Winning At Poker Aphorisms for Poker A

n aphorism is a concise and often witty statement of wisdom or opinion, such as “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” (from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”). In his “Essay on Criticism,” Alexander Pope wrote: “To err is human, to forgive divine.” How about aphorisms related to the game of poker? Following are two such that have occurred to me. I invite you to submit your own, related to playing poker. The best one gets a prize: a signed copy of my book describing the Hold’em Algorithm. (eEmail your candidate aphorisms to geps222@msn.com.) Poker Aphorism No. 1 “It’s more fun to win.” We all play poker to win. Usually, we are playing for something of value – primarily, money. by George “The Engineer” Epstein Whether a pro or a recreational player, our goal is to win. The more I win, the more fun it is!” Losing brings a scowl to your face; winning begets a big smile. The more you win, the brighter that smile. . . Poker Aphorism No. 2 “Win or lose, it’s how you play the game that counts.” That’s what many poker experts will tell you. That may make losing easier to accept; but, how many of you really believe that?. Wouldn’t you much rather go home a winner – even if you win by getting lucky and catching a two-outer on the river. It’s always nice when the bad beat is in your favor. Maybe the one you beat out can use this aphorism to soothe his hurt. George Epstein is retired aerospace engineer. He worked as a manager at The Aerospace Corp., where he worked with the Air Force developing military defense satellites. Upon retiring he idecided to apply his engineering and mathematical skills to poker. He has authored books on poker including 'Hold 'em or Fold 'em'. VEGAS ANYWHERE

radition can be mighty tasty, and here it might actually be considered doubled. At Osaka on west Sahara classic Japanese dishes have been served for almost 50 years - and that longevity makes it additionally a Las Vegas tradition. In that time it has garnered numerous top awards, most recently Best Japanese honors in the current R-J “Best of Las Vegas” poll. And the stamp of approval for its authenticity reverberates in its selection as one the 50 Best Japanese Restaurants by Shukan Asahi, Japan’s largest weekly magazine. Now operated by the second generation of the founding Nakanishi family, it serves a broad menu of Japanese favorites, and yes embracing such native ingredients as live surf clams, live abalone, halfbeak, bonita and rudderfish. But fear not, there are lots of options for shyer palates too. Two visual aids provide guidance to the novice and reminders to the pro about the sushi choices. One is the menu itself, with clear images and full descriptions of each and every item. As well, a video screen rotates

through the menu tempting the diner with one beautiful sushi creation after another. These mini works of art come from the deft hands of former National Sushi Competition Adjudicator of Japan and award-winning sushi chef Shingo Alhara and his all-Japanese crew. Entrees are equally decorative in their presentation and quite generous. All of course, and most important, are a treat for the palate. That’s the driving force behind Osaka’s very full trophy cabinet. Take a seat in the Tatami room, Tepanyaki grill, or sushi bar. Or, at a table at your own party, as Osaka offers full catering service. At 4205 W. Sahara, 702.876.4988, and the family has also opened a location at 10920 S. Eastern, 702.616.3788. VEGAS ANYWHERE
