Drop Wordz Magazine is a new publication that aims to put a twist on things. Ainsley conceived Drop Wordz Magazine at a College Fair in Kingston late last year. The fair was being hosted by College Lifestyle and when he saw their magazine, he thought to himself, “We need something like that in this vicinity” so he approached a few friends with the idea and now you’re reading our first issue. Welcome aboard! We, being the ecclectic mix of personalities and characters that we are will make it an epic journey. We at Drop Wordz Magazine live by slogan, “We say what we think not what we should”. We hope to bring that zest you haven’t been getting from other publications. We’ll make you laugh, we’ll make you think and we’ll have you noticing things that you were oblivious to before. We aim to appeal to mostly secondary and tertiary students but haven’t excluded the average man either. Contact us at: dropwordzmag@gmail.com and follow us on Twitter @dropwordz and like us on Facebook. Be sure to check out our blog too, for the latest updates from our team: http://drop-wordz.blogspot.com/.

Ainsley ‘Fuse’ Llewellyn “Yeoooooooooooooooooooow!!! Y Pree?!!!”

Well as long as you on campus and hear those utterances then the entire school population knows I'm around. The one and only Fuse in the building nah mean! So where to start hmmmm....Ok I’m the guy with all the fun and joy to share. If you're having a bad day and happen to be around me, well that’s going to change in the space of 1...2...3 minutes with me. I are in ‘loveth’ with MUSIC!! (LOL) but yea, I'm a Disc Jock with a passion for computers and graphics. They told me to write my biography but ummm… I did Physics in high school so I don't know what they talking about (LOL)....but on a more serious note I'm a chilled, easy-going, fun loving, music fanatic and a lover of women (pun intended). People say all manner of evil about me but my don't care attitude towards people is just too flawless to be broken by simple minded, ignorant people. It’s been 20 years since I've been on this earth and over that period it has been a blast, mind you I've been through a lot, but I give thanks for life every day. I love me some chicken back.....Curry, fried, jerk, and my very own creation sweet and sour chicken back....oh and how could I forget the best thing since slice bread....peanut butter!! Well in a nut shell that’s me :) but I must thank y'all for reading our magazine and making my idea a reality. Drop Wordz is here to stay people so look out for the next issue!

KHADEIL ‘Q’ WALLACE “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” ― Mae West First and foremost, hello and welcome to Drop Wordz Magazine! My name’s Khadeil Wallace but more popularly known as Q. Pleasantries first, post Happy New Year and Pre Merry Christmas. Now what or who is a Q, most refer to me as an enigma – I’m far from it. I am an unpredictable, fun-loving, charming, young man, or at least I think I am. Also, I love everything TECH! Yes people Skynet is real, it only goes by another name, GOOGLE lol. But as time progress, you will be privy to more of who I am. Most are convinced I was dropped on the head as a child or my mother stood too close to the microwave, but with all the alleged damage done, I can guarantee one thing you’ll never find someone who wears the character, Q so well – yea you can write that down Watson. Sorry for the movie reference, I’m still in my Sherlock Holmes craze. Right so, on we go Watson (laughs) OK, no more. I guess I am multilingual of sorts for I speak fluent blunt honesty, English and the language of 0’s and 1’s. See? I told you I wasn’t an enigma. Now, Drop Wordz simply put, is a quantum physics equation with 7 key but rare elements that when combined produces AWESOMENESS. And I am happy to be a member of this epic team. In the column “Ironic Much”, I will highlight some simple things over time that we take for granted in a humorous way. Although the situations are very much serious and the suggestions should be taken under advisement, one cannot help but see the irony intricately entwined in our everyday lives. I will speak the truth and only my opinionated truth and since it a well-known fact that the truth can be abrasive and harsh there is frankly no need to apologise for it – thanks to freedom of speech. The simple truth is that life itself is ironic. That’s what makes life so great!

DELANO ‘LANO’ MYERS Aye sup!” Thanks for checking out our magazine. I hope that you will continue to support us as we seek to satisfy you, our readers with what aspire to be the best magazine that you would have ever read. Ok so who is Delano Myers? He’s only the most awesome guy on earth (except in China)… and on the moon! My friends call me Lano AKA Spider (don’t ask)… but who am I really? Well good question, I’ll tell you when I figure it out…or I could just tell you what I know so far. I’m a young, vibrant, at times rehabtype crazy guy from Mandeville, Jamaica. The only thing I love more than Technology is God, my Family, my Girl, my Friends, and turkey sandwiches! God bless turkey! That’s right folks I’m Delano Myers and I’m addicted to technology (Hi Delano) that’s right addicted What?! I did say rehab type crazy didn’t I? I could tell you about my school (sucks), my favourite activities(free running and badminton), my height, my shoe size (size 9 by the way and I’m crazy over Converses) but when it comes down to the wire I’m just a guy living my life to please God.

