Dozens of tributes poured in from around the world yesterday for iconic radio talk-show host Wilmot 'Motty' Perkins, who died early yesterday morning at his St Andrew home after a brief period of illness. Perkins was 80 years old.

Barbara Gloudon, herself a veteran talk-show host and journalist, knew Motty from "back in the day" when they worked together as young reporters at The Gleaner.
"He was part of a group that formed the Journalist Union of Jamaica. Not many people knew of his trade-union activities," she shared. Gloudon noted that in analysing Perkins, most
people spoke of his fearlessness and his very strong convictions, which came out in his writings and conversations on his talk shows.

Veteran photographer Junior Dowie also recalled working with Perkins at The Gleaner in the early 1960s. "He was one of the nicest persons I have ever worked with, very helpful. We have lost an icon," said Dowie.
Perkins later moved back to RJR to host 'Hotline', then 'Straight Talk' on KLAS FM 89, before hosting 'Perkins On Line' on Hot 102 FM. In 2002, he moved 'Perkins On Line' to Power 106 FM, where he remained until his death.
During his tenure at The Gleaner, Perkins served in the capacities of parliamentary reporter, news editor, and columnist.
Outspoken and controversial
The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) lauded Perkins for giving a voice to the voiceless. The association noted that Perkins could be depended on to champion the cause of the oppressed and the victimised at all times.
Perkins was as outspoken and controversial as they come, leading to huge listenership numbers for his radio programmes. He was never afraid to speak his mind, resulting in him being sued 28 times for libel or slander. However, none of these lawsuits was ever tried or settled out of court.
The PAJ said Perkins' influence on development in Jamaica could not be overstated. "Motty was a well-informed, fiery journalist, who was willing to challenge the Establishment and question every statement placed before him," said PAJ President Jenni Campbell. "There is no doubt that the local media landscape will be poorer with the passing of Perkins."
Perkins once said of his programme, which was referred to as the 'thinking persons' call-in show', "If people really think about it, they might discover that 'Perkins On Line' is more profoundly positive than negative." In paying tribute, the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica noted that Perkins embodied the role of a media watchdog, was an advocate for justice, and an unapologetic defender of free speech. "Perkins loved a good argument and remained to the very end unafraid of controversy, always inviting robust debate against the background of his own strongly held political opinions," the commission stated in a release. Born in Portland and a graduate of Calabar High School, Perkins began his career in radio in 1960, hosting the programme 'What's Your Grouse' on RJR. After taking a break from the

sometimes hilarious to actually sit and watch people freak out over one day. They show more effort keeping "face" for that one day than they put into the relationship. Valentine’s Day should not be a day..... It show be a year. But we can’t have that now can we. I move that Valentine’s Day be pushed from the Wednesday to the weekend. Now granted this is a western civilization they are going to disagreements. Well too bad they asked for my view not yours. But in the goodness of my heart let me humor you guys a bit.
Another year once again and we are faced with the troubling question what is Valentine’s Day. Is it a just day or a holiday? Is to be celebrated or just be observed? Many males and females are plagued with this dilemma. But the most famous question of all what gift represents the full extent of your love.
Many make the mistake and think or persuade themselves that love can be bought like a number 5 at burger king, that often the mistake. Women are hymen being, and as such are prone to human nature and contact. speaking to a few females further concretize my point; that we as males often have no clue as to what's going on and what's the ultimate gift - if there even is one. But that not the debate right, what is my interpretation of valentine day. Quite frankly it’s just a day for me, well this year is just Wednesday, regular school and routine. Valentine’s Day is a double sword of sorts. Because, if you celebrate the day, don't you live your significant other the rest of the year? Is it a one-time deal I love you February 14, but like you the other 364. It’s
Let’s say yea Valentine’s Day, oh so awesome gonna treat my partner to an awesome day. Right ain't that the spirit? We gonna go out and have a ball on the town. My question is this, after the ball on the town what happens next? If Valentine’s Day is the only day you choose to put out all the stops, then aren’t you holding out on the relationship? Sad one day is the only day she might actually see the real you, and your creative process. It’s simply logic but I guess that was lost on us in the earlier days also as they often say humans and contradictory species. Guess what's coming up? Valentine's Day! Did you forget? For some of us, Valentine’s Day may prove to be a disastrous one for more reasons than one. It varies from personal experiences to plain dislike for the day itself. Some men conceive the notion that it is not necessary to have an annual special day to demonstrate love for that special individual. Statistics prove that these are the men who are more likely not return a valentine’s day gift, call their respective partners or even worse, disappearing until the season of love has blown over. However, they tend to not realize that females are emotionally driven and feel the need to embrace and encourage the celebration of their overwhelming feelings and love in particular. The failure of a male to reciprocate these feelings or sentiments can lead to a broken relationshp or the end of it. It was Melanie Berliet who stated that, “It’s the thought that counts most”. However, this is only a figure of speech used by many to demonstrate their modesty until they receive a gift they would consider to be "too simple" or "too cheap". There are few things to take into consideration when purchasing the ideal Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone; be aware of her hints. ladies do have the tendency to purposefully hint at their desired gift(s). It is advised that you ensure that you know what he or she likes or would like before purchasing a gift. Let us for a moment move away from the traditional gift of chocolate, roses and a card as we explore the many different, adventurous and exciting ways of making that special someone feel the love that you bare. The worst feeling one can experience on Valentine’s Day is the feeling of disappointment. My word of advice, don’t make promises that you do not plan to fulfill for that special someone espe-

