College Access: Who are They? By: Fuse
If you’re a student of Northern Caribbean University, you must have heard about College Access. People might see them and assume they’re just a group of young men who love to party and get drunk but at Drop Wordz we seek full disclosure for dynamic groups such as College Access. We contacted them for an exclusive interview so we could share what they have to offer with the masses. DW: What is College Access? CA: College Access is a group of individuals who aim to form a promotional enterprise. If you want something to be promoted then College Access is the go to group to do so. A lot of people consider us to be a party group. Yes we do keep parties but we’re not limited to just parties. We do promotions for parties, brands, events, you name it we promote it. This group is like an island wide fraternity where we have a member in most universities and colleges across the island ranging from UTECH, UWI to Church Teachers College here in Mandeville so it’s not just limited to NCU. DW: How did College Access begin? CA: Well it all started with a birthday party for one of our members. It wasn’t a money oriented venture, it was just us inviting people over to party with us, to have fun and vibe. We then started talking about having a Thursday
6
night party seeing that here at NCU, our weekend pretty much starts on a Thursday but we found the venue too small to hold such a crowd. Being students at NCU we’ve come to learn that it’s pretty rough on us as students hence we decided not to charge anyone to enter so we pooled together, made some rum punch and other beverages, called up some females and invited them to come party with us and as long as females are there males will be present. We have members in all departments on campus so from there we just capitalized on the idea. DW: How many members are there in the group, College Access? CA: Well we’re in the process of formalizing everything where each member will have to sign a contract to say they’re in the College Access group but apart from that we have ten [10] members who we consider to be the executive body of the group. DW: How has the support been so far for this group? CA: It has been overwhelming so far I must say. People island wide, even here in our university, have been calling us to do promotional work for them. They see us as having a level of influence over the populous and with that, getting their products or events out there using our status is a good marketing scheme so yea the support has been
DW: How long has College Access been around?
March we’ll be in Mandeville town giving away food to the homeless because we’re not just about partying as we’ve stated before but we’re about helping others live.
CA: Well we’ve been around since September of 2011.
DW: Anything in the pipeline for your fans out there?
DW: What would you say has been your most memorable College Access moment?
CA: Well we have our interactive website up and running, where you can sign up from anywhere in the world and just vibe with us. We have news updates, live online radio, we’ll be hosting a show on our website to talk about current affairs, things affecting us as university students or as young adults in today’s society plus we have many things in store for our fans.
great.
CA: Well the first College Access party. There was no theme; nothing was planned just partying and having fun. That party was EPIC! Footprints in the ceiling, house being wrecked, it was just total chaos but it was fun nonetheless. I even heard someone came for 15 minutes, left and said it was the best 15 minutes of their life so yea that would definitely be our most memorable College Access moment. DW: Any advice for groups out there trying to do what you do? CA: Be original; think about what the people want. If you’re going to do this don’t do it for the money do it for the love and the fun of it. If we were doing this for the money then we wouldn’t be where we are and who we are right now. we focus on the respect we earn and the fun we have with our fellow students. DW: When will the next College Access party held? CA: March 15th called Soca Madness. We have some other things working on such as our charity sometime in

Jamaica Land We Love By: Sara
Our beautiful island of Jamaica - the land of wood
and water. Though this statement suggests there are no people & animals there, it holds some truth. If you have travelled across the 14 parishes of this country you must agree that the scenery is breathtaking. The landscape is beyond awesome and the tourist attractions are quite unique. Outside of the chaotic city of Kingston (no offence Kingstonians) the wind is cool; the air is so fresh & clean. It’s simply marvelous! But amidst all this beauty there are THE PEOPLE.
“I am from everywhere. Because of my job I have no set home. I’m a traveller.” Jamaicans are the most unique set of inhabitants this world has ever seen. They are extraordinary in all aspects. I proved this a few weeks ago when I encountered the most unique elderly man during one of my regular journeys from the country. On entering the vehicle, the elderly man carried quite a few pieces of heavily packed luggage. Just like most elderly Jamaicans, the man started telling us stories as soon as he entered the vehicle. Quickly, we learned of his career- very unique one. He politely explained that he wrote tributes for dead people
and told us of all the famous people he had written tributes for. This led into a few history lessons that were quite beneficial. During the conversation, the cab driver asked the elderly gentleman where he was from. The gentleman replied, “well, you know I am from everywhere. Because of my job I have no set home. I’m a traveller.” I was fascinated as I was meeting a nomad for the first time. The driver then asked “so what are you doing in these parts?” The gentleman replied, “well dere is a funeral home ere dat mi fren own. When mi jus start working him used to be my little link u know cause him would know all di dead people dem. So since I was passing through di area mi decide to jus go an look for him. But when mi reach and ask for Mas Trevor, everybody looking on mi weird. So mi ask again & finally a lickle yute say to mi, boss mi no know weh yuh a go find him yuh kno. Mas Trevor dead from 1995!” Can you imagine the dismay on the elderly man’s face and the tears in my eyes from laughing too hard? That was just too funny! *Mas Trevor- renamed for the purpose of this article.

