Advising & Teaching Diverse Student Populations PROGRAMS FOR ADVISORS & FACULTY

Engaging and Inspiring Students to Be Their Best Self CULTURAL AWARENESS AND FLUENCY ARE CRITICAL FOR EFFECTIVE ADVISING AND TEACHING Advising and teaching are about helping students become their best –– intellectually, interpersonally or professionally. Indeed, building trust with students is a vital part of our work. As students diversify across nationalities, races, religions and genders, empathy and engagement with students who are different from us are ever more critical to advising and teaching efficacy. In this guide, I’d like to introduce you to three core programs for 2018: 1. BUILDING CULTURAL COMPETENCY - FOR ADVISORS & FACULTY Understanding cultural preferences is essential to effective advising and teaching. Whether international students or first generation domestic students, they see, hear and speak from a different cultural perspective. I offer multiple programs that build awareness and offer practical strategies to increase advisor and faculty comfort to engage.

2. IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING FOR ADVISORS AND FACULTY Judging others is baked into all human beings. Judging others without personal consciousness and responsibility, however, unnecessarily creates misunderstanding, division and disengagement among students. Advisors and faculty can learn how Implicit Bias works, its effect on students’ learning and devise strategies to interact with less personal bias.

3. DIALOGUE – A TOOL FOR DEVELOPING MUTUALITY ACROSS DIFFERENCE Difference tends to separate people. That’s a reality. Being with people who are different from us stirs up feelings of unfamiliarity and discomfort, causing us to remain divided. Dialogue, a facilitated conversation that aims to build mutual understanding through sharing of self and curiosity of others, is vital for connection, community and collaboration.

ADVISING WITH CULTURAL AGILITY An Essential Professional Skill Understanding cultural preferences is essential to effective advising. Advisors have given us high praise for helping them bridge the cultural gap to develop strategies for improved support for international students.

Overview International students are different. They are different in their interpersonal engagement, communication styles and sense of self. Their difference stems from cultural norms that can vary greatly from that of Americans. Advisors who understand “why” international students act the way they do are significantly more effective in adapting their coaching style to the nuanced needs of international students, resulting in students who trust and engage. With trust in advisors, students are more likely to reveal their authentic selves and discuss what is really going on.

What is Covered • Comparisons of cultural preferences between the U.S. and countries with the highest number of international students in the U.S. • How cultural preferences impact student utilization of, and engagement with, advisors • How an advisor can shift coaching styles to build a relationship of trust and efficacy • Communication and verbiage that is well-received by international students

Format ✲ 3 Hours — mix of lecture, discussion and role play ✲ Additional $60/person for individual cultural preference assessment

TESTIMONIALS FOR CULTURAL ADVISING SESSIONS We're thrilled university academic, career and student life advisors as well as faculty, have found our cultural training helpful and practical to implement

The role-playing exercise was particularly helpful in providing insights into how those from other cultures feel in certain situations.

Judy was so real -- I loved how she was upfront and honest about everything. The cultural preferences were super helpful. And I really appreciated her advice on how to support students in advising -those are lessons that will be helpful for all students, not just international students.

One of the most useful sessions I've been to. Thank you for organizing and bringing this amazing speaker. I look forward to more workshops with Judy.

UNDERSTANDING IMPLICIT BIAS & ITS EFFECT ON ADVISING & TEACHING Judging others is baked into all human beings. Judging others without personal consciousness and responsibility, however, unnecessarily creates misunderstanding, division and disengagement among students. Advisors and faculty can learn how Implicit Bias works and its effect on students and learning. Overview As student populations get ever more diverse and global, differences in norms and expectations are to be expected. Advisors and faculty may unconsciously misjudge certain students’ behaviors due to differences in norms rather than actual competency / ethical issues. Exploring our tendency to judge others, acknowledging that we each have untested assumption of others and learning how to shift our consciousness, are at the root of Implicit Bias Training. Tailored exercises help attendees notice their assumptions of select social groups and enter into discussions that enable development of personal strategies to engage with others more effectively.

What is Covered • Defining Implicit Bias • Addressing Implicit Bias and its impact on individuals and the community • How individuals can build awareness of their judgment and employ practical strategies for advising and teaching • Discussion using case studies, personal experiences and inquiry process

Format ✲ 3 Hours — mix of lecture, discussion and role play

IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING SESSIONS Attendees’ learning and takeaways from discussions

It was very honest and did not shy away from what could be considered "controversial". It didn't walk on egg shells.

Recognizing my implicit biases, be active in questioning [whether] I am supplying information about an individual from subconscious presuppositions.

It was informative, relevant and very interactive, which kept me engaged.

You can probably not control how you "react" but you can control how you "respond.

DIALOGUE – A TOOL TO BUILD ADVISOR EMPATHY AND LISTENING CAPACITY Advising at its best is about understanding the implicit needs of students -- the real needs that aren’t at the surface. Empathy and deep listening are vital to connecting with the core needs of students. These qualities and skills, however, need to be nurtured among advisors given everyday demands can make interactions more transactional and less relational. Empathy and deep listening skills can deepen with regular practice among colleagues and peer advisors. Overview Advising effectiveness is as much about empathy and deep listening, as it is about knowledge transfer. Empathy and deep listening come with practice. Unfortunately in our nonstop, technology driven environment, taking the time to practice relational engagement with another person is ever more challenging. This Dialogue session introduces participants to the art of mindful listening -- starting with mindfulness and self-awareness then other-awareness and practical steps for listening, feeling and responding when in conversation.

What is Covered Understanding • Why Dialogue and Understanding are Key to a Connected & Engaged Community • The Dialogue Process: Understanding key elements in Conversing-to-Connect Doing Dialogue • Personal Journey Storytelling: Understanding ourselves and what matters to “me” • Dialogue: Small group practice on topics that build listening and relational skills