KOLAHN ‘KG’ GARCIA “Occupation: Student/Network Admin/Gamer/DJ/White hat Hacker”

From the dawn of creation, man has been simultaneously fascinated and fearful of the unknown. Information Technology has been the bridge to help us understand many of the unanswered anomalies around us and how we can facilitate these elements to enhance life as we know it. Complementing these advancements concatenates difficult challenges but on December 28th, 1987 an Information Technology (I.T.) prodigy by the name on Kolahn Davell Garcia took his first breath as he entered the world with a designated path to understand and eradicate these and future problems with persistent innovation and problem solving. I’m currently a student at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) in pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science with programming as my main emphasis and security as its complement. What keeps me busy? A strong passion to constantly stay in sync with the realm of Information Technology, but before you get the stereotype perception that "Oh yea, another nerdy tech loving guy cooped up inside crunching away at lines of code or drooling away at every electronic beeping, flashing, sliding.....yea you get the idea." Outside of this I.T. dimension I’m a really humorous and easy going individual who thrives on making the best out of any situation. As complex as things can get in the field of Information Technology, I really prefer and appreciate the simple things to life. Back to IT though, if it’s one thing that I have learnt being in this field, is that with integrity, experience and expertise you are always in constant demand and always on the go. My colleagues can attest to this as I am always on the go and as this magazine develops you will come to understand what fuels the emotions expressed through my writing. Pretty much everything I know in this field has been self taught, and trust me in my life I have broken, burnt, twisted, cracked, smashed, fried. You name it I have probably done it, in my quest for knowledge in IT. In concluding, I am very thankful for my partnership with this magazine and look forward to sharing many articles and experiences with you, the readers.

Cavrae ‘Cav’ Green Cool, calm and collected, a fitting description for none other than Cavrae Green. Known to many as “Cav” or “Bubba,” he is often perceived as the quiet type, however we at Drop Wordz surely know better. As a result of being a DJ on the rise, he has opened up remarkably and now has a sound that can be recognized anywhere. Cav brings has a unique skill set; he’s musically artistic as well as he has a keen eye for identifying angles, also his ears can spot sound in such a unique way it’s almost borderline weird. We all know ladies love the musicians, and with Cav that’s no different. Versed in multiple instruments: namely Bass Guitar, Keyboard, Drum, and Trombone as well as vocally, now which woman wouldn’t want a slice of Cavrae? In addition, he is a lover of all things Tech, and no we are not a cult. Being the youngest in the team at Drop Wordz he bring that “youthful exuberance” that’s needed for the extra oomph. His main philosophy is, “In order to be successful in life, I must take myself out of the world and place God before everything and work to the best of my ability." He continues with “I'm going to push to the best of my ability helping to ensure that Drop Wordz Magazine is a success and the best.”

RenÉe ‘Ren’ Smith Renée ‘Ren’ Smith, a rose entangled in our thorns, although having a meek and mild exterior, she is in fact the total opposite. Acting as the big sister to all of us, and the principal to some of us, she is the glue that holds everything together. In the solar system called Drop Wordz, she is the sun and we’re the planets. But who exactly is this little bumble bee, behind the purple framed glasses. She’s a graduate from the Northern Caribbean University with a BA in Mass Communication degree as well as an ASc. in Information Science. When asked about special quirks we should know about, with a piercing stare and a tinge of irony, her soothing voice utters “I speak 3 variations of English, 1 – the language you understand, 2 – the language you would want to hear and 3 – well let’s just leave 3 for when you mess up on a large scale. She runs a tight ship as editor of the magazine; setting deadlines and projections for each project, her colleagues rarely find time to slack off. In her spare time, she is quite the avid badminton player. Once in a while, her hand may drift to the Xbox 360 controller, when she is quickly reminded by the guys, where she belongs; smack dab in the middle of a card game or board game. Like all of us she is way into tech, sporting a Dell Studio 17 which she uses to delve deeply into graphic design. The Studio makes her the odd one out but she’s at the helm commanding the ASUS team and quite frankly there’s nobody we rather have. On the party scene, she frequents a few spots and most people think she’s crazy as she replies to the music is playing in her hear. At odd interval she will just “bust a move” or “buss a whine,” apart from that she is a novice movie buff. All in all nobody is perfect, but in our eyes, she’s pretty darn close, and this will be represented in her column “Fashion from the Girl Next Door”. With her keen, magnified eyes Ren can spot a fashion catastrophe a mile away. Now, one could agree that there is a thin line between a trend and a SEND (as in send to garbage). Her column will let you recognize the group to which you belong.

