Winning At Poker Poker Malapropisms Skilled poker players are adept at buffing. This sentence has a Poker Malapropism: an incorrect word used for one similar in pronunciation but different in meaning – often with humorous overtones.
T
he word “malapropism” originated from the character, Mrs. Malaprop, in Richard Sheridan’s play, "The Rivals". Example: “(H)er affluence over her niece was very small.” In Mark Twain’s novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, Aunt Sally used a malapropism: “I was most putrified with astonishment.” Better: petrified. Examples from well-known people: President George W. Bush: “We cannot let terrorists . . . hold this nation hostile . . .” Comedian Norm Crosby is considered the Master of Malapropisms. My favorite: “This is unparalyzed in the state’s history.” In the 1970’s TV show “All in the Family,” Archie Bunker used malapropisms so frequently that some people labeled them, “Archie Bunkerby George “The Engineer” Epstein isms.” For example: “Patience is a virgin.” Poker Malapropisms. . . “He was a lose player.” – Note: Loose players usually do lose. “He won the pot with truces-full.” “The pot odds were higher than the card odds; he had a Positive Expiration.” “The game was Texas haul’em.” “She decided to make a big rise on the flop.” “He lifted up his thumb, announcing: ‘I boast it up!’” “He glanced at his hole cards and shoveled all-in.” Your turn. Suggest a few new Poker Malapropisms. Share them with your poker baddies. Start a new – fun-fooled – fad. . . VEGAS ANYWHERE

WALK
THE SKY
Grand Canyon West's Skywalk One Reason to Visit Grand Canyon West
E
xperience one of the seven natural wonders of the world, from the most unique portion of the Grand Canyon, and be mesmerized! At Grand Canyon West you can see the Canyon from 4,000 feet above the Colorado River and Canyon floor on the “glass bridge” Skywalk, or on the only one day white water rafting trip on the Colorado with Hualapai River Runners, leaving daily from the Hualapai Lodge, in Peach Springs Arizona. At Grand Canyon West, you can take a helicopter to the bottom of the canyon for a short pontoon boat ride and see a view only found on the western rim, or panoramic views from Guano and Eagle Points showcasing the natural beauty found only in this region. For the western in all of us, visit the Hualapai Ranch that sits just feet away from the edge of the Grand Canyon, and minutes from the Skywalk, where you can enjoy BBQ, horseback rides around the canyon, horseshoes, bow and arrow shooting. With many cabins available for overnight stays, guests enjoy the natural surroundings while waking up with the sun in one of nature’s most natural environments. Grand Canyon West is conveniently located just two hours from Las Vegas, and has many ways to get there, including bus, car or air.

Tommy Bahama: Beachin’ An Island Escape in the Desert
L
eave the desert in the dust, even if only for a few magic hours. Island enchantment is as near as a quick trip down the South Boulevard to Town Square, itself a world away thanks to an interior urban scene featuring restaurants, shops, a multiplex, street lights and street parking. Among the tenants is the “Island,” aka Tommy Bahama. The beachy vibe reverberates through the menu and merchandise, dining room and comfy patio that overlooks, the actual Town Square. Treat yourself to some “World Famous Coconut Shrimp,” so good on their own you hardly need the accompanying papaya-mango chutney and Asian slaw. The Macadamia Nut Encrusted Goat Cheese sings a bit of a siren song too, as does the fruit and nut Bungalow Salad. The Bungalow Favorites lead off with a crowd favorite, the blackened fish tacos that shift into overdrive with tomato relish, chipotle aioli, lime sour cream and Asian slaw. This section is also where the Cuban sandwich and baby backs with blackberry brandy BBQ reside. Or maybe you’d prefer chicken and mango salad, or roasted jerk chicken, or Hawaiian style black cod. Dessert! Pina colada cake is a slice of island heaven, but then there’s also a malted chocolate pie that adds in mocha mousse and English toffee crumble to give wretched excess a good name. And if you’re thinking, I’ll drink to that, well are you in luck. Along with more classic versions, specialty cocktails call on such flavors as pineapple, coconut, pomegranate, mango, banana, even jalapeno. Tommy Bahama opens daily at 11am, and Island Time Happy Hour rolls out from 4pm-7pm. 702-948-8006, tommybahama.com. VEGASANYWHERE
