2022-23 Rotary International President For Rotary, “finding the right ‘part’ to engage each member should be our core function,” Jones said. “It comes down to the comfort and care of our members.”

Engaging members is crucial to retaining members, she said, adding that we need to ask members what they want to get from Rotary and give them meaningful responsibilities.

Rotary International President-elect Jennifer Jones wants members to imagine the possibilities in the change they can make to transform the world.

Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, revealed the 2022-23 presidential theme, Imagine Rotary, as she urged people to dream big and harness their connections and the power of Rotary to turn those dreams into reality.

“Imagine, a world that deserves our best,” Jones told incoming district governors on 20 January, “where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference.”

Jones, who will make history on 1 July by becoming Rotary’s first female president, gave a live online address to precede Rotary’s annual training event for district governors from around the world, the International Assembly. The assembly was rescheduled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and will now be held virtually 7-14 February.

Jones told the incoming governors about a chance she took when a member asked for assistance in getting a young peace activist out of Afghanistan during the U.S. troop withdrawal last year. At first unsure how she could help, she relied on “that certain Rotary magic” and contacted a former Rotary Peace Fellow she had met a few years earlier. Less than 24 hours later, the activist was on an evacuation list, and soon she was on her way to Europe.

Engaging members through meaningful responsibility To better engage members, Rotary needs to “adapt and retool,” Jones said, using her hometown as an example. Windsor was once the automotive hub of Canada. But after plant closings left thousands without work, the city needed to retool, in the same way an auto plant would, preparing for new parts or a new model. Now, Jones said, Windsor is a leader in agribusiness and medical and aerospace technology.

“It is our offer of hands-on service, personal growth, leadership development, and lifelong friendships that creates purpose and passion,” Jones said.

Embracing change also means embracing new club models, Jones said, as she asked the incoming governors to form at least two new innovative or cause-based clubs during their term. “Let’s make sure we engage our members so they love their clubs and their Rotary experience,” she added.

Jones also announced the appointment of a Rotaract member as a Rotary public image coordinator and said that she has included Rotaractors on several committees and will assign some Rotaractors as president’s representatives.

“We have been entrusted with leadership in our great organization,” Jones said. “Now it is up to us to be brave and intentional in our actions, and let others help us lead.”

Jones noted that Rotary has little time left to achieve the RI Board of Directors’ goal of having women make up 30% of Rotary’s members by 2023. Rotary has achieved this in more than 110 countries, she said, but it has a long way to go. She pointed out that Rotaract has already achieved 50% female members.

To raise Rotary’s profile, Jones plans to hold a global impact tour that will include talking with leaders about working together to address the world’s most pressing challenges. “Rotary opens these doors and we need to harness our connections, to deepen these relationships and create new partnerships,” Jones said.

“And the best part is, this can happen at every level of leadership.”

Jones closed her address by saying that although we all have dreams, acting on them is a choice we make. When an organization like Rotary dreams about big things like ending polio and creating peace, she said, it becomes our responsibility to make them happen. “You don’t imagine yesterday,” Jones said, “you imagine tomorrow.”

2021-22 Club President Emma Davis We have also managed some socials including our Moreland Rotary’s 25th Birthday Celebration (with cake), Christmas picnic in the park, social breakfast with bubbles for Christmas wrap up, Royal Botanic Gardens tour, tour and breakfast at Peppertree Place Coburg and Merri Creek walk. Our DEI support included an article for District news and Trevor’s attendance at Midsumma.

We effectively managed two District Grants this year. The first was for community, environment sustainability and education with both a Backyard Gardens Forum and sponsoring some laptops in the Ghyangphedi school Nepal. Thanks Elly and Trevor for bringing these to our attention.

Amongst all of this, we have had several informal meetings and planning for club activities for events.

We hosted a very successful inaugural Lift the Lid Walk for mental health on World Mental Health day, October. Our planning team accepted and embraced the COVID restrictions, pivoted our planning, and our members, community and sponsors all came on board. 2021-22 Club President Emma Davis

Our Reflect, Respect and Celebrate community breakfast with thanks to a National Australia Day grant had a wide reach to 19 different community groups and Rotary clubs. Federazione Lucana provided a lovely breakfast and coffee, welcoming entertainment by Anna and Cam and MC Grant Godino. Event supplies, services and gifts from Coburg Printworks, Peppertree Place Nursery, Sorrento Café, Officeworks and Bunnings. We were thankful to Betty Kitchener for video message and Dr Claire Kelly, Director of International Programs Mental Health First Aid Australia, for her keynote speech and encouraging question time.

