Letter from the Executive Director Throughout my travels since September 11th, I have had several conversations with people involved in the drum corps activity from corps members to corps board chairpersons. At least once in each conversation, if not actually dominating the discussion, were the expressions of how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to be a part of the drum corps experience. Then there is typically an acknowledgement of the intense challenges that face our endeavor, followed by a sincere sense of gratitude for all the people involved that make this the special experience it is for our corps members. As we gather together in stadiums this season to share in the joy of the
significant achievement through performance by exceptional youth, let us celebrate the spirit of drum corps that has been a part of our culture for three generations. Let us thank the person next to us in the stands for being a great fan, give a kind wave to the good people supporting corps behind the stands on our way to the stadium, and cheer for each and every performer, not just for what their performance means to you, but for what it means to them. Let us enjoy spirited competition; however, with the focus on the magnificence that is being displayed by all, not just the end result. The sharing, teaching, and unconditional support shown by thousands each year is the very essence of “living and being the experience.”
I am truly grateful to serve in the position I do as I am surrounded by some of the best people on the planet. I thank you for all that you do to make the world a better place through the drum corps experience. As we go about the celebration of Drum Corps International’s 30th Anniversary, enjoy the sharing of a story of the past, being caught up in the moment of one of today’s performances, and looking to the promise of a great future because of the people around you. The upcoming season appears to already have special meaning to many. I hope you can all find away to be a part of the passion for performance. Happy 30th DCI!

The Cadets and Blue Devils may have tied for 2nd place with an overall score of 97.60 at the 2001 DCI World Championships; however, The Cadets percussion section and Blue Devils color guard skipped over 2nd place to seize the title in their captions. Caption Awards are determined by averaging caption scores from the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals competitions. The Cadets Drum Line earned High Percussion and the Blue Devils Color Guard earned High Auxiliary Awards at Championships in 2001.
Blue Devils Color Guard
"There's a fire that burns within the Blue Devils Color Guard. I know this fire because it dances through me and radiates from the arms of my friends as they move through space. I like to call this fire passion or sometimes shear desire. This is what drives me, and I think it is safe to say that it drives the Blue Devils Color Guard. What drives this passion and desire is unique to everyone. However, it is certain that we are all driven by our fans and audience, our love for this activity and our focus to be the best at what we do. "Working towards being the best is not an easy task. This next year will be my fifth year with the Blue Devils, and I still feel like I'm on my toes. This is the toughest competition!

"On top of it all, we have a phenomenal staff. With Scott Chandler doing our choreography, Jay Murphy writing our drill, T.J. Doucette and Dave Meikle as technicians, we cannot help but be perfectly set up for awesome performances. Part of my love for the Blue Devils comes from the fact that our staff is priceless and we are treated professionally.
"Winning is a bonus when you are a part of a great color guard. The most magical part of the 2001 Blue Devils Color Guard was the spirit we each had. I was amazed how we were able to roll out of bed, aching and sore, and the next minute be dancing and jumping up and down. If you saw our energy through our performance, you can imagine the energy we circulated on a daily basis. Instead of spiraling down when we were tired, we would fight through exhaustion with laughter and cheers, clapping and pats on the back. On behalf of the Blue Devil Color Guard, I would like to express our thanks to DCI and all of our supporters for giving us the opportunity to share our energy. We perform for you. See you this summer!!!"
"Each year is a process. Winning high color guard is a process. I've won and lost with the Blue Devil's Color Guard. And my experience has showed me that every last detail matters in a champion color guard. Eating correctly, sleeping, being respectful of others, pushing through the smallest details in choreography and conducting ones self in a professional, mature manner are just a few of the key elements that bind the greater picture. The reality of our color guard is that no one is perfect. It's not rare to find people practicing on their breaks or asking for help on parts they are having trouble with. — Jessica Allen; Blue Devils Color Guard 1998-2002; Color Guard Captain 01, 02

share with us the pride, focus and determination, that is essential in becoming one of the best.
The Cadets Drum Line “Winning the high percussion award was like nothing I have ever experienced before. I’ve been in The Cadets for the past three seasons and, without a doubt, winning high drums has been the most rewarding experience for me. I think our work ethic and determination put us over the top in 2001. “A lot of people were comparing us to The Cadets 2000 drum line saying that we weren't going to be as good as them or whatever, but I think that is unfair. I was a member of both drum lines and I can tell you that we worked much harder in 2001. Every year is different. The talent level of the 2000 line was tremendous and we were consistent all year. In , we worked extremely hard to get

