ach year thousands of people gather to embark on the quest for the ultimate drum corps experience. The drum corps experience is not exclusive to our most precious members of the drum corps family, the kids. The drum corps experience comes in the form of a group of avid fans

coming together from all points to enjoy the camaraderie of those that share the same interest. It comes in the form of corps parents and support staffs planning the meals and travel for the next day of tour and the joy they feel when they see the kids perform. The experience is enjoyed by corps instructors and designers putting forth a great effort to create an environment for the performers to realize success in not only performance but in becoming better human beings. Corps alumni gather each year to remember “the good old days”. Of course, the moment the performers walk into a stadium filled with people the gleam in continued on page 27

MARS Music takes DCI live on the Internet for the DCI SUMMER MUSIC GAMES Championship Week.

n the early days of drum corps the 1’s and 0’s that mattered most to a drum corps performer were his bugle fingerings. Today however, the 1’s and 0’s are most likely bits of digital information from fans posting messages or reading information on an internet website related to the drum corps activity. One of the top resources for that information is DCI Online (www.dci.org). This summer that site and the site of DCI corporate partner MARS Music (www.marsmusic.com) will be the focus of the online drum corps world. MarsMusic.com will provide drum corps fans world wide with streamed video and audio feeds from this summer’s DCI World Championships. The feeds will be

available at both the DCI Online and the MarsMusic.com sites. The programming elements of the Championship Week cybercast are still being finalized, but will include live audio feeds from many of the Championship week events. Live or slightly delayed video will be available for several of the events including the World Championship Finals on Saturday night. Other planned online activities are realtime chat sessions with corps members, instructors and judges. DCI and MARS are also planning to offer a series of video features about drum corps for download during the week. Scores will also be posted online, as they are available. “We would like to provide more details about the technical specs of the project, but to be honest the technology is changing so fast that what we would use this week might well have evolved two or three times between now and August when we go live with DCI.” said Doug Phifer, MARS Music Manager, E-Education. Phifer, a former band director, pointed out that “while nothing can replace the in-your-face experience of a live DCI event, our goal is to design an online delivery system to provide maximum quality for the broadest base of users. We plan to use the best technology available at the time to provide online drum corps fans the opportunity to experience the Championship Week events like the folks in the stands in College Park.” MARS’ participation as a sponsor goes far beyond writing a check and walking away. In addition to the cybercast, MARS also provides production support for DCI clinics and the Marketplace stage at the Championship as well as promotional coverage in its Musicians Planet magazine. continued on page 5

FROM THE DIRECTOR My Dear Friends, We’re live again! Through a direct association with PBS the 2000 DCI SUMMER MUSIC GAMES World Championships will once again be offered to your local PBS stations live and in a pledge program format. This good news is made possible by the thousands of dollars raised for PBS stations during the two hours of our program thanks to the support of drum corps fans. PBS officials state that the DCI telecast is “a solid pledge program offering” but it is not a “blockbuster”. In order to secure long term enthusiasm from the PBS stations we will need to achieve “blockbuster” status this year. DCI will spend in excess of $250,000 to produce the program, which is supported mostly by proceeds from merchandise sales and in part by sponsors. I realize we ask you for ticket dollars, we ask you for merchandise dollars, we then ask you to support your local corps and this year we are asking for more in the form of fuel money to offset the surprise to member corps budgets with rising prices. THANK YOU! But, once again, I ask you to save up enough to pledge to your local PBS station the night of our live telecast. Make sure they know it is drum corps dollars that is supporting the station. If you’re coming to the stadium, bring your cell phone, we’ll supply you with numbers to call during the pledge breaks. On behalf of the member corps of DCI and DCI Division II & III, thank you for all that you do to help preserve and promote one of the world’s truly great youth activities. DCI is truly blessed to have so many people that care and act in the best interest of drum corps. I look forward to Celebrating the Experience with you this season. “As musicians, the MARS management and staff understands the hard work involved in performing in a competitive drum corps. We felt that this partnership was a great opportunity to showcase the drum corps activity to the world.” said Randy DeWitt, MARS Music Director of Education. “With its focus on “We plan to provide online drum corps fans the opportunity to experience the Championship Week events like the folks in the stands.”