Top 10 Scams and Hoaxes on Facebook! By: KG Ok, so issue 4 is here, oh how we have matured. And with maturity comes time to help articulate a lot of you Facebook users out there who still (shakes head) falls prey to many scams/hoaxes that are on Facebook so let’s do a compilation of the Top 10 scams and hoaxes on Facebook you should recognize in 3 seconds. Ok so with the help of a relic laptop, random Facebook account and DropWordz only trusted security suite Bitdefender Total Security.
various add-ons which, once installed in your browser, make your account appear different. It’s like looking at a black horse through a white striped window and saying you see a zebra. You can have your zebra; as long as you make sure the add-on you download does nothing more than help you see virtual reality according to your sense of style.
1. See who viewed your profile and its countless variants This is the scam of a thousand faces. Stalkers, peekers, greatest admirers, exes haunting you, people with a secret crush on you….or simple statistics of your profile visitors (broken down by gender)….this is the social engineering arsenal that resurfaces now and then. It’s a never ending story still riding high and reeling in hundreds of users. Facebook DOES NOT !!! allow any app to compute such statistics, so don’t give in to this temptation
3. Facebook will start charging beginning with [date]; Facebook will close beginning with [date] How many times have these hoaxes made your heart skip a beat? Too many? Just double-check this kind of panic-inducing news before you repost it. End of Facebook, end of the world as we know it…well, who’s to say when that happens? As for the platform starting to charge for its services ....the answer’s on the wall. Always is always.
4. Add Facebook Functions: new buttons (dislike, love, etc.) 2. Change Your Facebook Background The grass is always greener and Facebook is always blue? Scammers have the thing for you. At best, the final steps of these semi-scams take you to sites providing
12
Hate to burst your bubble, but NO, you cannot add buttons to your Facebook account with various apps that spring up now and then. The Facebook crowd loves tradition (just think how many hearts were broken by the appearance of the Timeline) so any change to platform
functionalities is sure to be debated at length. Again, just double-check whether the thing you want to install actually exists. If it does, you’re sure to come across heated online discussions on the new addition’s pros and cons. If, once you click to see the wonder, you get stuck in a sea of blind likes and shares; the button is definitely a false promise. Stop right there before you subscribe to tens of unknown pages carrying potentially dangerous content.
definitely arouse some interest. If you cannot help but click, just make sure you don’t fall into the blind like and share trap or into the arms of its upgraded sibling- the fake add-on/extension/update that begs to be installed.
8. [Celebrity x] dies / is caught doing scandalous act. To paraphrase a celebrity very much alive: death and sex make the world go round. Curiosity is the name of the plague and unless you simply don’t give any animal’s rear end about the topic at hand, you’re pretty much a sitting duck for this kind of scam.
9. See sex tape/naked photos of [celebrity x] Leaked videos or photos that seem to answer any voyeur’s prayers? Just say NO. Or, if you cannot hold your clicking pants on, just make sure what follows is not just another one of those “take this quiz” or “install this exe” tricks. Otherwise you may get “lucky” in more ways than one!
5. Gift Card/ Cool Gadget Giveaways If it sounds too good to be true… it’s a scam. A little math plus some research will keep you safe. Here’s how: in the example below, you’ve got $200 gift cards for the first 10,000 people who participate. That’s 2 million $ ….Look it up: is eBay really giving away that kind of money? If true, then the story should have made at least one headline. If not, chances are you’ll find out it’s all a lie.
10. To see [hot topic of the day] install browser 6. Like and share schemes using atrocious im- extension/add-on or youtube/flashplayer update. ages (maimed animals, suffering children) Social networks are known to have played an essential role in coagulating social movements or in raising awareness about various causes. Unfortunately, hoaxes that play the charity tune do a lot of harm because they create a constant feeling of mistrust and sadly mock the idea of solidarity. Again, a quick online search will save the day and the cause (if any) as it’ll help you tell the genuine from the fake.
No matter what the pretext, the scam’s not over ‘till you install something. Preferably something unauthorized and phishy. To deal with this kind of situation, just uninstall the fake browser extension/add-on. This is the only thing that will end the hijack and allow you to access your account. All product and company names mentioned herein are

Protect Your Passwords By: KG
“Implore to explore to secure” - Kolahn Garcia
If you haven’t changed your most important passwords in a long time, take 15 minutes today to do it!! !!!!! Ok so for the umpteenth I am going to say this....I am BEGGING everyone to take a few minutes...read this article and take the necessary actions into securing your passwords...your computer and possible cyber defamation of character. Ok so hear is some ugly truths you NEED to know. Bitdefender is the number one consumer based antivirus and firewall as of the ending of December 2011. The reason I said consumer based is due to the reality of more complex, military based encryptions that are only privileged to an elite few. Ok to the meat of the matter..... Have you ever been on websites and saw badges @ the bottom....protected by this or that.....automatically we feel a sense of safety and peace of mind but I persuade you that not all the times this is so. I won’t go through the whole song and dance about identity theft and fraud but let me enlighten you all with a short experience I had. Back in my younger years as a network administrator I was in charge of an online forum that demanded users’
14
credentials to enter. Emails use to come from time to tome where people requested a password reset for whatever reason. When I logged in to help these personnel I could see their email address and password -all there, all unencrypted. Now this online site did not contain crucial financial information but if any user reused this password and email combo anywhere else let say banking web site or email program, I am more than certain I could log in. 75 percent of people use the same password for both their email and Facebook accounts, according to a study by Bitdefender.” Now yes I know many of you reading are guilty and you SHOULD!!! Now let’s look @ some steps you can take to rectify many mistakes that I know you all are currently committing. Prioritizing- Which emails are the most important? Ok so everyone sees the importance of their passwords in various orders but mine looks something like this: 1. Laptop 2. Hotmail 3. Yahoo 4. Google/Gmail 5. Banking account/online 6. Facebook 7. Twitter
8. Blackberry Ok so just to clear up one thing, to bypass the user logon password on windows is easy as cake and doesn’t provide any form of security for the advanced personnel. But you can add some perks to make this task more tedious, you can Google Predator Security and TrueCrypt…moving onwards…..email, email emails….these are the white blood cells when it comes to password recovery or anything in terms of the web; signing up almost anywhere requires an email account.
different password. If creating complex passwords is a little killer on the intellect then you can use on3 of two methods. As I said before Google is your friend, you can search for PC TOOLS secure password generator. This free tool will create a strong password for you if you tell it how long, whether it should include mixed case, numbers, punctuation or similar character replacement. Step two, you can test your passwords @
http://howsecureismypassword.net/, they even tell you how long it would take a regular desktop to crack your password. (when and if you use this site make sure to change at least one character when you decide to use it. It’s a free and useful service but I am not sure if they have key loggers involved and blah blah. With a recipe in place now you can go ahead and make the necessary changes to your credentials. You can jot down in order the changes that you need to make and t them off as you go along. If this takes you less than 15 minutes you might as well check the mailing address and email addresses are up to date for all these passwordprotected sites too.
OK!!!! Let’s start with cleaning up the mess many of you are in…FIRST THING…To create a strong password, spell a word backwards, substitute numbers for letter, and randomly throw in capital letter or special character here and there. e.g. Ko0133c@f many of you sit and stair and wonder just a random combination but that’s FaceBook backwards (the 13 is used to form a B)….so you can be creative with it. Now make sure it’s something you can remember, I don’t want hear I am responsible for you creating something too hard and you can’t remember. Ok so you have the idea of how complex should be….go run and secure all your email addresses and come back and continue reading.
It’s a good practice to change your passwords every 72 days! Now that you have that in place….if you have multiple email addresses, it’s really a good option if you link them together. For example if I have an email address that’s xxx@x.com and yyy@y.com. Make them both an alternative to each other so in case one is compromised, you can use the alternative to recover the primary. Now you have step 2 down, we are making progress, try not to repeat a password and email option for any of your accounts….well I mean your email can be the same but

