Th i s p ro j e c t s e e k s to b re a k d ow n the idealized singl e famil y home into its most basic components h e a r t h , t h re s h o l d , s tr u c t u re , e n c l o s u r e , u t i l i t y. T h e s e c o m p o n e n t s a r e initiall y anal yzed and defined in two case s tudies, and later used to d eve l o p a n i n ter ve n t i o n wi t h i n t h e c o n t e x t o f S t L o u i s ’ G r a n d C e n t e r. Re c ognizing the need for an integrative design approach toward permanent interventions, t h e ‘ f o l d ’ i s a d a p t e d a s a s e a t i n g s tr a t e g y. B y developing a s ys tem of materia l applications t h a t w o ul d a l l ow f o r e a s e of tr a n s i t i o n , i t a c h i eve s a g ra d i e n t b et we e n th e u r b a n e nv i ro n m e n t to th e E a s t and th e re s t of th e p a r k . This landscape acts as a connective tissue for these disparate typologies, taking into a c c o u n t a c c e s s i b i l i t y f r o m p u b l i c tr a n s p o r t a t i o n a n d b u r g e o n i n g i n f r a s tr u c t u re t o t h e

In siting an intervention a long the Ch ain of Rocks Route 66 Bridge, the Illinois bank of the Mississippi River a llows for multipl e sca l es of observation - the immediate conditions of th e wa ter ’s e d g e , a s we l l a s th e monumental bluffs to the North of the site. The interaction of sand and water on the site served as both a p ro g ra m m a t i c m a ter i a l s t u d y a s we l l a s

t h e s o u r c e of a s tr u c t u r a l f r a m e w o r k for the forma l intervention itself.

Th e i n i t i a l p h a s e s of th i s p ro j e c t re l i e d o n an under s t a n d i n g of c o n tr o l l e d e n v i r o n m e n t s i n o r d e r t o c re ate a self-contained s ys tem specific to the plant. The “ N er ve pl an t � e co - un i t i s m a de u p of th re e pl an t i n g spaces, linked by ch annels th at filter the heat given o f f b y t h e t w o l o we r p l a n t s i n t o t h e u p p e r c h a m b e r. The mos t ch a ll enging aspect of the site is its narrow dimension as the lot of a former townhome. In order to m a xi m i ze th e l ot ’s p ote n t i a l for an u r b an g re e n h ou s e, a s er i e s of s e c t i o n a l m eta l l ou ver s re f l e c t l i g h t d ow n i n t o t h e n a r r o w s p a c e . I n s pi re d by the conventional components of a wall framing s ys tem, the modul e a llows for multipl e configurations of linear and planar el ements, which when a g g re g a te d , a l l ow f o r s t u d i e s of l i g h t , s h a d ow, a n d s tr u c t u r a l i n t e g r i t y. M o v i n g t o t h e s i t e , t h i s logic is applied to the landscape of an exis ting pla ygriound in a thriving Saint Louis neighborh o o d . C o n d u c i ve t o n i g h tt i m e e n te r ta i n m e n t , a n d famil y-friendl y programming, the intervention