where we were at the end of the season. I can remember working parts of the show over and over again for endless hours. “Another big component of our success as a line was the chemistry of the group. I have never been involved in an organization with such a great chemistry. We all got along and worked exceptionally well as a team. To me, in an activity like drum corps, it is important for a group to remain focused on the task on hand yet still be able to cut loose and have some fun. We knew when to 'turn it on' and push ourselves to the limit. Great drum lines are the ones that are consistent all year and practice the smartest. “Last season, 2001, was a great year for the entire organization, not just the drum line. The corps made its first appearance in California in over 50 years. That was also an experience I will not soon forget. Quite an adventure! We had a show full of a wide variety of music that presented a great challenge for us, too. As George Hopkins told us all year, the show was all about performance. If we perform well, we would get the results. The show wasn't going to win it for us. In the end, we were right where we wanted to be. We were right in the thick of the hunt. Last summer was a great payoff. I think that I learned a great deal about teamwork and commitment last summer. The staff did a terrific job in writing us a great drum book and we did an exceptional job in pushing ourselves during rehearsal. I’ve learned not to make preseason assumptions! After last summer I have figured out that any goal is attainable with hard work.” — Chris Vale, The Cadets Drum Line 1999-2002; Snare Drum Section Leader

Blue Devils Color Guard “My first season with the Blue Devils Color Guard was in 1997. It couldn't have been a more fulfilling experience. I won my first Drum Corps International title as well as my first High Auxiliary title all within my rookie year. I like to think that I was spoiled. In 2001, I aged out of the Blue Devils taking two DCI Championships and four High Auxiliary titles with me. It has been five years of my life that I will treasure forever.
"During the summer I work harder than I do any other time of the year. We spend countless hours every day with the expertise of incredible staff members like Scott Chandler, T.J. Doucette and Dave Meikel, working towards excellence. At times it's monotonous, emotionally draining, physically draining and even painful. You deal with sunburns, tendinitis, sore muscles and fatigue for three months straight. “Just as we work hard, we love to play just as much. Some days seem unbearable, but the staff always knows how to revive us with a little popsicle break. As much as our staff loves to work, they like to play as much as we do, and at times almost seem younger than us.
my ears had heard all season. Everything that you have worked for the last three months has been culminated into one glorious moment, and at the same time
it is such an emotional release that all you can do is stand there and cry. “My experiences with the Blue Devils Color Guard has been life altering. Without it, I would never appreciate the true meaning of hard work. You learn to push yourself beyond your limits, even when you don't think that you can go any further. It is a constant learning process. Even now after aging out, I am continuing to learn as I continue in teaching. Above all, I value the friendships that I have made along the way. The people that I love and hold closest to my heart are those that I have met in the past five years as a member of the Blue Devils Color Guard. These are the memories that I have made, and the lessons that I have learned. Both of which I will take with me for the rest of my life.”
— Jennifer Byers; Blue Devils Color Guard 1997-2001 “We fought all summer for the High Auxiliary title against The Cavaliers. At times we won and at times we lost. At Finals, hearing 'High Auxiliary' goes to the Blue Devils' were the “While reflecting on the ingredients required in forming a championship drum line, it is sweetest clear that all top corps in DCI are populated with talented members. words “The factors that make The Cadets stand out among others are, in my opinion, our unending hard work, desire, heart, stamina, focus, discipline and intestinal fortitude. The winning mixture of talented, dedicated and intense musicians is embellished and showcased by our challenging musical arrangements and knowledgeable instructors. Indeed the instructors' physical and mental commitment is as significant as any of the percussion ensemble members.
The Cadets Drum Line
“The individuals who join The Cadets come from all over the world. They come with one major common goal — to be the best they can be. Each Cadet strives for perfection and seeks that level of performance that few ever achieve.
We come to learn that perfection is something we will never attain, and yet, we work towards the unreachable day after day. It is an interesting paradox, one we learn over time to understand, respect and embrace. “By the time we reach the field for performance, the sacrifice, the pain, the frustration and the exhaustion disappear. Members are filled with immense pride, emotion, excitement, and are ecstatic over the crowd's reaction and appreciation for their hard work. The chance to perform is what makes the drum corps experience so very, very exciting. “When you're part of an organization that requires an individual to stretch beyond his normal limits, a natural bond forms between its members. The bonds formed through this intense activity are similar to the friendships forged throughout the human existence in other challenging efforts such as military service and world-class sports. We are a team. “Aside from the friendships gained, the enjoyment in the drum corps activity stems largely from the sense of accomplishment, the achievement of goals, and the ability to work as a team far and above any normal level of participation and per formance. Throughout my three years as a Cadet, it has been my pleasure and privilege to come in contact with some of the most driven, success-orientated, positive young people in this country. I am confident that the life lessons learned by each of us will serve as a significant factor in supporting the development of magnificent human beings.” — Robert Marino; The Cadets Bass Drum Line 2000-2002