Your Partner is Cheating When... By: Cav
Many relationships are known to end due to infidelity. There are many mistakes that can be forgiven in a relationship, but cheating is one of those unforgiving ones. Usually you suspect there may be someone else but you do not know how to find out for sure. All the signs are there but proof is needed. Pay keen attention to these signs and your instinct but, be careful not to confuse signs with proof. Here are some indications:
1. Starts coming home late very often If your mate is normally always home at a particular time and suddenly starts coming home consistently late. It could be something/someone that's keeping him/her busy but it wouldn't be amiss to casually
18
ask him/her a few questions about it. If he/she is evasive or vague about the reasons, the alarm bells should ring.
2. Gets defensive if you ask questions Beware if he/she acts guilty if you ask questions or try to probe. Life should be an open book for two individuals in love and if you're sharing his/her life and /or bed you have a right to certain answers. If he/she starts acting defensive or gets irritable and wants to avoid answering you'd better watch out!
3. Wants to go out with friends exclusively If he/she keeps making excuses to go out on dates with you only or be alone with you, your antenna
should be up. Also, if your partner keeps wanting to meet with their friends and tell you things like "You wouldn't be comfortable, it's guys only" or “the ladies night out”, you'd do well after a while, to do a background check with some of those guys he's claiming to go out with. It's best to appear casual in your questioning though because; in case he's telling the truth you wouldn't want him to accuse you of snooping around.
4. The scent that's not yours If you've got the nose of a bloodhound and you smell a flowery fragrance on him or if she doesn't smoke yet you keep finding her reeking of tobacco, be on your guard. If after a long hard day at work and he/she is home smelling like spring time, be on your guard.
5. Extra effort into their appearance After being in a relationship for a while, most people get complacent and start neglecting their appearance. If he/she is one of those, and suddenly starts taking extra care to be impeccably groomed/ well dressed, they could be trying to impress someone else.
6. The classic 'lipstick on the collar' Connie Francis didn't sing "Lipstick on your collar, told a tale on you", for nothing. She truly meant every word. The song goes on "Lipstick on your collar, said you were untrue. Bet your bottom dollar, you and I are through...". While most cheaters are good at covering up their tracks, it wouldn't hurt to watch out for this obvious sign.
make an effort to spice it up. But if your partner becomes lackadaisical about sex it should trigger a warning. They may be just plain tired but that should be temporary. If it is prolonged, there could be a deeper physiological problem that you need to check, or are they getting it from somewhere else.
9. Secretive If your previously open and communicative partner suddenly goes into a shell and clams up or starts concealing things from you, be warned.
10. Wants privacy If he/she wants to be left alone when on the phone or stops in the middle of a phone conversation when you enter the room and tells the caller he/she will call back, ask yourself why. If a relationship is to be successful, both partners must trust implicitly. It is not healthy to be wary in a relationship or on your guard all the time. Also, your partner should exhibit not just one or two but most of the above signs before you begin to suspect them. You should know your partner well enough to figure out when you should be suspicious. But then, you also thought you knew them well enough to think they would never cheat on you.
11. Go with the guts The most important thing to follow is your guts. You know your partner better than anyone else so you can instantly pick up when something is not right. If you suspect something, don’t be afraid to investigate it further. If you go with your guts and nothing is wrong I don’t think that she has nothing to worry about.
7. Indifference If you find your partner indifferent, unresponsive or uncaring you have a problem on your hands. If your used to your partner giving you all the love and attention and you see where that slowly disappear then there is a problem on your hand. If he/she is not cheating, you need to anyway tackle the problem and figure out what it is.
8. Lack of interest in sex When a couple settles into a relationship, the sex often becomes boring and predictable unless you

