Welcome to the next generation of DCI Online! In 1997 Drum Corps International partnered with IBM Interactive Media to develop a drum corps web site on the
cutting edge of technology. Over the next few years DCI Online provided drum corps fans worldwide access to the latest DCI and corps merchandise, web casts to those unable to attend events live and the latest news throughout the year. Alas over time, rapidly changing technology and the internet swept past the DCI web site. While it was functional it was beginning to show its age. To improve the site and bring it up to date many key improvements were made. Among these is a smoother navigation
merchandise, like Championship and historical audio and video recordings, DCI Online also offers the latest in DCI clothing and general merchandise, as well as specialty products from some of your favorite corps. And finally you have easier online access to tickets to all of the major DCI events. The web site experience continues to provide corps information, images and audio clips along with information to assist young drum corps fans interested in participation in a drum corps. Whatever your reason for visiting the new web site, DCI hopes you will enjoy the experience and that you will make this a routine stop in your daily surfing. Throughout the 2001 season DCI Online will be your single source for live web casts of several key DCI events, official scores and schedules, interactive fan polls and the latest updates on the world of drum corps. As DCI takes careful steps to bring pageantry and excellence to the stage in stadiums around the world live, we now too are committed to creating and maintaining a web site that captures the very essence of who we are, what we do and who we serve. If you want to be at
DCI Online will be your single source for the latest updates on the world of drum corps. interface. DCI Online visitors will find it much simpler to move from one area to another through shorter links and more one-click navigation. And with the addition of a search engine visitors will be able to find just what they are looking for. The most significant improvement however is in online shopping. Drum corps fans will have a much friendlier shopping experience at our secure e-commerce site. In addition to your favorite DCI
the heart of the drum corps action, join us online at www.dci.org!
Greetings! It has been a busy “off season” for DCI. We have launched a new web site that will provide an enhanced experience for fans and participants. The web site offers much improved functionality as well as significant flexibility for many more enhancements in the future. Stay tuned for more, or should I say stay connected. If you have not seen or heard the new DCI 2000 Championship DVD, it is a must for every fan in marching music. I’m sure it was incredible when drum corps was heard on LP’s for the first time. I remember the VHS being an innovative new product that offered the latest in the sights and sounds of drum corps and then the compact disc. The DVD is over the edge and will make you an avid drum corps fan over and over again. The new Quest for Gold three-championship format has caused there to be a significant amount of increased interest from fans. These events by themselves are certain to make the drum corps season more interesting than usual. But, before the marquee events at the end of the season, we have the Blue Devils and The Cavaliers in the Southeast and East in June and The Cadets in California in early July along with the new Showdown in Buffalo on June 17th, a first time ever, one on one event featuring The Cadets and The Cavaliers. This true tie-breaker event adds to what already is going to be an amazing season. There is more, the Boston Crusaders and Troopers will join the Midwest Corps at the Bands of America/DCI event in Illinois in June. I just came from another site visit in Buffalo on the day the USA Today voted the 2001 DCI Championships city the number one “city with heart”. I can attest to this distinction as the good folks with the Buffalo Bills and other associations continue to open doors graciously to allow us to have a fabulous championships experience. We have a good deal of work to do in order to do our part in making this another great season for all. We’ll keep moving forward, in the meantime log on to www.dci.org and plan your 2001 drum corps experience. Thank you for being great fans and great participants. We’ll see you on the field or in the stands.

T Just outside of Washington, DC, that chant is still reverberating through the rafters of University of Maryland’s Byrd Stadium. After three ties for first place in five years of the DCI SUMMER MUSIC GAMES, fans had expressed quite clearly that they wanted one corps to be declared champion.
