Bishop Leroy Newman Friendly Chruch Ministries International

Bishop Leroy C. E. Newman, Presiding Prelate and Chief Apostle of Friendly Church Ministries International for more than 46 years. Born in Cockran, GA, 1944, raised in Pompano Beach, Florida by his grandparents who were share croppers and local business entrepreneurs; his grandmother took care of the fields while his grandfather maintained the family business. Bishop Newman is a graduate of Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach and holds a Bachelors Science Degree from York College in Sociology; Bishop Newman also holds a Master and a PhD in the Sociology of Religion. Bishop is the eldest of a family of eleven, five sisters and five brothers. He is married with three sons, one Bishop and two Elders in the Lord’s Church; Lady Mattie, an Elder, Mother and dynamic Songstress shares in the oversight of their ministerial responsibilities; Bishop Newman is an important figure in the history of the Friendly Church and in the religious communities in which it served; he is a member of several community and faith based organizations; he is the founder and President of the Friendly Bible Institute and Tutorial College, known as FBITC, a member of the Accreditation Council for Independent Bible Institutes and Schools; he served 30 years as Vice President of Educational Services for Global Business Institute and now serves as one of the founding Elders of The Ecumenical College of Bishops and Pastors. It was in the summer of 1960 that Bishop Newman “fell under the influence of a definite creed,” and excepted as ruler over his life the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which, through God’s mercy, has never been effaced or obscured” He became a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and holds the typical belief that Christ is all. Bishop Newman is a literary figure of note: his major writings include his autobiography (soon to be published), The Pursuit of Excellence (a text of developing your personal ministry), and Broken Ribs in every Pew (dealing with hurt in ministry), Who Took The Bit Out of The Horse’s Mouth? Which he co-authored with Mother Navadia Moore. Although Bishop Newman’s journey as Pastor of the Friendly Church has ended, it was not because he was too tired and found unuseful, but because he had an ear to hear the spirit when He speaks and the grace to obey what it says; God has given him a new vision and set new dimensions for his stewardship in the Kingdom of God. Wait and see what God is about to do with this Man of God.!

Preface to the Ordinal The Holy Scriptures and Ancient Christian writers make it clear from the time of the Apostles, there have been different ministries within the church. In particular, since the time of the New Testament, three distinct orders of ordained ministers have been characteristic of the one universal church. First, there is the order of Bishops who carry on the apostolic work of leading, supervising and uniting the Body of Christ both locally and internationally. Secondly, associated with them are the presbyters, also called ordained elders, in subsequent times known as priests. Together with the Bishops, they take part in the governance of the Church, in the carrying out of its evangelistic, missionary and pastoral work. This, of course is, the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, Christian counseling and administrating the Holy Sacraments of communion, water baptism and solemnizing the covenant of marriage. Thirdly, there are Deacons who assist Bishops and Elders in all of this work. It is also a special responsibility of Deacons to minister in Christ’s name to the poor, the sick, the suffering and the helpless. The persons who are chosen and recognized by the Church as being called by God to the gospel ministry are admitted to these sacred orders by solemn prayer, anointing with consecrated oil and the laying on of Episcopal hands. It has been and is the intention and purpose of this Church to maintain and continue these three holy orders. It is for this purpose we are gathered for a sacred service of ordination and affirmation. No persons are allowed to exercise the offices of Bishop, Elder or Deacon, or wear their insignia in this Church unless they are so established or have already received such blessedness with the laying on of hands by Bishops who are duly qualified to confer Holy Orders. It is also recognized and affirmed that the threefold ministry is not the exclusive property of this portion of the universal Body of Christ everywhere. It is a gift from God for the nurture of His people, the proclamation of the Gospel and the advancement of the Kingdom of God in the earth. Accordingly the manner of conferring in this ministry is to be such as has been, and is, most generally recognized by Christian people as suitable for the conferring the sacred orders of Bishop, Elder and Deacon. While this gathering is colorful it must remain sacred. All in attendance are admonished to maintain an atmosphere that will continue to bring glory and honor to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gate Called Beautiful Kingdom Ministries

Almighty God, who by Thy Divine Providence hath appointed diverse Orders of Ministers of Thy Church, and didst inspire thine Apostles, to appoint men to the orders of Deacons and Presbyters. Make these, we beseech thee O Lord, to be modest, humble, and consistent in their ministration. Replenish them with the truth of Thy doctrine and adorn them with the innocence of life, which both by word and good example they may faithfully serve thee in this office to the glory of Thy Holy Name, and the edification of Thy Church. Grace them to have a ready will to observe all spiritual discipline; that they, having always the testimony of good conscience to continue ever stable in the apostles’ doctrine. Uphold them in strength, by the power of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ, that they may so well behave themselves in this office. Grant this, we beseech thee, most merciful Lord, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer, one God now and forever. Amen

The Examination

Bishop Leroy Newman

My Sister, you have been chosen by your Brothers and Sisters and the people have affirmed their trust in you by acclaiming your appointment and election. A pastor in God’s holy Church is called to be one with the Apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ’s sovereignty as Lord of Lords and King of Kings. You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to assist in ordaining elders; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ. With your fellow presbyters you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world.Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, Apostles martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope.Your joy will be to follow Him who came, not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Are you persuaded that God has used this people to call you to the office of pastor? Answer: I am so persuaded. THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE THEN ADDRESSED TO THE PASTOR-ELECT BY OTHER BISHOPS.