An Educational Trim It is said that you learn most in the classroom. Well on a Saturday recently, that was not the case. On the 11th of February, I ventured into my regular barbershop to have my hair groomed. Upon entering the barbershop I saw a crowd deep in discussion. Now seeing that it’s a barbershop, I stereotyped the group and discussion to be that of something lude or bar related. However, I was greatly surprised by the conversation that was actually taking place. I’m telling you that you’ve never before been privy to a conversation as passionate and deeply rooted as this one in a barbershop. I know, I know the suspense is killing you, If you’ve ever been to a barbershop you should or would know that conversations in the salon almost always centre around sports whether its important to the country and or culture. The barbershop is always filled with the unofficial analysts, specialists and spectators. They always know what you should do and what not to do, how to play, and in most cases, what the outcome of the game will be. What were they talking about that was so interesting you ask. Firstly, the topic of Iran came up and my barber, Chris and his friend got a spark like no other. The friend said "Chris what a gwaan ina ur place man?" he further went to educate Chris about the recent happenings in Iran. So I gathered that Iran’s top sciceintist was killed with no retatliation. Chris in his defense, enlightened his friend that the Ayatollah was on a visit to Cuba and was chilling with Fidel Castro. Now if you are like me, your head should be hurting by now. They went on to argue about what the Iranian government should do as a reprisal and that it needed to be done quickly before they lost face with their allies. I was amazed at intensity and understanding with
22
which they spoke. It was as if they worked or had Top Secret intelligence outlining the events in a detailed manner. But as usual the convo did not stop there. Oh no! The Gibson relays was being aired on TV and that’s where they went next. Chris is a dedicated Asafa fan amidst the Bolt supporters who croweded his shop. This made Chris furious with the crowd as he thought they were ungrateful and unappreciative as Asafa was the original and still the boss in his eyes. This made his audience unsettled as they butted heads with him. He was outnumbered figuratively 50 to 1. The audience chose to outline all the failed attempts of Asafa and his many suspicious injuries. Chris now had to find the inner strength to face the nonbelievers. He outlined that Asafa is more refined and the fastest consistent man in the world. In addition, Asafa is not operating at his optimum best right now. It was truly a sight to behold. Where am I in all of this? Sitting in the barber’s chair with half of a haircut. To a lot of people, the barbershop is just someplace to cut your hair or get it washed. At Mouse Barber located at Bank house Mall, it’s more than that. It is a place to let go and learn what you probably wouldn't learn in the classroom. It’s a community onto itselft; one that is concerned with its members. I know that if I miss the news, I can go there to get a recap and the analysts’ views of it. I think the tagl ine should be:
“Barbershop - come for a haircut, leave with a wealth of information.”

Etta James’ Enduring Soul Album Cover
Imogen Heap’s Ellipse Album Cover
Often times when good stuff comes along, it is taken at face value, It is enjoyed and then simply put aside until needed again. Insufficient research and or thought was not dedicated to it thus one is misses out on a great experience. This has happened in many situations but today I speak of music. New age music rarely pays homage to earlier genres of music such as Classical Souls, Blues, early century R&B and as such, we fail to see the huge impact it has on Pop music and club bangers. In today’s world, a song is characterized by various attributes; some of the more common traits are – song title, a catchy hook/bridge and finally the chorus. The new age in music has evolved so much that it is really hard to be influenced by a specific genre when music is available in mixed genres. Persons seemed to be more appreciative of merged genres thus mashups were born.
IRONIC In this day and age, it is rare to find a person under 40 who have listened to an Etta James CD or Peggy Lee for that matter. Yet their vocals and ad-libs are in your favorite club banger that you know for word, and
24
Nina Simone’s Pastel Blues Album Cover
when asked what made this song to special to you, your reply is the inclusion of music from said artiste. Weird much, I would certainly think so! As music buffs, we should make it a point of duty that if we like/love the song then we should research about the song. Now I am not saying that you should know the track number on the album, how long it is and where the scratches appear and whatnot, no. But know how was the song influenced and what emotions where released during the development of the song, find out where the samples came from if there are any, and why were they used. If the typical person is asked if they know Imogen Heap, they would say no. if asked if they knew how they sound, the answer would be no. Yet, they probably know every word from Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo, where the chorus is a direct sample from Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap.
INFLUENCE It is often said that good things are often imitated or copied, well in this case it is sampled. The first may be the original however, it doesn’t mean that it’s the
best quality. For instance, I Will Always Love You was done by Dolly Parton, but Whitney did a cover, and mixed in her own razzy soul into it and appealed to everyone, so much so, we thought hers was the original. But covers are another story, today we view samples. Nina Simone sang Sinnerman, a song that poured into the hearts of many and landed great success in movies like the Thomas Crown Affairs and Cellular as well as several TV series such as Entourage, Scrubs and Person of Interest. Now a song like this is considered American folklore as she learned the lyrics as a child when her mother, a Methodist minister, used it at revival meetings for persons to confess their sins. Now this song was sampled by Kanye West for Talib Kweli in the song, Get By, Timbaland in the song, Oh Timbaland and Felix da Housecat for the Verve Remixed Series. One song, so much influence.
chorus? Well for me it was the hook! Oh, oh, oh, oh, sometimes I get a good feeling, yeah I get a feeling that I never never, never had before, no no I get a good feeling, yeah! Oh, oh, oh, oh, sometimes I get a good feeling, yeah I get a feeling that I never never, never had before, no no I get a good feeling, yeah! Yes! That did for me in this song, in the verse all I remember is “yes I can” and “I am going to be president one day.” The way he intertwined his vocals with this mesmerizing lady right before the Dub Step premier was simply legendary! Now where did this immortal hook come from? It came from none other than the lovely Etta James. It was sampled from her hit, Something’s Got a Hold On Me. We would like to express our gratitude to Miss Etta James for her long and outstanding contribution to the music industry may her soul rest in peace.
“Oh, oh, oh, oh, sometimes I get a good feeling, yeah I get a feeling that I never never, never had before, no no I get a good feeling, yeah! ”
In the same vein, Peggy Lee’s Fever rolled of the tongues of Madonna and Beyoncé. In Madonna’s case while doing the recording for Goodbye to Innocence the song popped in her head and she started singing it on the track, she liked it so much that she recorded it. Beyoncé on the other hand, loved the song, thus did a recording for the Fighting Temptations Soundtrack.
“We would like to express our gratitude to Miss Etta James for her long and outstanding contribution to the music industry may her soul rest in peace.” This list goes on however, I will just skip to a more recent song, Flo Rida’s Good Feeling. What makes this song a good song? Was it the verse or the hook/

Some other artistes need to be mentioned though they have not yet achieved success in the mainstream despite having such soul and a unique sound. Artistes like Corinne Bailey Rae, often compared to the sparkling Alicia Keys. Corinne Bailey Rae offers a light, yet deep effect on songs; she tends to connect with her audience and delivers a musical journey like no other. So it begs no question why J Cole chose her song “Like A Star” to sample in his premier track bearing the same name. He offered a new twist to the track and a modern feel and vibe.