KINGSTON CHRONICLES

Unwritten Rules on the Bus (Only in Jamaica) Written by: Sara

You haven’t fully experienced the JOY of travelling in Jamaica until you have had a ride on a ‘Country Bus’. The journey begins with destination, ‘Downtown’. It takes twice the time to walk to the bus park that it takes to drive from your house to Downtown. Then you have to keep up with the vendors who push you over in their ongoing efforts to outrun the ‘ Coppos’. Nonetheless, you’ve made it. There is no need to know which bus to take; there are the ever so faithful Directors of the Bus Park AKA The Back Up Man. They never forget to yell in your ear, at the top of their voice, which direction they intend for you to go (regardless of your desired destination). A woman who desired to go to Montego Bay is fighting to get out of a Mandeville bus. Wondering why? Ask The Back Up Man! Country buses are the only means of transport that require at least an hour to “load”. At the end of the loading session, there are five persons sitting in four seats. Although this seems like an uncomfortable arrangement, there is method to the madness. Apparently, the smaller the space between passengers, the more convenient the ride becomes. So here goes…. The bus is now heading out on its journey, dragging itself by the overbearing weight of bags, suitcases, tools, musical instruments and passengers. Here, the unwritten rules and policies of the Jamaican Bus Ride begin. Suddenly, the woman sitting beside you, who is travelling with a baby and 4 bags, puts two of the bags in your lap. Who dares to complain? No one! As the journey progresses, an hour has passed and the kid starts fussing and hollering in your ear in the quest to fall asleep. The woman whips out her breast, pushes it into the kid’s mouth and stretches the child across her lap. Where do the feet go? Of course in your lap with her two bags (usually a baby bag and a knapsack N.B. you never get the handbag). Again, who dares to complain? No one! Another half hour goes by and the man on the other side is ready to take a nap. You are sitting in the bus, feet now cramped from the tightly packed seating then there goes the head. The man’s head is comfortably resting on your shoulder. As the journey progresses the head falls behind you and onto your lower back. And again, who dares to complain? No one! Finally, when it becomes too much for you to bear, you shift your shoulder jus so he knows you are uncomfortable and what does he do? He snuggles right back into position. By now you are red in the face, irritated and furious so you nudge him. He awakens, looks at you with disdain and asks “A Wah?” You politely reply “You are sleeping on my shoulder.” He peers at you, eye brows knitted, looks you dead in the eye and says “So a dat yuh a wake mi up fah?” Hisses his teeth and continues “Look man, yuh no see she a bus mi inna! Weh yuh expect mi fi sleep?” You are in awe. While you are trying to figure out where you went wrong, what does he do? He leans over, places his head on your shoulder, closes his eyes and snuggles back into his most comfortable position and starts snoring. You look at the clock……….ninety (90) minutes to go!!!!!

IRONIC MUCH!!! Gentlemen: Born or Raised Written by: Q

It was always stressed by our parents that a gentleman is grown not born. We were born with a clean slate, and since then, learnt the “ropes of life” whether by nature or nurture. But is chivalry really dead? No so long ago, lessons on how to be a gentleman were a necessity for young males and girls were taught not to settle for less. As the saying goes one hand washes the other, in this case, a charismatic gentleman complements an elegant lady. Sadly however, such practices seemed to have become extinct. In the not so distant past, a whisper of a visit to your grandmother’s house was enough for children to ‘pull up their socks’. No one wanted to go there and misbehave because gramps as she was sometimes affectionately called was old school, a no nonsense kind of person, she would beat you without a shred of remorse, than give you the benefit of the doubt at the risk of an infraction go without punishment. At that time a grandma ranged from 55 upward, now a grandma is considered old at 36, is this really a society were morals and standards like simple mannerisms and chivalry are passed down? Although we are tend to be optimistic, the truth is no. Psychology should alter its personality theory of nature or nurture - to nature, nurture or media. Because the truth of the matter is most teen parents take their cues from “Motherhood for Dummies.” I never knew I would live to see the day a mother typed how to change a diaper into YouTube’s search bar. Yet these are mothers that wear the badge of motherhood so proudly and are always first to seize every opportunity to make their child the subject and predicate of each and every sentence. Men were entrusted with the mantle of being a gentleman, regardless of the young lady’s behaviour, men should keep it together. But in a society where such practices are mocked as girly and sensitive how can these practices thrive? Case and point, real men don’t cry, a real man would cry with his lady during her emotion distress or an escalated event. Last week, I was in town and saw a pregnant lady off in the distance struggling with her bags. I looked on with disdain as a group of boys strolled by her and started giggling at her waddling walk. None stopped to help her with her bags so as to relieve some of her load. These are the boys who will grow into men and have their own families, wives and daughters. Indeed it is a sad thought. The irony bleeds profusely, because these same boys will aspire to be the best husband they can be, and will want to brag about it to their peers. But little do they know that being a gentleman, training starts from birth and it never stops. Don’t be afraid to be different from the pack. In the end, that’s what makes you an unique individual. Till next time practice makes perfect. “A gentleman is a man who buys two of the same morning paper from the doorman of his favourite nightclub when he leaves with his girl." Marlene Dietrich

Games In this week’s games review we will be looking at three games from three categories: Action, Sports, and Racing. First off in the Action category we have for this week and the New Year we have the daddy of them all, one of the best FPS games ever created, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Back in 2011 in the top games of the year charts in the UK Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was crowned as the number one selling game. This comes as no surprise to most people as the game has over the years dominated all