This led nicely into a club activation for Mental Health First Aid training programs that teaches how to help a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. We have now been able to engage a facilitator and run two courses; to train 40 people in our community with this two-day program. Thank you for Moreland Rotary for funding 30 of these MHFA course costs.

Four of us headed to District Conference in Marysville and were all represented in our various portfolios. We also have four on District Board positions and three more on District portfolio teams and so are always well represented at District commitments, including Committee of Management and, training and assembly.

Cluster meeting and commitments have been significant given this year was my third and final term as Assistant Governor for District 9790’s Cluster Two, a challenge I’ve enjoyed.

From 2021/22 changeover in June

In April I was able to enjoy a four-day visit from Rotary International President Elect Jennifer Jones and her Events Team. I also hold a role on the 2023 Rotary International Melbourne Convention Host Organising Committee (HOC) as Director House of Friendship. The HOC were able to showcase Marvelous Melbourne and we have had remarkable feedback. An RI board member shared recently that “Rotary International is delighted with the quality of planning and organisation being undertaken by the local Host Organising Committee….The local team is regarded by RI leadership...as one of the best ever”. The professional opportunities of this team are excellent, and I truly enjoyed, perhaps a little too much, my time with Jennifer Jones, an inspiring and genuine leader.

I look forward to the relaxing, social, casual brunch we have planned together for club changeover brunch at Merri Cafe CERES. Thank you for a wonderful year Moreland Rotary, each and every one of our members are friends that proudly Serve to Change Lives.

Introducing our 2022-23 President, Trevor Moyle 3. Moreland Rotary Club - “the club that punches above its weight” Some 6 or 7 years ago I gave consideration to joining Rotary to support the work that I was undertaking in Nepal. This decision however was made easier after attending a few breakfast meetings as a guest and seeing the decisive and participative nature of the membership group.

This appealed to me along with the shorter breakfast meeting formats, leading to a decision to becoming a member and enjoying the various roles and friendships gained along the way.

Knowing that members will support me as President gives me confidence that we will enjoy another good year, based on the appeal made by PI President elect Jennifer of a call to action down to the level of all club members.

When considering another term as President of Moreland Rotary, I found myself asking the question of “how can I make this happen?”.

This helped me find inspiration from three levels of Rotary, which made my decision so much easier: 1. Rotary International We go into a new Rotary year with inspiration coming from the peak of our organisation starting with election of our first ever female President in Jennifer Jones.

Even before the start of her term Jennifer has already made a huge impact by reaching out to all members to imagine the possibilities of what they each can make to transform the world.

Her call to adopt inclusiveness and to engage all members as Rotarians in action is inspiring and gives me encouragement of a revmp of the Rotary image and a reversal of declining membership levels.

2. Moreland Rotary Leadership Current President Emma has been an inspiration to us all with her leadership from the front.

I see many opportunities for achievement and positive challenges for the club to take on. Next year with priorities in the following: Providing a weekly meeting programme including that create opportunities for participation, valuable information and community engagement.

Supporting individual members with work in their area of passion, such as Brian in the area if disability, myself in Nepal and Rosemary in respect of Australian Rotary Health Working on plans to let our community know about our good work, and promote the opportunity new membership.

Focus on projects that underpin valuable community partnerships with organisations such as Moreland Council, Merri Health, Glenroy Disabled Scout Group, Inner North Community Foundation and Youth Projects Continuing with the wonderful work that the club has undertaken in the area of Youth Mental Health In aspiring to such worthwhile objectives I look forward to promoting enjoyment of each other’s company throughout the year, whether in projects or social interaction.

So to follow in her footsteps is an honour, especially with her continuing support as Past president.

The other vital link to leadership continuity comes from the decision Jo Connellan to take on the President Nominee role.

Having Jo involved will be of great assistance to my role, which I plan to give back to her when she takes of the President role next year.

Youth and Education YHOP (Youth Engagement Pilot Program) District Funds contributed to YHOP in Moreland YHOP in Moreland was funded by Moreland Council and community partners including Moreland Rotary in 2021 as an early intervention outreach service to engage 25 at-risk young people from the local area. Individualised support was given to each young person that was tailored to their needs. Some of the outcomes resulted in connections to housing, mental health, education and training, employment and crisis supports.

