CHRISTMAS MAGIC in Dresden and the Elbland region Anyone who likes Christmas will love Dresden. A full nine Christmas markets on different themes make the metropolis on the Elbe a true Christmas city. Christmas in Dresden also means festive church concerts, fairy tale performances and special exhibitions. Or how about a night lights cruise on the Elbe? DRESDEN STRIEZELMARKT Calendar and events

In the heart of Dresden’s historical Altstadt or Old Town, a unique Christmas atmosphere awaits you at the famous “Dresden Striezelmarkt”. Dresden’s biggest Christmas market is known not just for the glitter and sparkle; in its 588th year, it is also the oldest market of its kind in Germany. With wooden decorations from the Ore Mountains, woad-dyed fabrics from Lusatia, Christmas stars from Herrnhut or Original Dresdner Christstollen, the busy stalls have a festive focus on Saxon art and crafts.

DRESDEN STRIEZELMARKT Christmas souvenirs

2022 Striezelmarkt mug The ceramic mugs sold in a different design every year are a popular Striezelmarkt souvenir. The 2022 special edition is limited to 588 mugs. Each year’s collectors’ mugs are unique – decorated by hand with a different motif every time around. As well as the Special Edition, every year a standard design and a children’s mug are specially created and regionally produced for sale at the market.

2022 Striezeltaler tokens The silvery Striezeltaler tokens can be used as an official means of payment at Dresdner Striezelmarkt. The coins have come with a new design every year since 2014. When you buy ten tokens, you get one more free of charge. And if you have any tokens from previous years, you are of course welcome to use them at this year’s market.

Information and service The Dresden Information office welcomes Dresden’s Christmas visitors in a cosy pavilion on the Striezelmarkt itself. Its well-informed staff answer questions about your stay in Dresden. As well as the Striezeltaler and mugs, there are various lovely Dresden-themed articles. The same services are provided by the Dresden Information offices at the main station, or in the QF Passage arcade, which also houses the Frauenkirche stollen market. This little Yuletide market has genuine Dresdner Christstollen made by selected bakers to try and buy, plus information about how stollen is made. The range is rounded off by decorative stollen serving boards, stollen knives and Dresden mulled wine. CHRISTMAS GARDEN A fairy-tale winter world in Pillnitz When Dresden’s famous Pillnitz Palace and grounds are lit by a twinkling trail of evening lights, it’s finally the most wonderful time of the year. A new route on the winter walk features different illuminations to surprise even those visitors who have walked the trail in previous years. Take your loved ones and discover a wintry oasis in an evocative, romantic atmosphere full of glittering illuminations that transport you into a unique, magical Christmas world. Since it first opened in 2018, Christmas Garden Dresden has become one of the most popular destinations at Christmas. KÖNIGSTEIN FORTRESS An Advent market 247 metres above the Elbe It is one of the most spectacular spots in Germany for a Christmas market: the table-topped hill of Königstein with its famous fortress, not far from Dresden in Saxon Switzerland. On the Advent weekends, this ancient monument is the traditional site of a picturesque historical Christmas market. Even the sales stands are something special, built on the spot out of wooden slats and strips of fabric. All the traders wear historical costume. Goulash soup and the fortress’s special punch bubble in big copper pots over open fires. The animals in the nativity scene are real. The stage show celebrates traditional, hand-made artistry with folklore and entertainers. In the garrison church, Advent organ music plays. The huge hilltop fortress is as popular among day-trippers and photographers in winter as it is in summer.

HOFLÖSSNITZ WINE ESTATE Saxony’s vinicultural landscape Once the prince electors’ winery and the Wettin dynasty’s rural retreat, the estate was taken over by the Hoflössnitz Foundation in 1998. The manor is home to Saxony’s only museum of winemaking and the Saxon Wine Route visitor and information centre. In the historical ballroom, which is also used for weddings, chamber concerts regularly take place during the summer months, and the old wine press building holds a modern function room for celebrations and conferences. The surrounding vineyards are cultivated by Weingut Hoflössnitz GmbH following the principles of certified organic farming. The vinothèque offers guests a wide range of wines and sparkling wines from Hoflössnitz and other producers from the Saxon wine-growing region. On the fourth Advent weekend, the wine terrace makes an inviting spot for a cosy little Christmas market. ROMANTIC GÖRLITZ in winter and at Christmas Görlitz gives off great vibes all year round – including the winter. The romantic Altstadt or Old Town is the perfect place to drink in the atmosphere of peaceful reflection. Magnificent Renaissance and baroque merchants’ properties form the setting for the Silesian Christmas Market with its regional specialities and traditional handi crafts. PANOMETER 360° journey through Dresden’s past Don’t fancy strolling around Dresden’s Altstadt district when it’s cold or sleet is falling? The work of art was based on the vedute or “views” of mid-18th-century Dresden painted by Bernardo Bellotto (known as Canaletto after his uncle), which provide an insight into those magnificent times. Hire binoculars to discover the tiny details of this impressive panorama. The show is accompanied by an exhibition, fitting background music and a change from day to night. Round off your visit with a cup of coffee and slice of cake at the Panometer café.