Dido - Life For Rent Album Cover
The original version of the song, gave off a slow, soul journey along memory lane vibe, however J Cole’s version offers a more upbeat and pumped feeling such as can be compared to a B Boy bounce. Another classical spin that took to the charts, was Eminem’s inclusion of Dido’s “Thank You” in his EP’s number 1 “Stan.” Given the nature of the song, it was a remarkable accompaniment. His brisk wordplay and quick rhymes followed by the mellow, soothing voice of Dido simple set the track apart from the rest by far.
The Isley Brothers

In the bedroom On the bedroom front, things get real interesting as songs geared in this direction had to have pizzazz and an emotional appeal that sometimes bring out that animalistic desire to share the experience with your significant other. This we saw from The Isley Brothers with their single “Between The Sheets.” As the name suggests, this song was written for a specific reason, and as such it became the title track for the group. In 1994, the Notorious Biggy, saw the opportunity to capitalize off this track, when he sampled it in his song “Big Poppa” for his album Ready to Die. The Isley Brother were not strangers to the whole sampling game as soon thereafter they saw Keith Murray sampled “Between The Sheets” on his song “The Most Beautifullest Thing in This World” on his album The Most Beautifullest Thing in This World in 1994, Da Brat sampled “Between The Sheets” on her song “Funkdafied” on her album Funkdafied. In 1994 as well, Aaliyah covered “Choosey Lover” on her album, One In A Million. In 1996 Jay-Z sampled “Ballad For The Fallen Soldier” on his song “A Week Ago” on his album Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life in 1998. All In all, music is music, it has no face, no colour, no race and definitely no barriers; only good quality. We should stop sticking to just what we know and branch out; see what’s out there.
And that’s just to name a few, please educate yourself, even test yourself to see how many of these genres have you actually experienced. Trust me listening a few really doesn’t hurt, and the more you know the more you will see how intricately these music genres are intertwined. Until we meet again, keep your ears to the ground and simply LISTEN! And remember, take time to know the music you listen to and pay homage to the greats who made the music.

NCU Sports Day 2012 By: Fuse
Growing up as a child we all loved the idea of Sports Day, where we get to showcase our athletic skills or even just get to dress up in our best gear. Over the years however, we’ve grown to realize it’s all about winning whether we believe it or not. It’s all about the competition. Northern Caribbean University, built on wholesome, clean Adventist fun, had their annual Sports Day event on the 21st of February 2012, planned and brought to you by the United Student Movement [USM]. Well firstly the turnout was way below last year’s crowd and to me I find it somewhat comforting in the sense that the risk of outside trouble was reduced but in the same breath in terms of support for the event, it was weak. The students from the Kingston Nursing Campus came out to enjoy the day’s festivities and cheer for their respective houses. Well I reached on the campus around 11:30 a.m. just in time to catch the faculty races where I saw the lovely Dr. Beverly Cameron running like there was no tomorrow. As the day progressed Brodie was leading out in front all the way with no sign of falling off the wagon whereas Beaumont was not in the mindset to give up the chase
28
that easily but nevertheless Brodie pushed through with each race. The 100 meter female races were totally dominated by the Brodie and Beaumont females with the Fletcherites and Chisolmites battling it out for third and fourth. The Mascots were the highlights of the day in my opinion; from running races, to creating animosity after the winners from their respective houses crossed the finish line. The males ran outstanding races and this is where all the excitement for Brodie came into play; back to back wins in this event with Fletcher and Beaumont getting wins in between, Chisolm was somewhat out of this day. Lunch time came with Brodie out in front, Beaumont in second place, Fletcher in third and Chisolm in fourth place. MUSIC At this point the Digicel Mobile Music Machine was in full effect blasting hits from Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin to Jason Mighty, Dj Nicholas just to name a few, then suddenly Disco songs started playing but not from the Digicel Machine. I was sort of confused to how the music was being played when someone shouted ‘eh DJ boi lock off
yuh laptop and mek digi play chune’; I could not contain myself as the laughter just jumped out my mouth. There was another so called ‘Sound System’ there that owned the large speaker columns close to the cheerleading stage and they were playing Disco hits, Rhythm & Blues, and a few modern club songs. It would seem that the Digicel DJ found it funny as well and started to play the modern club music and can I tell you, people did get wild to those club songs, hopping on the Digicel truck which had a miniature stage, on the field in a circle dancing and just having good Christian fun.
events ended just to get a good view of the stage where the performances would be taking place. Now the officials decided to give out medals before starting the cheer
TAXI MAN RACE Close to the end of lunch time the announcement was made for the houses to get their relay teams together and meet at the marshaling area for the final races of the day but then another announcement for the taxi men from the NCU to Mandeville route to approach the marshaling area for a ‘Transport Technician Race’. This was something to see with my eyes, seeing that they
event but the crowd decided they would not be having any of it. They started to chant ‘we want cheerleading! we want cheerleading!’ but the officials decided to let the crowd wait for the cheerleading. The people then started to complain about the time, how far they will have to travel after this event is over, they even made suggestions on when to give out the medals. The officials decided that they would start the cheerleading now to calm the crowd save the medal ceremony for another time; the crowd was immensely pleased. Loud cheers rang out with thunderous claps as the MC gave the announcement but the cheerleaders were nowhere to be found. Seeing that they could not find the cheerleaders the mascots decided to put on a show to entertain the crowd which did keep them busy laughing until they got a hold of the cheerleaders.
can drive fast, I suspect they should be able to take to the tracks with their feet and can I tell you, they did not disappoint the fans; they had to run two races reason being the field only had eight lanes and about twelve taxi men turned up to run. The first was won by a strange taxi man that I have never seen before and a few people share the same view as one fellow shouted, ‘mi nuh know him, run ova di race him anuh taxi man him a alien’. Second race was won by a crowd favorite named Kevin who ran as if to say he had Usain Bolt’s blood coursing through his veins.
After the judges got done with the deliberating the scores, Chisolm was found in fourth place, Fletcher in third, Brodie in second and the smashing performance by the Beaumont squad got them first place.
CHEERLEADING At NCU the main feature of every Sports Day is and always will be Cheerleading- it’s all about who will bring it and take home bragging rights for their respective houses for being the best cheer squad on campus. Spectators started to gather at the guard rail way before the track

