Sussex Neighbourhood House

Joe Cassar addressing our meeting watched on by Russell Stuckey

Recently we had the pleasure of a presentation by Joe Cassar and Campbell Rider of Sussex Neighbourhood House (SNH). Joe is the General Manager of SNH which is based in a magnificent modern, highly accessible and spacious new building at the Pascoe Vale Community Centre. Campbell is the Youth Programs Coordinator. Joe said that neighbourhood houses aim to connect local people through provision of learning and community programs such as English language, jobseeker pathways and digital literacy. SNH also has an artist in residence and runs community art programs. The neighbourhood house is funded by the Moreland City Council for training in First Aid, Asthma, Anaphylaxis, Basic Food Handling, and various other volunteer specific training and Joe said that they would be very interested in also adding Mental Health First Aid training to those with the support of Moreland Rotary. SNH also runs youth programs under the direction of Campbell and is interested in further discussion with us regarding Rotary Youth Leadership initiatives as well as connecting with the 2nd Glenroy Disabled Scout group which Moreland Rotary has supported for several years. Joe is currently developing a strategic plan for SNH and is exploring partnerships with other community organisations including Rotary hence the visit to our club. This aligns well with our focus on our local community and we look forward to further discussions and tangible outcomes over the next Rotary year.

Changeover Lunch at CERES Environmental Park

Current secretary Rosemary Freeman made a presentation to and thanked Emma on behalf of club members for her excellent work as outgoing President. Trevor thanked everyone for their support and spoke of how his inspiration to make a decision to take on a second term as President was drawn from a combination of: 1. A transforming leadership at Rotary International level, with special reference to the incoming President Jennifer Jones, who will be the first ever female to undertake the role. Jennifer has a passion for inclusion and appealing to every single Rotarian to take a challenge of action, 2. The opportunity to take on a continuing role for Emma and knowing that we have a terrific Presidential nominee in Jo Connellan. Trevor indicated that he will be working very closely with both Emma and Jo so as to provide maximum continuity, and 3. The quality team of members at Moreland who provide individual leadership that makes for a strong and high achieving club.

We gathered with fellow Rotarians, community guests, family and friends on Sunday 29 May for our annual changeover ceremony where we welcome in the new club president for the incoming year.

Trevor indicated that he wanted to focus on our strong community partnerships with adoption of valuable project initiatives. He also expressed a desire to increase public awareness of what the club does and in doing so, build its membership base.

The venue was the Merri Table at the CERES Environmental Park in East Brunswick, with an informal format and the lovely late autumn weather conditions all contributing to an enjoyable day.

Out annual report will be coming out in the next couple of weeks where both Emma and Trevor expound on these in some depth.

The changeover was earlier than usual as current President Emma Davis was heading off to the USA for the Rotary International Convention a few days later, followed by a well deserved holiday around the Central Americas. It was a great opportunity for all of us to get together socially in a delightful setting as well as review another very successful year and to welcome Trevor Moyle as our incoming club president. Our Moreland Mayor Mark Riley attended the ceremony and gave his very apt acknowledgement to country and a much appreciated welcome on behalf of Council We enjoyed lunch and then gathered in a courtyard to hold a simple but dignified outdoor changeover ceremony with Emma briefly reflecting on our year and using her Assistant Governorship to induct Trevor as incoming President for 202223. Our Guest Speakers

Moreland Rotary invites speakers to our club both from our local community and further afield. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are invited because they hopefully inform and stimulate our members and guests. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in. However the opinions expressed by our speakers do not necessarily reflect any official viewpoint of Moreland Rotary nor those of individual club members. Irrespective of this we always offer a warm Rotary welcome to all of our speakers.
