Welcome to the fifth DG’s Newsletter for the 2020 – 2021 Rotary Year, the year when “Rotary Opens Opportunities”.

At the time of writing (November 3rd) we are getting closer to “freedom” from the COVID-19 travel restrictions from Melbourne, and hopefully closer to opening of the border with NSW. After this week we will have completed DG visits (by Zoom) to 55 clubs in total. Most of the eight remaining clubs should enjoy “in person” DG visits rather than Zoom if restrictions are removed and borders are opened. I might finally get to wear my official DG regalia!

Marilyn and I will take every opportunity for the remainder of the Rotary Year to visit clubs in person, especially when a club is having a birthday or a special event.

As advised in last month’s DG Newsletter Marilyn has decided on a “Partner’s Project” in association with the Olga Tennyson Autism Research Centre at La Trobe University (OTARC). An updated description of the proposed Partner’s Project appears later in this Newsletter. Contributions can be sent to the District Fund Account BSB 633 000 Account 140 378 365.

Please make sure you specify the funds are for the Partner’s Project.

The Autism Project will feature in the Annual Rotary Club of Strathmore Combined Night to be held on the evening of Wednesday January 13th, 2021 (Save the Date). The Guest Speaker will be Professor Cheryl Dissanayake, Director & Chair, Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre. More details will be forwarded closer to the date.

My Rotary Learning Centre Training Module Update: At last count we have had 284 modules completed including multiple modules by some members, 309 modules are partially completed, and a massive 714 modules have enrolments from members but no further progress. Last month’s figures were 278, 236 and 669, respectively, so progress has been made once again!

As noted last month our District Conference Committee is pushing ahead hoping for a big, live party in Wangaratta in March next year and we are getting quietly confident that we will be able to have a conference “live” as planned, and possibly with supplementary video streaming, unless we go into a “third wave” of COVID lockdowns. More details on the Conference appear later in this newsletter.

In recognition of World Polio Day on October 24th our District donated 20% of this year’s District Designated Fund (DDF) allocation to PolioPlus. Our US$14,977.80 will be matched dollar for dollar by the Rotary Foundation generating US$29,955.60, to then be matched two for one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a total contribution to PolioPlus of US$89,866.80. Well done us! Also, a big thank you to those clubs who ran fundraising activities for World Polio Day and contributed directly to PolioPlus. I should be able to report our total contributions next month.

The DGs across Australia all agreed to donate US$2,000 from their respective DDF to support a Global Grant application to the Rotary Foundation for Delivery of Nursery Equipment at Saint George Hospital University Medical Centre in Beirut, Lebanon.

The hospital was severely damaged by recent the Beirut Port Explosion.

All Rotary Districts are being encouraged to establish a District Resource Network, essentially a register of members with skills appropriate to undertaking our many and varied projects onshore or internationally.

District International Service Chair Kerry Kirk is compiling the database for our District and will be looking for volunteers to be District Representatives for each of our Areas of Focus. Please contact Kerry for further details about the roles and to express your interest.

Building capacity in the regions for early diagnosis of autism.

Partner's project for 2020.

The Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC) is based at the La Trobe University campus in Bundoora and has twelve years of sustained research and experience in early autism assessment and diagnosis. Diagnosing children with autism early in life is important, because it allows parents to access early intervention therapy and gives children the best chance to reach their potential. While the need for access to early diagnosis services is equal across Victoria, families in rural areas are disadvantaged. This is because there are fewer expert clinicians in rural areas compared to Melbourne. With Rotary’s help, OTARC can close this gap and enable rural families the best chance to help their children thrive.

Our focus will be on providing assessment & diagnostic service to children below 3 years showing early signs of autism within District 9790.

2. Building Capacity – Run workshops at rural centres to train rural/regional professionals such as GPs, maternal and childcare nurses, allied health and speech pathologists in Rotary district 9790 to build skills to undertake assessments & diagnoses themselves.

Doubling up on happiness and well-being

Mental health awareness and well-being was centre stage at Holbrook Rotarians’ Hats Off to Mental Health night held at the home of Anne and John Cox.

One of the highlights was walking around and enjoying the views of a beautiful rural garden, thriving vegetables, fruit trees and John’s dry-stone wall sculptures, bridges, pathways, and borders.

