Barac III, -; also not listed in Medals, Orders and Decorations of Iran - Pahlavi Period. Extremely fine; minor contact marks to obverse, some abrasion to reverse gilding from being worn. Possibly unique. £3,000 - 4,000 From an important private collection of Qajar and Pahlavi Shahs; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 10659-174254. This fine quality piece does not seem to be listed against any of the known or catalogued chivalrous or presentation orders of the Pahlavi Dynasty; it also has no obvious signs of having any means of affixing to a backing or for suspension, yet the reverse of the piece shows distinct wear to the gilding, obviously arising from being in close contact with a surface over a considerable period of time.
8055 Pahlavi - Mohammad Reza Shah - Order of Haft Peykar Jewel. 20th century AD. A silver jewel with obverse depicting the seven stars of the Pleiades against a blue enamel background to centre within a border of rosettes set against white enamel and with outer border of seven palmettes against blue enamel; with red enamelled crown link piece to suspension ring; the reverse plain; held in the original red box of issue with gilt arms applied to lid and printed silk interior showing the Persian lion and sun below a crown, with wreath around. 18.94 grams (84.63 grams total), 31mm (case 95 x 75mm). See Medals, Orders and Decorations of Iran - Pahlavi Period, p.90, for a very similar 3rd class jewel of this order, without enamel; see Younessi, Dr O. James, Orders Decorations and Medals of the Empire of Iran - The Pahlavi Era, pp.166-167, for information on this award. Good extremely fine. £600 - 800 From an important private collection of Qajar and Pahlavi Shahs. The Pleiades, sometimes known as the Seven Sisters, as depicted on this piece are located in the constellation of Taurus; this group of stars have played an important role in navigation and mythology for many cultures throughout history; the order was awarded to females only and this particular jewel is believed to be of the third class, from a late period in the Pahlavi Empire, perhaps dating the the 1965-1975 period.
8056 Pahlavi - 1969 - CENTO Shooting Medal. Dated 1969 AD. Obverse depicting crossed rifles above the Persian lion and sun at centre with pale blue background and MEMORY OF * CENTO * SMALL ARMS * COMPETITION inscription around, within gilded wreath with crown above and four flags showing behind and panel below with IMPERIAL IRANIAN ARMY / 1969 inscribed in two lines; the reverse with two pins and retainers affixing the badge to the leather backing with buttonhole suspension slot. 17.24 grams total, 83mm tall to leather backing. See Medals, Orders and Decorations of Iran - Pahlavi Period, p.492, for identical pieces for the years 19701972; see Younessi, Dr O. James, Orders Decorations and Medals of the Empire of Iran - The Pahlevi Era, p.301, for an example dated 1964. Extremely fine. £200 - 300 From an important private collection of Qajar and Pahlavi Shahs. CENTO was the Central Treaty Organisation, formed in 1955 by Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and the UK (with the USA joining the military committee in 1958) as a military alliance against Russian influence in the region during the Cold War era; the Organisation was dissolved in 1979; it was intended to operate in a similar way to the successful NATO in Western Europe but CENTO never achieved the same recognition and internal strife for some of the members undermined it; the use of a leather backing piece with buttonhole suspension is a quite common feature of medals and badges of this era.
