Urban Sketchers 2022 Annual Report
MISSION To raise the artistic, storytelling and educational value of on-location drawing, promoting its practice and connecting people around the world who draw on location where they live and travel.
MANIFESTO We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel. Our drawings are a record of time and place. We are truthful to the scenes we witness. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles. We support each other and draw together. We share our drawings online. We show the world, one drawing at a time.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
H
ello Urban Sketchers. 2022 was an exciting year for the Urban Sketchers organization with many new projects and a fresh focus. We started the year with the launch of our fabulous new website featuring translated content and easier navigation. The Executive Board also welcomed five new members to their roles.
2022 was the inaugural year of the new Regional Event Grants program, which is set up to equip and assist USk Chapters across the world to create and host larger, more accessible, sustainable USk events that can take place globally in addition to the annual USk Symposium. In September, the USk Executive Board met in Guadalajara Mexico, It was the first time in three years the board met in person for the annual strategic planning meeting and community based events program, which were graciously hosted by Urban Sketchers Guadalajara. You can read more about the work during our Strategic Planning meetings and our priorities in the December issue of Drawing Attention. As restrictions started to loosen in many parts of the world, we also began to see our Chapters getting back out there and gathering again in person. We saw many Chapters celebrating their ten-year anniversary and our family of Chapters grew by 28 in 18 countries making us 377 Chapters worldwide.

GUADALAJARA PLANNING SESSION
Last but certainly not least, after a three-year hiatus we announced that the location of our 11th International Urban Sketchers Symposium would be in New Zealand in April 2023. We were so excited to finally be able share the location that had been decided all the way back in 2019. Originally planned for 2021, we could not be more happy to have the opportunity to gather together in April of 2023 in Auckland and bring another Symposium to life. All of the programs and events that happened in 2022 could not have been done without the support of our community and the selfless work of our amazing volunteer committee members. Thank you for everything you do for USk, together we continue to grow, learn and share. I could not be more proud to call myself an Urban Sketcher! Happy Sketching, Genine

2022 ANNUAL REPORT 11
2022 EDUCATION & EVENTS 2022 in USk Education was a year of transitioning from the pandemic mode of remote learning to resuming in-person gatherings and educational activities. It was a year of intense planning and preparation on several fronts simultaneously. The Education Committee has been busy putting together symposium programming, publishing Reportage Grant projects, assisting with the educational offerings for the five regional events, selecting the symposium correspondents, and planning the Instructor retreat that will take place in Auckland, New Zealand in April. 12 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
USK REPORTAGE GRANTS Visual storytelling lies at the heart of the urban sketching movement. Urban Sketchers’ Reportage Grant program highlights stories from around the world that tell a story by capturing an event and showing context, characters, and setting. They highlight an aspect of local culture, a moment in time, an industry or trade, and societal change in drawings and writing. The program is designed to highlight the best examples of drawing reportage in our community and inspire a new generation of artist reporters. Sketchers of all abilities and styles are encouraged to apply. You can submit a proposal as an individual sketcher or form a creative collaboration with someone else or engage your whole chapter in this project. ABOVE: USk TORONTO & FRANCE / SPAIN SKETCH EVENT

USk WORKSHOPS In 2022 Urban Sketchers workshops took place in Europe and the US. In close collaboration with the Sponsorship Committee, USk also held its first summer workshops in partnership with MISA (Madeline Island School of the Arts) in August of 2022. USk Education sent three experienced instructors to the event, and the overall response of the participants has been overwhelmingly positive. “Meeting people from different places in the world. Learning so much from the amazing instructors; their energy was great.” PHOTOS: MARU GODAS

