Cheyenne Full size, fully beaded cradle with the original boards. C. 1910. The boards have an ornate brass tack design in the form of an Hour Glass. A rare and wonderful northern plains Indian cradle for a newborn baby, elaborately decorated with silk ribbon and brass hawk bell drops. Has a quilled and beaded top ﬂap and beaded designs on the hood, as well as around the opening. Sioux Full size and fully quill work cradle cover. C. 1875. This is one of the finest examples in existence. Not only is the quill work exquisite, but the coloring that is applied to the porcupine quills is as bright and as vibrant as the day it was made. It has long rawhide dangles with metal cones and died plumage ornamentation, and is lined with a bright calico trade cloth. The Sioux mother that made this for her child did so with the utmost care and perfection. A museum showpiece with custom stand and Plexiglas display. Ute (Southern Colorado) Very Large, Full size cradle board with reeded hood. C. 1870’s. A magnificent full size cradle board, and the only example like it in the entire collection. The Utes were the only ones to build cradles for children that were this large. Native tanned hide is rubbed with yellow ochre and has German silver studs down the front. The sunshade is made of bent willow reeds which, in profile, resembles an Egyptian style cradle of Biblical times. It is fully intact and quite rare as such; as these cradles saw hard use by the Ute mothers that carried these children on their backs across the Rocky Mountains. Arapaho Ledger Drawing by warrior “Heap of Bears” using a captured US Cavalry sword to count Coup. C. 1870. This is from the famous Peter Edwards ledger book. Edwards was an English born jeweler who came to America in 1848, and in 1860 traveled in the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush to Colorado where he met the southern Arapahos that drew this for him. He soon died in Denver in 1872, which firmly documents this as one of the earliest known plains Indian ledger drawings. It is pictured in “Folk Art of the American Indian” by Schorsh and it was the very first drawing in the Edwards ledger. The Arapahos from Colorado drew pictographic memories so they could pass along their history with accuracy, unaware that they were, in fact, the first western artists. It depicts a well armed cavalryman with a saddle ring carbine and a pistol riding for his life while Arapaho warrior, Heap of Bears, counts coup on him using a captured US Cavalry officer’s sword that is decorated with otter skin tails. Exceedingly rare to have the entire history of a well documented and very early plains Indian warrior ledger drawing. 8” x 12” ......... $14,500

The Union Pacific Railroad divided the buffalo into 2 great herds in the northern and southern plains, and also made it possible to ship buffalo hides to the eastern tanneries. Buffalo hunters slaughtered the American buffalo at a rate of 3 million a year; which doomed the Plains Indian way of life, and by 1883 only a few hundred buffalo were still left on the western plains. Western Endurance Rider, Frank Hopkins’ (Hidalgo) presentation double vest pocket chain with Remington pistol, pocket watch & Wild West Show medallion. C. 1880’s. Presented to him by the famous Wild West Show promoter, Buffalo Bill Cody and Pawnee Bill. Believed to have been made in Germany and presented to Hopkins during the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show tour of Europe in 1889. This pistol is a German copy of a small caliber Remington, and is engraved on the frame, silver plated, and has black ebony grips. The name “Frank Hopkins” is engraved across the top. It has a ring on the bottom of the butt that the watch chain is attached to, and the chain measures 26”. The watch was made by Elgin Watch Company with a Hunter case. On the face is the bust of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill in wonderful 1/8” relief detail. The same pictures are also on the face of the medallion. It reads “Buffalo Bill-Pawnee Bill”. On the back is engraved “From Col. W.F. Cody & Maj. G.W. Lillie, To: Frank Hopkins”. Frank Hopkins was the famous endurance rider and real life subject of the Hollywood movie “Hidalgo”. His most acclaimed ride was in Arabia, where in 1890, he rode 3,000 miles in 68 days on his Western bred mustang named “Hidalgo”; which he had bought from a Sioux Indian Chief. Hopkins and Hidalgo won that race against over a 100 Arabian horses and desert riders. Extensive provenance with historic western showpiece along with a signed letter, dated 1959, when this item was gifted from friend to friend. The watch is 1.25” in diameter. Buffalo Jones’ cut down Springfield Musket. C. 1870’s. A famous frontiersman and Buffalo hunter, Charles Jesse Jones hunted buffalo in Sterling, Kansas in 1874 thru 1878, where he most likely used this gun for protection on the frontier prairie. It is know that he killed over 4,000 buffalo using the same type of .50 caliber Springfield riﬂe as Buffalo Bill did. He also had an interesting career after the great buffalo herds were gone. He was the sargeant at arms of the famous land rush of the Cherokee strip in 1893, then went on an exploration of the arctic in 1897 and 1898. When he returned he was appointed by President Teddy Roosevelt as the first warden of Yellowstone National Park; where he hunted mountain lions with Zane Grey and was elected to the Cowboy Hall of Fame. He was good friends of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill. Numerous books have been written about his life in the west, including one by his friend Zane Grey. This is a thoroughly documented westernized Civil War gun which has been cut down for use on horseback with a custom made grip on the stock. After the Civil War it was converted by the Springfield Armory into a Model 1869 Trapdoor with arsenal inspector markings. This gun previously won First Place at the Las Vegas show in 1990. Derby Felt Hat Manufactured by the Stetson Company. 7 3/8”. Advertised within John B. Stetson Company Grand Prix 1900 Paris, and sold by the Wiens Company Park Street-Butte, Montana. Shows very little wear. Cane measures 35 1/2”, handle is two colored gold and says JNO. J. A. Herrle dated 12/25/89. Also included is a set of five poker dice made in France - original box. Spanish Colonial America - Spanish “Morion” Helmet. C. late 16th or early 17th century. Was purchased at Butterfield Auction 1997 (Cat. Item #30). It was placed in auction by the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco as a deaccessioned piece. Research of the museum’s records, by Ted Greenburg, shows that this helmet was given to the De Young in Nov. 1895. Mr. De Young was also the founder and organizer of the California Midwinter International Exposition, which was held in 1894. He received the helmet as a result of solicitations in his newspaper for historical items to be displayed during the Expo. At the conclusion of the Pan-Pacific Expo, this was donated to the Memorial Museum located in the Golden Gate Park. This is one of the great rarities of Spanish Colonial American weaponry. ......... $6,350

Many of the Spanish soldiers accompanying the Conquistadores lost their lives in the trek north looking for the fabled city of Cibola (City of Gold). Both of these items were discovered in a cave on private land in New Mexico, and they are both well preserved; which is typical of high desert discoveries. Many of the ships from the Spanish Main that sailed from Categena, Columbia and Veracruz, Mexico were lost at sea in the shallow reefs near the Florida Keys or sunk by pirates. This bell being one of them, it is beautifully cast in bronze and dated 1702, and the names of the Holy Family are cast around its bell housing (JESUS, MARIA and JOSEPH). This bronze Swivel Canon was primarily mounted and used on the back deck of a Gallion in close quarters during battle at sea, as it was easily stored and then brought on deck by 2 sailors and fired at close range. Beautifully cast in bronze, this canon has a pair of dolphins as handles on top the barrel. These Lankanka style canons were cast by the Spanish in their Pacific colonies, but used throughout the Spanish Main.