The camaraderie and pride is definitely still there - there's a strong love for the activity amongst alumni and current members. When winter camp starts, a group of strangers begin to form the corps; as the season progresses, those strangers grow together to become a corps family. Everyone who has ever marched DCI can relate to this phenomenal transformation. We asked DCI vets from 1972 and 2002 DCI first year members to share their thoughts. Although Drum Corps International has gone through many changes through the years, members from yesterday and today have much in common - more than anyone could imagine.
What does a 1972 Vet and a 2002 Rookie have in common? Not wool uniforms! Certainly not cell phones on the road. Tall pikes? Nope!
From the First... “I remember many things from that year!! Especially wearing brand new uniforms taken from our measurements for the first time at DCI. After the performance we were backstage marking time (for eternity) in a circle getting ready for the routine after-the-performance ‘gripe session’. We were finally put at parade rest and I looked over to Mike Masters, a Contra player who had been in the Squires (B Corps) from the first day he was eligible. This guy had paid his dues in drum corps for a lot of years. As he set the Contra down, a stream of blood flowed from the bell onto the pavement and formed a small pool. His face and the front of his brand new uniform were absolutely caked with blood. When asked what happened, he said he knew he split his lip in the middle of the performance but just kept on playing. ‘I’ve waited my whole life for this moment, you don’t think I’m gonna stop playing cuz of a little blood do you?’” Bob Feller, 1972 Anaheim Kingsmen “I marched for De La Salle from Toronto, Canada, and remember seeing Boston Crusaders and how amazing they were with 24 members; they sounded bigger than Madison Scouts. When the cymbal player came out to play a soprano solo people were blown away.” Harri Maki, 1972 De La Salle
“My first ‘Nationals’... beautiful weather, beautiful stadium, one great performance after another. I always enjoyed marching drum corps, but that night I fell in love with it.” Donald C. Kosmal, 1972 Skokie (Norwood Park) Imperials “The 1972 championship marked the sixth consecutive national championship that I participated in. That year we had the opportunity to win it all, but didn't. It was a life experience in the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. Nonetheless the aura and excitement of Whitewater 1972 remains to this day in regard to our second place finish. The Anaheim Kingsmen were first, we were second, and Santa Clara was third.”
“What I remember the most, we were on the hill, the sidewalk area behind the stadium where the corps entered from the Thomas Leith, parking lot. We were waiting to go down on the field when the Anaheim Kingsmen’s busses pulled into the parting lot. The bus were swaying side to side as the corps was just getting it on kids yelling, screaming to put themselves into a mental zone… As I remember they were late in arriving to the stadium and were to go on before us… When as they passed us to go to the field you could see in there faces all were in a zone. I have never seen a color guard as crisp as they were. The short warm up they had was awesome and the way they entered the field. What a show they put on that night to win. Wow, that has been with me for almost 30 years and I never will forget.” Barry Walters, 1972 Argonne Rebels
1972 Blue Stars “It was my second year in Drum Corps, and Whitewater was the biggest event I was ever in. Looking back Drum Corps and DCI was the best thing I was ever involved in.” Mike Knight, 1972 Cavaliers
23
“I have always dreamed of being in the Santa Clara Vanguard. Having watched them for several years, I have always admired the strong sense of respect, dedication, class and tradition that each corps member embodies. I am honored to be marching with SCV this year. I really can not put into words how truly grateful I feel to be a part of the organization for the first time. And I can’t even imagine how awesome it will be when I’m standing in front of cheering fans at our first show... wearing the green and red uniform that I’ve longed to wear for so long.” Alison Waterkotte, First Year Member, Santa Clara Vanguard “I feel really honored to even be a part of the Santa Clara Vanguard, much less in their 35th year. I can't think of any other place I’d rather be than at practice, and when I'm not there, all I can do is count the days until the next camp. SCV will always be a part of who I am and where I’m from.”
“I can’t wait to go on tour and perform our show. I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can from the staff and being around everyone in the organization. It’s been a great experience so far.”
Jeremy Milinazzo, First Year Member, Santa Clara Vanguard
...to the Future
Cory Miller, First Year Member, Boston Crusaders
“This summer I want to create new friendships and make the friendships that I have now stronger. I would like to challenge myself to do my personal best on the practice field and the show field. To control my tour spread (just kidding). To do my part because we are all a team and with one person not doing their best then the corps is not as strong. Most importantly I am looking forward in seeing the Corps bond and become a family.” Erin Wolff, First Year Member, Colts
“I am really looking forward to growing with the corps. I can’t wait to feel the sense of togetherness that I know we will feel on the field at finals when all of the hard work finally pays of. It WILL be awesome.”
“I can’t wait for this summer to begin. I know that everydays are going to be rough and there will be times that I will question why I wanted to do this so badly but I know that the hard work will pay off in the end. It’s like a dream come true for me. I have already met so many wonderful people, people that I can already tell will be friends that I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life. Our show this year has me very excited! It looks to be a great season and I intend to take advantage of every second of it.” Brigitte Vola, First Year Member, Boston Crusaders
Ryan O’Leary, First Year Member, Boston Crusaders
“I still can’t believe I’m actually a part of something so cool. The people have to be the best aspect of it all — they seem to make it so special. I can’t wait to be able to perform with an organization that is so great — I’ve already learned so much, it's crazy. I can’t even imagine how much better I’ll be by the end of the summer! And I certainly can’t wait to play in front of thousands of screaming people! It's going to be so much FUN!” Andrea Venet, First Year Member, Santa Clara Vanguard
“Since watching the DCI show at BOA two years ago, I knew that drum corps was something in which I had to get involved. I can hardly wait to play and march with people who are as dedicated to the activity as I am. Most of all, I look forward to entertaining the many spectators who come only to watch the Corps.” Bill Albrecht, First Year Member, Colts

