Selected Works 2009-2018 Covers a wide range of disciplines from: -Academia and theoretical works to; -Creative consulation and research to; -Professional work including landscape architecture, architecture and public artwork. At odds with invariability, Andrew enjoys exploring all facets of design within the built environment. He seeks to continuously blur the lines between landscape, architecture, interior design, and art – to collaborate with creatives from all disciplines to create unique and site-specific outcomes – to learn from other disciplines about approach, research, material and methodology – and perhaps most importantly to educate clients and the public about the importance of cross pollinated design. “I think it’s not enough to just express oneself in art today. Art as self-expression has been already over exp;loited by former generations. I think we’re heading for a different type of art, not where artists convey their own narratives, experiences and ideas within one’s closed shell. I think of self more like a filter, or a catalyst of one’s own experiences, a platform for expression. Self is no longer a theme, not even necessarily an individual. We can work in a group, with people from entirely different fields. I see it happening everywhere, it changes the very core of art making.” -Kohei Nawa, Gadabout Magazine 2014 Cities, people, artwork, nature are all wonderfully complex – why approach design with a singular overarching vision? Andrew’s professional life thus far has taught him one thing for better or worse: the motif is there is no motif. Embrace the chaos and design something special that can withstand the storm.

Athens Civic Townscape 2009 - Academic - Urban Design Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

Civic design should take advantage of a citizen’s range of vision and extend the citizen’s experience by activating certain areas of space. Key geometries form by locating entry points from both the perimeter of the block and within the block’s interior. This site anatomy is revealed in a web of interesting forms that both locate and inform the skeleton of the design.

Bio-Remediation

2010 - Academic - Conceptual Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

Exploring the future of development: “Hazardous waste riddles the landscape as the progression of man becomes blinded by the desire for industrial and economic growth. As pollutants and disease spread like the chemical fires that dominate the landscape, humans are forced to enter a new era in the history of mankind...remediation. Research has shown that mycelium has the ability to breakdown hydrocarbons and transform them into carbohydrates. Laconically speaking, this process holds the ablity to take a pile of oil saturated soil, infuse it with the mycelium spores which quickly breakdown the pollutants, and eventually spawn mushrooms. Furthermore, insects are soon attracted and lay eggs which in return hatch, bringing birds to feed and carry in seeds, eventually creating a habitat out of once toxic waste. As the processes of bioremediation restore the natural habitat, man begins to plan development. Development begins by focusing on the areas where nature has decided least significant. Here, man is able to develop and plan for the best interests of not only themselves but also the surrounding environment. In order to connect these pockets of dense human infrastructure they use the ecological developmental approach provided by the physarum polycephalum (slime mold transit) experiment. Acting as a guide this experiment provides the routes of least resistance and ensures efficiency. Connected by efficient rail systems that respond to user input, the transit network is continuosly evolving.

Veterans Memorial

2010 - Academic - Memorial Design Autocad - Sketchup - Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

Large angular sculptures erupt from the landscape to represent the brute force of conflict. These sculptures shape the space in an irregular pattern in order to provide several paths and views both into and out of the space. This interpretation of irregular space is an attempt to allow for expansion, inclusion, and equity. This creates a tension of space and a representation of the continuously evolving vigors of conflict. Two large sunken water features anchor each space and are connected by a water rill that runs under the path. The features are meant to represent the tranquility and equality that is eventually met through disaccord.

Urban Frame Network 2010 - Academic - Conceptual Adobe Illustrator

The UFN is a multi-faceted interactive platform that serves the environmental, economic, and social needs of a municipality or community. Through integrated and interactive media the UFN connects citizens via computer, mobile device, or specific UFN stations. It’s aim is to explore and expose site specific urban fabric thus allowing the revelation and awareness of locality within the greater context of the urban environment. Empower people to uncover, visualize, and collectively share information about their own communities and cities. For an in depth look at Urban Frame Network please copy and paste the following link into your browser: http://cargocollective.com/andrewfurmanski/urbanframe-network

Man, Machine, Marine

2011 - Academic - Undergraduate Thesis Autocad - Sketchup - Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

