Winner of the 2000 IFEA Pinnacle Award! From gyms across the country to the football field in Buffalo, New York, millions of drum corps fans and participants will celebrate amazing performances and their overwhelming power in the summer of 2001.

Each summer thousands of the world’s youth come together to create cutting edge performances in different ways. They see these performances as something that drives them to become the best and to grow as individuals. The performance becomes the center of memories about places they have gone, people who have touched and changed their lives, and accomplishments they never thought possible. At the same time millions of fans also come together to experience this sense of determination and accomplishment with the performers. They watch as they take them through a continued on page 3

range of emotion not found in too many other activities. They cheer and support these performers and add to their experience. Some also remember their time as performers or the first time they experienced this amazing activity of drum

corps. For others this is the first time for them to witness these outstanding feats and may be on their way to becoming one of those in the stands each summer. As seasoned fans of drum corps you may sit in the stands between performances and discuss the current year’s shows as well as those you have seen in the past. All give their opinion on what they thought was the best moment of the performance or what should have been done differently that would have enhanced the performance. But all

surrounds it; to the fans who may travel thousands of miles to be a part of the amazing event; each person associated with drum corps is part of this wondrous circle of energy. Sacrifice has always been, and will continue to be a part of drum corps, yet it is done every summer, and as each year passes it becomes increasingly special. Many talk about past performances, and when they do it most likely will start with “Remember when.” Those who were there may never forget the image of the Santa Clara Vanguard color guard member holding the Phantom’s mask as the corps disappeared. The sight of the first Z-pull. The sound that the first company front drilled into you. The “power wedge” and the way it would leave you wanting more. Or maybe it was that special ballad that brought tears to your eyes. These are the memories that make this activity so special. Not only for the sights and sounds of the performance but also because of the memories they will trigger about a special person, place or event. The performances have transcended cultural, economical, and social boundaries. They have stood the test of time. They have found their way to a special place in our hearts. They have

Each person associated with drum corps i s p a r t o f t h i s w o n d r o u s c i r c l e o f e n e r g y. will agree that the accomplishments of the performers is nothing short of extraordinary. There is an astonishing amount of human energy invested into making these moments happen. From the designers of the shows who begin the previous year developing the performance before you; to the directors and instructors who recruit the talented youth; to the parents who volunteer to sew, cook, drive and support the corps in every aspect; to the volunteers and promoters who are responsible for the show site and all that

left us wanting more. Next time you think about the drum corps activity or what is done or not done in its name, remember that it is about the performances and the incredible power they have over us. Now is the time to get your tickets to LIVE the experience, SHARE the experience, and CELEBRATE the experience. Come on out to the stadium to spend some time with some really great people engaged in the pursuit of the ULTIMATE performance. We’ll see you there!!

From the Executive Director Dan Acheson How did I get involved in drum corps? Let’s see, Norm and Lorraine Acheson, my mom and dad (celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 4/28/01 — congrats mom and dad) were super boosters for the Queen City Cadets from Cincinnati, OH because my oldest brother Paul was a snare drummer, my brother Norm was a part of an old art form known as rudimental bass drumming and my brother Tom was at the time a baritone player. I had little choice at the age of 10 as to my destiny. It really started with my Aunt Barbara whose daughters were in a winter guard. She told my mom about a drum corps in our area. My mom mentioned it to my brothers and Norm decided to check it out. By the end of Norm’s first visit to the corps he was a bass drummer. There has been a lot of Acheson family history in drum corps since and it continues. My Aunt Barbara’s grandson tried out for the Cavaliers this past Fall. He did not make it (he is still young) but pledged to try again next year. He got excited about drum corps through his participation in a Cincinnati area high school band. Oh yeah, he had no idea his older cousins were as involved in drum corps as we are until recently. Kind of a full circle don’t you think. continued on page 27

