urbansketchers.org.

Descubre el nuevo grupo USk Cuenca, Ecuador POR LUZ VEGA

D

2020 Gyeongju Urban Sketch Festa BY KEESUNG SONG

00 Urban Sketchers. That was the number of attendees at the 2019 Gyeongju Urban Sketch Festa last year. This year, the scale was doubled to prepare for an event with 400 people. Last year, Paul Wang was invited as an overseas instructor, but this year we planned to invite four instructors. However, Korea could not avoid the global pandemic. But two weeks before D-day, the Gyeongju city government, the sponsor of the event, dramatically approved the event on the condition that the quarantine regulations were absolutely followed. All of the events, which had been prepared for 400 people, were reduced to 90 participants, according to the government’s social distancing policy. Both the opening and closing ceremonies were canceled and the number of participants per workshop was reduced from 15 to 7, with no overseas invited artists. Everything was possible

because it was free to participate due to support from the city of Gyeongju. Gyeongju is a city with a thousand years of history. Bomun Tourist Complex is Korea’s first comprehensive tourism and recreation complex, and Bomun Lake was designated as one of UNESCO’s three major heritage sites in Asia in 1979. This event was held at Bomun Sang Ga, an old shopping street in Bomun Tourist Complex. This area is now private property, where a large shopping mall will be built. The Gyeongju team wanted to leave a picture of their memories. They said it was very hard to persuade the company to allow us to hold the event here. Through 13 workshops and an open sketch walk, we left our memories of the place as pictures. We made every effort to comply with the quarantine rules, and through the active participation of all sketchers in social DECEMBER 2020 13

distancing, we were able to finish the Festa without any incidents. Dong-sik Jung who planned and operated this event said, “This festival was a great opportunity to discover the precious value of our city through Urban Sketching, and to convey the value of the record through emotion.” The 2020 Gyeongju Urban Sketch Festa brought us great joy during the recent depressing and frustrating daily life. Next year, the situation will improve, so that more sketchers can enjoy it. Please safely endure this difficult time and hope to meet everyone again.

Welcome USk NEWPORT NEWS

F

ounded by Denise Mckenna, Daryl Russell and Mandy Lewis-Houston, Urban Sketchers Newport News is a new USk Regional Chapter on the East Coast of the United States. On January 20, 2018, Daryl hosted a meetup at Firehouse Coffee at Fort Monroe, hoping to meet likeminded artists who wanted to hang out and sketch together. One day, Mandy and Denise showed up, and they all felt they had found their tribe that day. During that first year, as the group got to know each other, they explored the idea of becoming an official Urban Sketchers Regional Chapter. They experimented with drawing at different locations and advertising on Facebook. To their delight, they discovered that many people wanted to get out to sketch and socialize with other artists. In their first incarnation, they were known as Urban Artist 757, a group

that still exists, and runs alongside the official USk Newport News chapter, and offers a place to share non-urban sketching art and news. The group first applied to become an official USk chapter in late 2018. At the time they were using the name The Hampton Roads Urban Sketchers, which did not meet official USk naming conventions. They then decided to use Newport News as their designated city name and after reaching out to the Fredericksburg, Virginia chapter for help with the application process, they were encouraged to try again. Mandy sent in their revised application in March 2020, and in June, the group was very excited to learn that they had become an official USk chapter. PHOEBUS BY STEPHANIE FALESKI

The pandemic has been difficult for USk Newport News. They have many older members and feel a responsibility to them. After trying Zoom, it quickly became apparent that it was not a good fit. However, they have managed to hold two official sketch walks. In April, with much caution and some uncertainty regarding safety, they were fortunate to partner with the Neighborhood Commissioner of Phoebus who worked with area residents and businesses to set up a meeting place and provide a map with points of interest. He even arranged for the group to use the garden of Sly Clyde Cider Works for a throwdown. The group felt safe and they were able to maintain social distancing. The event was so successful that they plan to do it again. USk Newport News has partnered with Hilton Art Walk, a very popular local art event, and workshops with the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center and opportunities for exhibitions are planned for the future. The group is excited about these partnerships and loves being part of something bigger. They use three platforms for communication: Meetup, Facebook, and an email list for their older members. Artwork by members on the email list is shared via their group photo during throwdowns. They have dabbled with Instagram, and will return to it in the new year when they find a bright young person to help run it.

USk ORILLIA BY MEG LESLIE AND MJ POLLAK

U

rban Sketchers Orillia was founded in December of 2018. Meg Leslie had been participating in the Urban Sketchers of Waterloo Region where she lived previously, and wanted to bring urban sketching home with her to Orillia, a small city in Ontario, Canada. Orillia’s artistic roots run deep, including being home to Canadian artists Elizabeth Wyn Wood and Franklin Carmichael.

Facebook page and Instagram account proved to be a wonderful outlet for our sketching proclivities. Members sketched around our homes and through our windows and doors, and posted our efforts online. We were also able to connect by Zoom with Urban Sketchers Toronto. We share our own sketches as well as sketches from international groups to our group page for inspiration.

Urban sketching was embraced whole-heartedly the first weekend that we launched Urban Sketchers Orillia on Facebook with over 80 people joining in! There was an enthusiastic turn-out for our first gathering, held at the Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH), where participants sketched artifacts on display as well as the beautiful historic building.

In the Spring of 2020, outside sketching proved to be the perfect opportunity to gather safely while maintaining physical distancing. A highlight during the summer was a visit to a local artist’s cottage, located on gorgeous Lake Simcoe….one participant paddled her kayak over, and two participants came from Toronto to join in. Another delightful event in the early fall was a group invitation to a local artist retreat called Rancho Relaxo, held on two expansive properties owned by a local patron of the arts, one location in beautiful Severn Township and one in incredible Georgian Bay. As we move back into cold weather, we have been posting sketch challenges for members. We also connect with other Ontario Urban Sketchers groups and participate in their challenges and events. We are currently planning day by day, as the second wave of COVID 19 leaves us on our toes.

