REPORTS

PRESIDENT’S REPORT I am proud to welcome you to another edition of the Droughtmaster Magazine. This edition follows and contains numerous reports on our extremely positive presence at Beef 2021, Rockhampton. Up front, I would like to once again thank everyone who contributed and participated in making the Droughtmaster precinct the success that it was. Yet again, the Droughtmaster breed had the largest numbers in the stud competition and had huge success in the commercial competition as well. The overall presence of the breed at Beef 2021 should be interpreted by the membership as reflecting a shift in culture, activity and initiatives toward promoting our Droughtmaster cattle as Australia’s natural wonder. One of the many initiatives attached to Beef 2021 was the Droughtmaster Research and Education Foundation Bursary project, allowing two youth an opportunity to attend Beef, assist in the presentation of stud cattle and attend events or tours of interest. This initiative was considered a great success, and further highlighted the importance of new membership and youth to our breed. Whenever you look around at the Droughtmaster footprint at Beef or other show events, the kids of Droughtmaster families, our Next Gen Committee (and their “trucker caps”), or other youth, are everywhere. Their sense of positivity, optimism and interest in the breed augers well for the industry and the breed into the future.

Todd Heyman | President

Over the first half of 2021, we have also started to see the industry and market realise the true value of the Droughtmaster female. The results of the Droughtmaster National Female Sale and other heifer auction results since have been sensational. Resilient, fertile, and productive, our Droughtmaster females - the best mothers in the Australian beef industry - are starting to gain even more of the value and recognition that they deserve. As we head towards the forthcoming spring sales, I would like to wish members putting forward cattle all the very best and urge anyone reading this piece to get along to this year’s sales to have a look. From the early promotion on this year’s draft, the private and Sponsored Sales will present buyers with a great range of bulls to choose from. As the national herd continues to rebuild, it is an ideal time for producers to use Droughtmaster bulls in their programs. From docility and adaptability to fertility and carcase yield, the Droughtmaster’s natural traits underpin its wonderful reputation as an allrounder that can cater for all market needs. Again, and as always, I thank our staff, volunteers and members for their contribution to breed initiatives and the part you all play in progressing the Droughtmaster breed – Australia’s natural wonder.

REPORTS

CEO’s REPORT It has also been a busy period for our members who have been exhibiting at field days and shows around the country – flying the Droughtmaster flag and showcasing the breed’s best genetics. Well done to all involved. Internally it has been equally as busy with staff focusing on the following projects below:

• Installation of the new DNA module • Formulation and approval of the budget the pricing and • Negotiating contracts with DNA providers Tinka Consulting as an outsourced • On-boarding model following the resignation of our bookkeeper audit process and distribution • Annual of the Annual Report and negotiation for the delivery • Preparation of the Droughtmaster Magazine • Automation of Society Sponsored Sale process • Recruiting and on-boarding of a new trainee • Consideration and review of the business model • Preparing grant proposals and securing funding

Following our team session in November 2020, we are making a concerted effort to improve efficiency and productivity within the office and the above-mentioned projects will assist with that commitment. We are also about to go through a process of cleaning up the office and reconfiguration to improve efficiency.

Simon Gleeson | Chief Executive Officer AS I WRITE this report, I have just heard that there has been very good widespread rainfall across the Central Queensland Region - this is great news. As I understand, many of our members in this area had missed out on good rainfall earlier in the year. I hope other Zones throughout Australia have also received decent rainfall following the devastating drought of previous seasons.

While all of us felt a little fatigued after Beef Australia 2021, the team came off a high from the event. It was a very successful event, and the Droughtmaster Precinct really showcased the breed at one of the major promotional events in the beef industry. Congratulations must go to the Beef Committee, members who participated and volunteered and all the staff at Droughtmaster Australia for such a great spectacle.

• Gatton Futurity • Launch of Droughtie Lager National Female Sale • • Northern Beef Producer’s Expo Beef 2021 • • Farmfest

It is now coming up to two years since we implemented the Strategic Plan (late 2019) and we are still tracking well. For the past 18 months we have focused on phase 1 of the plan, “Building A Solid Foundation” and by the end of the year we will be looking to transition to phase 2 of the plan, “Delivering Consistently Well”. I would encourage all members to refer to the Strategic Plan which is located on the website for further information.

All of these events have been well publicised and have really presented the breed in a positive light. They have also contributed to us fielding numerous membership enquiries and members registering additional animals.

As we enter bull sale season, the workload in the office really ramps up. We are looking forward to another successful sale season and hope to catch up with you all at the sales.

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the last 8 months for the Society. In terms of sales and events it has been extremely busy so far with the organisation and coordination of the following activities:

ADVERTORIAL

Customer evaluation paramount to Glenlands Charlie Hawkins, Herbertvale Station, Camooweal

“We’ve used Glenlands bulls for 36 years, exclusively for the last 18 years. The Childs family make buying bulls easy. Their knowledge of body type, qualities, requirements for today’s markets, expertise in blending genetics and fertility are unquestionable. Our 180 bulls pass through the yard twice yearly. The growth, temperament, sheath quality and doing ability are exemplary, making longevity a major factor in returning to Glenlands annually.”

Dean Keirnan, Bygana, Clermont

“We seasonally mate our herd. We select bulls that produce for us physically in the paddock, docile temperament, that handle well in the yards or the open. Having purchased bulls on farm and at the annual sales, we’re impressed with the length and bone put back into the calves, but also the temperament of our herd. These bulls get the job done, they let down well in the paddock, will walk out with the herd and are great to handle in our seasonal operation.”

Ray Jansen, Seamark Pty Ltd., Cliffdale, Theodore

“Seamark join 2000 heifers and 8000-9000 breeders annually. Ninety percent of our bulls are from Glenlands. We’ve now bought 330 Glenlands bulls and their progeny definitely provide us with a premium, their progeny are always in high demand. Our properties stretch from Nebo to the coast and south of Moura. These bulls and their progeny provide us with fertility, performance, market suitability, the certainty and environmental adaptability we require.”

John Cotter, Kinbombi Station, Goomeri

“Their genetics provide us with a huge selection base and a massive cow herd. We breed for prime cattle (grass or grainfed), MSA and Jap Ox. MSA steers sired by Glenlands bulls awarded Kinbombi one of the top 100 MSA Producers for Queensland and the NT.”

John Baker, Booroondarra, Middelmount

“We’ve used Glenlands genetics for 31 years. Their ‘Tropically Adapted Flatbacks’ perform really well, they handle the dry, are tick resistant and fertile. Our steers perform equally well on grass, forage crop, Leucaena or grain and grade well as 300kg plus Jap Ox. If dry weather forces us to sell off the surplus they always attract strong interest.”

Fred Noffke, Keronga, Springsure

“Glenlands bulls continue to work and have no trouble attaining mature weights of between 1000 - 1200 kg while they’re working. They produce the type and fleshing I require. Their bulls are like a good bottle of scotch, it’s only a matter of time before you give in and one will never be enough.”

Andrew Delforce, Meatant Cattle, Newcome, Augathella

“Meatant Cattle have been using Glenlands bulls for over 15 years. Our herd is totally Glenlands blood. The bulls acclimatize well, join efficiently, handle their cows and environment. They’re rugged and recuperate quickly. The progeny of these bulls meet their target weights and specs off grass with a group of 130 milk tooth Glenlands blood steers recently posting an average daily gain of 1.4kg/day off grass.”

TOP QUOTES

FROM JUDGE GLEN WALDRON

On Calf Champion Male, Glenlands D Call of Duty: “I really loved the length of body in this bull. When you get in behind him, he’s got adequate thickness, a good set of testicles and he travels well on a good set of feet.”

On Reserve Calf Champion Male, Seymour Mort: “He’s got a strong sirey head for such a young calf. He’s got a long body and the tidiest sheath we’ve seen on a calf today. I tip he’ll have a big future on the show circuit this time next year.”

On Calf Champion Female, Rondel Bree: “The one I’ve put out in front today exhibits a wonderful breed character. I love her neck extension and balance and the femininity of this female.”

On Reserve Calf Champion Female, Glenlands D Centrefold: “All the females in front of me are very similar in type, but the reserve is a strong, still feminine female that will be responsible for breeding the next generation of stud and commercial sires.”

On Junior Champion Male, Farogan Valley Mojo:

heart room as the bull I had in top place. But I really liked his breed character. He’s a long-bodied bull with a 129 EMA, but he’s smooth as silk and moves well.

