J.E.B. Stuart wore an identical Hardee hat made by the very same French maker, “Latour and Prince - Paris” however this General Officer’s Hat was worn by Union General Thomas Welsh of the 9th Corps While J.E.B. Stuart’s Hardee hat is on permanent display at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, this is the finest known US General Officer’s Hardee Style hat in private hands. It is in immaculate condition and comes with its original wooden hat box with a label on the lid “General Thomas Welsh - Dress Hat.” Welsh commanded the Ninth Corps’ First Division during the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi and died shortly after the battle of malarial fever. He was appointed brigadier general just a few months before he died. Welsh must have only worn this magnificent hat a few times, as it is in the condition that collectors dream of. It has a tall Jeff Davis-style 7 inch high crown with an ostrich plume, a cockade, a black silk band on the brim, a gold thread general officer’s bullion hat cord, a mint “US” within a wreath badge on the front of the hat and an equally magnificent gold bullion side Eagle (see back cover) that holds up the right side of the brim. The black sweat bank measures 2-5/8 inches with a gold stamped maroon lining that is flawless and embossed in gold lettering Deux Medailles de La Classe - “Chapeau Excelsior” - Latour and Prince, Paris. This rare and superb Zouave coat is accompanied by an officer’s vest that has a fully beaded front with brass buttons and is piped in bright red. Medical Cavalry Hospital Steward Custom Made Shell Jacket One of the rarest Civil War uniforms in existence – “Medical Cavalry Hospital Steward” custom made shell jacket. Each sleeve has custom made, long half-chevrons of the regulation Medical department. Made of green wool cloth with bright gilt medical service insignia on a cavalry shell jacket. High standing, faded light green collar has two “C” buttons on each side. All other buttons are “C” including two on each of the functioning cuffs. The sleeve width at the elbow is 9 inches wide, while the cuff openings are 4.5 inches. The chest portion of this uniform is heavily quilted and lined with green linen. Hospital Stewards were warrant officers, ranking above company first sergeants. Besides the Surgeons, they were the only men permanently attached to the Medical Department. This a unique uniform, the type of which has never been offered before, and is among the rarest of Civil War uniforms known to exist. ....... $22,500

Brown of Company C, 95th PA throughout the war from 1861 to 1865 with “Battle Honors.” A patriotic motto is painted around the peep hole. Original leather tabs with brass rivets, rope and tension cords make this a remarkable and historical drum. 79th New York “Highlander” Scottish Brigade Hat This 79th New York “Highlander” Scottish Brigade hat was worn by Lieutenant Alexander; who can be seen full standing in his kilts wearing this hat in the photograph. A bird plume and black silk ribbons, made in Glengarry, Scotland were imported for their brigade. The maker’s name is embossed in silver. This is one of the rarest hats of the Union Army. I have never seen one offered before. Accompanied by copy print of Alexander’s photograph and his commission. He enlisted for the war on December 9, 1861 in New York City, and mustered out in 1865 as a Captain. ....... $17,500

5th Connecticut 12th and 20th Corps Badge Grouping This tremendous grouping includes Lieutenant P. P. Wilson’s three Corps badges, his lieutenant’s shoulder straps and his Bowie knife. He was wounded at Culps Farm, GA during the Atlanta Campaign and had his leg amputated. The top two Corps badges are made of red wool and the other is from a silver half-dollar that has been enameled. The lower right 5th Infantry silver badge and ribbon are great examples, and have Battle Honors engraved on verso – Winchester, Chancellorsville, Cedar Mountain, Gettysburg and Kenesaw Mountain. His IXL Bowie knife is made by Washington Works in Sheffield, England and is in its original 19th century oak frame. ....... $9,500

The Rarest Confederate Corps Badge - TEXAS 1864 This badge was made and presented by the Ladies of Houston to the Texas artillery man, W. Jett, of the Jeff Davis Guards for the Battle of Sabine Pass, Texas. The City of Houston was saved during that famous battle when 19,000 Union invasion forces attempted to capture the city from the sea. The Davis Guards fired light artillery cannons from a makeshift fort at the mouth of the Sabine River and turned back the entire Union assault force. Beautifully made with a home-spun cadet grey ribbon, this badge has a hand cast copper of the Battle Flag engraved with the motto “Victory or Death.” The badge itself is engraved on a Mexican silver dollar with simply “D.G. & W. Jett” and a battle flag on verso with date of the battle. This is one of only seven known to exist of the 49 that were presented by the Ladies of Houston on the first anniversary of the battle. This one was actually presented personally to a soldier and firmly identified. Confederate President Jefferson Davis visited Houston and an identical medal was presented to him. A similar medal was recently sold at auction with no identification for $50,000. The rarest of all Civil War and Texas medals in existence. A museum showpiece. ....... $42,500

