A retired academic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Taylor understands what it takes for young medical students to succeed in their fields. He's taught for more than twenty years, during which he's helped numerous students become better. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you go through surgical training.  Show enthusiasm. Show your passion for the calling by showing up at the operating room at every opportunity, asking scrub, and learning how to suture, among other things. But also, be respectful and polite as well.  Get ready to work hard. The days are going to be long, and you may go an entire day without food. Emergencies happen at the most inopportune time, and the process of learning can be frustrating. Remember, the stakes are high, so be ready to give it your best shot. Dr. Thomas Taylor was the Surgical Program Director at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, Texas.