On Senior Champion Female, Glenlands D Bellevue:

On Junior Champion Female, Rondel Angel: “She has soft skin and she’s adequately clean underneath, but plenty of looseness left in her. When you get in behind her, she has great alignment through her hip to pin structure and just the way she walks oozes smoothness and femininity. She’s just got volume and capacity, all the way from the front end to the back end, great teat placement, well and truly in-calf and knocking on the door of production.”

On Reserve Junior Champion Female, Glenlands D Cleo: “You have to hand it to the reserve for her volume and capacity, she’s got plenty of depth and quarter to her and she’s going to be one heck of a bull producer for her relevant stud owners.”

On Senior Champion Bull, Glenlands D Banjo: “I really like his balance, strength of head and his overall sire appeal.”

“The junior champion really epitomises where we need to be in the breed and the industry. He has enough weight-for-age, tremendous carcase and a tidy sheath and wonderful set of testicles – a real sire in the making.”

On Reserve Junior Champion Male, Glenlands J Comrade: “He has tremendous capacity and overall balance but probably not as much depth in the chest and

age carcase, but with the ability to finish for multiple markets, which is exactly what the Australian cattle industry needs from its bulls.”

On Reserve Senior Champion Bull, Glenlands Bateman: “You have to love the angle of his tidy sheath and the overall cleanness through the front end. “The industry is in very good hands with sires of this calibre joining the ranks. I’m very happy to say that these bulls are exactly what the industry needs – they are structurally correct, reproductively sound and plenty of weight-for-

“The lead female has plenty of volume in the front end, and a little bit squarer when you get behind her. She’s a great mover.”

On Reserve Senior Champion Female, Rondel Whiskey Girl: “She’s going to be a cornerstone female for the stud in the future.” “Just an absolute credit to the Droughtmaster breed to have two females of this calibre come out to fight for the senior female championship.”

On Grand Champion Female, Glenlands D Bellevue: “She’s a relatively young female, with a tremendous amount of growth and length, a beautiful front end and neck extension. She walks on a good set of legs and feet and a well-balanced dimension through her middle third and high third. A wonderful female that I can’t go past.”

On Grand Champion Male, Farogan Valley Mojo: “He really carries himself well given the weight of him and really has a good set-up on his hind leg structure. His length of body is impressive and he’s a smooth walker and that makes him an ideal candidate for his stud duties to go over the more moderate framed cows. He’s very well balanced, right through the pins and possesses a wonderful set of testicles. He has the set-up to take the breed into the future.”

BEEF 2021 REPORT

GIRL POWER: DROUGHTMASTER FEMALES PARADE THEIR INFLUENCE AT BEEF AUSTRALIA At a time when commercial beef producers have herd rebuilding on their minds, the influence of Droughtmaster females at this year’s Beef Australia was as timely as it was profound. By Brad Cooper A WORLD champion Droughtmaster female still producing blossoming calves for her stud owners in southern Queensland has left her imprint on beef ’s biggest stage three years after exiting the showring. At Beef Australia 2018, it was Farogan Valley Aura judged as the breed’s grand champion female. At this year’s Beef Australia, it was her son, Farogan Valley Mojo, walking away with the grand champion honours among the bulls. Of the 169 Droughtmaster bulls exhibited at Beef – the biggest catalogued among any breed at the Rockhampton Showgrounds – Mojo was the sole flag bearer for his stud breeders Nick and Sarah Hughes, of Farogan Valley Droughtmasters at Upper Kandanga, near Gympie in southern Queensland. But he came with good credentials, following in the footsteps of his champion mother who was also Farogan Valley’s sole exhibit when she strolled onto Rockhampton’s centre ring three years ago.

Talk about the power of one, although Nick Hughes is more of the opinion that it’s part necessity and partly reflective of their stud’s operational and marketing direction. “We just don’t have that depth among our breeding herd, especially since 2019 when we were knocked around by drought and bushfires, which caused further reductions in our breeder numbers,” he said. “But in many respects, we’ve always seen ourselves as something of a boutique stud, producing elite performance animals for the stud cattle industry that can be available at any time when producers need them in their paddocks.” If the Farogan Valley team of one represented boutique, then the contest on May 5 – dubbed Droughtmaster Day by some due to the sheer weight of numbers in the ring – was also a David and Goliath tussle, a meeting of the minnow against the behemoth of Bouldercombe – the Glenlands Droughtmaster stud, a stone’s throw from Rockhampton. Of the 169 exhibits in front of Meandarra judge Glen Waldron and his associate Jack Peart, of

Beaudesert, the Glenlands show team accounted for 23 head. Of the major ribbons presented that day, eight were claimed by Glenlands, starting with the grand champion and senior champion female, Glenlands D Bellevue, a daughter of Glenlands Remington. The stud, operated by brothers Darren and Jason Childs and their respective families, also claimed top honours in the exhibitors group. Breeders of a former Beef Australia male interbreed winner – Glenlands Prince in 2012 – Glenlands’ scale and reputation is more exhilarating than intimidating, according to Nick Hughes. “Glenlands do very well because they have such a lovely herd and such depth to choose from,” he said. “It’s very gratifying just to be in the ring with those guys and to be competitive.” Farogan Valley was not alone in sharing some of the Beef Australia spoils on offer. The Carrington family’s Rondel stud, from Winton, produced three champion females on the day

into the Beefmaster/Droughtmaster World Championship, judged online from the US in Fort Worth, Texas.

They then returned to the ring to win the breeders group.

There were two calves produced from that union – a bull that Nick and Sarah Hughes named Chief and a female they named Aura.

It was a sign of further greatness to come.

Moving through the Africa and Asia divisions and then the North America and South America regions, she was crowned ‘Miss World’ in December 2018.

The brother and sister duo went as a team to the 2017 Gympie Droughtmaster Feature Show, where they both claimed the junior bull and junior cow sashes respectively, before both then progressing to grand champion male and female.

A year later, Chief was retired for stud duties but Aura continued in the show ring, eventually sauntering onto stud beef ’s biggest stage at Beef Australia where she claimed grand champion Droughtmaster female and supreme champion female in the interbreed.

She was retired from showing in 2019 and entered into Farogan Valley’s IVF program.

But she hadn’t finished winning. Later that year she was entered

BEEF 2021 REPORT in a field otherwise completely dominated by Glenlands. Among the bulls, Seymour Droughtmasters, at Gunalda, also near Gympie, was the only other stud prefix to join Farogan Valley in stopping a Glenlands clean-sweep. While delighted with the result, Darren Childs believes the biggest winner from Beef Australia remains the Droughtmaster breed, especially the form exhibited by the female portion of the catalogue. “The quality of the females across the board was a credit to the breed – certainly a long way ahead of any showing I’ve been to,” he said. “We put a lot of emphasis on our cow herd – it’s the heart of our operation. “It does speak volumes for the breed that those maternal attributes are displayed so prominently, which means when commercial producers come looking for breeders they know where to find them.” Droughtmaster Australia president Todd Heyman agrees with Darren Childs’ assessment, and asserts the momentum towards commercially focused females – or ‘industry relevant cattle’ as frequently described by Glen Waldron – is the result of the breed society’s strategic intent to link quality genetics with real-world performance in the paddock. Judges of the Commercial Cattle Championships at Beef Australia were also observing the link between breed direction and industry relevance. Cliff Mylrea’s Needmor Cattle Co, at Gogango in Central Queensland

claimed the champion pen of lot-fed heifers, as well as the champion pen of crop or pasture-fed steers. Weighing an average of 541.5kg, the Droughtmaster-cross heifers were HGP treated and fed for 123 days, while the HGP-treated Droughtmaster steers weighed an average of 628.5kg. Cliff Mylrea told Queensland Country Life that the competition was a great platform to showcase the versatility of the Droughtmaster breed. “The steers are just purebred Droughtmaster and we like to promote the pure Droughtmaster because it’s good for our breed and for the bulls we sell,” he said. “The heifers are Droughtmaster/ Limousin-cross and we like them because it shows people the Droughtmaster females are a good crossbred. “You can do anything with them and put whatever you like over them, the Euro is ideal, but the Droughtmaster female a lot of times is overlooked and underrated, but they’re a beautiful animal to crossbreed with.” Speaking to Droughtmaster Magazine ringside at Beef during judging, Todd Heyman said the proof was in Droughtmaster’s increased take-up through many extensive commercial operations through northern Australia coupled with expansion into the southern pastoral zones of NSW, Victoria, South Australia and southern WA. “What we’ve seen here today is a credit to the breed and a credit to the membership the way they’ve endorsed our strategic plan,” Todd said.