We considered arranging for George Hopkins and Jeff Fiedler, directors of the Cadets and Cavaliers respectively, to meet for a little mud wrestling, but... We found an alternative... For alas... Once in a while all of the stars align and indeed, we are able to provide to our fans and friends, an event that we think is something special; something no one has seen and perhaps no one will ever see again. WE are able to promote an event that is indeed a once in a lifetime experience. On Sunday evening June 17th, in Buffalo, NY. The Cadets and The Cavaliers will in one evening allow all of us in attendance to “remember the past” and “examine the future” as the two corps face-off at Dunn Tire Park Stadium, located in downtown Buffalo, just 20 miles from the site where perhaps, these same two corps (and a few others) will be vying for the World Championship come August 11th. The Outcome — The Crowning of the Fantasy World Champion! What will you see if you travel to Buffalo for this summer evening event? • Each Corps will perform their 2001 production not once — BUT TWICE!!!!!!. • One time — the fans will be the judge • One time — the adjudicators will select the winner The Fantasy Champion — the Winner of both, or the corps with the highest combined score. • The Cadets and The Cavaliers to perform no less than 3 selections with the corps combined. • Special non-competitive selections performed by each of the two corps. • Interviews with key staff and administration. • Special guest performances by two DCA champions: • The Syracuse Brigadiers • The Empire Statesmen Join with us as we settle the tie and open the 2001 season in grand style. We are sure to have some fun, we are sure to see some great early season performances, and — We make a promise... This Time — There will be No Ties!!

A Recently, DCI asked some of the international performers in DCI corps for their impressions of the drum corps activity here. There was also a desire to learn why the marchers uprooted themselves from the comfort of their home countries to march in America.

8

mong those who responded were; Noaka Abe (Japan) of Carolina Crown and Naoki Yamashita (Japan) of The Cadets, Michael Huber (Germany) of Glassmen, Steven Muzio (England) of The Cadets, and Erwin van der Meulen (The Netherlands) and Harrold de Raad (The Netherlands), members of Crossmen. One should never underestimate the power of DCI videos, and most likely, the new DVDs. Many of our international performers were exposed to DCI through videotapes. Noaka fell in love with Carolina Crown after watching one of these videotapes. Many of her friends had marched DCI corps and told her it was an amazing experience. Friends who marched Garfield Cadets (now The Cadets) showed Steven a video from 1983, when the corps won its first DCI World Championship. He was astounded at what could be done on the DCI level of competition. Michael has an uncle who marched in a German marching band, and who showed him some DCI videos. Erwin wanted to march in a drum corps since he was a little boy, inspired by being around his father, chairman for a local marching band in The Netherlands. He too saw a DCI finals video, and bought some of his own DCI CDs in 1994. From then on, he knew what he had to do.

Those who march in DCI corps are perhaps the strongest advocates for others from their country to do the same, such as the Pioneer alumnus who went back to The Netherlands and talked Harold into coming to America. Drum corps is different in North America, a fact that appeals to these marchers. Although they love the activity in their home countries, there is something about DCI corps that makes it worth leaving everything behind. In Harold’s case, he wanted something more than a social experience. Drum corps in The Netherlands reflects the culture, which is less competitive than in the United States. Michael wanted to do a summer-long tour, which is not how the activity operates in Germany. Naoko was impressed with the size of everything associated with DCI corps; the number of marching and staff members and the large crowds in particular. Naoki is impressed with the scale of everything in this country. Both her and Naoka are using their time here to learn English, a major side benefit that can pay dividends back in Japan. Naoko left Japan a month early this year just to study English over here before the season begins. Naoka could barely understand English before she came to America the first time to march, but she learned enough to survive marching. Harrold

seconds the feasibility of learning enough to get by, as he wasn’t fluent in English when he first came over. He says if one listens carefully, one will pick up the meaning of what is being said. But some things don’t need much translation. One day, an instructor came up to Naoka and simply said, “Good.” She has never forgotten the warm feeling she had from that experience. Michael also hopes to brush up on his English from being in a corps, but the language wasn’t a factor for Erwin, as most television shows in The Netherlands are in English, with subtitles. Steven was attracted to drum corps in America by the quality of corps and larger horn lines, about three times the size of a typical British corps. The quality difference is partially due to British

Skyline Drum and Bugle Corps in Frankfurt. Erwin marched as a drummer in Jubal, one of the top corps in The Netherlands. He sent a videotape of himself playing snare to several corps. Crossmen responded, and his life hasn’t been the same since he started marching snare in his new corps. He was grateful for the invitation, as he was already in love with the corps for the way in which it relates to the audience. Steven started marching when he was just seven years old, having performed with the Southern Knights Cadets and Black Knights, one of the top corps in England. After he ages out next year from playing soprano with The Cadets,

they [the corps] don’t feed you. But the truth is, I get fed better on tour [with The Cadets] than I do at home.” Others also mention that they find the food tasty and plentiful. Steven also has no complaints about prices of items over here, pointing out that the value is much stronger than back in Europe.

