Plan a day visit or an overnight stay in the cabins at the Hualapai Ranch or the Hualapai Lodge on Historic Route 66. Spread over 9000 acres of the Grand Canyon’s West Rim, Grand Canyon West is the only place in the Canyon where you can access a boat ride on the Colorado River via helicopter and is home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass walkway 4000 feet above the canyon floor. Those Were The Days Special to DRIVE by Barbara J. Nosek

A

nd both longtime residents and longtime visitors cast fond backward glances at those days, at “Vegas as it used to be.” Whether sharply accurate or burnished by the passage of time, those golden memories preserve the spirit of Las Vegas PC, or Pre-Corporation. Never mind that those conglomerates have brought to town a bounty of fine restaurants, diverse entertainment and first class shopping. The nostalgic crowd still misses what isn’t here anymore: first name basis execs, parking lots, cheap or even free buffets, liberal comps, liberal markers, cigarettes on the gaming tables, the occasional showroom star dealing at those tables, glamorously garbed nightfolks, the “colorful” characters that ran the places, and on a related note: hmmm, very few casino robberies. While much of that is surely relegated to the pages of Las Vegas lore, some vestiges just as surely remain. The town’s unique history can be revisited at the Mob Museum, at the Nevada State Museum in Springs Preserve, and in countless library books. And, even better, relived in these ever-popular and still standing “Old Vegas” restaurants . . .

Born over 30 years ago at Barbary Coast [then Bill’s, next tba], this upscale dining room followed its creator Michael Gaughan to his new South Point in 2005. And here is the valley’s pioneer in Japanese restaurants, opening its doors in 1967 on west Sahara [today another on S. Eastern]. And it didn’t hold back, using from the git-go traditional cooking styles plus thenexotic ingredients. Its appeal and success is measured in both longevity and awards, both locally and from the native land. 702.876.4988 osakajapanesebistro.com
