MORELAND SPONSORED ROTARY PEACE FELLOW MICHAEL CHEW ANNOUNCES EXCITING GLOBAL YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT

The project provides a wonderful opportunity for young people and relevant organisations to work with the Rotary Peace Fellowship’s new Social Change Initiative program being coordinated by current peace fellow Dr Michael Chew.

The project is an extension of Michael’s Portraits of Change actionresearch PhD work which helped young people in cities across Bangladesh, China and Australia develop photography skills to tell stories about their local environmental hopes and issues.

Michael’s vision is to connect environmentally active youth across the world, and support them to share their stories of change. He asks what if it was easy to connect with people who are changing the world for the better, instead of just seeing what is going wrong? Why not connect those greening their cities around the world, giving them the visual tools and platforms to help them gather and tell their powerful stories? These stories can then ripple out and inspire others to take action themselves.

Michael is gathering volunteers and supporters – either people or organisations - who are passionate about supporting global grassroots youth-led environmental projects, to be involved in developing in this ‘Stories for Change’ global online environmental youth leadership program in visual form.

Some of the ways of supporting the project are through: Internet research Web design Social media Video editing Supporting youth participants (as mentors) Being a youth participant (18-30yo) Translating/transcribing between languages Providing financial support Assisting with finding financial support An email subscription to the e-newsletter to stay in touch A small Core Team of dedicated volunteers is also sought to drive outreach, web and social media, and workshop program development, who can give at least a day per week. They will have access to relevant Rotary Peace Fellowship curriculum and associated networks to assist with successfully developing the program.

THE MORELANDER

Michael is a photographer who completed his PhD at Monash University Department of Design. His previous project, Portraits of Change, involved holding workshops to help young people in urban communities develop photography skills to tell stories about their local area especially on environmental issues. He also connected these overeseas youth with young people in Melbourne to help develop a mutual understanding of issues that face both communities.

Michael is also a former Rotarian who now lives in Castlemaine. His Peace Fellowship at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, which he is completing on line due to the pandemic, was supported by our club and Rotary District 9790. He is now wishing to extend his project by providing opportunities for more young people to become involved along with encouraging other individuals and organisations to invest in the program.

PROJECT MANAGER WANTED FOR THE BACKYARD FARMERS PROJECT

Moreland Rotary Club has been supporting the local community organisation Growing Farmers over the past year to establish their Backyard Farmers Project.

We have a shared vision for stronger communities and healthier environments.

During the pandemic we sometimes only meet via Zoom on Wednesday mornings from 7.30-8.30 am but, when we can, we meet in person at our usual venue (listed on page 6). You should contact us beforehand in case restrictions are in force but you can always join us on Zoom at any time and the link is below.