The Rarest Union Corps Badge - 1864 United States Colored Troops Medal was designed and presented by General Benjamin Butler. This badge was struck in pure silver and depicts two black US Army soldiers charging a fortification like Battery Wagner. It has the original silk ribbon and silver clasp. “Army of the James” pin with an Eagle claw is holding the uncirculated and mint medal to the ribbon. Interesting to note that many of these medals were presented to US Colored Troops in Brownsville, Texas during the final days of the war! Only 197 of these silver medals were commissioned by General Butler. They were made by the Boston jeweler Bigelow and Kennard, and engraved by artist, Anthony Paquet. This the first medal ever presented to US Colored Soldiers in the field. A remarkable and historical showpiece. ....... $34,500

Third Army Corps Badge The Third Army Corps Badge 18ct gold badge was made by Tiffany and worn by Colonel Madison M. Cannon, Company G, 40th New York Infantry. It is accompanied by photographs, including one of him in uniform wearing this very badge. Also included are his wedding pictures in both albumen and tintype. A remarkable and very beautiful corps badge, fully documented, from this hard fighting officer whose regiment lost 420 men during 3 years. Known as the Mozart Regiment, they were recruited in New York City and fought in all the battles against Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia – including the surrender at Appomattox. This badge was designed in September 1863. All officers of the old Third Corps joined the organization to take care of each other’s families should they fall in battle. ....... $7,500

Richmond “CS – 1862” .58 cal Musket with a Harpers Ferry US Arsenal stock An excellent Confederate musket made of both Confederate and prewar US parts from the captured US Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, VA. The Confederate gunsmiths at the Richmond Arsenal converted these stocks to fit their Confederate locks, even used some of the barrel bands in conjunction with their own, what ever it took to get these musket’s in the hands of Lee’s soldiers. The lock plate is clearly marked “C.S. Richmond, VA and dated 1862”, the wood is excellent as is the overall condition, and has a brown russet shoulder sling. This is the gun that fought the war and has an interesting history of manufacture. ......... $8,900

Confederate Field Waist Belt With Cap Pocket And Holster – Richmond, VA This Confederate Officer’s belt rig is the only example in private hands made by the Richmond Hormen Shop in Clarksville. In a letter from Major Dinwrinkler to Captain Pride in Clarksville, Dinwrinkler instructs Pride to make belts from floor scraps, because of the shortage of material in the Confederate Arsenals. An identical belt is in the Museum of the Confederacy’s collection. The belt is 46 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide, with a “D” buckle made of pot metal then painted mustard yellow, and the leather is an oil finish brown, typical of Confederate leather. The Holster would hold a .36 caliber pistol and the Cap Pocket, also Confederate made, is made of Goat skin (an identical Cap Pocket is on display at the Atlanta Historical Society.) 2nd Model Maynard Carbine .50 cal serial #10032 with saddle ring About 20,000 of these 2nd Model’s were produced from 1863 - 65. This carbine is in fine condition, with two distinctive military cartouches stamped into the stock wrist. The serial number suggests possible issue in late 1863 or early 1864, which was known as the year of “attrition”. The Maynard was highly regarded as a fine carbine and easy to load, it was used by the 11th Indiana, 5th & 7th Kansas, 10th Tennessee and the 1st Wisconsin. Spencer Rifle Carried By Jacob Neff, 6th Ohio Sharpshooters, General Thomas’ Body Guard This Spencer Rifle serial #2240 was issued to Private Jacob Neff, 6th Ohio Independent Sharp Shooters. A hard fighting unit, they fought in all the Battles in Tennessee including Nashville, Missionary Ridge and the bloody Battle of Chickamauga where these Sharp Shooters played an important role in saving the Union Army. This was the primary repeating rifle of the Civil War with a 30-inch barrel and .52 caliber. It was purchased by Neff from the government at the end of the war as per National Archives muster roll. Also, accompanied by archive copies of the original order issuing this rifle to him in 1863...... $9,800