becoming the premier gathering place for musicians, we believe that the MarsMusic.com website is an ideal place to do that.” A former music supervisor from South Florida, DeWitt knows the drum corps activity well. “As a member of the Imperial Guardsmen (Evansville, IN), I learned a lot about performing. The experience provided me with a broader background as I pursued my music degree and began my teaching career.” Online since mid April, marsmusic.com’s goal is to become the online gathering place for musicians of any experience level. One of the more interesting features of the website are its online music lessons. Students play into a microphone attached to their computer and get instant feedback over the internet whether they are playing the correct notes or rhythms. Other unique elements of the MarsMusic.com site will be its live cybercasts of concerts and special events from MARS Stores and partner theaters. DCI's own cybercast will be one of the site’s key online events this summer. With 35 stores in 18 states, MARS Music is one of the fastest growing music retailers in the country. There are 12 new stores planned for the coming year. A typical MARS superstore is 25,000 to

35,000 square feet and carries over 200,000 top name musical instruments. Each MARS superstore also provides a flexible performance space in their traditional retail area. In addition to its retail space, each MARS Music store also includes a fulltime Learning Center and educational staff. The Learning Centers are the core of MARS’ corporate philosophy of providing a personal music experience from cradle to grave. This belief is further realized through the company’s other divisions MARS Music Records, MARS Music Publishing, and the MARS Music Foundation. MARS’ recent partnership with SFX Entertainment to sponsor 15 live-music venues and to become the title sponsor of the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Florida provides another key component to the musical experience. According to Randy DeWitt, “We have an opportunity to start a preschooler in our new ‘Babies Make Music’ program and watch as they develop their performance skills through our traditional Learning Center programs. As they mature as musicians we then can provide them opportunities to publish and distribute their music or perform on the stage of a MARS Music Amphitheater or venue.” Who knows, he said, one day we might even have a drum corps in each MARS store.

MARS TO SELL DCI MERCHANDISE If you can’t wait until this August for live online drum corps, MARS stores will also begin selling current and recent DCI videos and CDs. “The first shipments should be reaching MARS stores in early May” said DCI Executive Director, Dan Acheson. “We’re excited,” he continued “about the fact that not only will existing drum corps fans have easy access to our materials, but that these products will also be seen by new audiences with an interest in music.” For the address of the nearest MARS Music store visit them online at www.marsmusic.com.

The acronym D&BC in the year 2000 can now stand for DRUM & BRASS CORPS as the activity has moved to the use of brass instruments in any key. Revolutionary? Perhaps, but no more so than the changes that had occurred during the previous century. Changes that constantly pursued greater musicality through the evolution of a novelty noisemaker into a legitimate musical instrument.

REVOLUTION

ompetitive drum and bugle corps started as an adult activity by the American Legion and the VFW for GI’s returning from WWI. They competed with the standard military bugle pitched in G and later added a horizontal valve pitched in D. The addition of the valve allowed units to voice truer melodic lines and increase harmonic voicing and chords. It also added to the appeal of the activity to the general public. One of the top corps of this era was the corps sponsored by American Legion Post 76 of Racine, WI, four-time American Legion National Champion in the 1920’s. This instrument persevered until the 1950’s, when the first wave of reform/change swept the activity. It should also be noted that instrumentation consisted of a soprano bugle and a baritone bugle pitched one octave lower than the soprano. Sometime around 1950, a few inventive corps persons in the East started experimenting with pulling the instruments rear slide to create a half tone drop in pitch. The Princemen Sr. Drum and Bugle Corps of Boston, MA, were, perhaps, the most notable for utilizing this technique. Their results were chromatically phenomenal, but a bit noisy at times with all the “clicking” that could be heard. From the success the units enjoyed, the American Legion Rules Congress legalized an optional rotary valve, attached to the rear tubing,

pitched in F a full step change, rather than the half step created by pulling the slide. This was done to maintain the bugles non-acceptance as a musical instrument and thus not having to worry about copyright law royalty fees, infringement on the true musical instrument world, and to keep this activity unique to the veterans organizations, who were the rule makers and sponsors of the National Championships. Virtually every drum corps equipped their instruments with this rotary valve. Of some interest, the Des Plaines Vanguard, Des Plaines, IL, (1972 DCI finalist) were still pulling slides on their French horn bugles as late as the 1970’s with remarkable results. From the middle 1950’s through the middle 1960’s we experienced the French horn bugle brought into the instrumentation scene, followed closely by the bass-baritone, euphonium, contrabass and mellophone bugles. All, though, had to be approved by the veterans’ organizations and all were tough “sells” by the movers and shakers of the activity. During this time there were allegations (never proved) that some units had developed, and were using, illegal rotary valves pitched in E (a step and one-half rotary to increase the horn’s lower chromatics) and in B-flat (simulated the first valve of the trumpet and provided truer tuning). The pursuit of greater