DCI History + DCI Hi-tech
= WOW! It’s easy to kick around a term like “most exciting thing ever,” but when it comes to Drum Corps International merchandise, this term definitely suits the latest project.
of Music in Motion. The collection consists of 26 volumes of DVDs, and spans from 1974 - 1999 featuring World Championship Finals per formances from each year.
Perhaps you’ve been around drum corps for several years and have seen some of DCI’s most memorable corps in person. You'll remember the advent of curvilinear drill in the mid-1970s. Certainly you recollect Bridgemen's blindfolded drum line. Chances are you've witnessed the evolution of “flex drill” in the mid-1980s, and the movement to costumed spectaculars in the late 1980s. No one could forget the wall of sound Spirit produced per forming Georgia, or the transition from pure color guard movement to dance and theatrics over the past 20 years.
The project starts in 1974 as that was the first year the DCI World Championships were professionally video recorded, although not all finalist corps were recorded that year. The collection ends with the 1999 DCI World Championships, as 2000 and 2001 are currently available on DVD. That’s 26 years of magnificent DCI per formances! You may buy an individual year or the entire set. A sizeable discount will be available for those purchasing multiple years or the entire set.
This year, Drum Corps International is reaching back into the video archives to create The Legacy Collection: Master ful Per formances
All volumes of The Legacy Collection have been remastered and produced by Tom Blair, current producer of the Drum Corps International PBS Broadcast and the 2000 and 2001 DCI Championships DVDs. As a
bonus, each volume features a short introduction by DCI broadcast legend Steve Rondinaro and drum corps authority Michael Cesario, discussing highlights from around the world and on the field for each year. Also included will be the feature segments shown in each of the respective years and a copy of the finals recap from that year. In celebration of Drum Corps International's 30th Anniversary, The Legacy Collection: Master ful Per formances of Music in Motion will be on the shelves July 1, 2002. Reserve your copy beginning June 1! You’ll want some or all of it for your personal collection. It is without a doubt “the most exciting thing ever” to hit the DCI merchandise mix. Check out the ad on back of this magazine! Happy viewing!