USk WORKSHOPS STRATEGY The Education Committee is exploring new ways to revitalize the Workshop program including:
• Approaching individual instructors directly if we feel
they can deliver classes and workshops that also share our vision and values • Offering an online training seminar for potential instructors • Harnessing the inspirational power of the Symposium to raise awareness about our Workshop program and raise a new crop of USk educators
USk INSTRUCTOR RETREAT PLANNING
“The instructors were excellent and so thorough. Very valuable and increased my skills tremendously. So worth it.”
We are very excited to announce the first of its kind USk Instructor Retreat to gather, bond, exchange ideas and promote goals of USk Education. We hope that this event will help provide a sense of identity and unity for USk instructors and a platform to share educational inspiration and resources. To support a new generation of instructors we can also discuss the paths for becoming a USk instructor and explore different educational activities related to drawing on location and knowledge sharing between professionals (authors, teachers, instructors). The first Instructor Retreat will take place on April 18th, 2023 in Auckland, New Zealand. USK REGIONAL GRANT PROGRAM The objectives of the Regional Events Grant Program are to equip and assist USk Chapters in hosting bigger events than their regular chapter sketch outings: build a stronger regional sketching community, empower Chapters to organize and create new types of events and activities, find ways to use Urban Sketching to reach out to communities beyond USk and, finally, create a more accessible, sustainable alternative for those who cannot attend the USk Symposium. Innovation is key to growth, and we know our USk chapters are bursting with creativity! We’d love to hear about your event ideas, and what you need to be able to enhance them. If you would like to know more about hosting a USk event - email events@urbansketchers.org

events
Each regional event in 2022 had an amazing turnout and exemplified the USk mission to raise the artistic, storytelling, and educational value of on-location drawing, promote its practice and connect people who draw on location where they live and travel. For this first year of grants, members of the Executive Board were able to join some of the events that took place and connect with sketching communities across the globe.
JULY
Indonesia’s Sketchers and Bogor Sketchers collaborated as Ciliwung Rhapsody to rejuvenate the Ciliwung river. Through initiating and building sketching/storytelling communities around the area where the river flows, the event raised general
public awareness and passion towards the river and at the same time spread the joy of urban sketching as a tool for social activism. This was proposed as a two-event programme and the second part was postponed due to bad weather and will now take place in March 2023.
AUGUST
Urban Sketching Festival (Polish: Festiwal Miejskiego Szkicowania) is a four-day long sketching festival held in the city of Świdnica, Poland. Organized by Urban Sketchers Poland with Urban Sketchers Prague and Świdnica Culture Center as co-organisers, the event featured attractions open to everyone, such as daily sketch walks, free workshops led by experienced 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 17

