People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets By Dr Jennifer Creed Food items which pose no risk to the health of humans or other animals can be detrimental for the health of a dog. The toxic food products can cause anything from mild digestive problems to fatal illness in a dog. Such food products should not be fed to a dog under any circumstances. Dog owners must be aware of the various dangerous food products that can adversely affect their canine friends. Some foods that are good for humans can be dangerous and can even be toxic for pets - due to various health problems, do not give your dog or cat his claws on these hazardous foods and keep safe.

Here, Dr Jennifer Creed has guided the some of the most common hazardous food products for dogs such as: Alcohol Alcoholic beverages must be kept away from dogs. This is because consuming alcohol results in intoxication, poor breathing, low blood sugar, arrhythmia, seizures, and acidity and can even lead to coma or death of the dog. Alcohol contains a compound called ethanol which causes respiratory and central nervous system depression in dogs. Grapes and Raisins Grapes and raisins damage the kidneys of dogs due to a toxin present in them. Kidney damage leads fatal consequences for a dog. The symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of

appetite, weakness and decreased urine production. The level of toxicity depends upon the sensitiveness of a particular dog to the toxin. Chocolate Chocolate contains chemicals named theobromine and theophylline which damage the heart, nervous system, kidney and lungs of a dog. The toxic effect of these chemical compounds results in vomiting, diarrhea and panting. Pure baking chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate. This is the reason why higher quantities of milk chocolate cause toxic effect in dogs as compared to pure baking chocolate.

Corn on the Cob Feeding corn with the cob to a dog results in the blockage of the small intestine. This is because even though the corn gets digested, the cob gets stuck in the small intestine leading to blockage. The cob needs to be removed surgically to prevent death. It is also not advisable to feed corn in huge quantities to the dog because high number of corn kernels can upset the digestive tract of the dog. Onions Onions cause Heinz body anemia in dogs. This is a pathological condition in which the red blood cells are destroyed. The kidneys also get damaged. The reason for this is the presence of disulfides and sulfoxides in onions which lead to these conditions. Candies and Chewing Gums

Candies and chewing gums contain Xylitol apart from sugar. Xylitol is a sugar-free sweetener which causes hypoglycemia in dogs by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. Salt and Salty Snack Foods High intake of salt also causes excessive thirst and urination, or sodium ion poisoning in pets. There are many snacks that are eaten in your pets that include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, shocks, elevated body temperature, seizures and even death. As such, we encourage you to avoid salt-heavy snacks such as potato chips, pretzels, and feed your pets with snacks popcorn. Yeast Dough Yeast flour can increase and your gas may accumulate in the digestive system. It can be painful and can cause the stomach to bloat, and potentially turn, can lead to dangerous emergencies in life. Yeast produces ethanol as a by-product and taking raw bread dough The dog can be drunk (see wine).
