PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Urban Sketchers, I had the pleasure of telling my Urban Sketching story to a group of university architecture students this past week— introducing them to the fun, community, and education of Urban Sketchers. I hope I showed the students that sketching lives beyond the four walls of the classroom. Preparing for the talk was a great opportunity to reflect on why I sketch, how I sketch, and how my sketching has changed over the years. Why do I sketch? Sketching is a physical act that embeds memories on the page and in my body in a way that photography never can. I can remember every sketch I’ve done; flipping through a sketchbook, even one from years ago, releases a flood of memories about the experience of recording that image on the page.

How I sketch has been deeply impacted by the workshops I’ve taken with Urban Sketchers instructors. These workshops introduced me to new tools and media, and helped me improve my drawing techniques. The confidence that comes from learning cannot be overstated. The primary change in how I sketch, thanks to Urban Sketchers, is an expansion of the subjects of my sketches, letting me see and capture more of the world around me. I recommend that you take a look through some of your own sketchbooks. Congratulate yourself on how much you’ve grown and developed as a sketcher. And introducing sketching to someone in your life. Happy Sketching, Amber Sausen, USk President

Letter to the Editor

LETTER TO THE EDITOR The November 2019 issue of The Artist’s Magazine includes my feature story, “Urban Sketching and PleinAir Painting: Descendants of the Renaissance.” In the story I trace the roots of these popular genres back to The Renaissance. Though separated by 150 years, it’s easy to make the connection that both the “plein-aire painting” and “urban sketching” movements were launched by artists who broke from the traditional art of their age to pursue more personal outlets of expression. What’s not as easy to see, however, is how far this inherent, artistic drive for individualism reaches back into history’s past. During the Renaissance (1435-1550 CE) little was written about artists who abandoned established art practices to draw “on location” or paint directly from nature...though numerous examples of such works do exist. There have always been artists who look beyond what is “contemporary” in their society. Making these connections in terms of ways of thinking, as opposed to styles or 4 DRAWING ATTENTION

techniques, most certainly what we presently refer to as “urban sketching” and “plein-aire painting” had their psychic beginnings during the Renaissance…they simply didn’t have names for that type of art back then. John Roman

USK CAMP UA 2019

TEXT BY JARO JAKOVLEV PHOTOS BY PAVLO DOROGOY AND EKATERINA DROZD

The first Ukrainian Urban Sketchers Camp took place in the industrial space of the Mechanica art-plant on the 19th of September with a global gathering of sketchers from eight Ukrainian cities: Kharkiv, Kyiv, Odessa, Dnipro, Vinnytsya, Rivne, Zaporizhya, and Uzhorod. We met our partners with their booths full of craft books, water brushes, liners and other creative stuff. Our main partner Rosa worked with sketchers for the first time. We provided promo packs from our main sponsors of 8 DRAWING ATTENTION

graphic materials and merch. Mårio Linhares gave an open lecture about travel blogging diaries. Two groups of participants visited two important plants: the turbine plant and the generator plant, where they met the industrial mightiness of Industrial Kharkiv. The evening drink and draw took place during a theater performance by Paradefest. The second day included a Kharkiv airport visit – to the old and modern terminals. Then we drew with

guest tutors in four workshops inside and outside our second location Kharkiv School of Architecture. This first private institute in the country provides architectural education for young Ukrainian specialists under leading Ukraininan and foreign teachers (from Europe, UK, USA). Tutors from Odessa, Kharkiv and Dnipro gave good up-to-date knowledge of using graphic materials from their own experience. Fresh lunches from our friends were also awaiting hungry participants and tutors. Big evening draw parties took place in cafes nearby till midnight. The third day opened with new perspectives to draw in the city. We walked through the 2nd Kharkiv Art Biennale locations, mixing contemporary Ukrainian art with Venice Biennale scale and variety. After this art diving, we continued with Mário Linhares’ funny and interesting workshop, learned to use smart phones for sketching during Jaro’s demo, discussed how to implement ideas with sketching in other forms of contemporary art, led by two wellknown world artists – Roman Minin and Daria Koltsova, who showed

their installations and performances made on urban and industrial canvas. The camp ended with a silent auction and jazzy mood party with tasty treats for every frozen and tired sketcher, who was also given a special certificate of participation in the First Urban Sketchers Camp UA 2019. USK MONTRÉAL EXHIBITION

TEXT BY NATHALIE ZINGER PHOTOS BY ROBERT POIRIER

Fifty urban sketchers presented some 200 sketches – including 25 sketchbooks at le Pavillon de l’Entrepôt (2901, boul. Saint-Joseph, Montréal). The opening was a great success – over 100 people showed up. The show is on till November 10. Since the initial launch of Urban Sketchers Montréal in 2012, thanks to the leadership of Shari Blaukopf and Marc Holmes, the USk community has thrived. During the last year and a half, the monthly USk meetings were organized to discover the Lachine Canal, its five locks, and surrounding neighborhoods. Initially built in 1825, the canal is to this day a formidable historical marker of the urban and industrial landscape of Montreal. 10 DRAWING ATTENTION

