Every feature of the building, from the materials to the form to the light trickling through its louvers defers the viewer’s mind back to the historic and beautiful site on which it is built.

ONE BAY OPENING: THE OPENING OF ONE BAY ON THE SOUTH AND EAST WALLS ALLOWS FOR THE CIRCULATION OF INDIVIDUALS THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF AN EVENT. THIS CIRCUMSTANCE MAY BE USED FOR GALLERIES AND ART SHOWINGS IN THE CLUB HOUSE. THE OPENINGS ALSO ALLOW FOR CROSS-VENTILATION AND MORE EXPLORATION OF PATH AND PLACE.
CLOSED CONDITION: IN CASES OF INCLIMATE WEATHER, COLD CLIMATE, OR PRIVATE EVENTS, THE CLUB HOUSE AND BUILDING ENVELOPE CAN BE CLOSED OFF. CIRCULATION IN THIS CASE IS DESTINATION BASED AND DIRECT. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR INTERPRETATION.
MOST PUBLIC CONDITION: IN THE MOST PUBLIC CONDITION, TWO BAYS ON BOTH SOUTH AND EAST WALLS ARE OPENED. THIS CASE IS DIRECTED TOWARD LARGE-SCALE MIGRATIONS OF PEOPLE AT A SPECIFIC TIME. EVENTS SUCH AS CONCERTS, TOWN MEETINGS, AND YOUTH CLASSES ARE BEST SERVED BY THIS LAYOUT. THIS CONDITION ALLOWS FOR THE MOST AMBIGUOUS TRANSITION BETWEEN INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACE.
THE APPROACH TO THE BUILDING REINFORCES ITS DEFERENCE TO THE LANDSCAPE. THE BUILDING FIRST APPEARS AS ABSTRACT ROCK FORMS, JUST AS ONE WOULD SEE IN THE LANDSCAPE. IT IS ONLY WHEN INSIDE THE BUILDING THAT THE USER UNDERSTANDS THE ROCK FORMS PROVIDE LIGHT BELOW
THE CONFERENCE ROOM, AN INHERENTLY MORE PRIVATE SPACE THAN THE CLUBHOUSE, MAINTAINS PRIVACY THROUGH A LOW OPAQUE WALL, TOPPED BY A SHOJI SCREEN. THE CONFERENCE ROOM ALLOWS NATURAL DIFFUSED LIGHT THROUGH A REVEAL IN THE ROOF

CONCRETE PIPE HOME 2018
Pipes are oriented for use/privacy needs. Convertible living spaces with ample light and views. Designed in collaboration with Vy Nguyen, a student from The University of Texas at Arlington. Visuals by Drew Morrison.
Interiors maintain privacy through curtains on either side of the connecting hall / “living room”. The smaller spaces of the bathroom and the bed/kitchen/dining are revealed by the spacious hall / “living room” and the roof deck above the bathroom
IMMIGRATION RESOURCE CE MAVERICK, EAST BOSTON 2018 The Maverick neighborhood is residential and closed off, but provides glimpses into its spirit through numerous community gardens. In a similar way, the services provided by the immigration center need to be kept private, but a glimpse of its inner spirit (culture) is given through its entrance opening.

THE CHANNEL GLASS ALLOWS THE CENTER TO BE A DIFFUSED COUNTERPART TO THE EXISTING MUSEUM DURING THE DAY, WHILE BECOMING A GLOWING BEACON ACROSS THE BOSTON HARBOR AT NIGHT. THIS CHANGE IN MATERIALITY SIGNALS THE PASSAGE OF TIME AND THE POSSIBILITY OF NEW EXPERIENCES
THE ORGANIC FORMS OF THE FACADE OPENING WELCOMES THE USER FROM THE STREET TO COME IN AND SHARE IN CULTURAL EXCHANGE
THESE ORGANIC FORMS ARE SEEN AGAIN IN THE ATRIUM, GIVING THE USER THE VISUAL TRANSPARENCY NEEDED TO NAVIGATE THE CENTER
THE PASSAGE OF TIME IS FELT FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CENTER, DUE TO ITS CLEAR GLASS OCULUS. THE REST OF THE INTERIOR IS WASHED IN A GLOW OF LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE DAY

UNIVERSAL SEATING PUBLIC LIBRARY INSTALLATION PROPOSAL 2018
THIS MODULAR SEATING IS A SOLUTION TO A LACK OF COMFORTABLE CONDITIONS FOR CHILDREN TO SHARE SPACE WITH THEIR OLDER PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS. HERE, CHILDREN ARE ENCOURAGED TO CREATE WORLDS BY REARRANGING AND MANIPULATING THE OBJECTS AROUND THEM -- LIKE THEY DO WITH COUCH CUSHIONS AT HOME.
FRONT FRONT MY CHILDREN’S LIBRARY INCLUDES ACCOMMODATION FOR ALL AGES, WHILE ENCOURAGING LEARNING AND PLAY THROUGH ITS MANY STORAGE COMPARTMENTS AND CUSTOMIZATION

FISCHER AVE ROW HOUSE MISSION HILL, MA 2017 Spaces and light are created in the shifting of modular blocks on this steep slope. Even the spaces buried deepest in the hill get access to natural light. The public streetfront is activated by a bike shop, while the more private services have access to nature via a backyard.
SITE
FISCHER AVE, MISSION HILL, ROXBURY MA
SHIFTING THE RECTANGULAR VOLUMES OF THE HOUSE IN PLAN ALLOWS OPPORTUNITIES FOR LIGHT TO NATURALLY FALL INTO THE SPACE THROUGHOUT THE DAY, LIGHTING EVEN WHAT IS BURIED DEEP IN THE EARTH.
FRAMING MODEL SHOWING THE PLAY BETWEEN STEEL AND WOOD
THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING THAT FACES THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS A COMMON GABLE SHAPE. THE SHIFTING FORMS ARE KEPT PRIVATE TO PREVENT THEM FROM DISRUPTING THE FORM LANGUAGE OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD
LIGHT TRICKLES IN FROM THE SKYLIGHT FORMED DURING THE SHIFT
THE MOST DRAMATIC SHIFT IN FORM IS LEFT FOR THE MOST CREATIVE SPACE: THE ARTIST’S STUDIO
LATTICE PAVILIONS WILBRAHAM & MONSON ACADEMY 2016 These pavilions are designed to be adapted by the user to fit varying degrees of privacy. Much like the ever-changing form of the pavilions, the light that filters through the lattice structures is dynamic.
USING HYDRAULIC MECHANICS, THE USER CAN CREATE AN ENTRANCE RAMP, STAGES SURROUNDING THE STRUCTURE, OR AN ENCLOSED SANCTUARY. THE PETALS OF THE PAVILION FORM A RECOGNIZABLE ICON WHILE ABSTRACTING THE WAY IN WHICH HUMANS INTERACT WITH NATURE. OUR ROLE AS HUMANS IS TO ACT AS BEES TO A FLOWER, TAKING ONLY WHAT WE NEED FROM THE BUILDING (SANCTUARY); A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIP FOR HUMAN AND BUILDING
IN THE LATTICE CUBE, THE USER CAN PIVOT THE STRUCTURE TO CREATE ZONES OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, ENCOURAGE INTERACTIONS, OR PROVIDE SHADE FOR A GROUP.