cially on a day like Valentine’s Day. If you should see your lover going "all out" to make you feel special on Valentine’s Day, it won’t hurt to at least make an effort to try and get her something she will appreciate. Let us take the time now to address the "player(s)". It is not wise for you to toy with the emotions of females on the day they recognize to be the most special time of the year to demonstrate love for someone. Make a change and allow someone to feel love on Valentine's Day, being a player places you in a position to be able to afford multiple gifts for different girls which in the end may lead to disaster for you and the lady whose heart you have broken. Stick to that one special female and allow her to feel like she owns the world for the day. Ladies, bear in mind that it takes two to demonstrate love when in a relationship. Move away from the self-centered mindset and remember that the guys are to be treated special and they too can receive a gift on Valentine's Day. Work together to make the day a special one for both of you. Ladies, you will have to pay close attention to the hints given by guys, it never tends to be obvious. Ladies and Gentlemen, stay away from petty arguments, it does nothing for the day and for the plans you have with that special individual, try to fing a solution as soon as possible.

Day by definition is a day observed on February 14th when lovers express their love for each other. Lovers , for most people, refers to a partner in a relationship. So technically, Valentine’s Day is a day for partners in a relationship to express their love for each other. But this day brings a whole lot of questions. For those who get no gifts or “special” treatments…. does this mean your partner doesn’t love you? If your boyfriend doesn’t give you a gift throughout the year & always forgets your birthday or stands you up for dates but gives you a gift for Valentine’s day ……does this mean he loves you? If your girlfriend is constantly cheating on you but gives you a gift on valentine’s day…does this mean she loves you? If this day is meant to celebrate love ….then people should choose their VALENTINE wisely. In other words, by definition, your valentine doesn’t have to be your partner. It should be any person who shows you love….but that just spells trouble. What if I gave a valentine’s day gift to my best friend….who is a male….because I feel he shows me more love than my boyfriend? End of relationship!!!!!!
can bulla. For most persons who received a bulla, they laughed, thinking that someone must have really liked them to even consider sending them a gift (whatever the gift may be). But there was one girl who broke the record!! She was one of the very popular girls who anticipated a romantic day….with her boyfriend sending her a surprise delivery of roses and so forth. And she was right, she got a surprise. She was sitting in class and saw a delivery guy from the school with a gift basket. Her face lit up and she looked around at everyone…making sure everyone noticed. The delivery guy walked up to her with the beautifully arranged, well-decorated basket with red and white bows. He slowly lowered the basket, low enough for all the envious female to peek inside and there it was….a basket of BULLAS!!!! That sent the excitement into overdrive…so much that BULLA & ROSES was cancelled for upcoming years. It is still a mystery where that LOVELY basket came from. I wish I had gotten that basket ….i would have eaten bulla & cheese til mi belly full up!!! On another note, I wonder how cupid would feel if he got shot in the rear with an arrow!!!!
My most vivid memory of valentine’s day was a few years ago while I was attending community college (well technically more than a few years). Bullas and Roses was the order of the day. The idea was that everyone was eligible for a gift…..the person you liked got a rose and the one’s you didn’t like got a bulla. This day always brought excitement to school. There were those relationships that would crumble because some guy decided to send some random girl a rose and upset her boyfriend. There were those relationships that toppled over because a girl got a rose and was disappointed to find out it was not from her boyfriend. However, the real drama was with the good old Jamai-