“In 2019 they told us that they wanted us to grow our presence and they’ve backed that up today with the largest number of stud cattle exhibits on the grounds.” And while commercial producers are looking for Droughtmaster sires to add improvements to their herds, retaining loyal, repeat buyers, it’s Droughtmaster females that are now also bringing new converts to the breed, according to Darren Childs. “I’m lucky enough to be associated with some very large commercial operations and there is a tremendous market for breeding females and commercially bred Droughtmaster females, especially at the moment,” he said. “Every week you see the prices being paid for purebred Droughtmaster females it just highlights what the Droughtie is known for and why commercial producers are keen to have them in their herds.” In his experience, Darren is seeing a large portion of Droughtmaster females go into NSW joined to black bulls. “Producers there are looking for the extra milk and maternal traits that the Droughtmaster female can offer,” he said “Industry relevance to us is about fertile, functional, profitable cattle. If your cow herd is functional and fertile then they are producing calves that go into multiple markets. “It’s a pretty simple formula and I don’t think we should overthink it. When you’re talking about Droughtmaster cattle, they tick those three boxes pretty nicely.”

THEIR MOJO (AND A BEEF CHAMPION) great to breed something like that one day’,” Nick recalls.

“He’s not as pretty as Mojo but he’s bigger,” Nick says.

“He’s quite a high content animal and Aura has quite a lot of softness, so we thought the pairing would work well.”

Chief was lost during a bushfire in 2019, but six of his calves will be also be going up to the national sale in Rockhampton later this year.

The result was Mojo, a product of a successful implant and superb mothering from one of Farogan Valley’s “big roomy” recipient cows.

If he’s not sold out of the paddock beforehand, Mojo will also be headed to the CQLX selling centre at Gracemere.

And like her show career, Aura is proving just as successful in the breeding department.

“If we had more depth in our cow herd, we’d be keeping him,” Nick says.

She’s just produced another calf being prepared for show, while another brother to Mojo will go to the Droughtmaster National Sale in September.

“He has awesome genetics and obviously a great show record. We’re not taking any straws from him. Whoever buys him will be getting the whole package.

“He’s the prime example of a great Droughtmaster bull – he’s long, tidy underneath, heavy bone, extremely mobile, with a superb temperament.” Four months after Beef Australia 2021, and Nick and Sarah still can’t top the euphoria of winning in Rockhampton. “We were in tears when he won junior bull,” Nick said. “To win grand champion we were absolutely wonderstruck. He’s only 19 months old so to go up against three or four-year old bulls is really outstanding.”

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: DROUGHTIES OPEN MORE DOORS IN COMMERCIAL ARENA The prominence of Droughtmaster genetics in this year’s Nutrien Commercial Cattle Championships at Beef Australia highlights the versatility of the breed as solid finishers on grass and grain. By BRAD COOPER Droughtmasters have delivered for commercial producers at Beef Australia, widening the opportunities for success via their ability to finish strongly off grass or grain. The message that Droughtmasters deliver producers the best of both worlds was emphatically illustrated by tri-colour sashes to Cliff Mylrea, Rookwood, Gogango who presented the champion pen of lot fed heifers and the champion pen of pasture fed steers. Gus and Jen McCormack, of Clonlara, Glenmorgan, presented the reserve pen of lot fed steers, their operation’s best performance at Beef since Gus’ father, Ed, claimed the grand champion pen in 1991 with Droughtmaster steers from their commercial property, Dilga. Cliff Mylrea, who also produces stud Droughtmasters via the Needmor prefix, said it was an honour to win both categories, but prized the pasture fed victory slightly higher, given the greater degree of difficulty and variability in getting cattle to finish evenly on grass. “I think this result has been the most pleasing, to watch these pure Droughties finish so well on grass,” he said. “Getting cattle to finish well is never easy but if you put them in a feedlot, you’re a fair chance of getting them to a good weight and condition. Finishing cattle on grass is a different story.” In an interview with Droughtmaster Magazine after the winners were declared at the event in May, the commercial championships’ most successful exhibitor revealed some secrets to his success, pinpointing the central role a perennial legume called Desmanthus has played in adding condition to his cattle. The 30-month-old, HGP-treated purebred Droughtmaster steers weighed an average of 628.5 kg at the time of judging. Weaned onto Cliff’s buffel country on the commercial portion of his Rookwood enterprise 100 kilometres

26

north-west of Rockhampton, the steers had a similar start to their grazing lives as the heifers.

The accommodation and menu package at Duaringa was nothing short of five-star.

“They all get a start on the buffel,” Cliff explains. “The only difference is that the heifers were drafted out and put on grain at 15 months, while the steers went all the way through on grass.”

Cattle were fed a corn-based ration with cottonseed, liquid supplements and silage.

And the protein-packed legume Desmanthus provided the timely boost when the steers were rotated through the paddocks planted to the drought-tolerant perennial. According to Queensland’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Desmanthus is palatable to livestock, has a high digestibility and protein content, but does not cause bloat. A summer-growing legume, it thrives on neutral to alkaline, medium and heavy-clay soils in drier subtropical environments, tending to extend from the NSW border to Collinsville in north Queensland and as far west as Roma and Emerald. It needs an annual rainfall of between 400-1000 mm. DAF says it is performing well in trials, but has yet to realise its commercial potential. Cliff says he doesn’t need any more convincing. “It can be hard sometimes to get a good strike but we have one paddock where it’s really got going and the cattle seem to like it and do very well,” he said. The data on his LimousinDroughtmaster cross heifers is equally compelling. Sarah Donovan, manager Duaringa Station Feedlot, said the Rookwood heifers were the only females her facility, west of Rockhampton, fed for the Beef Australia competition. “So, I can’t make any comparison to the others but their average daily gain was 1.8 kg/day which is good, but the conversion was outstanding at 4.97:1 (consuming 4.97 kg dry matter to put on 1 kg live weight) on a dry matter basis,” she said. “That’s an incredible result for heifers.”

All competition cattle were fed in pens that had shade cover, enhancing performance during the hottest months of the year, while the Rookwood heifers shared a pen housing 18 females in a unit built to accommodate 100 head. At the time of judging, the winning heifers at 18 months of age weighed an average of 541.5 kg. “Droughtmasters have always performed well in our feedlot,” Sarah said. “Being situated in Central Queensland and relatively close to the coast (100 km as the crow flies) we experience high heat and humidity, particularly over the summer months. “They’re well adapted to those extremes and despite those conditions, they maintain good feed intake and have some of the best conversion rates I’ve seen.” Gus McCormack’s heavy steers in the 640-740 kg weight range were fed at the Bridle family’s Talbingo feedlot, near Dalby. The composite steers, with 50 per cent Droughtmaster content, were backgrounded on improved pasture and oats over winter in 2020 before they went into the Talbingo feedlot in January. Gus said their main focus at Dilga was on female fertility, but winning at Beef provided another timely reminder of the many benefits Droughtmasters brought to a beef enterprise. “We select and cull for fertility because our number one aim is to get as many calves on the ground as possible,” Gus said. “But to see your cattle up there with the best, stacked up against the cream of the best beef producers in the country, is an incredibly valuable benchmark, and shows just what a superb breed we have – it’s the full package.”

The Beef2021 Droughtmaster Committee were delighted to include some fundraising activities at Beef and nominated the Royal Flying Doctor Service to be the worthy recipients. A percentage of merchandise sales, including the incredibly popular pink cattle sticks, raised $500 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Rockhampton auxiliary, and a whopping $3,250 went to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Queensland Section through the auction of the ‘Charity Steer’ at the Beef Genetic Focus Sale. The Charity Steer was generously donated by Ken and Kerry McKenzie, Yaralla Droughtmasters. Bred on forest country in the Duaringa District and raised on native black spear and blue grasses, then onto improved buffel and legume pastures once weaned, the Charity Steer was then HGP treated and grain-fed for 120 days at the Duaringa Station Feedlot. The timing was perfect for the purebred milk tooth steer to look his absolute best, firstly as part of the herd on display at the Droughtmaster Marquee, also from the Yaralla Stud, and then as he went up for auction. In a flash he was knocked down to Grant, Daniel & Long, and the remainder of the display pen of steers were then sold to Teys Australia for $2,100 a head.