Moreland Rotary seeded this partnership project through access to District Funds which were designated for the Orange Sky Homelessness Project. Our Club approached Youth Projects, who are a youth specialist organisation, to coordinate a program to assist in homelessness prevention in Moreland.

The Pilot ran for 6 months and due to the high needs through Covid, double the number of young people were supported during that time period. Moreland Council has recognised that this casemanagement program is needed in the local area and subsequently will continue to partner with Youth Projects to continue funding a full-time Support Worker for the next financial year.

Moreland Youth Mental Health Programme The club has developed a deep commitment in recent years to Youth Mental Health (YMH) in Moreland, facilitated with partnerships with the Moreland Council and Merri Health.

Our role has included organising events such as open forums in conjunction with World Mental Health Day in 2018 and 2019, and an online forum during the first year of the Covid pandemic. Moreland Rotary has been recognised as an independent agent of change by connecting many stakeholders, all with a common interest in Youth Mental Health.

This work was continued in the past year with the following highlights:

Encouraging comments from the young people include: “I wasn’t able to leave the house but within a short time, YHOP helped me become comfortable with living in a new area and this helped me with getting a lot of other stuff that needed to get done” “I wouldn’t have been able to attend all my appointments without the help of YHOP” “Thank you so much for all you have done for me, you did more than I expected!”

“I love the place that YHOP helped me get. It’s very nice and it’s great to finally have my own space without worrying what will happen to me.

Thank you to all the partners and, in particular, Youth Projects for their valuable work in creating pathways for young people at risk.

We are already planning for continuing YMH projects in the coming year.

Scholarships Our club continues to award scholarships to worthy students at Mercy College Coburg and Penleigh Essendon Grammar School (Mark Galgano Youth Achievement Award).

Community and environment Merri Creek Walk

The Merri Creek (Merri Merri means very rocky in Woi-wurrung) flows through the northern suburbs of Melbourne to join with the Yarra and was home, a source of sustenance and a trading route for the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people for centuries. The arrival of Europeans from the 19th century saw a transformation of the creek, not for the better, with grazing, urbanisation and industrialisation turning the creek into little more than a polluted drain. A proposed freeway development alongside the Merri in the 1970s led to a “rediscovery” of the creek which was now being seen with new eyes.

The huge challenge was to reverse the degradation and to restore the pre-existing natural values as far as possible. This led to community and subsequently government mobilisation which saw considerable investment in the creek environs over several decades with protection and restoration of parkland, revegetation and the recreation of plant communities and landscapes.

A number of us, Rotarians, friends and community representatives gathered in Fawkner in April for a walk and talk though the grasslands on Bababi Djinanang (mother’s foot in Woi-wurrung), down the creek valley with its escarpments and basalt outcrops and on the plain with its she oak forest through to the footbridge and via Moomba Park on the Merri Creek Trail.

We saw the considerable restoration of the stunning landscape that has occurred though thousands of volunteer hours particularly by Friends of Merri Creek and residents combined with professional support from the Merri Creek Management Committee and Moreland Council, that has led to improvement in local biodiversity and the return of once vanished birds and animals such as the Sacred Kingfisher. We saw evidence of extensive community plantings and modern day fire management used to help regenerate indigenous plant species and we also met a few of the other local “residents” such as Magpies and Tawny Frogmouths. We also learned how the Wurundjeri cared for their country over the millennia and of current day indigenous involvement in the restoration of the Merri.

Our walk was planned in the context of Rotary’s commitment to the environment where Rotary clubs around the world are engaged in environmental projects be they hands on or for community education such as this one.

The Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s philanthropic arm, now has as one of its areas of focus as the environment and resources will flow to Rotary clubs and communities to underpin and drive this focus, something which will grow as we meet the environmental challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Peppertree Place

Just off Bell Street in the heart of Coburg is a rather delightful secret something we were privileged to share as a place for our regular club meeting in April.

This well kept secret is Peppertree Place which is part of Kevin Heinze Grow – an organisation set up to provide gardening for recreation, occupation and wellbeing. The success of this formula has led the way in therapeutic horticulture for over forty years helping people of all ages wide range of physical and neurological conditions.

