Senior Constable Shanice Abdelrehim - working with our diverse community The club was privileged to have Shanice speak to us at our meeting on 19 August. Shanice was the winner of the Rotary District Peter Toomey Community Police Award in 2018-19 and prior to that winner of the Preston Rotary Club award. She was then based in Darebin and developed a very good relationship with the Rotary Club of Preston. Shanice went to University High School initially but then went over to Princes Hill Secondary College which proved to be more socially accepting and allowed her to regain a sense of self worth Her very substantial community engagement included – organisation of the local Blue Light Disco frequently visiting local primary and secondary schools Cuppa with a Copper community engagement strategy in shopping centres Olivia Newton John Wellness Walk and Research Run Safety presentation for 2,000 international students at Latrobe Uni Shanice was also the Multicultural Liaison Officer working with East Preston Islamic College which included participating in camps and pursuing a personal passion of inspiring young Muslim women. Speaking Arabic was an advantage in gaining trust among young people at the school where Shanice would spend recess and lunch times engaging in conversations and answering questions. This also involved running an Islamic Leadership Program which increased aspirations of young Islamic women, which even inspired some to join the police! As she explained, this was quite a challenge, given some traditional views on the roles of young women. She took this ambition further as a L2P learner driver mentor for young Muslim women and oversaw school work experience in the police station environment. Shanice is described as humble and empathic but she clearly epitomises our Rotary value of “Service Above Self” An impressive feature of Shanice is her positive, determined and resilient personality as a daughter of Egyptian migrants. Although she came from a family of police officers (her father and grandfather were policemen in Egypt) she experienced considerable cultural barriers to her ambition to join the police force.

THE MORELANDER THE MORELANDER

Shanice raised her children for 9 years as a single parent before joining Victoria Police. Some of her values as a police officer include – Promising not to put people down, opting for a constructive and supportive approach instead Ensuring that the police uniform provides a balance of authority and respect An empathetic approach to family violence issues Involvement in the CALD programme to promote a message that family violence is wrong She is committed to recruiting people like herself and promoting trust in police from all cultural groups. Shanice is now with Moreland Police in the Proactive Policing Unit in Brunswick. Shanice’s involvement with Rotary has reconnected by joining the Moreland Youth Mental Health Forum fortnightly discussions. She made an impact at her first meeting by reporting from outside the locked down housing towers at North Melbourne. It was very clear that Shanice has a very positive view of Rotary from the mentoring she received from Rotary Club of Preston members esepcially Rotarian Elaine Price and now through a connection with Moreland Rotary. A very impressive and positive woman, making a difference in her active engagement in our community. Well done Shanice!