Pesto Chicken Pasta In the spirit of this season of appreciation for the one you’re with, remembrance for the one you lost (or gave away), and desire for the one you wish you had, called Valentine’s, here’s a recipe that requires little preparation time and promises mouthwatering sumptuousness….
Ingredients • 1/2 pound linguine pasta • 1 (8 ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast, cut into small pieces • salt and ground black pepper to taste • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 6 whole garlic cloves • 4 ounces fresh mushrooms, halved • 6 ounces roasted red peppers,

drained and chopped • 1 (7.5 ounce) jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained and quartered • 3 ounces fresh spinach leaves • 1/4 cup prepared basil pesto, or to taste • 1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided (optional)
Directions 1. Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over
high heat. Once the water is boiling, stir in the linguine, and return to a boil. Cook the pasta uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the pasta has cooked through, but is still firm to the bite, about 11 minutes. Drain well in a colander set in the sink. 2. While the pasta is boiling, sprinkle the chicken with salt and black pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, and cook the
chicken pieces until lightly browned, about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the garlic cloves, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and artichoke hearts; reduce heat to a simmer, and cook until the mushrooms begin to give off their juices, 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in the spinach, and simmer just until the leaves are wilted, about 2 minutes.
3. Transfer the cooked linguine into a bowl, and toss with the basil pesto. Divide the pasta between 2 plates, and serve topped with the chicken mixture. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over each plate to serve. And as an added bonus, here’s a treat of a dessert…..
White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs 3 tablespoons white sugar 1/4 cup butter, melted 1 (10 ounce) package frozen raspberries 2 tablespoons white sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1/2 cup water 2 cups white chocolate chips 1/2 cup half-and-half cream 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4. In a large bowl, mix together cream cheese and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Blend in vanilla and melted white chocolate. Pour half of batter over crust. Spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over batter. Pour remaining cheesecake batter into pan, and again spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over the top. Swirl batter with the tip of a knife to create a marbled effect. 5. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until filling is set. Cool, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 8 hours before removing from pan. Serve with remaining raspberry sauce.
Directions 1. In a medium bowl, mix together cookie crumbs, 3 tablespoons sugar, and melted butter. Press mixture into the bottom of a 9 inch springform pan. 2. In a saucepan, combine raspberries, 2 tablespoons sugar, cornstarch, and water. Bring to boil, and continue boiling 5 minutes, or until sauce is thick. Strain sauce through a mesh strainer to remove seeds. 3. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). In a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, melt white chocolate chips with half-and-half, stirring occasionally until smooth.

Valentine's Wine Picks:
White, Red, Pink, Sweet or Bubbly

The wine media waves are awash with suggestions on
what to gift or drink this Valentine’s Day. Do you like to enjoy a special bottle with your loved ones on this day? Something bubbly to toast the occasion? Something dry to savor with dinner? Or, something sweet to complement a decadent chocolate dessert? Here are some suggestions to cover all the possibilities; there's something for everyone in here! As retailer and marketer campaigns are in full swing on Valentine’s Day wines I am pondering about what makes one wine more Valentine’s Day-friendly than another and how different people might choose different wines. For some reason, most of the marketing and advertising seems to be pink-themed targeted at women. Are men not also the beneficiaries of Valentine’s wines? On Valentine’s Day I love to cook a special dinner. Hence, I generally choose the wines more or less according to