Moreland Rotary members were treated to a delightful breakfast at the centre and given a tour of inspection by Marketing and Fundraising Manager Georgia Tracy, which included the propagation shed with the propagation mats that Coburg and Moreland Rotary helped fund .

Backyard Gardens

Rotary continues to be involved in the local program Backyard Farmers Project (BFP). This project seeks to address the increasingly important issue of local food security. BFP matches aspiring urban farmers with homeowners (“land hosts”) who have large, underutilised backyards.

The farmers develop a market garden in the backyard, growing organic produce for the local community. BFP is run by Growing Farmers, a Moreland community-led organisation.

Over the past year BFP has grown substantially. The second round of farms was established in January, now with five farms, 11 farmers, five land hosts, five mentors, and a group of local volunteers. The farmers have planted their first winter crops and are developing lots of skills, networks and friendships.

Last year Rotary supported BFP with funding to run their very first learning workshop for the farmers. This workshop was overwhelmingly successful, and since then BFP’s workshop program has expanded enormously. The current round of farmers participate in 8 free full-day workshops, to learn a range of important skills such as seed propagation, soil health and Caring for Country. The workshops are delivered in partnership with market gardens and environmental organisations around Victoria, including Ceres and Joe's Market Garden, and Gung Hoe Growers.

Australian Rotary Health (ARH) and Mental Health Lift The Lid on Mental Illness Moreland Rotary organised the first ARH Lift The Lid Walk for Mental Health in District 9790 on October 9, 2021 - World Mental Health Day. Unfortunately, COVID restrictions prevented the walk taking place in person at Coburg Lake as planned. However, the event went ahead with participants from Essendon to Eltham, Torquay to Sunbury; out in force walking and talking about mental health in their local communities and raising funds for mental health research. Walkers donned the eye catching purple LTL t-shirt, with platinum sponsor Merri Health emblazoned on the sleeve. The event raised more than $4,500 for ARH mental health research.

Thanks also to our other sponsors Coburg Football Club/Piranha Foods and the Inner North Foundation for their support as well as Rotarians in District 9790 who participated. Planning is underway for the Moreland LTL Walk on October 10, 2022 at Coburg Lake.

For over five years now Moreland Rotary has focused on Mental Health in our Community.

ARH Indigenous Health Scholarship: Moreland Rotary along with four clubs from Group 2 - Coburg, Pascoe Vale, Preston and Strathmore, have continued the sponsorship of Indigenous Health Scholar Lani Harris who will complete her nursing degree in 2022. The five Rotary clubs have each contributed $500 annually towards Lani’s scholarship and the $2,500 is matched by the Federal Government. Lani completed a mental health placement during the year and would like to eventually work in that field.

ROTARY CLUB OF MORELAND ANNUAL REPORT

Mental health first aid (MHFA) is a training program that teaches members of the public how to help a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. MHFA courses can provide members of the community with: Skills in how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems Knowledge of the possible risk factors for these mental health problems Skills in how to give appropriate initial help and support someone experiencing a mental health problem Skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises involving suicidal behaviour, panic attack, stress reaction to trauma, overdose or threatening psychotic behaviour.

Whilst there was a large showing of Moreland members and their local community, we also had Rotary representation from Diamond Creek, Eltham, Pascoe Vale, Strathmore and the RYLA Supporter team.

We arranged for the program to be delivered by Aleksei Bondarenko – Edwards, of Bond and Wild Co. Moreland Rotary purchased textbooks, and branded notebooks, pens and lanyards for all participants.

The initial two day course hosted at Pascoe Vale RSL was on Sundays 27 March and 10 April. With demand, a second hosted at Federazione Lucana was on Saturdays 30 April and 7 May 2022.

International and District The international projects included the work of the two Nepal based foundations founded and chaired by club member Trevor Moyle. a. SmileHigh Foundation SmileHigh works closely with its partner Kathmandu University School of Medical Science (KUSMS) with a focus of supporting Community Oral Health Programmes and the transfer of knowledge from organised visits to Nepal of Oral and Dental health specialists.