Bruce Quick’s pizza dough was a triumph – few of us had seen so much dough in such a massive dish. The magic was in its lightness and movement: scrumptious too.

Bruce believes making freshly baked bread (and pizza dough) is healthier, tastier, creative, soothing, and psychologically satisfying.

The constituents were simple: baker’s flour, water, salt, and yeast. Bruce added the yeast to a measured quantity of warm water and let it sit for about 15-30 minutes, so the yeast activated. He added the flour then the salt last. His warning: adding salt directly to the yeast water mix can kill the yeast. He used a

Bruce said, “the dough I made up for the pizza night is the same I use to make my daily bread loaf; the difference is the bread dough “proves” and then requires a second rise for the pizza base.”

Adding to his well-being theme, he noted, “The Huntington Post reports that in 2017 five people who were mental health residents at Bethlem Royal Hospital in London had six two-hour sessions baking bread by hand and answered weekly questions. They reported feeling happier, creative, and having a sense of achievement.

“Bread, the most staple of food; starting with the same ingredients as people making bread 2000 years ago and ending with a product that will feed the family …. is very satisfying.

“I recommend it, everyone should bake a loaf of bread at least once in their life,” Bruce said.

Vale Past President Michael Galluzzo Michael wanted to change the world and was destined to do great things being a natural leader who saw the value of an education for himself and for others.

Michael was the son of Jean and Joe, brother to Tony, Rosie and Angela, a fun and proud uncle and fiancé to Franco [dec. 2017].

The Galluzzo family have established a First Nation Students Education Scholarship in Michael’s memory.

Michael will be buried at Narrandera NSW, Wiradjuri Country.

Michael was a strong, calm, compassionate and remarkable man, behind a kind smile. I was privileged to call him my friend.

Michael Galluzzo, of Aboriginal and Italian descent, was a remarkable person who died tragically at 34 at Royal Melbourne Hospital on 10 October 2020. He was kind, caring, loving, generous, smart and empowered to give back to the community.

Michael completed Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts degrees at Australian National University. He was committed to always helping others, professionally Michael focused on Law, Communications and Marketing; the Principal Strategist with The Healing Foundation. He was a role model intent on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Peoples across Australia to give Indigenous opportunity.

When he moved from Canberra to Melbourne, Michael used Rotary as a connection to the community and we are so pleased he did. His Rotary history includes · 2015/16 President Gateway Rotaract 2015 Rotary Youth Leadership Award participant July 2017 Inducted to Rotary 2017 RYLA Supporter 2019/20 President Strathmore Rotary Paul Harris Fellow (+1) Platinum Presidential citation

Bushfire Recovery - Rosemary Freeman

As the Upper Murray region emerges from a long harsh winter, many are still struggling; their energy sapped by the cold and their isolation magnified by the COVID restrictions.

This has caused some to feel forgotten and frustrated, their mental health and well-being vulnerable as a result. Farmers are waiting to have fences rebuilt to secure their properties. Some are still living in temporary accommodation with portable generators for power, dealing each day with the effects of the inclement weather or ill health. The District Bushfire Recovery Committee has been able to provide compassionate grants of $2,500 from the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society fund (RABS) to assist those in need. Applications have been made by health service providers in the area, community leaders and Rotary clubs on behalf of those experiencing disadvantage, sickness or financial loss. Nine grants have been made and applications continue to be received for evaluation by the committee. It has taken time for many experiencing hardship to ask for or accept help.

Yarrawonga Mulwala have supported this important event by covering the cost of the printing on caps to be worn on the day, in memory of the three young men.

The advent of warmer weather, the signs of regrowth and new life has brought some optimism to the communities as they prepare to implement the plans made to rebuild and upgrade facilities and to bring the communities together.

As the COVID restrictions in Melbourne and surrounds are eased, Rotarians will soon be able to visit the Upper Murray and participate in planned community projects as spring leads to another summer.

Fencing projects have continued with BlazeAid camps at Corryong, Tooma and Jingellic, supported by volunteers able to enter the region. The Uniting Church/Rotary Fencing Team has been clearing property boundaries and erecting new fences for much of the past nine months in the Upper Murray region.

