Celebrating World Mental Health Awareness Month The club celebrated World Mental Health Awareness Month at our meeting on 21st October with a number of guests.

We have a proud connection with Mental Health through our contributions to Australian Rotary Health (ARH) and directly in our own community working on various Youth Mental Health initiatives.

So it was very pleasing to have our very own Rosemary Freeman give us and our guests an update of the work of ARH, and introduce the keynote speaker Lawrence Harvey from headspace Glenroy.

Australian Rotary Health - a wonderful Rotary organisation Rosemary spoke as long serving Rotary District 9790 representative on ARH. She gave an excellent overview of the organisation for which she has made an outstanding contribution.

The information provided by Rosemary highlighted the substance of the work of ARH as an important part of the Rotary organisation, including the following key points: ARH is one of the largest non-government funders of mental health research in Australia and is a community service program in all Rotary districts.

ARH was established as a charitable fund in 1981, the idea of Mornington Rotarian Ian Scott, who wanted to raise funds for research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Its mission is to create better health and well-being for all Australians through improved education and the advancements in knowledge gained from medical research.

The major focus of ARH now is mental health research, but funding is also provided for general health research, scholarships for rural medical and nursing students and Indigenous health scholarships.

Over the following 40 years with the generous support of Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and Districts throughout Australia, ARH has funded more than $48 million in research. In 2020 ARH has allocated $3,150,217 to grants, scholarships and funding.

The Lift the Lid on Mental Illness campaign was launched by ARH in 2016 on October 10th, World Mental Health Day. It has become a national fundraising and awareness raising campaign annually, which also aims to destigmatise mental illness in all communities.

The lucid presentation highlighted why we as Rotarians as well as our guests were impressed with the work of ARH.

Celebrating World Mental Health Awareness Month (continued) Youth Mental Health: Covid and Beyond This was the theme chosen by our keynote speaker Lawrence Harvey, who is Clinical Services Manager at headspace Glenroy.

Lawrence provided an incisive presentation firstly by taking us from the fundamental principles and facts on mental health through to issues experienced in our community and how young people are affected, particularly during the Covid pandemic.

Some facts about Mental Health – What is Mental health? …a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community (WHO, 2014) Mental Health Problems – are common and less severe than mental illnesses, but may develop into a mental illness if they are not effectively dealt with.

Mental Illness or Disorder - is a health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and interacts with other people.

Some key Mental Health Statistics – One in five (20%) Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental illness in any year Almost half (45%) Australians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime The most common mental illnesses are depressive, anxiety and substance use disorder 2 to 3 % of the adult population will experience a severe mental health condition such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder 75% of mental health problems have their onset in young people aged 12 to 25 54% of people with mental illness do not access any treatment The proportion of people with mental illness accessing treatment is half that of people with physical disorders The Covid Pandemic and Youth Mental Health – Lawrence described how Covid-19 has become a generation defining disruption, which will have a multifaceted disproportionate long-term impact on young people’s lives.

The statistical basis of this conclusion is demonstrated through: 33% increase in young people presenting to emergency departments for intentional self-harm over the past six weeks compared to the same time in 2019

19% increase in presentations for urgent and emergency mental health services over the past six weeks 11% more people are contacting services for inpatient or residential program care compared to the same time in 2019 The higher incidence of Youth unemployment has exacerbated mental health issues and is a link to increased suicide rates.

Extensive Telehealth survey results have reinforced the impact on youth mental health from Covid and having to rely on Telehealth vs in person service delivery.

Supporting young people has become more effective as systems and experience develop but there is still considerable concern about the future.

Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System Lawrence gave a clear update on the interim report on the Royal Commission : The system is broken Underfunded Access is not equitable Emergency departments are entry points Families and carers are left out Mental illness is even more complex for some groups Suicide Demand has overtaken capacity Metro vs Regional/Rural Workforce Some recommendations fast tracked: An additional 170 acute mental health beds for young people and adults in areas of need Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement program Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Centre Establishment of Victoria’s first residential mental health service designed and delivered by people with lived experience of mental illness A new approach to funding Workforce initiatives It was a fitting way to mark the occasion by both clearly informing us of important facts and commentary on Mental Health presented

by Rosemary and Lawrence as two committed individuals in dealing with the growing challenges of mental health particularly amongst young people in our community.