what I am planning to cook. I also like to choose something a bit different. Perhaps something that we haven’t tried before, perhaps something that I know my husband loves but we haven’t tasted in a while, or, maybe just the new vintage of a favorite wine – just some little special detail to mark the occasion.
Sparkling Wines Champagne or *sparkling wine is usually a nice way to start the evening. While I am a die-hard Champagne fan, it is expensive, so it is worth considering other options such as Cava, which I wrote about last week. The Segura Viudas Reserva Hereded at $19, would make an excellent and savvy choice for any Valentine celebration. If you really want something French, but less expensive than Champagne, I would suggest trying some of the Crémant styles from Alsace, Burgundy or the Jura. I
have been particularly impressed by some Crémant de Jura wines tasted lately. One such is Domaine Hubert Clavelin Brut-Comté Crémant du Jura Chardonnay NV and at $20 it is not just tasty, it is another savvy buy. Dry Rosé Wines I usually don’t start my rosé consumption until about April, when the new releases are generally available. However, I know that there are many who love to drink pink for Valentine’s day. My only word of caution – make sure you choose a wine that was made to last more than a year – as many rosé wines are made to be consumed within about six months of release. Here are two that I heartily recommend. First up is the 2000 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Gran Reserva Rosado Rioja $24. No, the year 2000 is not a typo, this is the current release of this wine. It is truly a rosé like no other. This wine is aged for four years in American oak, and further bottle aged before being released. Therefore it is driven by a multitude of wonderful complex tertiary aromas and flavors rather than youthful primary fruit. Not everyone’s cup of tea but if you want to try a truly unique, aged, age-worthy rosé then this Gran Reserva is for you. If you would prefer something more typical I would suggest the 2009 Terre Nere Etna Rosato from Sicily, $17. I am a big fan of all the Terre Nere wines and this rosé is no exception. It is fairly full-bodied, rich and well structured. Not fruit driven but it has lots of plummy, dried cherry and wild red fruit flavors against a savory, earthy backdrop.
White Wines The weather is still so cold, so I am looking for a more fullbodied, richer white wine. Over the holidays my husband made a request for ‘white Rhône’ – so I bought the 2008 Alain Graillot White Crozes Hermitage. Made from Marsanne, this wine is unoaked and delightfully refreshing, yet is richly textured with great breadth and depth of flavor. It is a bit on the expensive side at $32, but worth it if you are looking for a special and different white.
Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Warming, spicy, juicy and smooth with hints of smoke, leather, game and earth. I see a nice beef or venison stew on my horizon. Back to the old world and France, I recently came across the 2006 Chateau Montus from the Madiran appellation in South West France, $27. This is a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Fairly medium bodied with nice firmish tannins. Lots of ripe, earthy black fruit flavors, spices and hints of smoke.
Dessert Wines It is time for that ‘decadent’ chocolate pudding or soufflé that you’ve been waiting for. I am thinking of the ‘Soft Chocolate Mini Cakes’ dessert from Sara Kate’s new cookbook, which she cooked for us last week-end. We enjoyed it with a deliciously sweet Blandy’s 5 Year old Malmsey Madeira. While a bottle of Madeira can be pricey, it is pretty much indestructible and will last forever, even when opened. The sweeter Madeira wines have a particular affinity with chocolate. Alternatively I would go for a red VDN (Vin Doux Naturel) such as Banyuls or Maury or if you prefer something from the US, how about a late harvest Zinfandel from California. Two delicious examples that I have tasted this year are from Dashe Cellars (the 2008 Late Harvest Zinfandel costs $24 for a half bottle) and Rosenblum Cellars (their 2007 Désirée Chocolate wine, which is a blend of mostly Zinfandel with some Touriga Nacional costs $20 / half bottle). Both will pair wonderfully with rich chocolate deserts. These are but a few suggestions, intended just as a guide, to help you navigate the sea of wine choices being marketed for Valentine’s Day. Another excellent option is the 2009 Decoy, Sonoma County Chardonnay, $20. This wine is deliciously bright and crisp with a small amount of well-integrated oak adding subtle hints of vanilla and spice. Delightful texture on the palate, rich but not heavy and well balanced with the core of lively fruit. An excellent example of the more restrained Chardonnays now coming out of California.
Red Wines It is February, we are still in the depths of winter, so I am likely to cook something heartwarming, requiring a hearty red – maybe a blend, something spicy and ‘Rhone’ like perhaps? On my shortlist are the 2006 Bonny Doon “Le Cigare Volant” from California, $26. This is a delicious blend of

However, when it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day, tradition still trumps tech. …… (or so they say). Nothing says love like tech. Why waste your money on roses that wilt or chocolate that's eaten and forgotten? If you're looking for a romantic gift that says you care, look no farther than tech. Tech gifts endure, at least until they're made obsolete by the next "latest and greatest." Now that we've got you started on thinking about Valentine's Day, it's time to think about the perfect present. And what's better than a Valentine's Day gift which your partner will really like? A Valentine's Day gift that you can use as well! Besides using it together, these gifts can also help tide over the lonely days (and nights) when the both of you are apart. The only problem we foresee is that there may be disagreements over who gets to keep the present.