BEEF2021 REPORT

2021 BEEF EXPERIENCE By Bronwyn Bett s, Nindethana Droughtmasters and South Eastern Zone Director The Droughtmaster Research & Education Foundation Inc. (the ‘Foundation’) was established in 1998 as a vehicle through which funds could be raised and apportioned exclusively for the purpose of advancing the education and skills of young people involved in the beef cattle industry, and to provide grants, bursaries and scholarships to young people pursuing formal studies and scientific research in this area. Earlier this year, the Foundation announced that it would award two bursaries that would enable two young people under the age of 25 years, to attend and actively participate in the exciting and innovative Beef Australia 2021. The response to the announcement was extraordinary, with the Foundation receiving several quality applications from young beef enthusiasts across the country. The successful recipients of the inaugural Beef Experience bursaries were Sarah Holloway from Beaudesert in South East Queensland, and Chloe Paesler from Goondiwindi in Southern Queensland.

other members and breeders and engage with fellow youth. Beyond the Droughtmaster Precinct, the young women were exposed to many facets of the beef industry through property tours, seminars, and visiting the numerous industry displays and corporate stands that were available at the event. A highlight of the Beef 2021 Experience for both Sarah and Chloe was to meet so many people that are involved in the industry. Sarah, who is not from a rural background, believes that contacts in the industry for which she is so passionate, is very important. During the week that she spent at Beef 2021, she was thrilled to be able to meet and network with so many members of the Droughtmaster community, and to engage with people from diverse areas within the beef industry. A particular highpoint of the Beef 2021 Experience for Chloe was attending the Belmont Research Station property tour. During the tour, Chloe was exposed to some of the exciting technological advances that are currently being used in the beef industry. Chloe was particularly impressed by the use of trackers embedded in cattle tags that were used to monitor the movement of cattle to determine

areas that may be both over and under grazed. As part of the tour, Chloe also visited the Beef Breeding Services in Rockhampton where she was introduced to the technology behind selective breeding. Sarah and Chloe enjoyed their Beef 2021 Experience, and are both enormously grateful to the Droughtmaster Foundation for affording them this opportunity. ‘Being surrounded by so many people who are just as passionate about the beef industry as myself, was exciting’, said Sarah. ‘My first Beef will definitely not be my last! I am keen to be part of the development of beef into the future’. ‘I thoroughly enjoyed my week at Beef ’ said Chloe. ‘The experience solidified that I want to continue learning and working with Droughtmaster cattle’. The Droughtmaster Foundation would like to thank Droughtmaster members for welcoming Sarah and Chloe, and for contributing to what was a very positive experience for them both. A special thank you to Nindethana Droughtmasters and Cebella and Yellowwood Droughtmasters for opening up their campsites and billeting Sarah and Chloe during the weeklong event.

The bursaries enabled Sarah and Chloe to travel to and from Rockhampton, admission to Beef 2021, attendance at seminars and property tours of their choice, and funds to cover incidental expenses. During the weeklong experience, Sarah and Chloe were each billeted with a Droughtmaster family that were on the grounds and exhibiting stud beef cattle at the event. This afforded both young women the opportunity to be totally immersed in the program and to experience Beef from the inside. The Beef 2021 Experience exposed Sarah and Chloe to many facets of the beef industry. In the Droughtmaster Precinct, they were involved with the daily care, preparation and exhibiting of the Droughtmaster cattle, and interacting with visitors to the event who were inspecting the cattle under their care. In addition, they attended the activities in the Droughtmaster ‘tent’ where they witnessed a record breaking female auction, enjoyed a robust panel discussion involving industry leaders and Government representatives, and had the opportunity to meet

SHOW REPORT

Gatton Futurity supreme exhibit Needmor Hilary, paraded by Tammy Robinson, receives her tri-colour sash from sponsor Margaret Wilson, Blackbutt, with successful breeders Cliff Mylrea and Sasha Smith, Needmor stud, Rookwood, Gogango.

JUNIOR DROUGHTMASTERS HIT THEIR STRIDE AT GATTON FUTURITY By BRAD COOPER FOLLOWING ONE of the quietest show years in living memory, Droughtmaster members in March signalled strong intentions to get their marketing programs back to full stride with the biggest turnout for the Gatton Futurity in its 36-year history. The only show of its type in Queensland, exclusively for stud cattle aged 20 months and younger, drew a field of 187 exhibits to the Gatton Showgrounds, eclipsing the previous record of 164. The depth of the catalogue, oozing structural correctness and sound temperament across the classes, tested the stamina of judge Anna Hicks, Calaanah stud, Moura and associate judge Elizabeth Boughen, The Block, Rosewood, especially as the mercury climbed into the mid 30s on the first Saturday of autumn. “It was hot work but very rewarding and a great honour to be given the responsibility of assessing these beautifully prepared stud cattle,” Hicks said. “Across the board, both bulls and females, were very true-

to-type Droughtmasters, slick coats, smooth and strong in their movements, standing well and quiet to handle and lead around the show ring.”

senior champion, Wirrigai JFK, from Charm Ryrie’s Pittsworth stud, and the junior winner, Hamadra Kansas, from Andrew and Kerri McKenzie’s stud at Bluff.

In the end there could only be one Supreme Exhibit, with final accolades bestowed on a 14-month-old Droughtmaster heifer, announcing a triumphant return to the stud ring after a decadelong hiatus for her breeder Cliff Mylrea, Needmor stud, Gogango.

The McKenzies also produced the reserve champion bull calf, Hamadra Kermit, who featured in the same class as the ultimate junior winner. Both bulls are the progeny of Hamadra-bred sires and dams.

A daughter of Bundy Freightliner out of a Needmor dam, Hilary edged out champion heifer calf, Major Golden Girl, from the Major stud at Wivenhoe Pocket, operated by Matt and Rebecca Brooks. Mylrea said the final result was unexpected, but welcome, and a huge confidence boost after more than a decade away from the show ring. “Producing commercial cattle is really our main focus, but there’s no doubting the benefit this type of promotion brings to your whole operation,” he said. In a rare feat, Hilary was also supreme Grand Champion Exhibit against the bulls, including the

Other major ribbon winners included the reserve champion heifer calf, Oakmore Unique, an Araketa daughter from Sharon Harms’ Oakmore Park stud at Greenmount and Seymour Miss Janiska, who claimed reserve champion heifer, delighting her breeders Kirstie and Robert Orphant, whose sons, Riley and Thomas, had prepared and paraded the Gunalda stud’s show team. Reserve champion bull accolades went to Bryvonlea Victor, a 19-month-old polled son of Skye Wilfred and a Bryvonlea cow, pleasing stud principal Brian Heck who was able to present the sash he sponsored to his daughter Tennille Hughes, who paraded the elegant female on behalf of the Glastonbury stud.

SIMPLY THE BEST Toogoolawah State High School, whose cattle program under the supervision of co-ordinator Ross Tinney and teacher Angela Lynch produced worthy contenders against some of the big-name studs on the grounds. And then there was Mac Smith, the boy with the big smile and the big hat, matched only by his even bigger heart, whose emerging stud, Vale View M, collected three class ribbons. Under the watchful eye of his dad, Dave Smith, of Vale View stud, Manumbar, the pint-sized 9-yearold parader stood tall among those with more years under their belts, a position well within his comfort zone, according to his chief mentor. “He likes the glory, but not necessarily the hard work on the farm,” Smith joked. Futurity co-founder Val Evans keeps a close eye on proceedings and the ribbons. GATTON FUTURITY co-founder Val Evans called this year’s event “up there with the very best”. “And it wasn’t just the record numbers, it’s the atmosphere the Futurity creates,” she said. “Especially this year with so many people not getting the chance last year to bring their cattle together and enjoy each other’s company. “It’s just been marvellous and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” Evans, who turned 80 in July, started the Gatton Futurity with Margaret Wilson and their respective, now deceased husbands, Neil and Peter, in 1986, along with fellow stud breeder and inaugural judge, Ray Phillips, Sunny View stud, Kingaroy.

“It reminds me of all the good times being a Droughtmaster breeder. You make a lot of friends, who in time become more like family.” The legacy Evans and Wilson helped establish and sustain is creating opportunities for the next generation, with the Gatton Showgrounds venue teeming with young people hungry for more experience in the show ring. Such enthusiasm could be seen on the faces of students from

Young Mac countered with his own version of events, saying he enjoys tractor work and putting out the hay best. Regardless, says mum Colleen Fricke-Smith, the experience is what counts the most, not the ribbons won. “You come to Gatton to show your support for the Droughtmaster breed and to help realise the potential of those who will lead our breed into the future,” she said. “I think that’s why Gatton will always hold a very special place in the Droughtmaster story.”

