Dr. Thomas Taylor - Tips For Learning To Play A New Song On Guitar Dr. Thomas Taylor has enjoyed a passion for music for most of his life and is a talented guitarist, having invested hundreds of hours into learning how to play the instrument. Still, even as an experienced player who still has to work hard whenever he wants to learn a new song. Thankfully, there are a number of things that he, and other guitarists, can do to make this process easier, including all of the following. Listen To The Song Before you start trying to play a new piece it can be beneficial to sit down and listen to it a few times. Not only will this help you get to grips with the various techniques that you will have to understand, but it will also allow you to pick up on the tempo the song needs to be played at. This familiarity with the material will prove extremely beneficial when you sit down and start learning how to play it. Practice New Techniques Few things are more frustrating for guitarists than the feeling that they are getting to grips with new songs, only to run into a roadblock when they are practicing. Research the music you are looking to learn and see if there are any techniques required that you have yet to learn. Your initial practice sessions should be sent familiarizing yourself with these new techniques, as you won’t be able to bring the song together if you can execute them. Start Out Slow While you may have the correct tempo for the song in your head, trying to play at that speed when you haven’t learned the music will lead to a lot of mistakes being made. Take things slow and focus on familiarizing yourself with the notes and chord progressions you need to play. Consider splitting the song into smaller sections too, so you can focus intensely on any that are giving you trouble. Once you are able to link it all together, you can start speeding things up until you are at the right tempo. Keep Going Learning a new song can be a disheartening experience if you are struggling to get it right. The key is to exercise a little patience and keep playing. Dedicate some time each night to practicing the piece and don’t allow yourself to become frustrated if you mess up. As time goes on you should start to find that you can play more fluidly and the song starts to come together. Dr. Thomas Taylor is a retired surgeon and talented guitarist.