This included the conduct of a highly complex jaw reconstruction operation for a young Nepalese woman, which was achieved through SmileHigh working with 2 Melbourne based Oral Maxillofacial surgeons organise a construction of a complex prosthesis which was shipped to Nepal for a 9 hour operation supervised remotely from Melbourne. Further programmes are planned for the coming year. b. Community Leadership Nepal Foundation (CLNF) CLNF focusses on projects which involve leadership training and empowerment of communities to produce long term sustainable outcomes. The focus has been on the following two projects. i. Ghyangphedi Community Development Project – with challenging objectives of overcoming long term ingrained low levels of education and health, accompanied by substance and alcohol abuse, poverty and girl trafficking. The work in the current year has been focussed on women and girls empowerment with many programmes, in partnership with a US foundation, Global Orphan Prevention, which has funded the completion of a hostel and girls empowerment centre that will facilitate wider education and mentoring of vulnerable girls in the community.

A Community Development programme is underway which involves education and training in areas such as Agriculture, Womens health, adult literacy and Community Leadership and governance ii. Manechauka Sustainable Agriculture Education Programme which involves supplementing an academic science based Dip Ag Sc (similar to VCAL and TAFE courses) with a wider range of agriculture education supplemented with practical training on a school working farm. The courses attract over 100 students each year from all over Nepal for a 3 year course .

The concept of this project is to develop a practical approach to learning in areas such as • • • •

`practical regenerative/organic agriculture more effective agribusiness skills , especially in supply chain management More efficient land use and diversity of production reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.

The course also involves the development and training in support of education modules that give the students to take back their valuable to their communities.

District/Multi District involvement Rosemary Freeman is the District 9790 Community Service Chair, District 9790 Australian Rotary Health Representative and is on the Bushfire Recovery Committee. Nino Galgano is a District Legal Officer. David Redfearn is coordinator of the District 9790 Peter Toomey Community Police Awards, a member of the District 9790 Environment Task Force and District 9790 Bulletin Editor. Emma Davis is Assistant Governor, Group 2 and Director of the 2023 Convention Host Organising Committee. At a multi district level, Brian Bennett is on the Shine On Awards committee.

Police Awards We didn't hold a club police award this year but David Redfearn was involved in coordinating the District 9790 Peter Toomey Police Award which is named in honour of the late Peter Toomey of Pascoe Vale Rotary and which recognises a police officer in our Rotary District who has given great service to the local community.

The year the award went to First Constable Elise Morgan of Darebin Police nominated by Preston Rotary for her work in the field of mental health in the local community

The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace with projects focussed on achieving improvements to health, quality education, the environment and alleviating poverty. Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

Moreland Rotary has been a regular provider of funds for the Foundation, which this year involved donations of $1000 to the Foundation itself and $900 for the End Polio Now project via club member contributions.

The club successfully applied for 2 District Grants of up to $2,500 this year. One was in support of a Sustainable Agriculture Education Project in Nepal overseen by Community Leadership Nepal Foundation. The other for a Community agriculture project called Backyard Farmers.

A further grant application of $2,500 has been submitted for consideration next year for Menstrual Education project in Nepal, supported by Community Leadership Nepal Foundation and Days for Girls.

Raising money|Spending our money|Communications|Club membership Membership Membership development for our club and Rotary in general has been a very difficult during the year. Although our numbers remain unchanged during the year, we believe that clubs achievements during the current year together with exciting plans for next year will provide a very good platform for growth.

Governance Our club was incorporated in 2019 which obliges us to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) each year.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzles We have been running barbecues at Bunnings Warehouse in John/David)

Gaffney Street, Coburg for several years now but still challenging than this Rotary year due to the pandemic and lockdowns. These are normally a great source of revenue for the club but this of course was not the case again this year.

We did however manage to get back to Bunnings before Christmas 2021 and in autumn this year under modified rules to enforce social distancing for maximum protection against COVID infection and we found that they ran well. These were as usual ably organised by John Hoffmann with the support of club members, family and friends. They are always fun occasions and bring out the may talents within our team. The funds raised go to towards supporting local projects.

Key club decisions including financial are taken at our monthly board meetings which have both a formal agenda and are minuted.

Donations Moreland Rotary makes a number of donations throughout each Rotary year. Some are recurring such as our scholarships for local schools, some are for Rotary programs, some are for crisis/disaster relief programs while others are for projects in the local community we wish to support. A number of organisations may also approach us during the year for support and these are dealt with on their merits.

Communication Letting our community know what we do as well as keeping club members up date is vital for our club. We publish an award winning weekly newsletter, The Morelander, and have a presence on Facebook and Twitter. Nothing beats personal contact though so we use our rich networks to constantly keep in touch with the local and wider community.