FPS games around from Battlefield 2 to Halo 3. The game comes with a great story line for single player mode with twists and excitement keeps you on the edge of your seat. The visuals are a little updated but still using the same graphics engine with a few minor updates, most of the weapons have been reused and a few more have been added even a throwing knife, I know it may be a single use weapon but it’s my favourite! Custom classes have also gotten an almost unfair update as some would say making it more challenging for both players to gain the upper hand. One of the things that stand out most about the game are extras like support package kill streaks, and even death streaks for the ‘nubes’. The game has plenty of other awesome stuff to check out so go get it and enjoy. Second up we have in the sports category and for this week we have NBA 2k12. It’s a game that makes even none sports gamers want to give it a try. The game has come a long way and the creators took this particular installation in the series to an entirely new level. It includes some of the NBA’s greatest players and that alone makes the game stand out by bringing back the legends from past eras. The game is not only about playing either; there is a lot of inside commentary and stats on the history of the sport and the players so it’s almost like a fun history class about basketball and some of its greatest players. And last but not least, for the Racing Category we have Vin Diesel Wheelman. This game is really awesome! The main character is Vin Diesel! The objective of the game is to drop off people and pick them up when the cops start to get on your tail, the game is absolutely amazing. Graphics and story line deserve an A++! When you play you will feel like you’re a Superhuman sent from another planet who’s only super power is driving abilities, this game is available for Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, PC, DS and Dreamcast.

Gadgets This week’s gadget review will be on the Motorola Atrix 4G,the Kindle Fire and the Tegra 3 Asus Tablet.

First off the phone, the Motorola Atrix 4G it is said to be part of the new line of so called ‘super smart phones’. It runs on the popular, Android OS and it uses web-top application which boasts a full Firefox browser. This means it can dock in key boards and even TV’s and deliver full HD video from its 1.4 dual core processor. Its most outstanding accessory would be its laptop extension which features a regular laptop that can be used to transform the phone into a neat laptop. The phone also has 16 GB storage, 1 GB RAM, the selling price is $372.35

One of the newest kids on the block, the Kindle Fire released last year 2011 by Amazon has easily become one of the most inexpensive tablets to ever be made. The tablet though very inexpensive is a very good buy considering the features that come with it the Kindle Fire, unlike other tablets is not generic and from the look of it you can tell that some genuine work and thought was put into the design of the device as well as its features. The Kindle Fire has a Stunning 7”Color touch screen, a Fast Dual-Core Processor, Amazon Silk which is Amazon’s web browser which is amazingly fast because of its utilization of cloud-accelerated browsing. The Kindle Fire also gives its users free storage for all Amazon digital content in the Amazon Cloud. Books, movies, music and apps are available instantly to stream or download for free, at the touch of a finger. There are many more features to be seen and for the price, it’s worth it.

Asus’ brand new tablet, the Tegra 3, is set to be released soon. The tablet is said to be a direct competitor with the Kindle Fire as far as price is concerned which is not hard to believe with only a $50 difference. It packs all day battery life, industry leading camera, and DirectTouchd technology, allowing for a much more responsive touchscreen experience, the two companies revealed. No release date has been pegged as of yet, so stay tuned for further information on this Tegra 3 device.

New Star in Town

Star Grill is a new fast food and fine dining restaurant recently opened in Mandeville. Yes, you read right, Star Grill provides both. If you’re in the mood for a quick meal then stop down stairs but if you have that special someone on your arm and want to treat them to something more elegant then go upstairs to the VIP Dining Area. The brain child of Andrea Patmore and her husband, Paul, it aims to satisfy your taste buds. The couple had to travel mostly to Kingston to satisfy their culinary tastes though they reside in the Christiana area. They thought of a solution to this problem which was to acquire an existing franchise but when that didn’t work out, they started their own – Star Grill. Standing two stories tall on South Race Course Road, painted in shades of green, Star Grill is poised for all to see. Conveniently nestled between both uptown and downtown Mandeville, it is easily accessible if you’re walking or driving. Swing by the drive-thru if you’re in a hurry or park in the ample space provided. Double glass

doors are pulled open by the security personnel as you are greeted with a warm smile. Upon entering the establishment you are captivated by the beaming smiles of the cashier and main server to your left. When you look further to the left, you see an elegant layout of the dining area complemented by the gorgeous dĂŠcor that is accentuated by two ceiling to wall, reflective fountains at the rear as well as vibrant paintings and great lighting. Star Grill certainly aims to provide a dining experience like no other when it opened its doors on November 28, 2011. Andrea Patmore, Manager at Star Grill sat down with Drop Wordz this week to tell us more. DW: What inspired the name, Star Grill? AP: The restaurant was named after our eldest daughter, Star. DW: Why did you choose to launch Star Grill in Mandeville? AP: Mandeville needed a restaurant like Star Grill and the location offers a larger customer base than the surrounding environs. DW: What sets Star Grill apart from other restaurants?