6
owards this end, the DCI Board of Directors recently passed a tiebreaker resolution. This new policy will be used in an attempt to declare a single winner at any DCI show in which more than one corps earns the same highest score. Borrowing a concept from figure skating judging, ties will be broken by the use of ordinals. Will it work? Only time (and identical scores) will tell. But here is how it’s supposed to play out. An ordinal is a number corresponding to the ranking given each corps by a particular judge. The highest score given by a judge during each contest would receive an ordinal of 1. The fourth highest score from that same judge would receive an ordinal of 4, and so on. In a field of twelve corps, the lowest caption score given out by a particular judge would receive an ordinal of 12. The ordinals for each corps are added up from all eight judges. If a corps places first from every judge, they would receive an ordinal total of 8, the lowest possible. A corps placing second from every judge would receive an ordinal of 16, and so on. In this case, the ordinals wouldn’t matter in declaring a champion, because the total scores would not be identical. But, for example, if two corps tie scorewise, (meaning that no corps swept all captions), and one corps has an ordinal
total of 10 and the other an ordinal total of 11, then the corps with the lowest ordinal total will be declared the champion. It is possible, however, for the highest scoring corps to tie score-wise and also tie by ordinals. If this were to happen, the corps that won the most number of captions would be declared the winner. However, there remains a very small chance that the top two corps could tie score-wise, earn the same number of ordinals and also win the same number of captions. It is an extremely remote possibility, but it can happen. And if it does, then we would once again have two co-champions. Although this system does not entirely erase the statistical possibility of two cochampions being declared, it does lower the chances considerably. Why did the Board vote for this particular tiebreaker? For one thing, the champion will be declared based on a single performance. Plus, the winning corps will be awarded the honor based solely on the scores given by the judges. Each and every caption is equally important in the ordinal tiebreaker process, regardless of the number of maximum points possible in each caption. By the way, the ordinal system would have broken each of the ties at the 1996, 1999 and 2000 DCI World Finals.
Fans Decide Order of Appearance Now here’s an exciting piece of information that all fans will be able to sink their teeth into. For DCI’s Masters of the SUMMER MUSIC GAMES in Murfreesboro, TN, you will determine the order of appearance. That’s right. You and all the other fans will have the opportunity to vote on who YOU would like to see perform first and last. You will determine the order of competition by voting on DCI’s website. In the weeks prior to the event, you will be allowed to log on and express your opinion as to your ideal order of appearance. The fans will speak, DCI will listen, and the corps will obey your wishes. Power to the people! A series of criteria was decided at the February 2001 Board of Director’s meeting for draw of order of appearance
I corps. These corps and start times will be announce this spring. The draw for the DCI Midwestern Championships will be based on how that corps placed at the 2001 Southwestern Championships. This draw will happen immediately following the announcement of scores in San Antonio on the 50 yard line, for all to see. Also, just after the scores are
legalization of amplification and electronics failed to pass. The first rule to pass is a departure from decades of DCI rules. Starting this season, Division I corps may march up to 135 members, an increase of seven members over the previously established number of 128. Corps may now enhance their shows without impacting their fiscal budget or creating additional logistical concerns. (For example, three modern coach buses will accommodate 135 members.) Several years ago, pit percussion numbers grew substantially, meaning that some corps’ drills actually shrunk a bit. Although this was not expressed as a concern when the rule was proposed, the passage will allow the numbers of

announced at the Midwestern Championships, the draw for the DCI Eastern Classic will take place, in full view of the audience. The DCI World Championships Quarterfinals will continue in reverse order of finish from previous DCI regional events; based on averaging each corps’ scores from the DCI Southwestern Championships, the DCI Midwestern Championships, and the DCI Eastern Classic. Three New Rules Passed Prior to the passage of three new rules at the Board of Directors meeting, two proposed rules concerning the
marchers in drills to grow to more closely reflect those often seen during the days before the pit came into being. It should be noted that corps are free to use these additional members any way they wish. The other two rules were passed to clarify language on existing rules regarding starting times and field boundaries. One final piece of news: Jeff Fiedler was elected as the new DCI Chairman of the Board. Jeff has been director of The Cavaliers since 1991 and brings a great deal of leadership experience to this role. DCI would like to express its gratitude to David Gibbs for his service as DCI Board Chairman for the past three years. Summer will be here before you know it. Come on out this season to see the best year of drum corps yet! And don’t forget that your vote matters!

“I think drum corps is the best you could do for young people!” Many have felt that sentiment in North America, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, England, The Netherlands and a growing number of countries around the world, but now, it’s being proclaimed in some places one might not expect.