Alternative Rock (Rockative) Alternative rock (also called alternative music, alt rock
or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music and a term used to describe a diverse musical movement that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular by the 1990s. Alternative rock is a broad umbrella term consisting of music that differs greatly in terms of its sound, its social context and its regional roots. By the end of the 1980s, magazines and zines, college radio airplay and word of mouth had increased the prominence and highlighted the diversity of alternative rock, helping to define a number of distinct scenes such as gothic rock, jangle pop, noise pop, C86, Madchester, industrial music and shoegazing. Most of these subgenres had achieved minor mainstream notice and a few bands representing them, such as Hüsker Dü and R.E.M., had even signed to major labels. But most alternative bands' commercial success was limited in comparison to other genres of rock and pop music at the time, and most acts remained signed to independent labels and received relatively little attention from mainstream radio, television or newspapers. In the US, punk itself had also failed to find wide mainstream recognition, which the genre had briefly achieved in Britain. Instead, underground US bands in the early 1980s developed an uncompromising and noncommercial style of hardcore punk, which influenced the lo fi sound of much US alternative rock significantly. Some examples of alternative rock bands that have achieved commercial success and mainstream critical recognition are R.E.M., The Smiths, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Coldplay and Muse. Music With Soul Now a lot of people say ‘oh they love soul music and it
the foundation of love songs’, but it’s actually an off shoot. Soul music has its roots in gospel music and rhythm and blues. The hard gospel vocal quartets of the 1940s and 1950s were big influences on major soul singers of the 1960s. The term "soul music" itself, to describe gospelstyle music with secular lyrics, is first attested in 1961. Ray Charles is often cited as inventing the soul genre with his string of hits starting with 1954's "I Got a Woman". Charles was open in acknowledging the influence of Pilgrim Travelers vocalist Jesse Whitaker on his singing style. Another view has it that a decade would transpire until Solomon Burke's early recordings for Atlantic Records codified the soul style; his early 1960s songs "Cry to Me", "Just Out of Reach" and "Down in the Valley" are considered classics of the genre. Little Richard (who was the inspiration for Otis Redding), Fats Domino and James Brown originally called themselves rock and roll performers. However, as rock music moved away from its R&B roots in the 1960s, Brown claimed that he had always really been an R&B singer. Little Richard proclaimed himself the "King of Rockin' and Rollin', rhythm and blues Soulin'", because his music embodied elements of all three, and because he inspired artists in all three genres. Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke are also often acknowledged as soul forefathers. Aretha Franklin's 1967 recordings, such as "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", "Respect" (originally sung by Otis Redding), and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" (written by Chips Momanand Dan Penn), are considered the apogee of the soul genre, and were among its most commercially successful productions. In the late 1960s, Stax artists such as Redding, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pick
ett, and Johnnie Taylor made significant contributions to soul music. Howard Tate's recordings in the late 1960s for Verve Records, and later for Atlantic (produced byJerry Ragovoy) are another notable body of work in the soul genre. By 1968, the soul music movement had begun to splinter, as artists such as James Brown and Sly & the Family Stone began to incorporate new styles into their music. From what I’ve gathered from my research into this genre, it’s all about grown folks business so I would say it is grown folks music. These days the word love is being tossed around by any human with a mouth that works, but how many actually know what it means? These soul artistes knew about love, all its ups and downs, all the perks, and what to do when it seems to be going wrong. Its Valentine’s month and I would like to recommend some songs for the folks who really and truly appreciate music. Rhythm and Blues [R & B] Depending on where you were brought up as a child your musical choice will vary, but I know for a fact that every 90s child would have been exposed to the soft, calm and peaceful genre of R & B. Rhythm and blues [R & B] is a genre of popular African American music that originated in the 1940s. The term was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular. The term has subsequently had a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s, the term rhythm and blues was frequently applied to blues records. Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used
music, and similar music by white artists was labeled blue eyed soul. Motown Records had its first million-selling single in 1960 with The Miracles' "Shop Around", and in 1961, Stax Records had its first hit with Carla Thomas' "Gee Whiz! (Look at His Eyes)". Stax's next major hit, the Mar-Keys' instrumental "Last Night" (also released in 1961) introduced the rawer Memphis soul sound for which Stax became known. In Jamaica, R&B influenced the development of ska. This is the genre most, if not all of you would be familiar with, seeing that at some point growing up we all went to weddings. From the sensational Whitney Houston to the lovely Alicia Keys, we’ve all been in contact with their works which will forever be good music to lovers out there. Reggae Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rock steady.

