A meeting of minds - sharing common Rotary values with different roadmaps Trevor Moyle invited four special guests to attend our meeting last weekto talk to us about their recently chartered Rotary Passport Club of Melbourne (RPM). Maria Hicks (President) , Madhuri Maskey (Director Australia Committee – Community) , Sue Gannon (Director Public Relations and Communications Committee) and Jenny Foster (President elect and Membership Team Leader) all presented very positively on their new Rotary experience, based on backgrounds representing a blend of traditional and forward Rotary thinking. Jenny is also International Director for Rotary District 9800. This combined community project experience in Australia and Overseas has also influenced the unique and engaging strategy that represents RPM. This is demonstrated by 28 members of the club working for NGOs her and overseas, plus some of the honorary members (partners) Mention was made of Moreland Club member Trevor Moyle being appointed an Honorary RPM Member, in recognition of a common desire to support work in Nepal and friendship with Jenny and Madhuri. It is hoped that this will provide a basis for our clubs to work together

Following on from the E Club concept, a Passport club represents a bold move by Rotary International to encourage alternative club structures that better meet the needs of members, whilst preserving the core Rotary objectives and values. We found out that RPM is Victoria’s first ever Rotary Passport Club— chartered in November last year, with the largest charter recorded in Australia in last 10 years with a foundation membership of 44

And what is Rotary Passport Melbourne? • A club that provides opportunities to connect with Rotarians and other partners locally, nationally and internationally • A club that works with members on causes they are passionate about • A unique networking collective with NGOs and charities around the world • A club that is focussed on making an impact no matter where we live The club has one formal online meeting per month which in pre Covid times was based at Rotary DIK warehouse in Footscray – which in turn was a founding inspiration for club members wanting to support needy overseas projects. The club focuses very much on project work in the seven causes adopted by Rotary International and it was decided to be very open club not be constrained by local boundaries, not international borders The team have always placed a priority need for a strong sense of camaraderie however wanted the club to be seen as a group of people of action and ensure avoidance of a “social club” model. The presentation involved a very constructive discussion and exchange of comments with Moreland members, and reinforced the value of interchanges like this. Much was learnt from the exchange with some good ideas already developed for some shared project work, such as work supported by Moreland for the two Nepal Foundations founded by Trevor. Each Moreland and RPM member were asked at the conclusion to make concluding comments which were very positive about each other. Moreland members commented on the benefit of experience of online engagement during the COVID based restrictions and could see it being part id the way the club operates in the future. So the meeting was very beneficial for the members of both clubs with much food for thought for our own clubs planning for the future.

Each of our guests spoke about their background and involvement in Rotary and how they got into RPM So what is a Rotary Passport Club? • A new model of Rotary Club, where the emphasis is on Service rather than attendance • A club that allows for work and family commitments • A club that meets online as well as face to face • A club that has members located around the world—is not limited by location