AP: The fact that we have merged fast food with elegant dining. The dÊcor, ambience, cuisine and the warm and friendly staff has raised the bar for other restaurants in the area. Customers are filing in to experience the delicious dishes and enjoy the superb customer service. DW: What makes Star Grill’s menu unique? AP: We serve mostly jerked and baked dishes. We try to use as little oil and grease as possible. Our dishes while scrumptious are still far healthier than the typical fast food restaurant. DW: What are some of the custom dishes offered by Star Grill? AP: One that has become popular with the customers is the Ainsley Ring The Alarm Burger. This meal is comprised of a burger marinated in jerk seasoning grilled with pepper, homemade spicy barbecue sauce and served with lettuce, tomatoes and French fries. DW: What does the VIP dining offer? AP: VIP Dining is upstairs and offers a more intimate dining area and ambience that is perfectly suited for dates, private dinners or just an evening out. DW: What are the future plans for Star Grill? AP: We hope to expand to other locations in the future, probably Kingston and Montego Bay. We offer a unique product that appeals to the masses.

The Patmores sought to fill the need for a restaurant that offers both elegant dining as well as scrumptious, healthier fast food with Star Grill. By doing so, they have raised the bar for all the restaurateurs in Mandeville. For a reasonable price, you can bite into a jerk sandwich or burger, an authentic Jamaican meal or a dish from another land. Whatever your tastes, Star Grill has something for you. Visit them at 20 South Race Course Road, Mandeville, Manchester or call 632-3834 to place your order today.

Dine with Henry Written by: Henry

Welcome to the first of many dining delights with yours truly Henry Osborne. It is said that some people eat to live while others live to eat. I belong to the third camp that enjoys preparing and enjoying a meal. I've had the privilege of being introduced to a few cultures outside of my own and I would like to share their culinary diversity with you. I'll begin with dishes from countries or cultures I've visited, move on to countries I've passed through, local dishes, and finally other international dishes. Get ready to go on a journey of salivary proportions. Our featured dish comes to us from the Mediterranean, from the country of Greece specifically (I was actually in Cyprus but that's close enough, same culture). Απολαύστε το! (Enjoy! in Greek)

Grilled Chicken with Almond and Garlic Sauce Serves 4 For the best flavor, marinate the chicken overnight. If you're short of time, use a 15-ounce can of cannellini or lima beans instead of the dried beans. With this rich, garlicky sauce, you need only a fresh salad to complete the meal.

Sauce • • • • •

9 ounces dried large white beans, such as lima beans 1/2 cup ground almonds 2 garlic cloves 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar Scant 1/2 cup olive oil

• • • •

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon cold-pressed flaxseed oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper

2 spring chickens (poussins), (about 2 pounds each)

Juice of 1 lemon

3 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

3 tablespoons dry white wine

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 onion, finely chopped

Salt and pepper

2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs, such as parsley, thyme, or oregano

Lemon wedges, to serve

Preparation 1. For the sauce, soak the beans in a generous amount of water overnight. 2. Using poultry sheers, cut each chicken along the backbone and remove as much of the backbone as possible. Press the chickens with your fist to flatten them slightly and then place them in a large glass dish that will fit in the refrigerator. 3. Combine the lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, wine, garlic, onion, and some salt and pepper in a blender and purée to make a paste. Spread the paste over the chicken and massage it into the meat. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or, preferably, overnight. 4. The next day, drain the beans, put them in a saucepan, and add enough fresh water to cover the beans by about 3 inches. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat, and simmer the beans until completely soft, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Drain well. 5. Put the beans, almonds, garlic, and vinegar in a food processor and process to a smooth paste. Gradually add the olive oil and lemon juice through the hole in the lid, processing to a thick sauce. Add the flaxseed oil and season with salt and pepper. Set aside. 6. Preheat the broiler until very hot, prepare the grill, or preheat the oven to 350°F. 7. Wipe away excess marinade from the chicken, then cook under the broiler, on the barbecue or in a roasting pan in the oven until cooked through, approximately 45 minutes. Test by piercing the thickest part of the flesh with a knife: when the chicken is cooked, the juices will run clear. 8. Cut the chickens in half, sprinkle with the herbs, and serve with the sauce and lemon wedges.

