The work of Rotary and COVID-19 In this week's Morelander we explore how some of our projects and activities have been deeply affected by the CoVID-19 pandemic. Although confronted by many barriers Rotarians have shown resilience and determination to keep a focus on delivering many valuable outcomes.

Fundraising tap turned off “One with, one without!!” rings out across the searing Bunnings forecourt on a hot Saturday in December. Or it could just as easily be under a steel grey sky in July with an icy northerly almost slicing you in half. Year round and year in and year out, community groups of all stripes cram under a smoky tent to serve sausages with or without (onions) to Bunnings clients who either need recharging after their shopping expedition or to fortify themselves before their purchasing adventure.

The uncertainty surrounding the pandemic has thrown us a huge ' challenge as it cuts off a major revenue stream and we are forced to find other ways of funding community projects. We wish for certainty again but “snapping back” is not an option and we need to think very hard about new ways of raising money We still hope that one hot December Saturday we will again be sizzling alongside our sausages. But our future cannot and must not bank on this.

International Project work in Nepal curtailed

The famous Bunnings sausage sizzle is a hit with shoppers right across Australia and many is the local sports club, cubs group or kindergarten which has found itself a valuable lifeline to buy footy boots for the kids, books or uniforms or whatever. Service clubs are there too and we at Moreland Rotary are immensely grateful for this wonderful public service given to us by Bunnings in North Coburg to raise money for community projects. Our members have by now become pretty skilled at slicing onions, sizzling sausages and refuelling a hungry public. All in a good cause. But then there was COVID. The pandemic cut right through every facet of community life forcing almost everything to a halt as we socially distanced and retreated into our private spaces to deprive the virus of the opportunity of doing its worst. The sausage sizzles (as indeed is Bunnings itself) are a casualty in this epic battle and the myriad community groups now find themselves in another struggle, that of finding the means to do their work. Rotary is no exception.

Work on the CLNF Sustainable Agriculture Education school farm project has been deferred for twelve months because of Covid Club member Trevor Moyle is the founder and chairman of SmileHigh Foundation and Community Leadership Nepal Foundation. This has involved two visits per year over the past five years of between three to seven weeks each time. In March a planned SmileHigh trip to Kathmandu with two Melbourne based Oral Facial surgeons was called off at the eleventh hour because of pending concerns over COVID. This was very disappointing for Trevor as he had committed almost twelve months preparation for an intense eight day programme with partner Kathmandu University, involving a series of lectures complemented by surgical procedures including a cleft pallet operation. The work of Rotary and COVID-19 International Project work in Nepal curtailed (continued)

Rotary Bushfire Recovery Committee plans modified and deferred

In addition all Community Oral Health programmes (see photo on cover at top left) have had to be deferred during the pandemic because of concerns of infection control and schools In the case of Community Leadership Nepal Foundation, its Sustainable Agriculture Education programme at Manechauka in Tanahun has had to be deferred from closure of schools for most of 2020 and maybe beyond In addition the construction of a Girls Hostel and Empowerment Centre at Ghyangphedi for around thirty two girls, has had to be deferred for at least six months because of the impact of Covid on construction and fundraising

The COVID pandemic restrictions have meant some of the planned bushfire recovery projects have been put on hold. Project planning continues and the Bushfire Recovery Committee meet each week, to assess projects and direct funding.

The ceremonial laying of stone and lighting of candle of the Ghyangphedi Girls Hostel and Empowerment Centre . It has had to be deferred by 6 months because of Covid

Projects requiring volunteer personnel such as land revegetation and parks and garden projects will have to wait, as will community gatherings for well-being activities and mental health programs. Rotarians from metropolitan Melbourne wanting to assist Blaze Aid and the Uniting Church fencing teams, will be marking time until stage 4 restrictions are lifted and country travel is allowed. However, some fencing work in the Upper Murray has continued through the winter months, with support from international backpackers, who have been working in challenging conditions to remove and erect boundary fences.