artists, two exhibitions, mini-fair with art materials… and much more! All events took place in the beautiful Świdnica, whose history as a city reaches the XIII century.
SEPTEMBER
USk San Diego 2022 Seminar took place in America’s Finest City – sunny San Diego. We celebrated the core of what urban sketching means by getting together and reuniting or meeting for the first time. Urban Sketchers of all ages and skill levels, from near and far, joined for a weekend filled with activities including a drink and draw in one of our most lively and colorful neighborhoods – Little Italy, workshops by experienced urban sketchers, sketchwalks and an Urban Sketch art show at the world famous Balboa Park (built for the 1915-1916 PanamaCalifornia Exposition). You cannot think of San Diego without picturing its vast waterfront, and the seminar concluded by the water, in Seaport Village, with marinas and piers, grassy areas, promenades, quaint shops and the most diverse crowd.
OCTOBER
Who has not dreamt of drawing Buenos Aires? Buenos Aires is a multi-faceted city that lends itself perfectly to urban sketching. Graphic and colorful, the main city of Argentina offers countless themes for drawing: classical and contemporary architecture, iconic monuments, lively cafes, gardens, charming and picturesque streets, wide views of the Rio de La Plata, etc. This location was a unique opportunity to discover Tango rhythms with workshops, lectures and special activities led by experienced instructors. Our workshops were about exploring your line flow, sketching people around, expressing mood and conceptual scaffolding. There were lectures about the grammar of watercolor, figure and landscape and creating vibrating sketches! 18 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
DECEMBER
Urban Sketchers PuneSketchFest-06 is a sketching festival in Pune that was held in December 2022 . This event was hosted by Urban Sketchers Pune, and celebrated the urban sketching movement of drawing on location through direct observation. Centered around an exhibition showcasing sketches done on location by urban sketchers from different chapters across India, Sketchfest-06 was a first-of-its-kind event happening in India. Be it a newbie or a veteran, there was a wide choice of urban sketching workshops spread over three days and for all skill levels. Free Demos by experts in the art of urban sketching and plein air painting inspired the attendees and guided sketchwalks introduced everyone to the art of sketching on location while experiencing the culture of this historical city.
“We think this programme is a great initiative and it helped us to start the Festival. We learned a lot and we want to continue organizing this event in the following years.” - USk Poland “I think this is a great program to foster this great Urban Sketchers community. Many new connections and reconnections are made during the event and the camaraderie throughout the event is felt by all.” - USk San Diego “Thanks a lot! This event has made it possible for urban sketchers from various Argentine provinces to come at a low cost. We also had the opportunity to have an international guest.” - USk Argentina
events
The success of the 2022 Regional Events Grant funding program provided confidence to proceed to year two. A pool of $10,000 USD was again offered, with the objective to grant $2,000 USD each to five successful recipients to deliver their programmes. Before the first season concluded in December, the call for the 2023 proposals was issued and 10 proposals were received for consideration. Confirmation of the next five winners of Regional Event Grants was announced early in 2023.
GUADALAJARA COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS AND TALKS
In September 2022, USk Executive Board members gathered in person in Guadalajara, Mexico. The main reason for the meeting was to hold strategic planning discussions for Urban Sketchers and Symposium planning. However, the Board also put together a program of free community education events that included workshops taught in Spanish and English, and an open forum with members of USk Guadalajara and neighboring chapters where board members answered questions from the community and talked about the work and history of USk. There were workshops, sketch walks and town hall discussions where we shared the joy of Urban Sketching with both new and existing members of our amazing community and took the time to listen and see where we as an organization can improve.
USk SYMPOSIUM After a hiatus of three years without an international gathering, it felt like a new start to announce Auckland New Zealand as the Host city for 2023. This was done via Instagram Live on July 7, 2022. The video message from the USk President included contributions from the previous host Ruud Otten from USk Amsterdam, Rob Sketcherman from USk Hong Kong as an acknowledgement towards their canceled 2020 symposium and Eric Ngan, new USk Events Director and main coordinator of the USk Auckland Chapter. Planning for the 11th USk Symposium started mid 2022 and fortnightly meetings for the USk Auckland Local Organising committee began in August. 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 19
events
The Education Committee also had baseline programmes well underway, including workshops, demos, sketchwalks, lectures, and skit sketch. Other event components included opening and closing functions, drink and draw locations, silent auction, raffle and final photo call.
SYMPOSIUM EDUCATION & PROGRAMMING
FUTURE SYMPOSIUMS
Calls for expressions of interest for the 2024/2025/2026 Symposiums were issued 16 October 2022 and are still open for 2025/2026 – see our online application form and further details here. Four host city applications have so far been received. Interviews and assessments for 2024 will proceed in January 2023 onwards - stay tuned!
The USk Education Committee was very pleased to have selected 20 instructors who will teach in New Zealand. In 2022, we reviewed over 150 proposals for workshops, lectures, and presentations. We will be offering four types of Educational events at the Auckland Symposium: workshops, lectures, skit sketch presentations, and demos (given by workshops instructors). Selected instructors will be representing Australia, Indonesia, Egypt, Malaysia, Hong Kong, France, US, Spain, Brazil, Israel, Austria, and Portugal. A quarter of them will be new instructors who haven’t previously taught at our Symposiums. In addition to workshops and demos, Symposium participants will have a chance to hear from fellow sketchers on such interesting topics as History of Reportage, Storytelling through Drawing, a Retrospective Look at the Urban Sketching movement, Ganapati Festival Celebration in Sketches, Urban Sketching Outreach and Community partnerships, Sketching while Walking (the Camino de Santiago) and others. These talks will be presented in the format of lectures and short skit sketch presentations. We are all looking forward to reuniting with our Urban Sketching community in Auckland, New Zealand in April of 2023. TOP: BRIAN GNYP | ABOVE: MURRAY DEWHURST 20 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