They report that thirty three landholders have been helped and more than six thousand volunteer hours have been completed over that period. Rotarians from Benalla have been regular volunteers. Rotarians from Albury, Wodonga and Tallangatta have supported the fencing teams with food and meals. The Rotary Club of Alexandra’s Fencing project, organised by Ian Gibb, spent four days in Dandongadale, a remote area in North East Victoria’s high country at Suggarloaf Station, helping the property owners clear boundaries and rebuild fences. There is more work to do in the area and the Alexandra team will return in late October.

District Bushfire Recovery Committee With the mental health of the communities of the Upper Murray in mind, the One Foot Forward Walk from Cudgewa to Towong is planned for Saturday October 31st. This community organised event will bring people together to raise awareness and support for all those in the Upper Murray devastated by the bushfires, the loss of three young lives this year and the challenges faced every day. The District Bushfire Recovery Committee and the Rotary Club of

‘I Am Woman’ Polio Movie Event 2020 Back in 1966, Melbourne born singing sensation, Helen Reddy, won the Bandstand Talent Contest and was given a ticket to New York including a recording session with Mercury Records.

This single mother and young daughter left Australia with high expectations – but things didn’t work out as promised. However, she stayed in the USA and rose to global stardom – her defining song being ‘I am Woman’ which she wrote. It became the anthem for women in the 1970s.

Though the movie has been shown on TV’s Stan, Rotary has been given exclusive rights to screen it in cinemas during October and November - nationwide.

The movie is this year’s fundraiser for PolioPlus and is being run as a tribute to Sir Clem Renouf who began the fight to end polio in 1979.

Rotary, with its partners, is SO close to eradicating Polio in the world that we need to make this final push to get the job done!

Wherever restrictions allow, get together with a glass of bubbles at a local cinema reacquainting with people you may not have seen for a while.

It’s just a matter of contacting your local cinema and asking them to get in touch with Transmission Films, the distributor, then rounding up a bunch of Rotarians and friends and choosing a date.

So let’s have some FUN and raise lots of funds for Polio!

SUPPORTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Our Task Force has already started working with Clubs via our Assistant Governor clusters to understand the capabilities of our District Rotarians and build a framework for supporting the Environment and to seek our worthwhile project opportunities.

So far our Groups 1, 2 and 3 Presidents with AGs Julie, Emma and Kaye have met with the Task Force and are now determining how their Clubs will work towards Supporting the Environment.

In the meantime discussions have started with potential Environmental partners to ensure our projects are relevant for the future and well supported with up to date professional experience and research. So far the Task Force has sourced opportunities pertaining to Food Security, Bees, Pollination, Responsible use of Wood and Plastic Recycling. Some Presidents have indicated more partnerships exist within their own club areas.

If you have a strong interest in the Environment then make sure your President is aware of your desire to get involved in a club project that interests you.

Tip for the Month: With young birds now about, parrots, ducklings, magpies and others, many are not car savvy and end up being hit on our roads. Be prepared to stop and remove the dead /injured bird from the road as others will return to assist it and as a consequence be struck also.

All Rotarians can make a contribution towards a Sustainable Environment.

Police Awards The Peter Toomey Memorial Community Police Officer of the Year Award goes to an outstanding Victorian or NSW Police Officer in District 9790 who has demonstrated service above self in his or her community.

Charles La Trobe College Interact Rotary Rosanna reports that Charles La Trobe College Interact, qualified for the Rotary Citation for Interact Clubs. Brian Summers received the citation and will present it when it is possible.

Aitken College Interact Aitken College Interactors spent much of this unusual year focussing on mental health. They presented at assemblies, surveyed students and arranged messages of hope for R U OK day and for Mental Health week. The Club has over 30 regular members and can have up to 50 students involved in their activities.

The Rotary Club of Greenvale sponsored one student to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in Canberra in January. The student enjoyed the experience even though it was cut short by the bushfires.

The Interact Club of continues to be supported by both the Rotary Clubs of Greenvale and Brunswick – Tullamarine.

Interact Around the District The Interact clubs of St Helena Secondary College, Montmorency Secondary College and Diamond Valley College are not meeting.

Youth News Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) 2021 Lake Nillahcootie Camp

COVID permitting we will hold the 2021 RYPEN Seminar from 26th to 28th March 2021 at Lake Nillahcootie Camp. Local Rotary clubs will canvass students with numbers being requested to register by 5th March 2021.