The aim, said Evans, was to provide a platform for Droughtmaster breeders to showcase their rising sires and matrons, and to finesse the skills of young people still learning the art of handling and preparing show cattle. Her co-founder, Margaret Wilson, of the now dispersed Truvalle stud at Blackbutt, was honoured on the day by fellow stud breeders, who acknowledged her contribution to supporting Droughtmaster studs throughout southeast Queensland with a framed photo of her front paddock with the Truvalle sign in the frame. “I’m quite overwhelmed by the gesture and the generosity,” Wilson said.

NEWS

FORMER CEO NEIL DONALDSON AWARDED LIFE MEMBERSHIP difficulties. Life Member, John Bowler, was a Board Director during this time and was involved in Neil’s appointment. John reflects upon Neil’s time with the Society. “Droughtmasters owe a great debt of gratitude to former CEO Neil Donaldson. I was privileged to be a Director of the Society when Neil was appointed as Operations Manager to the Society in 1997. As a society we had come through a difficult financial period, held together by the personal commitment of the previous Secretary, John Boydell. Neil’s appointment was a leap of faith under the then President Bruce Campbell AM MBE, with the deal that we could only pay him very limited salary and he would have to find additional income and a vehicle. Neil delivered, demonstrating his financial management ability and his skills in persuading our members and the wider industry in contributing to our breed and the Society. He was able to increase our membership and the breed inventory over critical years in the stud industry when many breed Societies lost membership and registrations, to see the Droughtmaster breed become the second strongest in Queensland and fourth strongest in Australia at one stage. Neil’s ability to look past the immediate issues and plan for the long term has been instrumental in ensuring that the Society is in a sound financial situation today with its own premises. President Todd Heyman presented former CEO Neil Donaldson with his Life Membership at the National Female Sale in Gympie, with former President Rob Atkinson, Glen Ruth. By Jenny Underwood – Eversleigh & Wallace Vale Droughtmasters IN March 2021, Neil Donaldson was awarded Life Membership of the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society. From late 1997 until early 2019, Neil served the Society as the National Operations Manager/CEO which included a period as Company Secretary at the same time. During those two decades, Neil dedicated his time to raising the profile of the breed to such an extent that his name became synonymous with Droughtmaster. Neil Donaldson is well-respected within the livestock industry, other breed societies,

key industry players and other organisations including the media. The breed and its members were like family to him and Neil spent countless hours on the road covering most areas of Australia visiting (and often staying with) stud and commercial breeders on their properties as well as attending Field Days, and local shows and events. In the early days, Neil identified “gaps in postcodes”, particularly in the Northern Territory where Droughtmasters were only being run on a couple of the larger operations. Nowadays, Droughtmasters are found throughout Australia. During the late 90s, the Society was experiencing severe financial

“Any organisation does have a range of personalities, with individual members sometimes having personal objectives at odds with those of the organisation. Neil’s ability to talk with and assist all our members, whilst being conscious of the Directors’ and Society’s objectives, was a great skill, and this was recognised and appreciated by many members and those associated with the wider industry. Our breed is recognised across a number of forums such as ARCBA (Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association) and TBTS (Tropical Beef Technology Services) for the inclusive work of Neil in promoting our breed while supporting the wider beef industry at the same time. Neil was able to move past the parochial nature of many breed societies and see benefits in supporting industry projects which assisted the whole industry and which,

several sponsors to ensure the membership remained affordable.

“Neil is an excellent communicator and as a jack-of-all-trades with the Society in the early years, contributed at most Field Days, sales and promotional activities of the various zones, as well as providing much of the breed publicity in the rural press. His travels across Australia, his contacts and knowledge of the industry, and his interest in you as an individual, made him a great companion on long car trips and in conversation in the social scene.”

“Neil quickly moved into the role that saw him recognized as Mr Droughtmaster and we shared similar values and aims for the breed. From the early days Neil easily built a good relationship with the membership, often choosing to stay with members when travelling to the many events held Australiawide. Neil was dedicated to the breed and his recent life member status is very well deserved.”

Former President, Life Member and current Droughtmaster Society Patron, John Gardner, worked alongside Neil for many years. “I had not long been on the board when Neil was employed and shortly afterwards, I became acting President so Neil and I prett y much started together and spent the next 9-10 years working closely together with a very supportive board behind us. “In the early days we had very limited funds, so Neil had to bring in some income in the form of working outside the society as well as finding a sponsor to provide him with a work car. During Neil Donaldson’s tenure as CEO, Droughtmasters worked alongside the AACV (Australian Association of Cattle Veterinarians) to lead the way in developing soundness evaluation guidelines in the seedstock industry. Accepted as an integral part of bull sales these days, Droughtmaster were the first to introduce BBSE (Bull Breeding Soundness Examination) standards at Society Sponsored Sales. Neil’s influence was not only confined to the Droughtmaster breed. John Croaker, former General Manager of the Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association worked alongside Neil on many projects. “In addition to his loyalty and dedication to the Droughtmaster

breed, Neil is highly respected as an industry contributor. He played an important role as a member of the Executive Committee of ARCBA for 11 years, including 3 years as Vice President. His broad industry knowledge and deep understanding of the seedstock industry made a valuable contribution to ARCBA’s work as the peak industry body for the seed stock sector. “Neil and I worked closely together in developing and managing the Northern steer Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) project, commercialising genomic technologies for the Droughtmaster, Brahman and Santa Gertrudis breeds. His understanding of what the project could achieve and his leadership in helping to pull it together were invaluable. “It was also a pleasure to have worked with Neil in the organisation of the Roma Tropical Breeds Sale involving both the Droughtmaster and Brahman breeds for 20 years. Congratulations to Neil on being awarded Life Membership of the Droughtmaster Society after a long career as CEO.” Neil Donaldson dedicated his working life to Droughtmaster and the beef cattle industry. His influence upon the breed and its members will be long remembered.

GLENLANDS TAKES ALL INTERBREED ROCKHAMPTON TITLES

Champion Female. Reserve Junior Champion Bull was Comrade (Unreal) and another of the senior females, Belle (Voltage) took the Reserve Senior Champion Female. In claiming the major male title of the day Bateman (Virtue) saw off challengers from Brangus, Charbray, Brahman and Droughtmaster contenders while to get to the same level in the female tri coloured ribbon award, Accolade had to defeat Brahman and Speckle Park rivals.

Glenlands secured three Interbreed titles at the recent 2021 Rockhampton Show. Taking out the Supreme Breeders Group from Glenlands were exhibits, Cherish, Accolade and Bateman. Accolade went on to take out the Supreme Female while Bateman took out the Supreme Interbreed Male. With the winners are Brendon, Kaytlin, Ryan and Jason Childs and judge, Wayne York, Karragarra Studs, Emerald. By Kent Ward IN A NEW format with all Interbreed showing (Bos indicus and Bos taurus) and under judge, Wayne York, Karragarra Droughtmasters and Simmentals, Emerald, the Glenlands Stud, Bouldercombe claimed all Interbreed titles at the recent Rockhampton Show. The prefix took out the Supreme Interbreed, Grand and Senior

Champion Bull with the 1064kg, Bateman. They secured the Supreme Interbreed, Grand and Senior Champion Female with Accolade. Bateman, Accolade and with a junior team member, Cherish they claimed the Supreme Interbreed Breeders Group. In earlier judging Glenlands youngster, Dapper (Medway Utopia) was sashed the Calf Champion Bull while Cherish (Maxamillion) took with her the Reserve Junior

Commenting on the Supreme Champion Bull, Wayne York said it was the sheer volume of Bateman that put him on top overall. “He’s complete with thickness and muscle. He’s got looseness and softness of skin, stands on good bone, he’s reproductively sound and has a good sirey head,” Mr York said. “He’s a bull that I think ticks so many boxes in so many ways that well and truly puts him on top.” In the run up to the Rockhampton Show, Bateman took out similar titles at the Capella, Clermont and Springsure Shows. After Rockhampton he added the Mt Larcom Interbreed title to that list.

JUNIOR MEMBERS

JUNIOR MEMBER SPOTLIGHT JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP is available to breeders under the age of 25. Junior members are able to record cattle on the Droughtmaster herdbook and sell at Society Sponsored Sales. Our junior members are an integral and valued part of our membership base and the next generation of future breeders are extremely important to the Droughtmaster Society.