Spirits of Smith How to Pair Wine with Food Since the dawn of time, ok maybe not that long, but for a long time, the question has been asked, “Which wine goes best with my meal?” The answer is both simple and complex, “simplex” if you will, you’re guess is as good as mine. Just kidding! One could study up on the meal being prepared and pair it with the recommended bottle of wine, become a sommelier 1, or use the following guidelines to find an appropriate match. The three most important rules when it comes to wine-and-food pairing are: 1. Drink and Eat What You Like Choose a wine that you would want to drink by itself, rather than hoping a food match will improve a wine made in a style you don’t like. That way, even if the pairing isn’t perfect, you will still enjoy what you’re drinking; at worst, you might need a sip of water or bite of bread between the dish and the glass. The same holds true for the food: After all, if you detest liver, there is no wine pairing with it on earth that will work for you. 2. Look for Balance Consider the weight—or body, or richness—of both the food and the wine. The wine and the dish should be equal partners, with neither overwhelming the other. If you balance the two by weight, you raise the odds dramatically that the pairing will succeed. This is the secret behind many classic wine-and-food matches. 1

There’s a fair amount of instinct to this. Hearty food needs a hearty wine. Cabernet Sauvignon complements grilled lamb chops because they’re equally vigorous, but the dish would run roughshod over a crisp white wine. In contrast, a light Soave washes down a subtly flavored poached fish because they are equals in delicacy. How do you determine weight? For the food, fat—including what comes from the cooking method and the sauce—is the main contributor. (Note how a salad with blue cheese dressing feels heavier than one with citrus vinaigrette, as does fried chicken versus poached.) For a wine, you can get clues from the color, grape variety and alcohol level, along with the winemaking techniques and the region’s climate. (Wines with less than 12 percent alcohol tend to be lighter-bodied; those with more than 14 percent are heavier.) 3. Match the Wine to the Most Prominent Element in the Dish This is critical to fine-tuning wine pairings. Identify the dominant character; more often it is the sauce, seasonings or cooking method, rather than the main ingredient. Consider two different chicken dishes: Chicken Marsala, with its browned surface and a sauce of dark wine and mushrooms, versus a chicken breast poached in a creamy lemon sauce. The caramelized, earthy flavors of the former tilt it toward a soft, supple red, while the simplicity and citrus flavors of the latter call for a fresh white. Once you’ve considered these three important rules, you can get more detailed if you want and consider other subtleties of the wine. First it’s useful to understand the components from the grapes that make up a wine’s structure: the fruit flavors and sugar, which give wines a soft feel in the mouth, and the acidity and tannins, which give wines a sensation of firmness. And of course, there’s the alcohol, which can feel softer in smaller amounts, harder in higher ones. Red wines are distinct from whites in two main ways: tannins and flavors. Tannins are compounds that provide structure and texture to a wine; they’re responsible for that astringent sensation you feel on the sides of your cheeks, much like when you drink a strong cup of tea. Many red wines have tannins; few white wines do, unless they have spent extensive time in oak barrels. White and red wines share many common aromas and flavors; both can be spicy, buttery, leathery, earthy or floral. But the apple, pear and citrus flavors in many white wines seldom show up in reds, and the dark currant, cherry and plum flavors of red grapes usually do not appear in whites. Finding the perfect match between wine and meal is not an exact science but the best way to find the perfect pairing, and also the most fun way, is to experiment. 1 on 1 with Your Health In our first issue we'll focus on hypertension. Have you ever been around some elderly folks and they say their 'pressure' is high? Well Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure. Blood pressure is a measurement of force against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood through your body.

Blood pressure readings are usually given as two (2) numbers -- for example, 120 over 80 (written as 120/80 mmHg). One or both of these numbers can be too high. The normal range is less than 120 over 80. Many factors can affect blood pressure, including: - How much water and salt you have in your body - The condition of your kidneys, nervous system, or blood vessels - The levels of different body hormones You have a high risk of high blood pressure if you: - are of African descent - are obese - are often stressed or anxious - drink too much alcohol - use too much salt in your diet - have a family history of high blood pressure - have diabetes - smoke Most of the time, there are no symptoms. For most patients, high blood pressure is found when they visit their health care provider or have it checked elsewhere. Because there are no symptoms, people can develop heart diseases and kidney problems without knowing they have high blood pressure. If you have a severe headache, nausea or vomiting, confusion, changes in your vision, or nosebleeds you may have a severe and dangerous form of high blood pressure called malignant hypertension

Fuse with Di Music Written by: Fuse

2011: the year of great disappointments for dancehall music, from drug charges being laid against our artistes, to them being arrested for murder but let’s not dwell on the negative. The year 2011 was the year of great breakthrough for a lot of upcoming artistes in the dancehall industry, from the raving king Popcaan to the 'Swagga Ras' Zagga from Ocho Rios. Without a doubt 2011 was a splendid year for some artistes. In my eyes, the song of the year is 'Raving' from the summertime riddim. Produced by Dinero, the song outdid Vybz Kartel's 'Summertime' track by far. This year the Gaza camp has brought some great music to dancehall along with some talented artistes such as Tommy Lee and Gaza Slim just to name a few. As usual, dancehall would not be dancehall without drama and in saying this, I speak of the longest dispute in dancehall (since I've been alive), the Beenie and Bounty saga. Yea, we know it’s played out, they've been back and forth at this 'war' for over a decade and it always ends with Bounty being victorious. Hmm, now any smart person would know when to admit defeat correct? But Beenie Man knows no bounds. Over the air waves he might have songs that outdo Bounty but on a stage.......it’s Bounty all day, every day.