The goal of this senior project was to approach design in an extremely creative, innovative, and cutting edge fashion while respecting the historic character and use of the site. Key fractal geometries allow not only interesting form but increase the site’s permeability. Preservation of historic buildings and implementation of fractal design geometries offer an energizing and intriguing conflict of forces. It is this tension and energy between old/new, formal/ informal that allows for the site to be a successful addition to the San Francisco Bay coastline. The Hidden City

2011 - Professional - Landscape Design - Built Sketchup - Adobe Photoshop

The hidden city was a reappropriation project completed by Ecoland Planning and Design before my time at the firm. Located in the Chao Yang District of Beijing, the project has been lauded for it’s respect of the historical character and use of the previously industrial site. My involvement with this project was simply to take an existing model and create form renderings to show the function of space. Major model corrections, the cleansing of lines, and a newly restricted palette allowed me to properly show the funtionality and form of the neo-industrial chic spaces. With the understanding that these renderings would be used for an ASLA award submission I took it upon myself to quickly produce renderings that both myself and my peers would be thrilled to submit. Teen Dream

Often times during my stay in Beijing work was quick to pick up again at the end of projects, however at one point the interns experienced a decent lull in work. Bored and looking to sharpen our skills in several different programs we arranged an intrastudio design competition : the best house. Inspired by not only my dream to own a house on the water but also by my Baltimore band of choice (Beach House) I quickly created and rendered my idea of an ideal beach home. Simple, functional, and stylish this house is aptly named after the 2010 Beach House album “Teen Dream

Wanda Qingdao

2014 - Professional - Landscape Design Autocad - Adobe Illustrator - Sketchup - Renderings

In 2012 the Dalian Wanda Group announced that it had struck a deal to buy the American cinema chain AMC Entertainment Holdings. At the time this piece of news seemed inconsequential to my immediate life. Little did I know that two years later the Wanda Development Group approached us with a project that I never could have imagined possible, “Movie Metropolis: a new entertainment district, a new island off the coast of Qingdao, recreational facilites, hotels, resorts, apartments, parks, and much much more - all in all, an entire new city district of Qingdao built to rival the prestige and entertainment capabilities of Hollywood. Needless to say there have been thousands of people working on this project to make it a reality. My role in this project varied. For the resorts and commercial developments I was in charge of cultural elements, design and communication. For the waterfront and marina club I was conceptualizing with the team, designing, and creating pieces that would eventually become part of the final design. DNA - Design & Art

2015 - Professional - Design Consult/Interiors - Built Autocad - Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator - Sketchup

Conceptualized over several years in conversations with my former director, Kevin Wang of IMG3, DNA Design & Art space officially opened in August of 2015. Now, a new creative cafe, florist, bookstore, gallery and cowork space exists where there was once a restaurant. For the last half of 2014 I had been working with several other members of our team to create this new creative space in the Cool Docks area of Shanghai. Spacial planning, interior design, signage, visual identity, business conceptualizing, client relations and management were just a few of the responsibilities and duties that I held. Emergence

2017 - Professional - Architecture - Built Autocad - Sketchup - Rhinoceros

Situated on the coastline of China’s Yellow Sea, SIIC Center – Qingdao Beer City is home to the world’s second largest International Beer Festival. UAP Associate, Andrew Furmanski, led the Shanghai Art + Design team on the design, fabrication and installation of Emergence, a curved, brass entry canopy for this landmark civic development. Often times in architectural projects with curves or grand gestures you see designs that stress material in unflattering ways - either through poor detailing, poor understanding of the material strengths/weaknesses, or poor craftsmanship the finished design lacks clarity in line and form. The benefit of working with UAP is that all of those potential points of stress in the final product are addressed throughout design, fabrication and installation. Starting with the bones of the work – the painted Q235B steel structure is an accomplishment of engineering. Measuring only .6 x 1M at the base, the canopy expands to an 8 x 19M soffit, revealing dramatic arches and a generous architectural space. Standing at over 14m tall, the canopy emerges from the ground plane and soars above pedestrians, honouring the vision of the development by reflecting the city’s growth. With over 850 brass panels held in place by a clever and impossibly simple stud and bracket substructure, the canopy’s surface is perforated by internal lighting, creating the illusion of shimmering lights on the water’s surface at night.