Naoka could barely understand English before she came to America the first time to march, but she learned enough to survive marching. corps having a weekend and occasional weekday rehearsal schedule. Wanting to be an instructor, he felt the experience he would gain from marching in a DCI corps would enhance his knowledge and make him a better teacher. Erwin says that in Holland, corps only practice and perform on weekends, so the performance levels aren’t the same as in America, which he claims is “drum corps heaven.” And “drum corps heaven” is where he wants to be. As for the scale of things over here, he points out that if he drove six hours in Belgium, he would pass through Germany and France and be on the Chunnel to England. In America, he would still be within the state of New York. One should remember that leaving one’s country to march in America is quite a sacrifice. Erwin puts it all in perspective, saying, “It is very hard to leave your country, family and friends. But it is a small price to pay to live your dream.” Most of the marchers from other countries have some drum corps experience. Michael, now with Glassmen, came from Germany’s

he plans on returning to help out the Black Knights’ horn line. There have been some tough adjustments. Steven found that sleeping on a bus was a bit of a shock to his system. But Harold notes that adjusting to life on tour wasn’t that difficult, pointing out, “When one has to sleep, one sleeps, whether it’s on a bus or in a gym.” One might expect that foreign members might have some difficulties adjusting to American corps food, as American kids are often heard complaining about it. You won’t hear Steven complaining, as he recounts, “You hear all these horror stories about how

The international performers all think that marching in the SUMMER MUSIC GAMES will be an experience to never forget. Michael expects to be “amazed” by the numbers of fans who come out to the big shows. Naoki thinks the experience will fulfill a long-time dream of hers. Steven says he’ll go home remembering the feeling he gets whenever the corps finishes its show and the crowd “goes mad.” He believes that the constant strive for perfection will help him and his corps to achieve that goal, and will open up other goals to achieve back home. Harold seconds that sentiment. “You WILL accomplish your goal if you work hard enough.” Hard work and sacrifice are just two things our international performers are willing to do to no end in order to live the life of their dreams. We are fortunate to have them adding to the diversity of DCI drum corps, and we wish them many fond memories as they carry the message of DCI back to their home countries. They are helping DCI reach out into the world and will help insure that drum corps will survive and thrive well into the future, and well beyond the borders of North America.

Five Championship Divisions DCI To Award The Gold, Silver and Bronze In Five Divisions In 2001

D

rum Corps International will award five champions at the 2001 World Championships. As in the past few championships, awards will be given to Division III, Division II, and the International Division. This year there will be a champion recognized at the Friday evening event now titled the Division I Championship and the event on Saturday evening will be for the World Class Championship. At the 2001 Annual DCI Board of Directors meeting it was determined that what is traditionally known as Semifinals will now be the Division I Finals and World Class Semifinals. The move was based largely on the purpose of recognizing corps traditionally placing 9th through 17th at Semifinals and to appropriately acknowledge the significant level of performance they

achieve. During the board discussions there was the initial fear that this may be perceived as a consolation division. Eventually, it was agreed that in fact this will enhance the performers recognition at a level of achievement worthy of its own distinction. The top 17 scoring corps will advance from Thursday’s Quarterfinals as in the past several championships. Corps scoring 9th through 17th will move to Friday’s competition as DCI Division I World Championships Finalists and will perform in reverse order of finish beginning at 4:45 pm. After the last Division I Finalist performance the nine finalists will participate in a full finale including the awarding of gold,

silver, bronze and finalist medallions, high caption awards and the en masse performance of “America/O’Canada”. There will not be a victory concert because the top 4 scoring corps in the Division I Finals will advance to the World Class Finals on Saturday evening. But something’s missing.

There are still empty seats!

M

uch has been written or discussed about DCI’s marketing effort in attracting new fans to the drum corps activity. Each summer newspaper, radio and television ads are produced, billboards erected and press releases sent out, but still there are empty seats! But how can that be, drum corps is extraordinary. Unfortunately television and print ads aren’t very effective at selling it to someone that’s never been there before. What we have discovered is that the most effective way to bring new fans through the gate is for them to experience it first hand. Think back to your first drum corps experience, could words have adequately described it before you got there? Probably not. Word of mouth and networking have unquestionably been one the single most effective marketing tools ever created. Most major revolutions in history were spread by word of mouth. Pick. You name it and one on one conversation probably played a major role in spreading the word. One to one marketing has emerged as the core of an entire industry with Network Marketing companies representing one of the fastest growing segments of the economy. Any real passion and word of mouth is the engine driving the following. How