musicality and finer tuning was running rampant by well-respected musicians and instrument companies, and the ruling bodies relented to most of their suggested rule changes. The biggest change came about in 1969. The top musicians of the activity, headed by Ken Norman (Kilties, Racine, WI), developed a G bugle with the valve tuned in F and a rotary valve tuned in B-flat. In essence, they created an instrument that mirrored the trumpets first and second valve and made the bugle a legitimate instrument. It not only brought greater notation opportunities for the instrument, but it brought greater musicians into the activity—arrangers, instructors, performers. The activity had finally gained the recognition as a worthwhile musical activity, and the recognized precision of the past continued to rise. It was only natural, after 1972 and the forming of Drum Corps International, that the normal evolution of the instrument would eventually find the valves in an upright position and that a third valve be included to obtain the best possible tuning and musicality. Brass lines have never been better then what they’ve demonstrated the past 10-15 years. And now the next step and, perhaps, the final frontier instruments pitched in any key. While the words any key are included in the rule change, the intent was to allow corps the option to utilize instruments in normal production by instrument manufacturers the B-flat trumpet, B-flat front bell bass-baritone, and the B-flat marching tuba. The results of this change will be most interesting, because it will allow units to make complete instrument changes. The B-flat trumpet/bugle may not be easily compatible with the G bugle. Units may have to make complete instrument changes rather than yearly section changeovers. Although untested at this point, because of a smaller bore size, the B-flat instrument should have greater brilliance but may or may not have more difficulty in sound projection. Since several of the established front runners of the activity are going to utilize these instruments, while their close competitors are not, the fans of the

activity will witness first hand the initial results of this rule change. The ensemble sounds may be different but it remains to be seen if the differences will be audible to most ears. Musically, the activity has come a long way in its rather brief existence, but the history of the activity still has some very fine musical moments to reflect upon... despite the awkward instruments. If you’ve been a fan of the activity for a great number of years you’ll remember the 1950’s featured the mellow swing sounds of the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights (Newark, NJ), arranged and taught by Bill Hayes, and the great sound of the Hawthorne Caballeros (Hawthorne, NJ). The 1960’s were highlighted by the Kilties (Racine, WI), with a duo arranger/instructor team of Emil Pavlik and Ken Norman, the outstanding Royalaires (Chicago, IL) headed by arranger/instructor Truman Crawford and, of course, the Cavaliers (then of Chicago, IL) under the leadership of arranger/instructor Sal Ferrara. The 1970’s featured, perhaps, the finest horn line to ever grace this activity the Argonne Rebels (Great Bend, KS), taught by the highly accomplished

Sandra Opie. This decade also introduced us to the sounds of the California corps’, the Santa Clara Vanguard and the Concord Blue Devils. The sounds that were created by the late Gail Royer (Vanguard) and Wayne Downey (Blue Devils) became The Des Plaines Vanguard were still pulling slides on their French horn bugles as late as the 1970’s with remarkable results.

benchmarks for the activity and remain on the cutting edge of brass production to this day. The 1980’s welcomed back the Garfield Cadets, now known simply as the Cadets (Bergenfield, NJ), with a great sound produced by James Prime Jr. and Don VanDoren and who can ever forget the fantastic horn lines produced by arranger/instructor James Wren for the Phantom Regiment (Rockford/Loves Park, IL). The 1990’s saw many of the previously mentioned units still maintaining their hold on superior brass production along with a notable newcomer, the Star of Indiana (Bloomington, IN). The Star of Indiana, through marvelous resources, became the new “star” of the brass world and have since gone professional with a smash hit in London, England entitled “Blast”. There is one brass line that is noticeably missing from the above decade listings, as they belong in every one of them the Madison Scouts (Madison, WI). Since their inception in the 1940’s, this unit has always been one of the top horn lines and has justifiably received that honor at many National Championships. The new bugle/trumpet is welcomed into this new millennium. It will be wonderful for the activity. Because not only is this an activity of traditions it is also an activity of change. This is what has made it special and unforgettable in the hearts of the millions who have been touched by it. Dave Richards is a DCI Hall of Fame member and was a brass judge for many years. He was a member of the DCI Championship panel from 1972 until 1982 (except 1977) and he also judged for many other organizations.