USK SWITZERLAND SYMPOSIUM BY ANDRÉ SANDMANN, USK SWITZERLAND About 60 urban sketchers from all over Switzerland, and even some from abroad, met in Zuoz in the Swiss Alps for the first USk Switzerland Symposium, which took place in the beautiful scenery of Engadin Valley (near St. Moritz) on September 20 and 21. We were lucky as we had perfect weather conditions and enjoyed sketching the typical houses in the village of Zuoz and the alpine environment together. We invited Rolf Schröter (Berlin/ USk Germany) and Vincent Desplanche (Toulouse/USk France) to join our local workshop team, and therefore

the meeting also had an international touch to a certain extent, which the participants appreciated. We were happy as our local partner and host – the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz – generously offered us its rooms for workshops, having dinner together and even for overnight stays. USK VALENCIA & USK MAESTRAT ORGANIZE FIRST USK MEDITERRANEAN MEETING BY ELOI PONS MARZAL The 1st USk meeting of the Mediterranean, organized between Usk Valencia and Usk Maestrat took place on the 28th of September. This summer we made plans to start an ambitious project between USk Valencia and USk Maestrat: “1a Trobada USk del Mediterani” (1st USk Meeting of the Mediterranean), and we got to work quickly to organise everything in a short period of time. Our goal was to bring together Urban Sketchers groups around the Mediterranean, from North to South and from East to West, to share for one whole day what unites us, and at the same time, makes us unique; and to encourage relationships, knowledge, different perspectives and ways of drawing. Summing up, to discover our sea and its cities, one drawing at a time. The USk Valencia and USk Maestrat chapters took the first step with this first gathering, which we hope will become annual, itinerant and increasingly significant in the future. The project was started with great enthusiasm,

16 DRAWING ATTENTION

despite being very ambitious. We also believed that it would be interesting for diversity, plurality and curiously for the similarity of the Mediterranean cultures. We met in Peñíscola, a beautiful town on the east coast of Spain. This coastal town has a great monumental and historical heritage and a stunning geographical location in the Maestrat region. We invited all the urban sketchers from the Mediterranean (and beyond) to come to this first meeting. It was a fantastic experience to be able to bring together 200 urban sketchers for one day from all over Spain (Elx, València, Castelló, Maestrat, Terres de l’Ebre, Reus, Tarragona, Lleida, Badalona, Sabadell, Terrassa, Barcelona, Girona, Zaragoza, Madrid, Seville and Cáceres). It was a day in which we drew a lot, of course, but we also learned tips and tricks, we discovered new materials, we met other urban sketchers, we got to know Peñíscola and its castle better, gifts were raffled, we ate together and had a lot of fun!

USk Valencia & USk Maestrat

We would especially like to thank all the sponsors, institutions and media. We would also like to thank the three star artists who gave the demonstrations (Hugo Costa, Jose Galarzo and Diego Monllau). A big thanks to the volunteers, the USk groups and all the urban sketchers who came very motivated and enthusiastic. Without you all, this 1st Trobada USk del Mediterrani would not have been so successful. ANGEL GERMAN SIMARRO

MEET THE USK BOARD: TREASURER GAIL WONG BY MEAGAN BURNS

In our continuing series on getting to know the USk Executive Board Members and the roles they fulfill, we turn to Seattle Urban Sketcher, architect, architectural illustrator, educator and volunteer USk Treasurer, Gail Wong. Gail has been treasurer since 2018, taking over the position from Joel Winstead, and is no newcomer to supporting the organization. Prior to this current role, Gail was an Education Committee member, a Workshop Coordinator, admin of her local Seattle Regional Chapter, and has also been sketching since her childhood days while growing up in California’s Bay Area. “My goal as Treasurer is fiscal responsibility, building up revenue to maintain a sustainable operating budget to support our current programmatic efforts and future projects, as well as continuing to participate in our growing global sketching community.” 20 DRAWING ATTENTION

The treasurer’s role is to oversee the fiscal health of the organization and head up the finance team, who does the specific day-to-day tasks required to run the organization. A budget is set at the start of each year, which incorporates the previous year’s income and expenses, and budget forecasts made by the treasurer for the upcoming year. Gail works with USk directors and committees to discover what is being planned in the coming year, and records forecasted expenses and income. When budgets are set, Gail works with the USk President to create a draft budget, which is then presented to the Executive Board to review and approve. The treasurer also manages the financial flow of the organization, authorizing payments to vendors, venues and reimbursements to instructors, as well as operating costs incurred during the year. Urban Sketchers has a

Gail Wong

bookkeeper that treasurer works closely with, to assure the proper forms and reports required for tax purposes are in order, and filed accordingly with the CPA. And, of course, there’s the Annual Symposium; all teams work throughout the year to support the Symposium, but there are many other growing programs that are supported as well. “Since Urban Sketchers has seen tremendous growth over the past few years, there’s much more to do than in the early years. We now have a total of five volunteers working on the finance team to help spread out the necessary tasks, and I connect with these volunteers to be sure we are on top of everything.”

