What is Radiation Therapy? Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. At low doses, radiation is used in x-rays to see inside your body, as with x-rays of your teeth or broken bones.

TYPES OF RADIATION THERAPY External beam Radiation Therapy A type of radiation therapy that uses a machine to aim high-energy rays at the cancer from outside of the body. Also called external radiation therapy.

Brachytherapy Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy where a sealed radiation source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment

External Beam Radiation Therapy External beam radiation therapy uses high doses of radiation to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. A large machine aims radiation at the cancer. The machine moves around you, without touching you. Most treatments last from 2 to 10 weeks.

Types Photons Protons Electrons

Brachytherapy Brachytherapy allows doctors to deliver higher doses of radiation to more-specific areas of the body, compared with the conventional form of radiation therapy (external beam radiation) that projects radiation from a machine outside of your body.

Used to Treat Endometrial cancer Esophageal cancer Eye cancer Head and neck cancers

Advantage for the Patients The main advantage of radiotherapy is that it may help to control the growth of cancer. You may be able to carry on with your daily life, such as going to work, if you feel up to it. If you have advanced cancer, radiotherapy can help control symptoms and relieve pain.

Disadvantages for the Patient Radiotherapy can cause side effects, including tiredness, sickness and runny poo (diarrhoea). If you have chemoradiotherapy, you may get side effects from the chemotherapy. If you have borderline resectable cancer and locally advanced pancreatic cancer, you may have to go to the hospital five days a week for your treatment, although this may vary.