E

D C I T O D A Y 24

ach year, our fans across North America catch a glimpse of drum corps from the other side of the Atlantic and the Pacific. Names such as Beatrix (Holland), Pride of Soka (Japan), and Yamato (Japan and the US) have all become familiar to us as we look forward each year to seeing how the art of drum corps translates to foreign lands. In 2000, another name is added to our lists of international corps not to miss: the Taipei Yuehfu Drum and Bugle Corps of Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. As fans will see this summer, Yuehfu will perform a traditional drum corps show on the field with Western music and costumes. However, Yuehfu is far from a traditional drum corps in that their illustrious reputation as a performance ensemble is built upon a number of professional engagements off the field as well. Funded mainly through monthly member dues, performance fees, government grants and private donations, Yuehfu began modestly as a community marching band in 1996. Yet the word “modest” does not apply when describing the group’s rapid climb to success. Just one year after their founding, Yuehfu became known across

their country; and another year later, they made claims to an international notoriety in the marching music activity. Director Gary Brattin explains, “Yuehfu, in Chinese history, was the name of the imperial Chinese government bureau in charge of compiling and maintaining collections of all Chinese musical literature of the time.” A very appropriate name for the group, Yuehfu can be considered musical ambassadors of Taiwan. In 1997, as a cultural gift from the state, the group was invited to the 45th anniversary of the crowning of Jordan’s King Hussein. According to Mr. Brattin, “although in the end the trip was not made, the invitation was an honor, and was ultimately the birth of [the] drum corps.” The following fall and winter, the corps took on a new challenge: television! As contestants on the Guan Juin T.V. Show, a popular variety show on Chinese television from Taiwan, Yuehfu vied for the coveted $10,000 prize for completing 20 shows undefeated. Their judged three-minute routines featuring the guard, the brass, and the drums won them national acclaim and 20 shows later, the $10,000

was theirs! The corps’ prime-time appearances led to even more TV spots for the next 3-4 months as well as other invitations. In fact, in 1998, Yuehfu was the official pep band and cheerleading squad for the Luckipar basketball team of the professional Chinese Basketball Association. Yuehfu, a drum a bugle corps that had already boasted a successful record and public acclaim, did not in fact test the grounds of a competitive marching arena until 1999 when they entered the World Association of Marching Show Bands Championships in Sydney, Australia (for more information, go to www.WAMSB.org). At this, their first opportunity to take the field in front of a panel of judges, Yuehfu was fifth overall and the highest scoring community band with a 91.5. Subsequent to this championship event, the Vice President of Taiwan,

Lien Chen, invited Yuehfu to once again take their place in front of the cameras in a special televised standstill performance. Then, in February of 2000, Yuehfu took to the stage again with a “Blast” or “Blue Devils-esque” production to welcome the “Year of the Dragon.” Combining pieces from their previous performances since 1996, an impressive collection of musical selections including the traditional local music, classical favorites, modern jazz standards, Latin rhythms and even Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ la Vida Loca”! This summer, Yuehfu has their sights set on their first ever US tour. Competing in Division II and boasting a 90-member corps with 48 brass, 21 percussion, 20 guard, and 1 drum major, the corps is will be performing “Russian Classics with an American Twist” featuring selections from Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Bernstein’s Slava!, and Stravinsky’s The Firebird. As with any marching organization, the recipe for their success will combine the talents of both members and staff to arrive at a winning combination. The members, all high school graduates and university students between the ages of 18 and 22, come mainly from the northern Taiwan area. Almost all have previous marching experience but none have yet to undertake a DCI tour. In addition to time, talent, dedication, and hard work,

each member pays dues of $25 per month and will also shell out over $1,600 for the two-week summer tour that will take the corps from Missouri to Tennessee, north to Ontario and

Quebec, and back down through New Hampshire to Pennsylvania, New York, and finally to the University of Maryland’s Byrd Stadium for the 2000 Summer Music Games World Championships. Along the way, fans will have a chance to see them perform at Division II/III shows such as the North American Open in Erie, Pennsylvania, as well as the DCI MidAmerica in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and the DCI East in Allentown, Pennsylvania. If you have had the privilege of seeing a corps caravan down the road to or from the next show you know what a great sight it is. The buses full of performers, the cook truck, the equipment truck and the staff vehicles make anyone who passes them look twice and for drum corps fans it is a great feeling knowing that such a great activity is in their area.