The Urban Sketchers organization is supported by so many hard working volunteers, as it takes a village to support the global community of urban sketching workshops, educational programs, symposiums, and dayto-day operating functions. To learn how you can get involved and volunteer in a capacity that works for your schedule, please check out the volunteer page on the USk website. A big thank you to all our volunteers worldwide!

Community Workshop Grant Program

LISTENING THROUGH A SKETCHBOOK MIKE DAIKUBARA TEACHES ARTISTS WITH DISABILITIES THROUGH THE COMMUNITY WORKSHOP GRANT PROGRAM BY MARK ALAN ANDERSON

We all listen in different ways. In traditional education, the “right” way to learn is often depicted as students sitting quietly in their chair to demonstrate they are paying attention. But as Urban Sketcher Mike Daikubara came to understand, perhaps there are some who show their willingness to learn about art differently. I first learned about Mike while researching our new Community Workshop Grant Program. Emerging from an anonymous donation at the USk Symposium in Chicago, the Community Workshop Grant Program is a matching fund campaign with the goal of introducing urban sketching to people who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to experience it. As USk Vice-President Richard Alomar told me, “the idea was to really bring together all the good things about USk [and] an instructor and a chapter administrator would get together with an organization that has nothing to do with sketching and provide a free Urban Sketchers workshop.” The global Urban Sketchers organization 24 DRAWING ATTENTION

reviewed the grant applications, eventually settling upon three for 2019, five more in 2020, and a proposed five to eight additional workshops in 2021. The workshop idea resonated with Mike, who had recently relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina (USA), and he reached out to the local administrator, Jenny Sperry. Jenny is a counselor who works with people with special needs, and she knew right away the direction they should consider. As Mike put it, “out of all the possibilities we talked about, Jenny had a strong desire to partner with people with special needs, and I also agreed that would be an amazing opportunity. Along the way...we met up with Cheri and Toby from Haerfest Coffee who not only made great coffee, but were also partnering with artists from an organization called UMAR to create artwork for their sensory coffee packaging labels. This is what finally led us to meet up with Ed, Lauren and Isis from

UMAR to work with artists with IDD (Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities) for our very first community workshop.” All students need structure to succeed; structure is especially important for students with special needs. Fortunately, Mike’s workshop approach is broken down into “bite-sized chunks,” and as he asked students to experiment, the reward was palpable: smiles and hugs and yes, even autographs! Some students communicated through smiles, while others used signs. “The communication of art just gets through to people,” Mike says. “You never know with sketchers, just because they don’t have eye contact doesn’t mean they’re not listening. They’re often listening through their sketchbook.” The Community Workshop Grant Program promotes USk to people who’ve not been exposed to urban sketching. Two other programs are planned worldwide for 2019: Marion Rivolier will be working children in underserved communities, and L.K. Bing will be bringing urban sketching to developmentally challenged children in Bali.

STEPHANIE BOWER’S TIP #101: ENJOY THE JOURNEY BY JANE WINGFIELD

Seattle urban sketcher, Stephanie Bower’s newest contribution to the Urban Sketching Handbook Series: 101 Sketching Tips: Tricks, Techniques, and Handy Hacks for Sketching on the Go comes out November 5th and it’s already had so many presales the editors are working on translations! The handbook, the sixth in the series, shows the work of 47 artists from around the globe, many of whom have not been featured in any of the other handbooks. It covers basic drawing techniques with insightful tips that help demystify some of the challenges we face while sketching.

learns so much from the questions they ask and she knows without their input she would not have learned so much about the art of teaching sketching. She is passionate about the process. “The real reason I write these books is because I want other people to learn about what they see by drawing.”

“I’ve learned over the years how to break down sketching processes into small bites. And I like to use imagery in my teaching. For example, when sketching a tower, think of it as a wedding cake,” Stephanie explains. “The book really brings together all my worlds in one place – architecture, architectural illustration, teaching, travel sketching, urban sketching.” There’s advice, drawing tips, new ways of looking at things. “I have a mission to keep people hand-drawing. For me it’s a tool for seeing better.”

Stephanie’s favorite tip is #101: Enjoy the Journey. “It’s remarkable how powerful sketching can be... What we sketch becomes part of our DNA and is forever a part of us... So whether you draw or paint, work at home or on the road, the final tip of this book is to enjoy your amazing sketching journey. It will change how you experience the world in so many ways...The more you sketch the more rewarding it becomes, especially if you share the experience with others. It’s not about the destination; it really is about how you get there. See your world better, one sketch at a time.”

The book started with a series of instructional posts on her blog. The first few ideas came to her, then more and more until she was waking up at night adding to the list. When she hit 150, she thought, “I think I may have a book here.” She contacted the Handbooks editor, who quickly confirmed the idea. Stephanie acknowledges the many students who have taught her over the years. She