Riley and Thomas Orphant are third generation Droughtmaster breeders and are very passionate and involved in the breeding and the daily operations at Seymour Droughtmasters, between Gympie and Maryborough. In 2018 they established their own junior studs, Seymour R and Seymour T.

What’s your least favourite? Nothing, I love cattle.

THOMAS ORPHANT • Age: 8

How many Shows did you participate in this year? 8 I think.

Where do you go to school? Riverside Christian College in Maryborough.

and did you have a favourite and why? BEEF 21 because I got to camp with Mac Smith and look after Mort. We also had fun looking at all the trade sites.

Do you have any other school mates who show cattle? No. Apart from Droughtie cattle, what are your favourite past times? Motorbike riding and driving my buggy. What are your jobs on the property each day/week? I feed and water the working dogs every day. Feed the show cattle in the afternoons and put hay out. On weekends we help muster and check the cattle. Tom and Mort

RILEY ORPHANT • Age: 12 Where do you go to school? Riverside Christian College in Maryborough. Do you have any other school mates who show cattle? No. Apart from Droughtie cattle, what are your favourite past times? Playing sport, motorbike riding and driving my buggy. What are your jobs on the property each day/week? Feed the show cattle in the afternoons and put hay out. On weekends we help muster and check the cattle. Now that I am 12 I enjoy doing tractor work. What’s your favourite part of looking after your cattle? Mustering cattle. Dad also lets me brand my own cattle. Going to shows. What’s your least favourite? I don’t have anything that I don’t like doing as long as it is outside on the farm. How many Shows did you participate in this year? 8 I think.

What’s your favourite part of looking after your cattle? Going to shows.

Riley and Tom at Gympie Show 2021

Lastly - who’s your favourite animal and why? Mort because I have looked after him since he was a calf. I am the only one who leads Mort at shows, but Riley had to lead him at BEEF because you have to be 12 to lead at BEEF. I was very proud of Mort at BEEF when he won Reserve Champion Bull Calf. Mort will continue to be in the show team next year and dad said that we will keep Mort for a sire. I plan to put him with all my cows when he is old enough.

and did you have a favourite and why? BEEF 21 because I got to lead in the Droughtmaster classes and I got to participate in the Junior Judging and Junior Handling. I was lucky enough to place fifth. I also got to see friends that I only get to see at Droughtmaster events. Lastly - who’s your favourite animal and why? Seymour Rianna is my favourite cow as she was one of the first Droughtmasters that I showed. When I sold my first bulls at the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale, I put some of the money towards an IVF program with Rianna. I have a sale bull going to the National Sale this year that is a result of that program, Seymour R Landcruiser. I was also able to show another bull calf out of Rianna at BEEF 21 and other shows this year.

My favourite animal other than cattle is my dog Tod because he goes everywhere with me and rides on my buggy with me.

DROUGHTMASTER FEMALES SPEAK VOLUMES AT TOOGOOLAWAH Head start for bullocks Livestock buyer Midge Thompson, of Aussie Land and Livestock, Nanango was working the phone on behalf of buyer clients during the sale. In between calls he explained that in his own operation of leased country he runs a portion of tropically infused cows and Droughtmaster cows mated to Droughtmaster and Euro bulls. “But the Droughtmaster cows are the foundation,” he said. “They have natural, mothering abilities, are easy-care and bloody fertile. “Being a stock agent means I also don’t have a lot of time, so I need a breeding herd that’s low maintenance. That’s another tick in the Droughtmaster column.” In a region famous for the Wivenhoe Dam and the Tarong power station in the nearby South Burnett , Toogoolawah is a fuel source of a different kind, a reservoir of red meat that will keep the beef supply chain firing. And it appears Droughtmaster females are lighting the spark.

Temperament the key

By BRAD COOPER ONE OF South-East Queensland’s premier selling centres for quality weaners consistently demonstrates why Droughtmaster females are at the heart of the offering.

Droughtmaster Magazine visited Toogoolawah Saleyards in midMay to talk with buyers and sellers at one of three weaner sales hosted by Brisbane-based stock and property agents Shepherdson and Boyd in 2021.

Fertile Females Cory Kruger from nearby property Corolla was among the action, admiring some of the Droughtmaster infused weaners on offer. Cory’s breeder block that’s been part of the family operation since 1932, runs a predominantly Droughtmaster herd mated to Droughtmaster bulls starting in October. With a conception rate of 95 per cent, calving is finished in December, and calves are weaned off a day before tracking them to the sale. “I never have any dramas with the Droughtmaster mothers. They have loads of milk and they grow a good calf that turns into a low stress, easily handled animal.”

AUGUST 2021

Steve Barraclough and his wife Leanne have been running Droughtmasters for 25 years, mating pure-bred bulls to heifers and joining Charolais bulls as terminal sires to Droughtmaster cows. The couple have four blocks at Toogoolawah with 120 breeders around the Mount Beppo district of alluvial flats and scrub country. Recent rainfall over summer and early autumn has been a huge bonus, but even through the years of stubborn drought conception was strong at 90 per cent, with 95 per cent of pregnant females getting calves on the ground. “And even when seasons are tough the weaners don’t lose weight, they keep putting on condition,” he said. Selling 43 weaners at the sale – 30 steers and 13 heifers, Steve highlighted the even temperament across his sale draft. “They are such an even line of cattle, nice and quiet. When you have older people in the yards managing the operation on your own, or with the kids helping out, you just can’t have problem cattle. “The temperament of the Droughtmaster makes them a joy to work with.”

droughtmaster.com.au

Mating October-February and calving July-December, Midge’s 300-strong breeding herd will produce calves that will be retained and conditioned on grass and grain until they mature as heavy steers at 650-700 kilograms for the Jap Ox market. “The bullocks feed well and lay down plenty of muscle and fat either in the feedlot or the paddock, but they get that head start from their Droughtmaster mums as soon as they hit the ground,” he said.

Calves thrive Beef producer Ashley Schefe, who was selling PTIC heifers at Toogoolawah, reckons the Droughtmaster calf will show more resilience in the tough times than any other breed he knows. Which means that in the good times, he has paddocks full of blossoming young cattle at his 365-hectare property at Anduramba towards Crows Nest, near Toowoomba. Ashley used to put Charolais bulls over Droughtmaster females, before switching to Droughtmaster sires in 2019 following purchases from Paul Laycock’s High Country stud. With 55 Droughtmaster cows in calf or with calves at foot, mothers and their young are revelling in the change in seasonal fortunes, he said. “I look out over my paddocks and all I can see are red shiny cattle up to their guts in grass,” he said. “It’s a beautiful sight.”

During Beef2021 five fortunate members of the Downlands College Cattle Show Team were hosted by Droughtmaster Studmasters Sharon Harms (Oakmore Park), Bronwyn Betts (Nindethana), Mark & Ruth Pagett (Rangeview) and Caitlyn Donaldson (Medway). It was a great experience for the Downlands students, and an extra set of hands for the Droughtmaster hosts during a busy week at Rockhampton. Flick Donner On the 2nd of May, this year I had the opportunity to travel up to Rockhampton with 14 other students from Downlands College for Beef Week. During my time at Beef, I had the chance to work with Bronwyn Betts and her team at Nindethana Droughtmasters, assisting in taking care of and preparing their cattle each day. I am extremely grateful for this experience as I was able to see the different ways people work with their cattle, got to see some unfamiliar breeds and was able to learn new skills beyond just

Downlands College Cattle Show Team has an ethos and culture of inclusivity, promoting engagement with the program to allow students to develop knowledge, skills and experience in the cattle industry. Our College Show Team has a strong, competitive history both in the show ring and in individual student events such as Junior Judging and Junior Handling, with the number of participating students increasing every year. Currently there are over 70 students in the team. Beef Week is an incredible experience that the show team participates in

The team has competed in a number of local shows this year, including Pittsworth, Oakey, Warwick, Goombungee, Toowoomba Royal, Rockhampton Beef Week and Farm Fest. The next events will be Ekka with the team exhibiting led steers that have been selected, prepared, and shown by students. The final show will be a local school’s Hoof & Hook competition sponsored by Elders. Thank you again for the opportunities the Droughtmaster Society gave our students. We are truly grateful. fitting cattle to show. It was amazing to just be part of the atmosphere and meet some people heavily involved in the agricultural industry. I found it exciting when attending the Droughtmaster sale on the Wednesday night where multiple lots were sold, some lots being donated and others only offered to people under 25 to promote the next gen start up. It is exciting to know that people already in the industry are trying to keep the industry growing by giving young people a chance to build their own businesses and lives in order to keep improving the entire beef industry and to encourage young people like me to get involved and have a go.

