Using matieria ls coll ected from th e s i te, I b e g an to ex pl ore th e re l a t i o n s h i p b et we e n th e “ n a t u ra l environment ” exis ting on the lot in c o n tr a s t t o t h e d ete r i o r a t i n g urban fabric to which it belonged. Understanding the most b a s i c n a t u ra l e l e m e n t s wi t h i n t h e materia l context and how the y m i g h t b e re a p pl i e d to th e s i te i n a p r o d u c t i v e w a y, I s i t e d a n d designed a garden workstation th at would orient visitors on the l o t i n a f a m i l i a r w a y, b u t w o u l d cl earl y denote a shift in the built environment of the We l l s t o n L o o p .

I n s pi re d b y t h e tr a d i t i o n a l c o m p o n e n t s of a w a l l f r a m i n g s ys te m , I c re a te d m ul t i pl e co n f i g u ra t i o n s of l i n e a r and pl an a r p a r t s , w h i c h t h e n a g g re g a te d a n d a l l owe d f o r s t u d i e s of l i g h t , s h a d ow, a n d s tr u c t u r a l c a p a b i l i t i e s . M o v i n g t o t h e s i te , t h i s l o g i c w a s a p p l i e d t o the landscape of an exis ting pla yground in a thriving St. Louis neighb o r h o o d c o n d u c i ve t o n i g h tt i m e e n te r ta i n m e n t a n d f a m i l y - f r i e n d l y programming. It was important for this intervention to improve the 24-hour usability of the space.
Th e p ro j e c t a d d re ss e d th e n e e d for a m ore p ro g ra m m e d gathering space by incorporating a n a m p h i t h e a tre , re s tr o o m s , a n d a s m a l l a d m i n i s tr a t i v e c o m p l e x . Th e d i re c t i o n a l i t y of i t s g e o m etr y s e r v e d a s a l i n k b et we e n th e t wo d i s p a ra te z o n e s on either block - one compl etel y re s i de n t i a l and th e oth er a l m o s t e n t i re l y de d i c a te d to l a te n i g h t entertainment. Th e re or g an i z a t i o n of th e corner lot also served to give the site an identity separate from th e a l re a d y s u cce ss f ul Co n cord i a S e m i n a r y p a r k a c r o s s t h e s tre et , a much larger project th at was a l re a d y d ra wi n g re s i d e n t s a w a y f ro m th i s under u t il i ze d g re e n space.
The linearity of the design is emph asized by bands of ing r o u n d l i g h t i n n g s tret c h i n g across the corner lot from o n e s tre et t o t h e n e x t , i n viting passersby to take the m o s t d i re c t p a th f ro m th e re s i de n t i a l n e i g h b or h o o d around the block to the livel y s tr i p of re s t a u r a n t s a n d coffeehouses along Demun Ave . Maintaining its original c h a ra c ter a s a re c re a t i o n a l g r e e n s p a c e b y d a y, t h e s i t e n ow a c c o m o d a te s n i g h tt i m e c o n c er t s i n a we l l - l i t a m p h i t h e a tre a n d s e r v e s a s a general gathering space for th e youn g er re s i de n t s w h o inh abit mos t of the Demun neighborhood.

The mos t ch a ll enging aspect of the site was its narrow dimension as the lot of a former row house. In order to maximize the lot ’s potentia l for an urban g re e n h ou s e, I s t u d i e d th e p ro p or t i o n s of oth er fa c a de s a l o n g th e b l o c k , and e x tr u d e d a s y s te m of s e c t i o n a l l o u v e r s t h a t c o u l d d i re c t l i g h t a n d s h a d e d ow n i n t o t h e n a r r o w s p a c e , t h r o u g h t h e g l a s s r o o f . A d d i t i o n a l l y, t h e r o o f l i n e w a s designed to ch annel water via those louvers to the back of the lot and into a re s e r v o i r a c c e s s i b l e f r o m t h e l owe s t l e v e l of t h e s tr u c t u re t h a t c o u l d f a c i l i ta te g row th a nd s t u d y of a q u a t i c a nd s h a d e - d we l l i n g s p e c i e s .

This project began as a materia l s tudy a long the banks of the Mississippi River at the h i s tor i c C h a i n of Ro c k s g e o l o g i c a l fe a t u re. H e re , I e x p l o re d t h e s tr u c t u r a l p r o p e r t i e s of s a n d , a n d i t s p re s e n c e o n t h e s i te a t a wi d e range of scal es. Unders tanding the beh avior of sand as a moldabl e subs tance when comb i n e d wi t h w a t e r, I d i d a s e r i e s c a s t i n g s a n d i n a v a r i et y of g e o m etr i c f o r m s . I t h e n s et ou t to de s i g n a s p a ce th a t woul d b oth re f l e c t th i s p a ra d oxi c a l re l a t i o n s h i p and b e co nd u cive to s tudying it further in this context.
T h e f i n a l s tr u c t u re c o n s i s t s of t w o m a i n s p a c e s re l a t i n g to th e s and ’s b e h av i or a round th e Ch ain of Rocks bridge. Above, the observatory living space a llows for s tudy at the macro s c a l e , a s t h e s e d i m e n t i n tera c t s wi t h t h e f l ow o f t h e r i v e r, g i v i n g i t i t s f o r m . B e l o w, t h e l a b oratory work space beneath the bridge allows for observation at the sca l e of a singl e s e c t i o n of th e r i ver b a n k over t i m e , a s we l l a s continued study and coll ection.