Spencer Carbine serial #58300 in .52 caliber is identified to have belonged to James Harper of the 1st New York Mounted Rifles. The stock of this US Army issue gun is beautifully engraved with his name in script lettering. This type of carbine was widely used in the west after the Civil War. Harper swapped his gun with his fellow cavalry trooper, William Day, who brought it home from Texas at war’s end. The 1st NY Cavalry lost 159 men and led an active roll in the siege and battles of Petersburg and the Confederate Capitol of Richmond, VA. Superb and a museum showpiece. ..... $6,500

General J.E.B. Stuart’s Courier’s - Butternut Enlisted Man’s Uniform and Haversack Private Gallaher was the personal courier to General J.E.B. Stuart. His butternut Confederate Army issue shell jacket was worn while a courier at the General’s headquarters and on the battlefield. It is one of the few Confederate identified Courier Uniforms known to exist. Communication was of major importance between the Confederate Commanders both before and during the battle. The trust instilled into young Gallaher by his hard fighting commander must have been tremendous and well earned. Private Gallaher lived through the war, although Stuart was killed by a sniper’s bullet in 1864. Accompanied by his service records, as well as a Les Jenson Letter of Authenticity. Kentucky Confederate “State Guard’s” Uniform, Belt And Cartridge Box Of Private B. Coleman As rare as any Confederate regulation uniform, this Kentucky State Militia frock coat was discovered at a plantation outside of Louisville, KY called “El Nido.” The owner had previously served in the 5th Virginia Infantry (Stonewall Brigade) and the Coleman family owned the Louisville Rolling Mill nearby. An exquisite cadet gray, single breasted frock coat with large gutta percha buttons on the front (each marked N. R. Co/Goodyear), cuff buttons and tail pockets. It has blue “Infantry” trim and high standing collar, and the name Barry Coleman is written in ink inside the sleeve. The Kentucky State Guard was formed during the early days of secession by CSA General S.B. Buckner and was, in fact, the most well organized of all the southern states militias. Accompanying this uniform are copy-print photographs of their camp near Louisville where they are wearing similar uniforms to this. Less than a dozen of these types of Southern militia uniforms are known to exist. They are far rarer than conventional Confederate uniforms. ....... $32,500

J.E.B. Stuart’s Sword Hanger, His Signed Letter and His Patent Document Kansas Territory 1860 US Army Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart received a patent in 1859 for a Cavalry sword hanger that he designed. In an effort to secure a contract for his invention, he wrote from Fort Riley, Kansas Territory on January 25, 1860 to his friend Colonel Sam McCamant in Richmond, Virginia; asking him to intercede for him with the chairman of the Committee of Legislature of Virginia to purchase 500 copies of his design. 6-Pounder Field Gun Model 1841– And Original Limber Modified And Used By The Confederate Army This Big Gun’s history could fill a book! This type of cannon with its amazing condition and history – just does not exist, even in US Army or in Museum collections. We have never seen anything like this gun and its limber, which totals 26 feet long, as most are weathered from being stored outdoors, or dug and then painted. This gun has always being cared for and has its original, soft bronze patina. The Limber is crudely hand carved with cast iron blacksmith brackets and tongue for a team of 4 horses. The ammunition caisson would have held 50 cannon rounds and 75 friction primers and is completely intact with shelves that have collapsed over time – yet untouched. The State of North Carolina markings on the check pieces are of the utmost historical importance and clearly stamped N.C. 1862. The carriage has an Atlanta Arsenal belt plate hammered into the drag; and the carriage itself has been painted Confederate gray. With field modifications by the North Carolina troops, it has chocks to accept a 12 pdr or the 6 pdr cannon tube. Only one Confederate 6 lb was at the Battle of Gettysburg with the North Carolina troops. Made at the famed Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, this gun had a range of 500 yards and was widely used by State Militias (North Carolina) before the war. It is listed in the National Register of cannons as private ownership in Raleigh, North Carolina. ......... $125,000

6-Pounder Field Gun Model 1841 with original limber. This was the work horse of the US Army/Confederate Army. In original configuration and original soft bronze patina, it carries both US, CSA and North Carolina state markings.
Only one Six-Pounder was at the Battle of Gettysburg, Latham’s Battery, Longstreet I Corps, Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. This cannon marked N.C. 1862 may have been there. Mint condition.