passionate are you about the drum corps activity? Last summer almost 91,000 fans passed through the turnstiles at major DCI events. Imagine what would have happened if every one of them had brought a new person to those shows! When's the last time you really shared your love of drum corps with someone who knew nothing about it? Have you ever invited a neighbor, colleague or a total stranger to a show? If they resisted did you offer to buy their ticket. That $15-30 donation to the drum corps cause will be worth its weight in gold when they become a fan (and face it, they will be a fan after that first show). Who knows, they may even treat you to a show somewhere down the line to say thanks for introducing them to such an awesome activity. Welcoming home old friends What’s interesting about drum corps is how many people have been touched by it over the years. How many times have you had someone notice your corps t-shirt or cap in a mall or walking across a college campus? Or maybe you’ve noticed a corps bumper sticker, window decal or license plate while driving down the road and honked to say hi. There are drum corps fans everywhere. Look for them. Introduce yourself and if it’s been a

few years since they’ve been to a show invite them to check it out. As I personally travel the country, people have noticed my DCI lapel pin or

overheard that I am involved in drum corps and have been genuinely excited when they find another person that knows about drum corps. Perhaps they marched, perhaps they knew someone who marched or maybe they just saw it on TV and thought it was cool. It’s easy

were blown away by the videos and wanted to know more”. That summer he took four of that original group to the “exSIGHTment of SOUND” show in Houston. They were hooked! Word began to spread throughout the company that these “band” videos were really cool and more people asked to join in the luncheons to watch videos. As the group grew its members offered to pitch in to cover the cost of the catered lunch and other incidental expenses. People also began asking to borrow the tapes to see more. Wahrmund gladly obliged and often cued the tapes up to some personal favorite performances. “They watched them from beginning to end” he said. “When they returned them, they wanted to see more, so I’d loan them another tape or invite them to a show.” They were hooked!

Besides spreading the word about drum corps, Hank’s “video barbecues” have also had a direct impact on corps members from Texas. In recent years he’s began picking up inexpensive souvies from corps over the course of the summer. These items are raffled off and the benefits have provided scholarships for several Texas students that march in corps. In recent years they’ve helped offset tour fees for two members of The Cavaliers and a member of The Cadets. For this coming season they plan to assist a member of San Antonio based Revolution with tour fees.

Last summer almost 91,000 fans passed through the turnstiles at major DCI events. Imagine what would have happened if ever y one of them had brought a new person to those shows! to refer them to www.dci.org or pass along information about a local show. It doesn’t cost any money and is a great way to connect with them and perhaps renew their interest in drum corps by inviting them to a local show. Hank Wahrmund — Superfan! To get a better idea of what we’re talking about here, let me introduce Houston, Texas fan Hank Wahrmund. Although he had never marched in a corps he had been a huge fan since his college days. “I loved drum corps so much, that I thought to myself, what can I do to help keep it alive and get the word out about how great it is?” With that thought in mind, Wahrmund invited a dozen coworkers to join him to watch drum corps videos over lunch. None had any idea what he was talking about, but figured a free meal is a free meal. According to Wahrmund “They

Eight years later the barbecue attracts close to 150 coworkers/drum corps fans. In recent years as many as 40 at a time have joined Hank at drum corps shows in Houston and throughout Texas.

So what are you waiting for? Grab the picnic basket, load up the cooler, fire up the grill, order an extra ticket or two to your favorite drum corps show and get out there and spread the word!

I mention this not to give my family a plug, although they deserve one for all the support they have given me over the years, but to make a point. A family member told a mom who told a child who convinced three siblings it was a cool thing this drum corps activity. And the other story comes from a present day youth who had a great experience with his high school band and wants to experience drum corps. Word of mouth, the most powerful most effective marketing tool within the activity’s grasp. I now ask you, how did you get involved in drum corps? What pushed your button? Did a friend drag you to a rehearsal? Did a friend drag you to a stadium? How many people have you dragged to rehearsal or to the stadium during your years of involvement? We have a very special activity to share with the world. Is each one of us doing ALL that we can to spread the word of its magnificence? Keep dragging people along and keep telling those stories. I thank you for being outstanding messengers and I look forward to sharing more amazing drum corps experiences with you this season.