Kian Verrall & Brendan Holmes To be two of the 14 chosen to go to Beef 2021 was a massive privilege. Neither of us expected to be going to the nation’s biggest beef event representing such a great school and working with industry professionals. About five weeks

Kian Verrall, hosted by Medway Droughtmasters

before Beef we were given the task of finding our own stud to fit for as the school was not taking cattle. I immediately rang a contact at the Droughtmaster Society to see if they knew of anyone going who would like some help with preparing cattle. Medway Droughtmasters put their hand up to host us for the week, working and fitting out for them. Both of us were fortunate enough to have a welcoming and friendly stud to work for which made the week a great experience. To have been called part of the Medway team was something that we will never forget. With many opportunities at Beef, the one that sticks out the most was the Droughtmaster genetics sale. As invite only it was a great privilege to have been invited to attend and watch as the two Medway heifers we worked with for the week were sold. We would really like to thank Medway Droughtmasters for hosting us for the week and creating a wonderful experience and something that will never be forgotten, not to mention the endless work from other Society members such as Sharon Harms

SCHOOLS

CATTLE IN THE CLASSROOM of Oakmore Park Droughtmasters, Bronwyn Bett s of Nindethana Droughtmasters and Marcus Swan, Aurora Droughtmasters.

Michael Butler Hi, my name is Michael Butler and I worked for Mark and Ruth from Rangeview in the Droughtmaster shed. They had two bulls and two heifers. I worked for six days with their stud, starting at about 5:00am each morning to clean out beds and get ready for the day. Every day was different - the first day we washed the four head, and on the second I got my animal prepped for Junior Paraders and took the younger bull out. I also was lucky enough to attend the Droughtmaster sale. The third day was the big day for the Droughtmasters, where most of the day we prepped the animals for the ring, and I think we did a prett y good job, placing 4th in the heifer class, and in the young bulls we got a 2nd and 4th. Throughout the week we prepared animals for the public and engaged with leaders in the industry. The fifth day involved the Junior Judges competition

where we judged Droughtmaster bulls as one of the three rings. On those days I learned a lot from the stud I work for, and I think I showed them a couple things too.

Lily Wyrzykowski I attended Beef 2021 as part of the Downlands Cattle Show team and it was a great experience that introduced me to many areas of the agricultural industry. While at Beef, I worked with Oakmore Park Droughtmasters for Sharon and Greg Harms, whose invaluable knowledge and experience greatly enriched my understanding of the Australian cattle industry and the Droughtmaster breed. My experience at Beef while I was an understudy of Sharon and Greg, expanded my knowledge and understanding of the importance that the future generation of cattle breeders hold in sustaining the agricultural industry through an everchanging environment and demanding population. It was great to see how the Droughtmaster Society is actively involved in helping future generations by increasing their potential with

initiatives such as the Beef Genetic Focus Sale through the Droughtmaster Next Gen Committee. Through the work of Sharon and Greg Harms I was given first-hand knowledge of the Droughtmaster breed and their importance and relevance to the Australian environment. Beef 2021 was an incredible experience that has inspired me to pursue a career in the agricultural industry. I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend Beef 2021 and look forward to returning to Beef in 2024.

INTERNATIONAL GENETICS

DROUGHTMASTER’S BREED TRAITS ARE PROVING INVALUABLE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN BEEF INDUSTRY By Chippy Watson, Vova Genetics ln the late 1990’s a well-known South African cattleman and auctioneer Johan van der Nest visited Australia and came across a magnificent breed of cattle called ‘Droughtmaster’. What so impressed Johan about these cattle was that, although the composition of the breed was like that of the Beefmaster back home in South Africa, the Droughtmaster had much more indicus content. Johan went on a mission to introduce this breed to South Africa through the Beefmaster Society. He applied to ‘The Registrar for Breed Improvement’ and was permitted to import semen to use in the Beefmaster herds, however the Registrar would not allow the Droughtmaster as a ‘standalone’ breed, citing the compositions of the two breeds being too similar. ln 2011 with the purchase of cows at the 4X4 Beefmaster Annual Production Sale my wife Jane and I formed the Vova Beefmaster Stud. We were drawn to these smooth coated, quality and functional cattle, although it was only later that we realised that it was the Droughtmaster influence in these cattle that had so impressed us. ln 2012 we purchased 4 embryo donor cows from the ‘Considerata’ herd and a further 23 females at their 2013 dispersal sale. ln 2O13 the ‘Africa Droughtmaster Cattle Breeders Society of Namibia’ was formed and managed by the ‘Namibia Stud

AUGUST 2021

Breeders Association’ in Windhoek and integrated to BREEDPLAN. ln 2014 I travelled with a group of enthusiastic fellow breeders to Australia and visited some of the leading Droughtmaster Studs in Queensland. We are extremely grateful to have sourced genetics from ‘Glenlands’, ‘Yaralla’, ‘Hamandra’, ‘Rondel’, ‘Cashmere’, ‘Bryvonlea’ and ‘Vale View’ Studs. A year later I attended the Glenlands Annual Bull Sale and purchased a semen share in Glenlands Tradition in partnership with Medway Droughtmaster Stud, and also Glenlands Timekeeper. Vova Genetics are farming the stud operation in the mountainous Drakensberg region in the Underberg district of Southern Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa. The property is 1500m above sea level with harsh winters often receiving snow falls with temperatures fluctuating from as low as -17C in winter to over 40C in summer. We are currently running 300 registered stud cows and 600 commercial cows, which are used as recipients for embryo programs. We aim to produce hardy, fertile cattle with good milking ability that deliver a small calf and produce excellent weaners that will perform in the feedlot and reduce labour costs. Vova is breeding cattle from the best genetics acquired originally from the ‘Considerata’ and ‘4X4’ herds, using modern technology in A.l and embryo flushing techniques to fast-track our planned breeding program and

genetic enhancement. ln 2O21 we are expecting to drop 165 embryo calves from recipient cows that are currently pregnancy tested in calf. What we have seen in the Droughtmaster are certain traits that we are infusing into the Africa Droughtmaster with phenomenal results. The Droughtmaster is wonderfully smooth coated and hardy with strong legs to cover long distances in search of food and water, an adaptable animal with longevity and good mothering characteristics. This we attribute to the higher indicus content in the breed, thus delivering a smooth tropical skin which is more tolerant to heat, ticks, flies and cancer. The Droughtmaster have been developed in large herds under extensive conditions and strict natural selection. Another positive of this breed is the large percentage of them being polled, leading to the natural de-horning of calves and the reduction of both stress in the animal and labour costs. What has also impressed us about the breed is the masculinity of the bulls, yet the females retain their femininity with lovely udders and teat placement. Vova Genetics are concentrated on breeding superior Africa Droughtmaster animals that are smooth coated, medium framed with a low maintenance digestive system to allow for eff icient feed conversion and thus resulting in good economic value. www.vova.co.za

A WORD FROM THE WEST

DROUGHTMASTERS DO WELL AT DEEP VALLEY, WA WA breeder Dick Vincent, of De Grey Park stud at Capel.

By Harry Clarke

In 2015 they bought the Barwonga Droughtmaster stud from Tamworth, NSW, consisting of 80 cows, forming a great baseline to their herd.

THE BREED performs well on the heavy, hilly country around Donnybrook in the southern corner of Western Australia, but for Glenn and Jodie Hoskins, running Droughtmaster cattle has had other benefits too.

Fast forward a decade, and Deep Valley has expanded from one block to four totalling 800 acres.

“I didn’t grow up on a farm and I’ve only been working with cattle full time for three and a half years,” he said.

The property now stands 125 breeders and five bulls, and the Hoskins’ are well on their way to reaching their growth objectives.

“I’m prett y lucky we’ve got Droughtmaster cattle because their temperament is so great. They’re so quiet and that’s certainly helped me out a lot.”

“Our rainfall is about 900mm a year so we’ve got good, heavy country,” Mr Hoskins said. “The soil is clay over loam, so the grass grows well down here and the cattle seem to go very well. They get a good start in life.” The Hoskins’ have this year carried out artificial insemination with 40 cows and heifers and plan to introduce embryonic transfers next season. “We want to keep pushing along our genetics and, so far so good. The young heifers that are coming through are great.”

