Michael Carney tells us about the Coburg Harriers and their amazing athletics coach

Award of Excellence for Club Bulletin 2018-2019

REVITALISING THE COBURG HARRIERS Michael Carney is Pascoe Vale South born and bred. He lives there still and is a proud Moreland local. He is also very keen on sport and athletics and running in particular and this is what led him to be involved as President of the Coburg Harriers athletics club, a club which had a lower than ideal local profile with a real risk of disappearing despite a proud 125 year history and a connection with greats in athletics such as another distinguished former local, Raelene Boyle.

Michael has quite impressive leadership experience having been initially a teacher and holding senior positions at Latrobe University, Tennis Australia, Victorian Government and being on a number of boards. He is currently the Director of Operations (a shared interim CEO role) at Montsalvat.

He is now bringing his local knowledge and leadership skills to the Coburg Harriers as they strive to revitalise and provide a good sporting option for local people, young and old, men and women and from the numerous cultures which make up our rich and diverse community.

Michael wants more people to engage in the sport and he also wants the club to have a strong relationship with all parts of the community hence reaching out to Rotary. He has also been in touch with bodies such as Reclink and Carinya along with other sporting clubs and this has proved successful with the Coburg Harriers now training the Coburg Table Tennis club best players in fitness as well as the Big V Basketballers from the Coburg Basketball Association. The club has produced a bold strategic plan and has lobbied the council for improved infrastructure and new people have come onto the committee as part of the revitalisation of the club.

Moreland Council has committed to the revitalisation and the buildings will receive a much-needed refurbishment this year and it is hoped the track will follow with a full resurfacing sometime after that. The venue is called the Harold Stevens Athletic Track and is a very safe place for everyone due to it being fenced making it more secure.

The club is celebrating its 125th anniversary dinner on March 27 at the Glenroy Bowls Club with none other than Raelene Boyle as a guest speaker. Tickets to the dinner are available from the Coburg Harriers website. Michael visited our club as part of getting the Harriers better known in the local community and we look forward to future conversations with him and the Harriers about how we may offer our support.

COBURG HARRIERS - KEVIN'S STORY Kevin – Modou Njie, a Brunswick resident, has an amazing story to tell.

He is the former National Sprint Coach for The Gambia and led their team to the Commonwealth Games Gold Coast 2018. An elite sprinter in his own right and now devoted to teaching excellence, Kevin is keen to form an elite sprint group and drills and skills to all club members.

Kevin is highly qualified for the role being an AA Level 1 Club Coach. Junior Development squad coach for Little Athletics Victoria. He is currently coaching young people for the Harriers and it is truly wonderful to watch him working with them as he brings out the very best in them.

The club is currently supporting Kevin in his role both financially and with assistance in travelling to events but it is also looking to find sustainable forms of support to be able to continue doing this. This is challenging for a volunteer body but the committee is investigating ways of making this happen and is reaching out to the Moreland community and beyond for support. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in.
