Conservation Block in the Wimmera - Jo Connellan President Elect Jo Connellan presented to the club on the 20th July on her conservation block in the Wimmera. The block is approximately 140 acres, lies 10km south west of Birchip and is part of the landcare links through the local landscape. Jo acquired the property in 2009, where she commenced a planting/revegetating programme in 2016. There is some existing vegetation, including two of the three main canopy trees indigenous to the area – the black box (Eucalyptus largiflorens), buloke (Allocasuarina leuhmanii) and the mallee pine (Callitris gracilis), which almost vanished from the landscape in the early years of settlement. Jo and friends have been planting all three species, which will continue for the next 3-5 years. What was largely missing was the understory layer – a mixture of various plants including wattles and Pittosporum. Planting of this layer commenced in 2016, and will continue for 5-10 years. The ground cover had largely disappeared, due to sheep grazing, is being reestablished itself in all its diversity. At this stage, it is assumed that this will continue, and little new planting will be required. The buloke tree is endangered in Victoria. Given the block had quite a few specimens, a conservation covenant was granted by Trust for Nature, which will protect the block in perpetuity. Jo showed photos of this year’s work, which saw 650 plants planted. Planting season is quite limited – between the first autumn rains, which can be as late as the end of April, and before the first frosts, which can be early June. Given increasingly creaky joints, Jo is planning to plant out half the block in the next 3-5 years, and then assume that natural regeneration and/or the next owner will complete the task.

Our Guest Speakers Moreland Rotary invites speakers to our club both from our local community and further afield. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are invited because they hopefully inform and stimulate our members and guests. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in. However the opinions expressed by our speakers do not necessarily reflect any official viewpoint of Moreland Rotary nor those of individual club members. Irrespective of this we always offer a warm Rotary welcome to all of our speakers.