Since our launch, gatherings have been planned six months in advance, and held on a monthly basis. We have had a wide variety of locations, such as the city library, a large food emporium, the local cat shelter, sketch by kayak, and many historically significant locations. We often joke about the title ‘urban sketchers’ when our locations are often quite ‘rural.’ On May 4, 2020, Urban Sketchers Orillia was approved as a recognized chapter by Urban Sketchers International. As a group, we were absolutely thrilled! When the pandemic restrictions began in March 2020, our group 24 DRAWING ATTENTION

Welcome USk PUEBLO, Colorado BY CATHY GUTTERMAN

U

rban Sketchers of Pueblo, Colorado is a new USk Regional Chapter founded by Sally Lincoln, Teresa Vito, and Joe Cawlfield. Teresa and Sally have been drawing together since the early 2000’s when Sally started a live model drawing group in Pueblo. Their life drawing group bit the dust around 2006 when Sally started traveling more and no one wanted to take over the leadership. Sally had been looking for a way to get something started again when she discovered Urban Sketchers in 2018. She knew instantly that a group in Pueblo would take off because there are many well-known local artists who exhibit all over Colorado and further afield. Membership has steadily increased from their earliest days, boosted by association with local organizations and businesses, as well as occasional local publicity. Sketching during the pandemic has been a significant challenge. Early on, USk Pueblo decided not to meet. They missed the social aspect of the community. Instead of meeting up, sketching together and sharing, they captured the view from a window, pets, plants and similar scenes. Not content with solitary sketching being the norm, meeting coordinator Teresa Vito used her ingenuity to find safe places for the group to sketch. For example, Teresa made arrangements with directors of local museums and tourist sites to open just for the Pueblo Urban Sketchers, allowing them to socially distance and enjoy having an entire venue to themselves. As a result of these arrangements, the group’s sketches have raised community awareness for the locales and the directors have been very pleased to be able to open, even if in a limited capacity.

DECEMBER 2020 27

One time, while everyone was sketching in a place called Neon Alley, the Colorado State Fair Fiesta Queen and her attendants came through and posed on location. Joe Cawlfield caught the queens with his camera and Teresa Vito captured the scene with her paintbrush. It’s a little more difficult now with the colder weather, but they have been doing car meetups. To remain creative, they have also used prompts like “Sketch where you do your artwork.”

28 DRAWING ATTENTION

As with many USk groups, USk Pueblo has been frustrated by the lack of a good unaffiliated platform for communicating with each other. Their default is Facebook, but a number of USk Pueblo members don’t have (or want) Facebook profiles, so they also use email. The administrators have read the USk threads on this subject with interest, but it is evident that this is a common and currently unresolved issue.

Old School Rules Still Rule in London BY JIM CHAPMAN DECEMBER 2020 31

Sketcher Spotlight

PHIL’S TIPS: FOR ASPIRING SKETCHERS AND ACCOMPLISHED STUDENTS ALIKE: DON’T WORRY ABOUT MAKING IT PERFECT. JUST TELL A STORY. AND DON’T MAKE YOUR SKETCHBOOKS SACROSANCT –– MISTAKES ARE PART OF THE PROCESS. DRAW DAILY TO GET INTO THE GROOVE OF DRAWING AS A LIFESTYLE. I’VE FILLED AT LEAST 38 BOOKS IN THE SEVEN YEARS SINCE I MOVED TO LONDON.

L

ondoner Phil Dean refers to himself as “old school” since he attended art school in the 1980s and launched his career in the pre-computer era. In his first job at a commercial art studio in Northern England, he was surrounded by gobs of rubber cement, T-squares and old school ‘old boys’ who prided themselves on their drawing abilities. “It was all about hands-on skills, they were real craftsmen,” Phil said. Phil, aka “Shoreditch Sketcher,” began drawing outdoors during his art school years after growing weary of drawing endless models. He asked the instructor if they might draw something else. So he and other art students eagerly went outside to sketch buildings, at the airport, and at the local police station, even drawing police motorcycles.“I’ve never looked back after that,” he said.

32 DRAWING ATTENTION

Phil ran across Urban Sketchers about 5 years ago, while looking for inspiration on Instagram. A lot of USk work resonated. “I thought: this is amazing,” he said. “It was exciting to see this was a thing.” He dove into USk and recently taught a class at the USk Switzerland Symposium. “Sketchers were drawing at breakfast, lunch, dinner, over drinks, everywhere!” he said. “It’s an incredible culture; I was blown away. It has a real community feeling to it.” Phil loves the simplicity of sketching on location with traditional materials, making magic so simply, with a pen, some colors and paper. “We get to be analog in a digital world,” he said.

Phil Dean

Phil sketches with an Edding 55 fine line pen, then follows with watercolors on a Moleskine pad. He envisions the whole double-page pad as a single canvas. He is currently working to create his own line of sketchbooks. Clearly, Phil is a busy guy. But don’t expect to see him slacking off. Because back in the 1980s, he received some ‘high caliber’ advice. One day, a drawing instructor stepped into class dressed in black, gangster style, complete with a ‘tommy’ gun. He wanted to emphasis to the class to be bold and fearless when drawing.

CONNECT WITH PHIL

“Be bold, or else!” was the lesson. That was almost forty years ago, but evidently the lesson stuck. He hasn’t stopped drawing since.“Probably couldn’t do that sort of stuff nowadays, but it still makes me laugh,” Phil said.