“We want to get up to 180 head, so we’re not selling a lot of heifers at the moment. We’re just trying to breed up a bit so that we can sell a good 70 or 80 bulls a year,” he said.

Mr Hoskins is the manager of Deep Valley Droughtmasters, a stud founded in 2010 by his parents in law, Graham and Robin Bishop.

With reliable rain, cool climates and rich soil, the Donnybrook region is prime for fruit farming. But those conditions are a treat for livestock as well.

Even the hilly nature of the countryside serves a purpose, giving the bulls nice condition before they’re sent north to predominantly Pilbara stations at the age of one.

NORTHERN BIN STEER PROJECT UPDATE and the Droughtmasters 296kg. The sires of the steers were from Breffni, Bryvonlea, Cashmere, Fairhaven, Heitiki, Ivanhoe, Lisgar, Lynsey Park, Strathfield, Truvalle and Vale View studs. The decision was made to sell the steers due to having to hold them over the winter, with minimal growth during that period. Table 2 shows the raw averages and maximum and minimum for the Spyglass No 19 Droughtmaster Steers.

By Paul Williams, Tropical Beef Technology Services (TBTS) The joint Northern BIN Steer Project between the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society (DSBS), Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association (ABBA) and a consortium of Santa Gertrudis Breeders, with funding assistance from the Meat & Livestock Australia Donor, started in 2015 and is now in its seventh year. The project has currently purchased nine cohorts of steers from Spyglass and seven cohorts of steers from Brian Pastures. The Northern BIN Steer Project is providing data which is assisting in the future implementation of genomically enhanced EBV’s through the “Single Step” analysis and a future Tropical crossbred analysis. This is possible as the Brahman and Droughtmaster steers (from Spyglass and Brian Pastures) and Santa Gertrudis steers from Brian Pastures have been run together since birth, having only been split during the joining period of their dams in the Repronomics Project.

Brian Pastures No 19 steers were purchased in August 2019 and backgrounded at three different properties. Narayen Research station for one month before moving to Raglan Station in September 2019 until February 2020. From there they were moved to “Jimarndy” Clarke Creek where they were backgrounded, and then on to Barmount Feedlot on the 2nd November due to the lack of a break in the season and a shortage of feed. The Droughtmaster, Brahman and Santa steers were run in separate pens and a record of feed consumption was recorded. The Droughtmasters average daily consumption was 14.07 kg/head compared to the Brahmans 11.66 kg/ head and Santa Gertrudis at 14.45 kg/ head. The steers were weighed, and carcase scanned on the 4th February 2021 for P8, rib, EMA and IMF. The Droughtmaster steers averaged 564kg with an average daily weight gain of 2.19kg per day from feedlot entry weight with scans of P8 fat 12mm, Rib Fat 7 mm, EMA 71 and IMF 3.5%. The steers were slaughtered at Teys, Lakes Creek on the 15th March with the Brahman steers averaging 315kg, Santa’s 357kg and Droughtmaster’s 342kg. The sires of the steers were from Angle Zed, Clonlara, Comanche, Ivanhoe, Lisgar, Lynsey Park and Vale View studs. Table 3 shows the raw average and maximum and minimum for the Droughtmaster Steers.

To date the Northern BIN Steer Project has purchased 3,024 steers of which 1,205 are Droughtmasters. A breakdown of breed and calving year is shown in Table 1. The sires of the project steers are either proven sires with a large number of registered progeny (few of which have been performance recorded with BREEDPLAN) or young up and coming bulls. Of these steers 2,145 have been carcase scanned and over 1,800 have carcase data collected in the Abattoir.

2019 Kill Data Spyglass No 19 Steers Spyglass No 19 steers were backgrounded at Spyglass after weaning for about 10 months before transferring to Warraka about 40km south west of Taroom and turned off on grass as Jap Ox steers. The steers were weighed, and carcase scanned on the 13th May for P8, Rib, EMA and IMF. The Droughtmaster steers averaged 558kg with scans of P8 fat 9mm, Rib Fat 5mm, EMA 70 and IMF 2.8%. The steers were slaughtered at Teys, Biloela on 21st June with the Brahman steers averaging 285kg

The steers are sired by bulls from Clonlara, Fairhaven, Garthowen, Ivanhoe, Lisgar, Lynsey Park, Strathfield. and Yaralla studs. Steers will be weighed, and carcase scanned which will coincide with 600-day weight on the 21st July.

Spyglass No 21 Steers Steers were weaned late May and transferred to Warraka in June. At weaning they averaged 191kg, with the Droughtmasters averaging 194kg and the Brahmans 187kg with the weights ranging between 137kg and 247kg for the Droughtmaster steers.

Brian Pastures No 21 Steers Steers were weaned in April and transferred to Warraka in May. At the exit weight from Brian Pastures they averaged 262kg, with the Droughtmasters averaging 257kg, Brahmans 242kg and the Santa Gertrudis 282kg and weights ranging between 190kg and 326kg for the Droughtmaster steers.

There are currently around 630 steers backgrounding at Warraka made up of Spyglass and Brian Pastures No 20 and 21. Season permitting the steers will be turned off a mixture of grass and Leucaena or if necessary, the steers will be finished in a feedlot.

MAKING GROUND NEAR CASINO, NSW Why Droughtmasters have proved an easy conversion for former professional rugby player Alex Gibbon. By Brad Cooper In the middle of building a successful rugby union career, Alex Gibbon and his wife Paige have been doing the hard yards expanding their Droughtmaster operation in northern NSW. They are also kicking goals since starting in 2015, with plans to have 150 registered pure Droughtmaster breeders in their herd book by the end of this year. The stud portion will add to the 300 breeders they have in

their commercial operation, run across two properties at Capeen Creek and Mallanganee. The two freehold properties about an hour apart comprise 485 hectares combined. The Gibbons lease a further 810 hectares near the Capeen operation, west of Casino, NSW. The mix of country, from scrub soil and creek flats, to basalt and lightly timbered country gives them options to rotate their breeders during joining and calving and to hold progeny to grow out when the season is right. “Given that we’re classified as coastal country with high rainfall, our pastures are a little light on minerals, such as phosphorus, so we do supplement with loose licks,” Alex explained. “But we’re also trialling some organic fertilisers to build our nutrient profile in our soil. Other than that, we have what I’d call a low maintenance herd – they have great temperament, calve well and don’t need a lot in the pest management area. “That’s the reason we went with Droughties in the beginning and they haven’t disappointed.” The lower demands on-farm and the support of Paige have allowed Alex to invest in his off-farm job as a rural property agent with Ray White Rural at Casino. He’s also been able to sustain his representative rugby career – this season playing with NSW Country, while resurrecting a local rugby union club called the Richmond Range. “I’m the president, captain and coach and we have about 43 young blokes on the books, which means that with only one team, not everyone needs to commit their time every weekend and it makes for a great culture” he said.

Alex and Paige Gibbon are building their Stonebridge stud and commercial operation and will be among many buyers looking for quality Droughtmaster bulls this season.

76

“This district has done it tough for a long time with drought and bushfires, so the redevelopment of the club is providing a much-needed social outlet. “The power of sport to improve people’s mental health should never be under-estimated.”

Once the football season comes to an end, the former Queensland Reds and Australian 7s player will be embarking on a tour of a different kind – searching for more Droughtmaster bulls to service his expanding breeder herd. Alex says he’s in the market to purchase two new sires this season, with hopes his investment will match the returns he received from last year’s $21,000 acquisition at the High Country sale at Eskdale, Qld. “High Country Innovative was the top price of the sale and we’ve been really impressed with him,” he said. “He went out with about 40 cows almost from the moment he came home and he’s put some magnificent calves on the ground already.” Running his joining window from August to October for heifers and September to November for all other stock, Alex says pregnancy testing recorded a conception rate of 90 per cent last season. The biggest challenge, he said, was getting some first calf heifers and a few older cows back in calf. Alex says he’s continuing to cull strictly on fertility, part of the plan to build a highly functional breeding base with a consistent genetic line. “I anticipate our conception rates will be high again this mating season,” he said. “Our ultimate aim is to one day consistently present bulls to the National Sale, Roma and Bunya Bull Sales, but we need to work to the point where we have an even line of cattle of which we can be proud, and confident that top producers will want to have in their operations. “I’m also a very big believer in stats and data, so I’m looking forward to the gains the Droughtmaster breed will make as that data profile continues to build. “We know from on the ground experience that Droughties perform. Once the data proves this beyond question, I see some big opportunities for Droughtmaster breeders.”