Supa Hype effects played a very integral role in this mix. You could hear him instructing the ladies to do different things to the mix. It was a job well done to me and a must have in your collection for working out, jogging and any form of exercise, heck you can even practice for the upcoming carnival season with this mix.
DJ Karyzma’s Sweat Mixtape - 4.5 /5
DJ Karyzma’s Sweat Mixtape Cover
L
ast year, I listened to mixtapes from some of the hottest Disc Jocks in Jamaica and so far none can compare to Dj Karyzma’s ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Mixtape. Well this year he is back with another rendition of musical joy and this one was for the ladies. As some of you would realize by now that the carnival season is here and it’s time for the ladies to get wild and soaking wet with sweat. Sweat, the name of Karyma’s latest mix, had people on their seats awaiting the release. As usual nothing about this mixtape is copied, originality would seem to be a great specialty of Karyzma because once again a job well done overall. Since there is no such thing as perfection on this planet there will always be a downside to everything and I found the energy level dropping close to the end of this mix.
Razz & Biggy E-Life Mixtape Cover
Synonymous with greatness the duo which is Razz ‘n’ Biggy has been blessing us with musical selections since 2001. The ‘E-Lifestyle Mixtape’ the latest release from talented duo is hip hop based with a few dancehall remixes wired in to spice it up and a splash of pop music to end the vibe right.
The good outweighs the bad though as the Now the selections were somewhat common
34
in the sense that I’ve heard a large number of mixtapes with the same songs but some of the songs played I have never heard on a mix before and that to me did it all. The common songs were not in the usual order where I could predict the next song before I hear it, which to me again shows a level of originality where selection is concerned and the remixes to go with these songs were also original freestyle remixes from the artistes. Transitions were super clean but I remember hearing one that was a little off but you would have to be listening really close to hear that one mishap plus the vibe level within this mix would cover up that simple slip up. The mix transitioned from the hardcore emcees such as Ludacris, Meek Mill, Drake, Rick Ross just to name a few, to the sensational Beyonce, the awesomeness which is Chris Brown to the sensational Lilly Allen who sang the hook for TPain’s smash hit 5 O’Clock. I must say the Hip Hop segment was a lengthy one but it follows the theme behind the mix nevertheless it was a well put together mixtape but the pop segment was short which left me wanting more. If you’re heading out to a party, this mixtape should be in your collection of mixes to get you pumped.
Razz ‘n’ Biggy’s E-Life Mixtape - 4.8 /5 ‘How yah tek suh long fi change yuh yiy and fawud dawg?’, if you haven’t figured it out as yet I am referring to the ‘Yiy Change Mixtape’ by Chromatic featuring Popcaan. No questions asked Popcaan is the hottest dancehall artiste in the business at this point in time creating massive waves here on our local scene as well as internationally, where I saw Hip Hop’s superstar rapper Drake from Young Money quoting a line from his number one smash hit ‘Only Man She Want’. Also that same song got remixed by Cash Money’s newest addition Busta Rhymes. Sadly we’re not here to talk about Popcaan’s great hits; I’m here to talk about his mixtape.
I was really expecting it to blow me completely away but it failed to do so; frankly to me it was somewhat of a comedy piece since I found it to be more comedic than being lyrical. Don’t get me wrong there were some fresh lyrics in the mix, also a remix for Ace Hood’s Hustle Hard that I found very interesting but mostly the mix was comprised of songs we all knew. These songs that we know were recorded on hip hop beats such as Drake’s Motto, Tyga’s Rack City and Wiz Khalifa’s Young, Wild & Free, but not only were there hip hop beats a couple of old school dancehall beats were used and to me that was creative. The concept of this mixtape was good, well put together where we could actually feel the energy that was in the studio emerging into the mixtape with crazy skits, jokes and just an allround right vibe. This mix had appearances from fellow Gaza member Tommy Lee, Popcaan’s daughter Rihanna and Quick Cook, who did the intro for his smash hit ‘Party Shot’.

Diabetes and You By: Cav
In this issue we’ll focus on diabetes
mellitus, otherwise referred to as diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both. Diabetes mellitus was first identified as a disease associated with "sweet urine," and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine. Normally, blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level. In patients with diabetes, the absence or insufficient production of insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime.
What is the impact of diabetes? Over time, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. These types of damage are the result of damage to small vessels, referred to as microvascular disease. Diabetes is also an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases.
What causes diabetes? Insufficient production of insulin (either absolutely
38
or relative to the body's needs), production of defective insulin (which is uncommon), or the inability of cells to use insulin properly and efficiently leads to hyperglycemia and diabetes. This latter condition affects mostly the cells of muscle and fat tissues, and results in a condition known as "insulin resistance." This is the primary problem in type 2 diabetes. The absolute lack of insulin, usually secondary to a
destructive process affecting the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas, is the main disorder in type 1 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, there also is a steady decline of beta cells that adds to the process of elevated blood sugars. Essentially, if someone is resistant to insulin, the body can, to some degree, increase production of insulin and overcome the level of resistance. After time, if production decreases and insulin cannot be released as vigorously, hyperglycemia develops.
Normal fasting plasma glucose levels are less than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl). Fasting plasma glucose levels of more than 126 mg/dl on two or more tests on different days indicate diabetes. A random blood glucose test can also be used to diagnose diabetes. A blood glucose level of 200 mg/ dl or higher indicates diabetes.
What are diabetes symptoms? • The early symptoms of untreated diabetes are related to elevated blood sugar levels, and loss of glucose in the urine. High amounts of glucose in the urine can cause increased urine output and lead to dehydration. • A relative or absolute insulin deficiency eventually leads to weight loss despite an increase in appetite. • Some untreated diabetes patients also complain of fatigue, nausea and vomiting. • Patients with diabetes are prone to developing infections of the bladder, skin, and vaginal areas. • Fluctuations in blood glucose levels can lead to blurred vision. Extremely elevated glucose levels can lead to lethargy and coma.
How is diabetes diagnosed? The fasting blood glucose (sugar) test is the preferred way to diagnose diabetes. It is easy to per-
form and convenient. After the person has fasted overnight (at least 8 hours), a single sample of blood is drawn and sent to the laboratory for analysis. This can also be done accurately in a doctor's office using a glucose meter.
How is diabetes treated? The major goal in treating diabetes is to minimize any elevation of blood sugar (glucose) without causing abnormally low levels of blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, exercise, and a diabetic diet. Type 2 diabetes is treated first with weight reduction, a diabetic diet, and exercise. When these measures fail to control the elevated blood sugars, oral medications are used. If oral medications are still insufficient, treatment with insulin is considered. Weight reduction and exercise increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin, thus helping to control blood sugar elevations. Adherence to a diabetic diet is an important aspect of controlling elevated blood sugar in patients with diabetes. The diabetic diet is a balanced, nutritious diet that is low in fat, cholesterol, and simple sugars. The total daily calories are evenly divided into three meals. Small amounts of simple sugars are allowed when consumed with a complex meal.