Reggae is most easily recognized by the rhythmic accents on the off-beat, usually played by guitar or piano (or both), known as the skank. This pattern accents the second and fourth beat in each bar (or the "and"s of each beat depending on how the music is counted) and combines with the drums emphasis on beat three to create a unique feel and sense of phrasing in contrast to most other popular
genres focus on beat one, the "downbeat". The tempo of reggae is usually felt as slower than the popular Jamaican forms, ska and rocksteady, which preceded it. It is this slower tempo, the guitar/piano offbeat, the emphasis on the third beat, and the use of syncopated, melodic bass lines that differentiates reggae from other music, although other musical styles have incorporated some of these innovations separately. Reggae developed from ska, mento and R&B music in the 1960s. The shift from rocksteady to reggae was illustrated by the organ shuffle, which was pioneered by Jamaican musicians like Jackie Mittoo and Winston Wright. This new technique was featured in the transitional singles "Say What You're Saying" (1967) by Clancy Eccles, and "People Funny Boy" (1968) by Lee "Scratch" Perry. The Pioneers' 1967 track "Long Shot Bus' Me Bet" has been identified as the earliest recorded example of the new rhythm sound that became known as reggae. Early 1968, was when the first genuine reggae records were released: "Nanny Goat" by Larry Marshall and "No More Heartaches" by The Beltones. American artist Johnny Nash's 1968 hit "Hold Me Tight" has been credited with first putting reggae in the American listener charts. Around that time, reggae influences were starting to surface in rock music. An example of a rock song featuring a slight taste of reggae rhythm is 1968's "Ob-La-Di, Ob-LaDa" by The Beatles. The Wailers, a band started by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1963, are perhaps the most recognised band that made the transition through all three stages of early Jamaican popular music: ska, rocksteady and reggae. Other significant reggae pioneers include Prince Buster, Desmond Dekkerand Ken Boothe. Notable Jamaican producers who were influential in the development of ska into rocksteady and reggae include: Coxsone Dodd, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Leslie Kong, Duke Reid, Joe Gibbs and King Tubby. Chris Blackwell, who founded Island Records in Jamaica in 1960, relocated to England in 1962, where he continued to promote Jamaican music. He formed a partnership with Trojan Records, founded by Lee Gopthal in 1968. Trojan released recordings by reggae artists in the UK until 1974, when Saga bought the label. The 1972 film ‘The Harder They Come’, starring Jimmy Cliff, generated considerable interest and popularity for reggae in the United States, and Eric Clapton's 1974 cover of the Bob Marley song "I Shot the Sheriff" helped bring reggae into the mainstream. By the mid-1970s, reggae was getting radio play in the UK on John Peel's radio show, and Peel continued to play reggae on his show throughout his career. What is called the "Golden Age of Reggae" corresponds roughly to the heyday of roots reggae. Our beloved Reggae then gave birth to some other genres in our society today such as Dancehall, Raggamuffin, Reggaeton, Reggae fusion. Some people call it Reggae,
some say Culture but at the end of the day it still carries the same meaning over the years and the concept has not changed. From Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff to Chris Martin, Gyptian, Romain Virgo and so many more talented reggae artistes today, this music will live on and forever be ours – product of Jamaica. Another study published in the same journal found that frequent intercourse was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure in cohabiting participants. Yet other research found a link between partner hugs and lower blood pressure in women.

