Community Leadership Nepal
At our recent meeting, Moreland Rotarian Trevor Moyle updated us on a remarkable project in Nepal, the Manechauka Sustainable Agriculture Education Program, which seeks to address the critical issues in Nepal of unproductive agricultural and agribusiness practices, and harmful use of
chemicals.
The program is “aiming for productive and healthy agriculture ” in Nepal, and based on the delivery of empowerment, leadership and skills training to achieve sustainable outcomes and a model for other communities to follow.
The project has been established and managed by the Community Leadership Nepal Foundation (CLNF) which was founded by Trevor with a mission to take on projects that involve: community empowerment, inclusive community governance, and leadership development. objectives to achieve sustainable community benefits in the areas of – education, economic and business management, social and health benefits. a structure based on a partnership of separate CLNF organisations in Australia and Nepal, and in Australia of Nepali and Non Nepali Australians.
This was taken at a presentation to a group that had completed a Community Agriculture course. Note the women sitting up front Current Projects
CLNF Australia is a registered foundation with the Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission (ACNC), affiliated with Rotary Australia and provides overall strategic direction, funding and governance for CLNF Australia and CLNF Nepal. It has a board chaired by Trevor with board members drawn from a variety of people with expertise and also connected to the Nepali community in Australia and Nepal.
The Model Community Development Program at Ghyangphedi, Nuwakot supports empowerment of a marginalised community; it has an immediate focus on the education and welfare of women and girls with an objective of eliminating the cause of girl trafficking. Other objectives are in the area of economic and business improvement, education (incl Adult Literacy) health ad social outcomes.
In Nepal, CLNF Nepal is a not for profit company registered with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal. It has a very experienced board with a strong Nepal network and deep relevant specialist skills. The chair is Ujjwal Amatya, who is the country head for a European INGO called Mission East
The Model Sustainable Agriculture Education Program at Manechauka, Tanahun works with Diploma in Agriculture (Animal Science and Plant Science) programs to provide support for development of community based practical agribusiness programs and regenerative/organic agriculture education.

Community Leadership Nepal
Model Sustainable Agriculture Education Program - Manechauka, District of Tanahun
Background
The project involves providing support to students studying Diploma in Agriculture (Animal Science and Plant Science). The courses are overseen by the Shree Tribhuvan Government Secondary School and located on the school campus which includes : the high school the Agriculture Diploma courses, and a faculty providing B Ed courses for school teaching.
The 2015 earthquakes caused widespread destruction of buildings on the campus which are still being replaced. Agriculture Course Structure
The courses are: approved and governed by the Nepal Government agency CTEVT (similar to TAFE in Australia), provided over years 11, 12 and 13 in a similar manner to VCAL and TAFE courses in Australia. involve completion of high school education and the Diploma course. the objective of the courses is to allow students to either take their acquired knowledge back to their communities, or go on to take a Bachelor course in Agriculture. Agriculture Course Challenges
The problems with the Diploma in Agriculture courses at present are that they are: underfunded, take a pure science approach to learning, involve classroom rote learning in style of presentation, and are not sufficiently dealing with growing issues and opportunities with agriculture in Nepal. The key issues with Nepal agriculture include: lack of diversity in production and agriculture methods, land management, overuse of chemicals – fertilizers, weedicides and pesticides. inefficient supply chains – involving excessive profiteering by middlemen
Agriculture Course Program Objectives
A focus on sustainable agriculture, for instance with the formulation of modern land management, environmentally friendly fertilizers, weedicides and pesticides, teaching regenerative agriculture and permaculture, teaching of propagation methods and plant diversity, use of efficient supply chain marketing, and introduction of a greater content of applied agriculture Proposed CLNF changes to the Agriculture Course Program
Key components of the modified programme supported by CLNF involve: the development of an extensive school farm, divided into 11 outputs ranging from a nursery, fish and duck farming, Bee keeping, Mushrooms, Poultry, Beef, fruit, medicinal plants etc. the creation of modular courses for use with the students, and packaged for teaching by the students in their own communities. learning benefits of modern and diversified agriculture. propagation methods and new food types. efficient marketing and supply chain management , including the use of cooperatives and improvements to course materials, teaching methods and laboratory fitout CLNF Project Team

Our Christmas/Anniversary Lunch
Because of the COVID restrictions our club had to postpone a 25th anniversary lunch planned earlier in the year. This was a huge disappointment as we wanted to celebrate and showcase our achievements over the last 25 years. We are not a large club but what we lack in size, we more than make up for with our energy and enthusiasm. Because of the continuing uncertainly during the pandemic, we decided to hold an outdoor lunch and combine it with our Christmas wind up. It was a great great Rotary occasion for those who could attend being held in the wonderful gardens at the new Moreland station.
Thanks go to President Emma for organising this and for the wonderful chocolate cake she baked for the occasion. It was delicious and Emma continues to surprise us with her talents. Now onwards to the next 25 years!
A Paul Harris Fellow for Trevor Moyle
Past President Trevor Moyle has been an amazing contributor to our club. His work with the Community Leadership Nepal and SmileHigh Foundations plus his being a driving force behind Moreland's focus on youth mental health has been nothing short of incredible. Add to that his general contribution to our club and we have a very worthy recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow recognition at our club meeting last week which was presented by President Emma. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. Congratulations Trevor for all your great work for Rotary and our community!

They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are invited because they hopefully inform and stimulate our members and guests. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in. However the opinions expressed by our speakers do not necessarily reflect any official viewpoint of Moreland Rotary nor those of individual club members. Irrespective of this we always offer a warm Rotary welcome to all of our speakers.