Flurt Wild Cherry By: The Drop Wordz Team We came and we saw lots of cars, seriously cars upon cars upon cars and 1, 2, 3 trucks... Big up youself truck men. However, considering that this is a plaza with approx 50 bars it was hard to associate a party (car or truck) to a specific location. Outside the venue, cliques lingered around and the male to female ratio was about 6:3. Getting through the gate was cumbersome as it was only one way in and out. People bumpedinto each other and caused some traffic but since we pushed on. Due diligence was done at the gate persons were searched and fees had to be paid before entry was awarded. Music found its way outside, and the infamous Alric and Boyd had the partrons mesmerized. They swayed and vibed both on the inside and outside. The phenomenal duo offered a spectacular style of juggling with some real old school hip hop, featuring most of fat man scoop features and premier tracks. As we made our way inside the tunes kept pumping. Alric and Boyd sailed throught 80s Hip Hop to 90s disco then to modern club bangers flawlessly.
gear. There was never a dull moment! Flurt truly blazed, as it differed from most parties hosted in Mandeville. The party actually maintained its vibe of being simply ONE SHOT PARTY! We heard numerous patrons speaking about who they met at the party, in fact we encountered one girl who was giggling profusely saying that she never gave out her number at a party before, but at Flurt she did.
BARS The major bar was inside the mature lounge area, fully stocked and bartenders were on point. The drinks were handled expeditiously and the party people liked that. The roof however was another story as the masses converged on the bar/food area and that caused a problem as gaining access to the bar was a struggle. Eventually, some people lost interest in going to the bar to purchase a drink or to refill their empty cups. The host of the event saw tried to solve the problem by trying to set up another, however, that effort proved futile.
MUSIC We finally graced inside, and man, were we surprised! The decor was chic and classy, with frosted lights, soft hues adding an elegant touch. It did help also that the club was all decked in white. The atmosphere had a mature sense to it but the party was not limited there. Awesomeness cannot be contained. The party extended to the roof. And that's where we headed next. The roof, the roof, the roof, the roof was indeed on fire and burn it did because that's where the party was at, rammed and crammed, the essence of how to party was fully endorsed and experienced. The event was in full
40
The music set would have been flawless except for some minor glitches. Tunes flowed harmoniously and effortlessly from both tables – upstairs and downstairs. When we got there Alric and Boyd were blazing an already lit flame, as mentioned earlier. From there Don Hype took over and carried the vibe and delivered it safely in ZJ Johnny “JKool” Kool’s hands and that’s where pandemonium erupted. Setting himself apart from most other DJs by using CDs instead of laptop/Virtual DJ, JKool took it home. From soul stirring music, to hard hitting hits, alongside short and spicy quips, he had the crowd raving and jumping uncontrollably. Girls could not resist the musical charm and energy of this DJ, he just
mesmerized them with his musical selections. During his set he did encounter a glitch, in which the computer through which he was channeling through went into sleep mode, and minimized the sound quality to a low output. But that did not dampen the spirit of the party nor the DJ, JKool reiterated that “mi nah drop the ketch, a hype dweet, mi nah drop d ketch,” and as such picked up where he was rudely interrupted. The rotation in our eyes could have used more work and more order; if the DJ’s actually listened to each other. In JKool’s second segment he introduced the “rub down” set, where we saw songs like Kelly Rowland’s – Motivation, T-Pain feat Lily Allen – 5 o Clock in the Morning and more along that line. He appealed to the lover in everybody, and everyone responded positively to indeed grab a girl or guy and rub them down.
BOYD’s VIEW Boyd from the duo, Alric and Boyd, commented on the party. In his eyes the party was a complete success, he pointed out that Mandeville need a party like this. And Club 47 was the right place for it to happen. He went further to say, “I like this atmosphere, here we party under the stars.” We asked him more about the party and this is what he had to say. Drop Wordz: How do you find the concept of this party? Boyd: I like the concept of the party offering different dynamics, for a more lounge laid back vibe; you would choose to stay downstairs. DW: Describe the varying vibe between downstairs and upstairs (roof). Boyd: Downstairs has a more mature sense and feel to it versus upstairs is more active, the party is upstairs (roof) no doubt about that. With downstairs it offers a nice place to lyme and have a drink and enjoy the musical set. The roof is purely high energy; a non-stop pulse.
can be low but the crowd will still feel it and love it.
THE PATRONS’ VIEWS Boy: the vibes is the crazy. Upstairs just a shot. Boy: the party a gwaan real good. The vibes upstairs just nice. Girl: party is ok. The energy upstairs is way better than inside. Girl: me love it!!!!!!! Shell!!!!! Boy: the party a say one Boy: the party can gwaan Girl: the party really good. The food nice too. Boy: it shot!!!! And the price is reasonable Boy: The djs them shell it down real hard. Big up JKool!!!! Girl: the party good!!! Me love it Boy: it good. The ladies them nice too, love how the ladies them roll out Boy: the top level vibes tun up. It good!!! Girl: me like it!!! Girl: its ok, can gwaan still. I was just really looking forward to see Konshens Girl: the party shot, it's a good look Girl: a yah so nice. It shot!!! Girl: The party was ok, I was kinda disappointed in Konshens not showing up still
OVERALL Overall the party did have a few glitches but all that was overlooked by a great venue, invirgorating concept, nonstop customer service at the bars, tantalizing smell of jerk chicken and last but definitely not least the AWESOME sets by the DJs: Alric and Boyd, Don Hype alongside Zj Johnny “JKool” Kool. This party contained a colossal amount of energy and the vibe was just right. It went without delay and without altercation to our best knowledge, the only disappointment we heard being murmured was the absence of the featured artiste, Konshens. We greatly anticipate the third staging of Flurt.
DW: Is there anything you would change? Boyd: Firstly, the sound system, I would replace the speakers and strategically place them so we can control the sound more. Whereas with the layout now, we have to blast the sound for people to really feel it and enjoy it. With more speakers and strategic placement the volume