The support team moving forward consists of: D9790 Chair: PP Malcolm S. The 2020 program had a number of new initiatives that worked very well and will be included in future programs. The program will be designed to cover all eventualities that would be faced by those attending. The young people will be encouraged to accept the challenges that will be placed before them and to attempt them to the best of their abilities.

With our Support team bringing a more professional approach to our supporting and debriefing segments and a new approach to RYPEN marketing strategies to encourage more Rotary Clubs to become involved, we look forward to an exciting future for D9790 RYPEN 2021. Thanks.

Making a difference - Portsea Camp The Portsea Camp first started 1946 as The Lord Mayors Camp, with the aim of bringing regional children to the city, for a break, but mainly for health checks as here was no Medicare back then. A bit over 25 years ago, the camp was taken over by The Portsea Camp Group. Since then they have run school camps through the year, with the profits funding what are now called Making a Difference (MAD) Camps, generally to bring disadvantaged children from around the state and metro Melbourne, for a break from their home environment, with the ability to participate in lots of different fun activities, to make new friends and generally have a good time. This works well, we now have many leaders at camp who first came as campers, and who got such a positive experience from it they've returned to give back and help others.

Unfortunately with COVID the Portsea Camp hasn't run any school camps, and now has no funds to run the MAD camps. According to the camp's CEO, the shortfall needed is around $60,000 per camp to run the camps in 2021. This amount is slighter higher than normal as it covers the extra cleaning and other tasks required for COVID compliance.

Rotary Yarrawonga Mulwala’s believes that, if each one of our 64 District clubs including Rotaract, donates say

$250, $500 or $1000, we would raise enough to fund one Making a Difference camp.

If we also approach the other Victorian Rotary Districts, and all clubs donated towards this we would be able to raise enough, to fund all five MAD camps.

Rotary has a long and proud history of association with the camp, with both the Lord Mayors and later with current Portsea Camp. The past CEO said during the 25th anniversary celebrations, that if it wasn't for the Rotary Clubs of Victoria, they wouldn't have survived.

I am hoping that our District will get behind this and help The Portsea Camp get through next year and help the children, who after COVID, are probably in more need of such a place and give them the chance to Make a Difference for hundreds of children.

Michael Galluzzo The RYLA Family is missing our great friend, Michael. What a spirit! Michael provided endless support of people from his various roles as a husband, brother, uncle, cousin, son, friend, mentor, manager, Rotaractor, RYLArian, Rotarian and roles we would not know about.

A Wiradjuri man, Michael guided non-Aboriginal people to cultural understanding seamlessly with ease. Michael was a role model to RYLArians in his Supporter role and insightful in co-designing and facilitating the Community Night session amongst others. Michael provided his leadership in all aspects of his reach. The phrase ‘he was comfortable to be Michael’ fit so well no matter where he was or what the circumstances. My experience with this is treasured memories of Michael at RYLA being absorbed in the moment dancing to the morning ‘radio’, in a state of absolute joy and passion.

We are grateful to be your friends. We are with you and you with us, Michael, and will always be remembered. Rest peacefully.

BusyFeet in Deniliquin One girl sat in the corner on her first week but did not participate but on her second week she was fully participating and screaming with joy. After that her carer said she was so looking forward to subsequent sessions and couldn’t stop talking about it.

Last year following our attendance at the Multi-District conference in Melbourne, we decided to implement a project we saw at the conference that was dear to the hearts of our members.

We have even had two students doing their Community Service component of the Duke of Edinburgh Award participate (before lockdown!).

Following a zoom presentation by Lyle Chasemore (lylec@netspace.net.au) from Rotary club of Stonnington who started the BusyFeet program, a dance and movement activity for children with intellectual and physical disabilities, in Stonnington, we started Busy Feet in Deniliquin and had a few sessions only then to have it postposed due to the Coronavirus.

Lyle then produced a video: https://youtu.be/1xocrA8rYhQ which substituted as a means for the kids to continue BusyFeet during lockdown.

Subsequently BusyFeet Melton started conducting live BusyFeet sessions on a Saturday morning so some of our kids were are able log in and dance away at home.

I think this has been an extremely satisfying activity that our club has implemented and we cannot wait to again start live classes. Seeing the joy on the kids faces and seeing them come out of their shell makes the heart swell.