2022 COMMUNICATIONS 2022 was a year of many changes. The Executive Board appointed a new Social Media Coordinator in July and a new Communications Director in August. On top of our daily inspiring gallery of sketches, we significantly shifted using our social media channels to promote more messages about our organization.

As a non-profit organization run by volunteers, we put a high priority on our dedicated volunteers and growing global community who champion our outreach programs, events, and fundraising efforts to make urban sketching accessible to more people. We shed light on our donors and sponsorship partners who support us. By sharing the impact of our projects, we invite others to volunteer, donate and join us in our mission. Publication of the quarterly e-zine, Drawing Attention, has continued throughout 2022 with distribution to approximately 16,500 subscribers. 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 21
SOCIAL MEDIA FOCUS To all our readers and viewers, thank you. A shout-out goes to all our new followers in 2022! 2685 on Facebook, 18,574 on Instagram, and 1,100 on YouTube. We launched a monthly USk Sketch Prompt to encourage sketchers to draw a particular theme and share their drawings and also their stories based on the theme. We highlighted sketches to showcase the variety of entries from our community and to connect sketchers with a common thread.
NEW WEBSITE After more than six months of work by an amazing team of USk volunteers and the Web Developer in 2021, we went live on January 22, 2022. The new and improved site has given us the ability to communicate more easily and clearly, helps organize both new and old content and even includes an interactive map to find all of our Chapters around the globe. We are happy that it can be a place that can grow and evolve as we do as an organization. 22 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
As we have more chapters than there are days in a year, an ongoing monthly feature of our volunteers and their local chapters has been launched to get to know the members of the USk family from all corners of the globe. These posts are accompanied by music that the chapter loves to listen to. For the privacy of our members, membership settings of our Facebook group switched to personal profiles only. From October 2022, we stopped servicing Twitter as it no longer has a standards board and is being sued for violating hate speech laws in Europe.
communications
Algorithms make it increasingly challenging for our dedicated team to control who can view our posts. Having more live sessions is one way we can directly communicate with our viewers. Takeovers from our local chapters gave our volunteers a bigger platform to share their inspiring content. Our community could access a more diverse mix of what’s happening in our urban sketching world. This is something we would like to continue and do more of. Through our increasing video coverage, we highlighted the impact of our outreach programs via stories of people who donated in the past and a live interview session with USk Education Director Rita Sabler and a former grant recipient from India. 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 23

2022 SPONSORSHIP REPORT 2022 saw the pandemic restrictions being raised, and the world once again began to open to face-to-face interactions. While Zoom continued to provide a connection for many, in-person workshops and events became increasingly important, and the Sponsorship team was there in support of it all. Several sponsors including Hahnemühle and SMLT Arts donated products for use by instructors and students at the week-long Spirited Color, Line & Texture Workshop held at the USk workshops at Madeline Island School of the Arts (29 August – 2 September). Many more sponsors including Roman Szmal Art, Hahnemühle, Brevillier Cretacolor, Faber-Castell, SMLT Arts, Daniel Smith, Viviva Colors, Kuretake, Artline, Derwent, Blick and Quarto stepped in to support the USk Regional Events - July in Ciliwung (Indonesia), August in Swidnica (Poland), October in San Diego (USA) and in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and December in Pune (India). 26 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
The last quarter of 2022 saw the Sponsorship team turn their attention to promoting the 11th Urban Sketchers Symposium to be held in Auckland, New Zealand (19-22 April 2023). We cannot thank our sponsors enough for their generous support throughout this year, and we look forward to partnering with them in the years ahead. For now, we wish them and their organizations a healthy and happy 2023.