S
weden has joined this growing list of countries helping to make the drum corps activity truly international. With a short history there is a corps there taking the lead in adding Sweden as another country involved in the world’s greatest youth activity. In 1996, Lars Östlund founded the first drum corps competition in Sweden, but it wasn’t until after the competition that someone exposed him to DCI drum corps by giving him a video of the 1992 SUMMER MUSIC GAMES World Championships. He remembers, “When I saw the video, I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was awesome!” Two years later, in 1998, Lars met one of the people featured on that video, former Cavaliers percussion arranger and instructor Jim Campbell. Jim was in Sweden to conduct percussion clinics, and his contact person was a friend of Lars. Inspired by what he learned from Jim about drum corps in America, he brought his own corps, the Strängnäs Drum and Bugle Corps, to Orlando in
1998 to witness first-hand the SUMMER MUSIC GAMES. The corps was there to merely observe the North American version of drum corps, they knew as the leader in this music genre. But this observation status was soon to change. This past year, Lars offered himself as a volunteer for The Cavaliers, using the experience as a chance to learn how to conduct practices and tours. He observed all aspects of a touring corps from how to feed this group of performers to how to get them to the next city for another performance. Something he had not done in Sweden. After the three weeks he spent with the corps, he had learned more than even he thought possible. This year Lars will bring his corps to the United States again. Not as observers but as participants. The Strängnäs Drum and Bugle Corps will be competing in DCI for the first time ever. They will also be the first Swedish corps in a DCI competition, making them forever a part of the growing history of DCI.
The first corps in Sweden was founded in 1972, but it didn’t resemble what one thinks of as a contemporary
drum corps. These corps were truly “drum corps” in that they had only percussion and no brass. Currently, Göteborg Drum Corps and Gislaved Drum and Drill Corps both feature marching battery and mallet percussion, but no brass. Another corps, Falköping Drum Corps, has trumpets, but no pit. Percussion includes traditional snare drums, one bass drum, and two cymbals, comparable to a Swedish military corps. The Swedish Army Corps is comprised of brass, flutes, oldfashioned snare drums, one bass drum, and two cymbals. Despite the traditional instrumentation, it was founded as recently as 1993. Only Strängnäs and Helsingborgs Drum Corps are similar to what North Americans would recognize as a contemporary drum and bugle corps; with bell front brass, field percussion, and a pit. Strängnäs is the bigger of the two units, with members from 12 to 22 years in age; including 16 brass players, 6 snares, 3 quads, 5 bass drums, and 6 pit percussionists. Some of the corps play marches, while others play pop tunes and themes from movies. For 2001, Strängnäs is featuring a collection of pop and Latin tunes and chorales that have a Swedish flavor. Lars founded Strängnäs in 1990 as a corps similar to the yet-to-be-founded Army Corps, as he had marched in the Swedish Army Band, a marching ensemble. At the time, he thought
drum corps in America would be just like the Swedish groups. But when he learned otherwise by viewing the DCI video, he was inspired to convert the corps to an instrumentation similar to that used by the American corps movement. Currently, the corps have no guard, as there is no tradition of color guard in Sweden. Lars sees that as the biggest problem to overcome, complicated by the fact there is no tradition of marching bands in the schools. There are, however, a few woodwind bands that convert to marching bands a couple times a year. But the lack of tradition in the marching activities makes recruitment difficult. For now, there is only one drum corps competition and one marching band competition in the entire country, so naturally, there
Members of Swedish corps tend to be from the same city, so each corps contains the name of their home city in their name. Strängnäs is not just the name of Lars’ corps, but also that of the city that it calls home. Lars says the corps in Sweden are dedicated to advancing towards a level of competition excellence that uses American corps proficiency as the standard. His goal is to create one very good corps that will serve as model for new corps in Sweden, in order to inspire the movement to move forward.
They will be the first Swedish corps in a DCI competition, making them forever a part of the growing histor y of DCI. is no touring. However, corps have attended competitions in England and The Netherlands. Judging panels in Sweden range from three to five judges, depending on the year, with some judging music and the others judging visual.
To help the members of his own corps comprehend what lies ahead for them, Strängnäs is visiting the United States this coming summer. Lars wants the corps members to model their vision for the future of Swedish drum corps on what they will see during this visit. With only four years of competitive history, the Swedish drum corps movement is just beginning to develop and flourish. But with people such as Lars Östlund dedicated to see it grow and prosper, one can be assured that the “I” in DCI continues to live up to its promise of serving and inspiring youth around the world into the 21st Century and beyond.
