SINCE I WAS NINE YEARS OLD -- REARRANGING MY MUSIC ROOM SO THAT I COULD MAINTAIN THE BEST SOUND POSSIBLE WITH NO LOSS OF CONVENIENCE REGARDING MY PROXIMITY TO EACH INSTRUMENT ON THE WALL -- I HAVE ALWAYS DESIGNED FOR HUMAN EXPERIENCE. IDEALS OF LIGHT, SOUND, SURROUNDING, AND USER EXPERIENCE AT NO LOSS OF FUNCTIONALITY STILL DETERMINE MY DECISIONS WHEN DESIGNING TODAY, AND HOLD TRUE IN EVERYTHING I DO. I DESIGN WITH THE USER IN MIND.

THE LAYERS OF TREES ON THE SITE PROVIDE CHANGING LIGHT AND EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THE LOUVERED SCREENS PROVIDE THAT SAME DYNAMIC LIGHT. THE PANELS ALSO MAKE THE SPACE ITSELF DYNAMIC, AS THEY CAN BE MOVED USING LIFT-AND-SLIDE TECHNOLOGY TO ALLOW MANY PEOPLE TO ENTER AND EXIT, A FEW TO WANDER THROUGHOUT THE DAY, OR FOR COMPLETE PRIVACY.

THE ROSE PAVILION IS ALSO ADAPTABLE BY THE USER. USING HYDRAULIC MECHANICS, THE USER CAN CREATE AN ENTRANCE RAMP, STAGES SURROUNDING THE STRUCTURE, OR AN ENCLOSED SANCTUARY.

THE PETALS OF THE PAVILION FORM A RECOGNIZABLE ICON WHILE ABSTRACTING THE WAY IN WHICH HUMANS INTERACT WITH NATURE. IN THIS CASE, OUR ROLE AS HUMANS IS TO ACT AS BEES TO A FLOWER, TAKING ONLY WHAT WE NEED FROM THE BUILDING (SANCTUARY); A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIP FOR HUMAN AND BUILDING.