New Artistes On The Rise ZAGGA Saint Ann has produced great people over the years, from our national hero, Marcus Garvey, to the reggae legend Bob Marley, we can see that this parish is not only known for its beauty but it also possesses great treasures. Born Austill Henry, more popularly known to his fans and peers by his stage name ZAGGA, this 21-year old musician at an early age, set his sights on achieving greatness within the music industry and life itself. He has been doing music since age 10 and while attending the Ocho Rios Primary School, he could be found knocking on desks with his hands to bring out his own musical flavour. Upon his advancement to Ocho Rios High School, he performed in most of the school's events. “I can recall modeling for Black History month celebration, I was Mr. Ethiopia and got 1st runner up and after modeling I ripped the stage up with a smashing performance”, he reminisced.

“The fight is only over when you win, losing is not an option” - Zagga At age 12 Zagga was introduced to hip hop/rap music by his friends, “Blaze and Bollo”. His first hip hop icons were DMX and Slim Shady and did he enjoy their music! He then started to gravitate towards hip hop, exploring it and discovering its cultures as well as the different hip hop artists and what they had to offer. Now with all that knowledge and years of listening, he has managed to effectively merge the style of hip hop, dancehall/reggae and pop so that fans and veterans of the music industry can acknowledge as well as enjoy and see the potential in it.

He released his first ever mixtape on April 1, 2011 titled “The Remix God”. As the title states, it is filled with popular songs all remixed by Zagga. The mixtape served its purpose and got him the attention needed as it did well on radio with a number of requests each day on popular radio stations in Jamaica such as ZIP 103 FM, HITS 92 FM and IRIE FM. The mixtape did well not just with radio plays but with over two thousand downloads within a week of its availability along with good reviews by disc jockeys, artistes and fans. Good friend of Zagga, Ruption of RD Studios has always been a fan of Zagga. After the unofficial release of the song titled “Island Breeze” on the “Island Vibes Riddim” from Zagga’s mixtape, Ruption heard it and it piqued his interest which prompted him to pitch this song to producer Jordan McClure of Chimney Records. Not long after a meeting was called and Zagga found himself face to face with producers of Chimney Records discussing a management deal. After said deal was finalized, Zagga released songs such as “Versatile in Love” on the Steel Strings Riddim (September 2011), “When We a Meck Steppings” on the Steppings riddim released by Romeich Records, his single “Change” (November 2011), “Money me want” on the Intensity Riddim (November 2011). He has been interviewed by various radio stations and appeared in newspapers. `In the near future, Zagga sees himself performing at many popular events, collecting Grammys, breaking records in addition to leaving monumental marks in the music industry. Also his mixtape titled 'The Remix God' can be downloaded on our blog, www.drop-wordz.blogspot.com.

JAHMEIL This next artiste is a member of the YVP (Young Vibes Production) Family who came to the nation's attention in 2011. He is non other than the talented Jahmeil. Jahmiel grew up in Portmore, St. Catherine. He lists his father as having a major influence on him as a person. TCX – The College Xperience The College Xperience for many is everything that happens throughout a student’s tenure at a tertiary institution. To four young men, students of Northern Caribbean University, it is much more than that. Marlon, Dwayne, Travis and Sean, although from different majors came together for a greater good – to throw kickass parties! They are of the view that college is much more just a rite of passage. As the group describe themselves on Facebook: “TCX is about friends coming together to have fun, living it up not giving a damn. T.C.X. Is an escape from the stress of college life, an escape to the ‘funner’ side; … where worries and inhibitions can be left behind. Why? Because your with good people; we take care of each other. So drink and be merry (get drunk/fucked up If you like), cut loose and just dance (dance like no one is looking). You'll be taken care of and we'll be able to laugh about It another day.” But really how was this idea conceptualized? Drop Wordz spoke with the group to find out exactly where and how it started. When asked how it started they all agreed that it started on a whimsical bet. One Friday night, Sean made a bet with Dwayne, that if Dwayne could fill Sean’s house with women the following Saturday then he would pay $3000.00. Dwayne, being quite the enthusiast especially when there’s money involved took on the challenge. Dwayne won the bet and TCX was born. To date, there have been 13 house parties and 1 club banger totalling 14 successful parties with themes such as Halloween X, Game Night, etc. Dwayne seemed pleased with himself as he elaboratd that it has taken hard work to get to this point. At first, the parties were free and catered to a select few. In an elated tone, he boasted that the TCX patrons consumed over 7 gallons of alcohol on a meagre budget. Now that was an accomplishment! We asked what kept TCX running like a well oiled machine, Marlon went on to answer “we all see where the need is for students so we aim to fill that gap,” he went on to say “ even if some of us have double roles we just do what we have to.” He continued by