Bishop: Answer:

Will you accept this call and fulfill this trust in obedience to Christ? I will obey Christ and will serve in His Name.

Bishop: Will you be faithful in prayer, and in the study of Holy Scripture, that you may have the mind of Christ? Answer: I will, for He is my help.

The Examination Bishop: Answer:

Will you boldly proclaim and interpret the Gospel of Christ, enlightening the minds and stirring up the consciences of your people? I will, in the power of the Spirit.

“I believe in One God.” Bishop: Answer:

As a chief priest and pastor, will you encourage and support all baptized people in their gifts and ministries, nourish them from the riches of God’s grace, pray for them without ceasing, and celebrate with them the sacraments of our redemption? I will, in the Name of Christ, the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls.

Bishop: Answer:

Will you guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church? I will.

Bishop: Answer:

Will you share with your fellow presbyters in the government of the whole Church; will you sustain your fellow presbyters and take counsel with them; will you guide and strengthen the deacons and all others who minister in the Church? I will, by the grace given me.

Bishop: Will you be merciful to all, show compassion to the poor and strangers, and defend those who have no helper? Answer: I will, for the sake of Christ Jesus our Lord. ALL STAND. THE PRESIDING BISHOP THEN SAYS: Bishop: Answer:

Will you be obedient to the Bishop who shall have oversight for you and your ministry? I will!

Bishop:

Then, My Beloved Sister, through these promises you have committed yourself to God, to serve His Church in the office of pastor. We therefore call upon you, chosen to be a guardian of the Church’s faith, to lead us in confessing that faith.

The Creed THE PASTOR-ELECT TURNS AND FACES THE CONGREGATION AND BEGINS THE CREED BY SAYING:

THEN ALL SAY TOGETHER;

We believe in One God, The Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, begotten from the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right Hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Imprimatur of Imposition The Imprimatur of Imposition ALL CONTINUE TO STAND, EXCEPT THE PASTOR-ELECT, WHO SHALL KNEEL BEFORE THE PRESIDING BISHOP. THE OTHER BISHOPS WILL ENCIRCLE HER. A PERIOD OF SILENT PRAYER FOLLOWS WHILE THE PEOPLE REMAIN STANDING.

THE PRESIDING BISHOP THEN BEGINS THIS PRAYER OF CONSECRATION.

“God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, dwelling on high but having regard for the lowly, knowing all things before they come to pass: We give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham, and have raised up prophets, kings, and priests, never leaving your temple untended. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen.”

AT THIS POINT, THE PRESIDING BISHOP AND ALL OTHER BISHOPS AND OVERSEERS LAY THEIR HANDS UPON THE HEAD OF THE PASTOR-ELECT, SAYING TOGETHER:

“Therefore, Father, make Tonya Marie Williams a Pastor in your Church. Pour out upon her your princely Spirit, whom you bestowed upon your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, with whom He endowed the Apostles, and by whom your Church is built up in every place, to the glory and unceasing praise of your Name.”

AS THE OTHER BISHOPS STAND BACK AT THEIR PLACES, THE PRESIDING BISHOP CONTINUES THE PRAYER, BY ANOINTING THE HEAD, THE EARS, THE GREAT FINGER, AND THE SOLES OF HER FEET. THE PEOPLE RESPOND IN A LOUD VOICE: “AMEN.”

The Investiture The Investiture *THE NEW PASTOR WILL STAND AS SHE IS ADORNED WITH THE GARMENTS OF HER ORDER.

The Cassock

The loose fitting, ankle reaching garment that may be worn by anyone serving at liturgical events. The cassock was formerly the universal everyday clothing of the clergy, and is the symbol of a servant. It reminds the wearer that he, in-spite of his elevation, is only but a servant.

The Surplice

The surplice is a large sleeved tunic of half-length, made of linen or cotton, without a cincture and is occasionally embroidered at hem and sleeves. It is a liturgical garment worn by all clergy, used in processions, and when administering the Sacrament. It is the symbol of the priesthood—the ephod of Samuel.

The Stole or Tippet

The stole originated from a kind of napkin called an orarium (cf. orarion). It is linked to the napkin used by Christ in washing the feet of his disciples, and is a fitting symbol of the yoke of Christ, a servant of salvation. It represents the bonds and fetters with which Jesus was bound during his Passion. It is symbolic of the preacher.

The Cross and Chord

The cross is representative of the pain and suffering a Christian must endure voluntarily in order to be joined with Christ. The cross is a revealed mystery taught by Christ when He said if anyone wants to be a follower of me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.Biblically, the cross symbolized the implement of your death not the implement of some light suffering or something your going through.
