Bishop J. Drew Sheard PRESIDING BISHOP & CHIEF APOSTLE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST, INC.
Our Guest Speaker Bishop John Drew Sheard was born on January 1, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan, to Bishop John Henry Sheard and Mrs. Willie Mae Gordon Sheard. He was saved at a young age under the pastorate of the late Bishop John Seth Bailey, and later acknowledged his call to the ministry under the guidance of his father. J. Drew Sheard matriculated at Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, and a Master of Education degree in Mathematics. He worked diligently in several positions in the church locally and nationally including serving as choir director, Chairman of both local and state youth departments, as National Adjutant Overseer, Executive Secretary of the International Youth Department, and in various civic capacities including Executive Director of the Michigan Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and as a board member of the Michigan Anti-Apartheid Council. In 1988, Elder J. Drew Sheard was installed as Pastor of Greater Emmanuel Church, located at 67 Sturtevant in Highland Park, Michigan. He was met by a handful of faithful followers willing to give him a chance as he commenced his ascent into Pastoral Ministry. Shortly, the church began to grow exponentially. This propelled the church to begin a building fund project which led to the purchase of 37,000 square feet of land from the city of Highland Park, where he planned to build a church and help revitalize Highland Park. However, Greater Emmanuel was denied the option to build. Apparently, God had other plans for the ministry. In May of 1992, the faithful purchased a beautiful edifice located at 16776 Southfield Road and its accompanying parsonage. It was then that Pastor Sheard renamed the church adding “institutional” signifying Greater Emmanuel’s purpose of organizing and uniting for a particular purpose – to assist in leading souls to Christ. In 1995, Bishop Herbert J. Williams, Sr., Establishmentarian and Prelate of the North Central Michigan Jurisdiction, appointed Elder J. Drew Sheard as Superintendent of the Emmanuel District. Within a short time, Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ was burgeoning with members – people were literally racing to get to church for a seat. Superintendent Sheard’s innovative and somewhat nontraditional approaches to ministry appealed to many. Known as a ministry trailblazer, Superintendent Sheard mimicked popular corporate business models for church administration, instituted specialized services such as “Holy Women in Red, Sanctified Men in Black,” and an annual leadership recognition luncheon, just to name a few. He also has hosted conferences with guest speakers that are deemed the most influential leaders in Christendom. In March of 1999 Superintendent Sheard moved the congregation to temporary housing in Bailey Cathedral located at 7045 Curtis until a building became available. While there, the membership continued to expand and in March of 2002, Greater Emmanuel moved into its present facility located at 19190 Schaefer Highway. Not satisfied with the esthetics or look of the sanctuary, he led the congregation to renovations totaling over $1,000,000. During his tenure as International Youth Department President for the Church of God in Christ, Inc., the national youth department instituted many youth programs including the formation of the “PeerSuaders,” Young Women of Excellence – “YWE,” Young Men of Valor – “YMV,” the Young Excited and Saved Club – “YES” Club, and the implementation of area rallies leading up to the annual Music & Youth –“MY” convention. It was Superintendent Sheard’s ideas that have propelled him to the forefront of both the civic and religious community and have gained him recognition as a “bridge builder” to other denominations. In 2004, Bishop Sheard received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree, and in 2007 was inducted into the prestigious Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers.
Superintendent Sheard served as the Vice-Chairman of the Church of God in Christ, Inc.’s International Auxiliaries In Ministries convention, and in 2008 was appointed Chairman. In this role, he founded the C. D. Owens Scholarship that assisted gifted and aspiring students entering college with financial assistance. While Chairman of the “AIM” Convention, he helped boost that convention’s attendance and fiscal accountability. In 2009, Superintendent Sheard and his wife, Karen Clark-Sheard, founded Karew Records, a faith-based record label focusing on various forms of Gospel, Christian and Inspirational music. In January 2010, Bishop Herbert J. Williams, Sr., the founding prelate of North Central Michigan Jurisdiction, with support of Presiding Bishop Charles Blake, the General Board, and his family, announced his plan to answer the call of God to “step aside and let the young man pass,” after nearly 35 years as the jurisdictional prelate. The Presiding Bishop and General Board accepted the nomination of Superintendent J. Drew Sheard as his successor. In April 2010, the Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. and Presidium of the Church of God in Christ, Inc. recommended to members of the General Assembly, the elevation of Superintendent J. Drew Sheard to the Office of Jurisdictional Bishop of the Michigan North Central Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction and the General Assembly did approve his elevation to the respective Office as prescribed by our Constitution. On August 29, 2010, Superintendent J. Drew Sheard was consecrated to the Office of Jurisdictional Prelate of the Michigan North Central Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, at Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ in Detroit, Michigan. Under the leadership of Bishop Sheard, the Jurisdiction has established an insurance program available to leaders within the jurisdiction, established a new Auxiliaries in Ministry concept, one convention in three locations with a goal of touching the entire jurisdiction. He also established a retirement program that ensures the establishmentarian, Bishop H. J. Williams, was financially secure for life. In November 2012, Bishop Sheard was elected to the General Board of the Church of God in Christ, Inc. with the most votes ever for a newcomer vying for a seat on the board. In November 2016 he was reelected to the General Board. In 2021, the delegates of the General Assembly reelected Bishop Sheard as a member of the Presidium of the Church of God in Christ, Inc., and subsequently elected him to the Office of the Presiding Bishop as Chief Apostle. Bishop Sheard’s accomplishments, coupled with his abundant love and unfeigned devotion to God and the church, instills within those who follow him the confidence that he is a leader capable of taking them to the next level of Ministry. Bishop Sheard is married to Evangelist Karen Clark Sheard and has two children, Kierra Valencia and J. Drew, II. He is the proud grandfather of two, Jacob and Kali.