DuJour
The All White Super Inclusive Day Event – Du Jour, was in full swing for February 26, 2012. WiiParty Entertainment, can I just say I must applaud you for the effort, trying to get Mandeville people to party on a Sunday was a very good idea but to me you were going out on a limb there. The sun was down, the evening was cool and the sky was a light shade of grey signaling a slight chance of rain but nevertheless I was on my way. The party flyer said 3 p.m. but knowing Jamaicans that’s a 5 p.m. start in my mind so I made my to the venue with an open mind about how to approach the party seeing it was on a Sunday with a chance of rain. Upon reaching the entrance I could hear DJ Sani spinning songs from the ‘08 time span of dancehall, to me that was a good vibe to be running with that time of the evening. Parking would not be an issue for the commuters who would be driving seeing that the lot was a very spacious area with attendants waiting to show you to your parking spot. After chatting with one of the attendants it was safe to say that the crowd that I thought would be there would stay right there, in my thoughts. Walking to the ticket booth I seriously couldn’t believe I would be walking up that long hill of the Great house, but after getting frisked for weapons, collecting my free Rumfire mug, Mardi Gra beads and free vodka shot, I was told that the shuttle will be taking me up to the venue. Stepping out of the shuttle I decided to take a tour of the venue just to see how the crowd was. What crowd? To my surprise I honestly could count the amount of patrons in the venue. I started to wonder about the success of
42
this event seeing it was so well advertised, WiiParty Entertainment had some very successful events before but this seemed like one of those parties that would just not make it into that list of successful ones. Super All Inclusive event had me thinking, where is the food? Where is the rum? The Rumfire signs just screamed come at me! I walked to the bar to find out what mixture of beverages do they have for me to taste but in terms of variety, the ground level for beverage was pretty simple; Rumfire, Kirov and another blue substance I didn’t get the name of but it was awesome. Making my way upstairs of the Great house, I passed Creep from Chromatic Sound relaxing, sipping on some juice, and just being mellow. Since I’ve heard Chromatic play before I was looking forward to a spectacular night of music but while conversing with a patron about the event, Creep got into a car and left the venue; I figured probably he was heading in
town for something or just going sight-seeing. Upstairs had no clear indication if it was VIP or not so I just walked in to get a view of the setup, interact with the patrons and check out the bar. Now the décor was truly wonderful with colored lights radiating from behind the chairs in the lounge area, white soft cotton chairs and colored Chinese lamps hanging from the ceiling. By this time more and more patrons started to turn out in their white along with a mixture of other colors. Dj Sani was still on the wheels spinning songs to rock the crowd and keep the vibe level on a constant high; Hip Hop, dancehall, disco; he played them all. Hours passed and Dj Absolute from Negril was ready to go! Not dropping the musical ball, his musical selections had me forgetting how poor the turnout was for the event so far. The ball was rolling and rolling well in the favor of Dj Absolute as he got rounds of so called ‘fawud’ from the patrons thrilling us with 90’s Hip Hop to Dancehall, I had to get some more of that Rumfire mix drink. Heading to the bar I passed Illusion Sound from Ocho Rios just arriving looking ready to rip the turntables to pieces, Dj Absolute continued to kill his set leaving the crowd in a frenzy wanting more music. Seeing that Illusion was from Ocho Rios and I have previous knowledge of their juggling, I was so
hoping it wouldn’t be a case of me predicting their selections as I try to do with every Disc Jock or Sound System I listen to, it’s just how I am. Illusion took to the table with great urgency doing the same thing each Dj did before; bring the vibes! Crowd was ready again and they partied to their hearts’ desire sipping on mixed drinks. I can almost guarantee nobody realized that Chromatic wasn’t there due to the fact that the vibe level of this party never dropped one bit. Dj Sani was at it again with what the people wanted but I could predict some of his selections as if to say I’ve heard that specific set before but right when I thought he was going to do his regular mixing, he went soca. Great music was the mode of the night from all the Djs and they did deliver it well. Overall this event would have been a bigger success if more patrons had turned out to support but to me it wasn’t a total loss. WiiParty Entertainment should really put more planning into their venue selections and their dates apart from that I say thumbs up to them and we here at Drop Wordz Magazine endorse their events. This event receives 3 out of 5.

Young Girl Wear Your Size By: Ren These may be the lyrics for an old song but my gosh are those words still appicable today. I don’t know what’s wrong with these females these days. If I had to guess, I would say that some aspects of the US female culture have finally rubbed off on them because they are wearing clothes that are 2 or more sizes smaller than they are.. Now that cant be comfortable.