Superb Confederate Boyle and Gamble Foot Officer’s Sword This beautiful sword is in excellent condition and is completely original throughout. The overall length of the sword is 37½ inches and the blade measures 29 5/8 inches long. The brass guard is of the typical rose design with intertwining vines. The grip is leather with most of the original brown color dye and has twelve winds of medium heavy single strand brass wire, all intact. The brass guard shows a beautiful age patina, having never been cleaned. The leather scabbard is top-seamed and has brass mounts and brass carrying rings. The dyed brown leather is thinning, showing a shallow reddish brown color. Scabbard is in excellent condition, showing no weaknesses. The brass mounts are screwed onto the scabbard and, along with the brass carrying rings, show an even aged patina. This is a near mint and original Confederate Officer’s sword made by the Boyle and Gamble Company of Richmond, Virginia who armed most of the officers of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. This sword was previously on exhibit at the Confederate Armory Museum in Gettysburg, PA and is from the collection of Fred Edmunds. ......... $9,500

Confederate General Thomas Benton Smith’s pistol Commander Of The 20th Tennessee Infantry During The Battle Of Nashville Colt .36 caliber revolver inscribed on the back strap “Thomas Benton Smith” - the famous Confederate General captured while defending Shy’s Hill during the Battle of Nashville. He was later tortured by the Union Officer that had captured him by being struck on his head 3 times with his own Sword, causing permanent brain damage. Prior to his capture/torture he had a prominent military career. General Jon Breckenridge presented the 20th Tennessee with a beautiful Confederate Flag; which was made by his wife, who cut up her wedding dress to make their flag for them. It is assumed that “This Revolver” was also presented to General Smith at this same time as the flag. Confederate Major General W. B. Taliaferro’s Camp Trunk General Taliaferro was an intriguing man – Gloucester County, Virginia aristocrat, Major General of militia, Harvard educated lawyer, Virginia delegate and regular US army officer and Mexican War veteran. Taliaferro gained notoriety as another of the South’s officers who got on the wrong side of the great Stonewall Jackson. Taliaferro served under Jackson in his Shenadoah Valley and Seven Days’ campaigns and, despite their shared devotion to strict discipline, bickered – much to Taliaferro’s detriment. Taliaferro was wounded at Groveton, and, in July 1863, he commanded Battery Wagner on Morris Island. (He was the commander who resisted the assault of the 54th Massachusetts Colored troops of “Glory” fame.) At the close of the war he commanded a division under Joe Johnston in North Carolina. The trunk was purchased from the Taliaferro family by an early collector and personal friend, Jim Moser of Orange, Virginia decades ago. The trunk has replaced hinges, and minor repairs to bottom. Latch is original. This sturdy pine trunk measures 42 1/2” long x 18 3/4” wide x 15 1/2” deep. Overall condition is excellent! ......... $6,750 Lot 2279

Lieutenant Josiah M. Hubbard - 11th Kansas Cavalry Uniform Lieutenant Josiah M. Hubbard, 11th Kansas Cavalry ca. 1862 - a superb frontier cavalry officer’s uniform with his original “eagle” sword belt of brown russet leather. An abolitionist, he followed John Brown to Kansas in 1856 to ensure that Kansas was a Free State, meaning that slavery was not allowed. He was with Henry Ward Beecher when he made his famous bible and rifle speech and he was in Lawrance when it was sacked and burned by Quantrill’s men which included Frank and Jesse James. In 1862 he enlisted in the 11th Kansas, immediately went to Arkansas and fought in the “Battle of Pea Ridge,” and later against Hindman’s Arkansas Confederates at the Battle of Prairie Grove. He then served escorting wagon trains to Fort Gibson where they fought numerous battles against Cherokee General Stand Watie and ended the war fighting Sioux Indians near Fort Laramie. His only brother was killed at the Battle of Antietam in 1862. After the war Lieutenant Hubbard was responsible for opening the first school in Kansas for the freed slaves. An extremely rare border war cavalry officer’s uniform worn by this follower of John Brown who not only fought to make Kansas a free state before the war but fought to keep it free during the war.