B

ut to get this caravan on the road takes a lot of work. Many corps this summer will travel well over 10,000 miles and consume over 20,000 gallons of fuel per vehicle! Current fuel prices will require corps to increase their 2000 fuel budgets by as much as $5,000 to over $12,000 for the entire summer. Fuel cost increases will seriously affect every drum and bugle corps, especially those on limited budgets. This summer, retail gasoline prices (regular grade) are expected to average $1.46 per gallon, 25 percent higher than last summer’s average of $1.17 per gallon (U.S. Department of Energy). This means a family that traveled 12,000 miles from April to September would likely pay $170 more for fuel this year than it did last vacation season (Baltimore Sun). For a drum corps fan who travels 1,000 miles to attend events throughout the summer, fuel

prices will add an additional $15 to the summer budget. Increasing fuel prices will present financial stress for everyone this upcoming summer season, but for drum corps participating in the 2000 SUMMER MUSIC GAMES, the fuel crisis is an issue that could seriously affect the future operations of several individual drum and bugle corps. To offset expected fuel prices, corps have four major alternatives to pursue:

their eye as they anticipate making that audience stand with an incredible performance is the most special. Each year the drum corps family embarks on the mobilization of a significant effort to ensure the experience is passed forward. The 2000 season will prove to be another great step forward for the activity. There are a good amount of quality local shows that are staged and supported by volunteer groups across the United States. There are major regionals that will prove to be defining moments in the lives of many in their quest for that ultimate performance. There are clinics for students and band directors that allow them access to what makes our activity great. And, there is the crowning moment of the many spectacular events at the world championship celebration. Regardless of how you are a touched by the experience, through being a spectator one time a year at a local show, attending a clinic, an alumni reunion, watching the program LIVE on your local PBS station, volunteering or marching, Drum Corps International invites you to come laugh, cry, live and celebrate the drum corps experience!

1. cut back their 2000 summer programs 2. increase tour fees 3. do nothing and hope they will be able to pay for the costs after the summer 4. ask drum corps supporters for additional financial help

To help offset increased fuel prices for individual drum corps competing throughout the 2000 season, DCI is establishing the 2000 Fuel Fund. All proceeds from the fund will be proportionately distributed to Division I touring corps in an attempt to offset both current and expected fuel prices. To make the 2000 Fuel Fund successful, we need your help. For more information or to contribute to the fund call: 1-800-495-SHOW or visit the DCI website: www.dci.org.

end; later in August, new members come on board to prepare for the corps’ fall season. An experienced panel of American and Taiwanese instructors promises to bring the most out of the corps’ challenging repertoire. Director Gary Brattin, along with a few other American “imports”, take charge of the brass and percussion captions; each has an impressive background in marching and music performance, including many with professional engagements in New York, the San Francisco Bay area, and Taiwan. The color guard caption head, Jaudz Liu, is from Taipei and is known for consistently producing high scoring guards in international competitive circuits. Her all male Chien Kuo High School guard tied for best guard at the World Association of Marching Show Bands “Calgary Stampede” in Calgary, Canada and the Yuehfu guard received a 19.7 out of 20 at Sydney Championships in 1999. With such a successful record and such enormous potential, it is natural that Yuehfu now undertake the enormous task of packing up the corps, traveling to our side of the globe, and jumping headfirst into DCI competition. A former community band, Taiwan’s unofficial ambassadors

of marching music, the game show winners, the professional basketball pep band, and now, a DCI Division II contender, Taipei Yuehfu Drum and Bugle Corps will prove in just two weeks time that despite being a relatively new organization, having

“Yuehfu, in Chinese histor y, was the name of the imperial Chinese gover nment bureau in charge of compiling and maintaining collections of all Chinesse musical literature of the time.” never competed under DCI rules and having never performed for DCI fans, they are determined to further their claim to excellence. For more information and a complete tour schedule, consult Yuehfu’s website at http://www.garybintpe.com/Yuehfu.