listing the job description of each member of the group Dwayne – Mixologist and overall management; Sean – Event Planner/Manager; Travis – security and finally Marlon – Decorator, Mixologist and the group’s Public Relations Officer. Individually T.C.X. has influenced each member in a different way. They compared TCX to an American college fraternity, it’s not just a place to party but it’s a family. For Marlon and Dwayne, TCX has helped them to interact with people on a more personal level. Unlike the typical party group, which only sees their audience at the party or promo events, TCX management ensures that every Friday or Saturday they ‘lyme’, chat and mingle. They talk about everything and offer help where needed and refer where necessary. They emphasised the point that TCX is here to change the stigma attached to the way college students party, and they are changing this stigma one party at a time “our parties are exclusive to select college students and showing them the true way to party college style” Dwayne assured. If captivated by this TCX group, be sure to come and check out their latest conception “JANUS” which is the abbreviation for, January Announcing a New University Standard. Taken from roman mythology, Drop Wordz was educated by Dwayne on how this concept came about; “Janus was a 2 faced god and the gate keeper to heaven and transition. In applying that concept, we (T.C.X.) want to transition to a better group than we are now. We want to give you parties that are heavenly and 2 faced in the fact that we will offer elegant parties and hardcore parties all from the same outfit.”

Come check out J.A.N.U.S. on Saturday January 28, 2012 at deCarteret Road, Mandeville. Dress code is semi-formal to symbolize the transition and it will be strongly enforced. Admission: $700.

On The Big Screen Movies! Movies! Movies! What would the world be like without movies? You can try to imagine that. I love movies far too much to ever live without them. Oh! Welcome to Drop Wordz Magazine, and to my column “The Big Screen” that’s all about movies. 2011 was an exciting year for moves. In no specific order, there were blockbusters such as: Thor, Captain America, X-Men: First Class, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strangers Tide, Rango, Kung Fu Panda 2, Piranha 3D, Red and Captain America. Now you should agree with me that the movies I am about to name according to numerous polls were the MOST anticipated movies of 2011. Now, some people probably think we’re weird for counting down to the release date for these movies but clearly the epic magnitude of these movies escapes them. Drum roll please… some of the most anticipated movies 2011 were: Fright Night So yea I know you didn’t expect to see this here however, there’s a myth that vampires and the box office are best buds. They don’t ever fail. The script was well written and although treated mostly as humour, the movie rarely lost ferocity. With a well-rounded cast, leading male role, Collin Farrell delivered a star studded performance. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check it out, released October 7th 2011.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 Now this was on the lips of every adventure fanatic since part 1 was released in 2010. How would the mighty Harry Potter finally vanquish *Voldemort, some wondered while the true Harry Potter fans were waiting to see the final book play out on the big screen. Although through excellent direction, some scenes added more depth than the book, fans nonetheless applauded the emotional roller coaster they rode for the full series and considered it a fitting and emotional end to one of the best movies series developed. Released July 15th, 2011.

Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon Despite the negative reviews that the movie received from critics, no one can argue that it was not an anticipated blockbuster. The third film in the franchise, Micheal Bay once again wowed and shocked us with stunning visual effects and flawless 3D rendering, that to the average man was good enough to rival Avatar. However, no matter how pretty it looked. It was labelled as “possessing a shabby and thin script coupled with its inflated running and the repetitious plot only added to their detriment as it earned only 4.9/10 from rottentomatoes.com ranking it at 35 % on the tomatometer.

Fast Five Damn! This was a movie of epic proportions! This movie kicked some major butt. For millions of persons, myself included, the release of this movie, April 9, marked the start of summer. Fans all over the world flooded the cinemas on opening night to see the return of Vin “Dom” Diesel and Paul “Brian” Walker on the run together. Once again the ladies where well represented in the film as Dom’s sister, Mia (played by Jordana Brewster) was behind the wheel again and Gal, (Gisele Harabo), joined the crew for one last heist. It that wasn’t enough the girl audience got more than they could bargain with the inclusion of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I had the pleasure of checking this movie out on opening night. Excited screams reverberated throughout the cinema when the stars faced off. Fast Five achieved financial success, breaking box office records for the highest-grossing April opening weekend and the second highest spring opening weekend. It surpassed Fast & Furious (2009) to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise and overtook Rio to become the highest-grossing film of 2011, holding this title for fifteen days before being replaced by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Fast Five has grossed over $625 million worldwide, making it number 56 on the all-time worldwide list of highest-grossing films, in unadjusted dollars.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt 1 So after all the begging and pleading Bella finally got what she wanted – to make love to Edward and become a vampire. As stated before the box office loves vampires and I’m sure they are happy with the proceeds from this movie which is far less “action packed” than its predecessors with the only outstanding sequence being when Edward recalls an early lapse into lethal bloodsucking. Despite this, it does give some important details for the next movie. I won’t give any spoilers especially for those none readers. Overall it was a good movie and part 2 promises to be a lot more awesome and exciting.