Sex Burns Calories Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. It may not sound like much, but it adds up: 42 half-hour sessions will burn 3,570 calories, more than enough to lose a pound. Doubling up, you could drop that pound in 21 hour-long sessions. "Sex is a great mode of exercise," says Patti Britton, PhD, a Los Angeles sexologist and president of the American Association of Sexuality Educators and Therapists. It takes work, from both a physical and psychological perspective, to do it well, she says.
Sex Improves Heart Health While some older folks may worry that the efforts expended during sex could cause a stroke, that's not so, according to researchers from England. In a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, scientists found frequency of sex was not associated with stroke in the 914 men they followed for 20 years. And the heart health benefits of sex don't end there. The researchers also found that having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of fatal heart attack by half for the men, compared with those who had sex less than once a month.

"One of the reasons people say they have sex is to feel good about themselves," she tells WebMD. "Great sex begins with self-esteem, and it raises it. College Access: The anticipation for College Acess: Age of the Nerd was high! People came in their numbers by car, van and even scooters. Parking was congested, and the flow of traffic moved at a snail with drivers scurrying for a spot when one became available as they were in limited supply. Based from the outside, the male to female ratio proved satisfactory; approximately 4 males to 3 females. Even on the outside the audience swayed, sung and partied. The selection by (Dj Wayne) really had the crowd going. Security was tight, and entry and exit followed the proper protocol. Upon entry, the venue proved inadequate to facilitate its patrons, like the slave ship from Africa to Caribbean, it was CRAMMED! Persons complained about the lack of movement and the heat. With such elements and dancing, whining, rocking etc, it’s a definite recipe for someone to pass out. Thus far, 3 persons have vomited and by our expectations more will follow the trend. It was problematic to get to the main dance floor or the main area. Decor proved useful, unlike the last party, strobe lights improved and uplifted the otherwise dull house. Disco balls and light runners proved to uplift the spirits and unleash the inner freak. You almost had to ask yourself were you at a Rave or college party? Funny, the male to female ratio outside the venue was completely altered. Females started to dominate the event, It’s been a while since we saw more females than males at a party. We asked one patron, why she wasn't inside, her response "mi not baking cake or pudding." Again we stress, the phrase 'packed like sardines" had nothing on College Access. The juggling from the selectors seemed distorted; the vibe was on a high and waaaaaay down low, symbolizing a heartbeat monitor. Genre jumps were drastic,

from reggae to alternative, with no linkage to warrant the selected "mix". On the bar front, liquor was out shortly after we arrived, not before cups however. Liquor, was there until cups took a vacation and rum punch became the drink of the night. Consulting the promoter as to why cups and liquor were finished, he commented that this crowd was unexpected and he's completely taken aback by the turn out. Amongst the patrons, we found ourselves in the presence of some of NCU finest - its security forces, along with some movers and shakers of the NCU community. A slight altercation at the gate, threatened to disrupt the party but that was soon resolved and the party continued to maximize its potential. All in all the party was a success. There are few problems to be addressed though; venue was too small and smokers need a smoking area as breathing was congested within the venue. We here at Drop Wordz give College Access “Age of the Nerd” a 3.5 out of 5.

The College Xperience (TCX): J.A.N.U.S. TCX is no stranger to Drop Wordz Magazine as only a few weeks ago it was featured in one of our publications. Well on February, 4th, TCX hosted their first event for the new year, JANUS. JANUS featured the first of the new TCX that promotes a more exclusive atmosphere. When I arrived, the party should have been in full swing but there was only a small number of patrons sitting around or standing outside. There were no real evidence of decor besides a few coloured bulbs. The dancefloor was empty though the DJ was playing. It seemed TCX had not transitioned that much after all. After a while, a few more persons came and the party vibes started to pick up. The DJs played some mixes that were sure to get everyone dancing ranging from old hits of all to new ones from all genres. The patrons could not resist and converged on the dance floor. The mood was set then it died down after a while when patrons got too hot as the two windows weren't providing enough ventilation.

But behold, some patrons were not having this complaint as they had GOLD MEMBERSHIP. Gold Members were being served apple martinis and eating finger food upstairs. One of the promoters, told Drop Wordz that Gold Membership was awarded to those that have been supporting TCX since its inception. New patrons have the option of becoming new members too. After they've pledged TCX, if they attend a certain number of events then they will be awarded Gold Membership. TCX was previously a party for a group of friends and acquaintances who partied together but now it has become something akin to a fraternity. Will it survive this transition? Only time will tell but Drop Wordz gives TCX: JANUS a 2 out of 5. The DJs may have built some vibes but that's about all that was great at this party.
